Introducing our Dramabeans commenting policy

We’ve seen some questions floating around regarding commenting etiquette, so we thought we’d take this opportunity to put up an official Dramabeans Commenting Policy to clear things up.

We generally have an awesome commenter base here, with lots more respectful and well-spoken readers than bad apples. So first off, thank you for making this a fun place to hang out and talk dramas. At Dramabeans we always encourage robust discussion, open-minded debate, and a healthy dose of fanlove. And we just want to continue to foster the welcoming atmosphere here.

That said, with so many people commenting it can get a little unruly at times, and that’s where our policy comes in. If we can liken our comment threads to the best living room party ever, then we reserve the right to cut off that belligerent drunk guy who drinks all the tequila and is trying to make snow angels in potato chip crumbs. ‘Cause c’mon, that’s just gross. And also, we’re the ones who have to live in that living room once that guy leaves.

That’s why we’ve drawn up our guidelines here: Dramabeans Commenting Policy. Thanks, and happy commenting!

This is another reason (of so many) why I love your site so much. I love to learn about K-entertainment (including Drama and Pop) and love to hear comments, too. And to have so base rules just to remind us that even though we only virtually exist, being honest but still respectful always comes first.

Thank you, thank you and thank you very much.
Your admirers.

Oh, the caps rule isn't meant for having to have proper caps in everything. It's meant mostly to avoid this:

SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT WRITING IN ALL CAPS WILL MAKE OTHERS TAKE NOTICE AND READ THEIR POSTS, BUT MOSTLY WHAT IT DOES IS MAKE EVERYONE FEEL LIKE THEY'RE BEING SHOUTED AT FOR NO GOOD REASON.

Because that's just unpleasant. Not capping the starts of your sentences or your 'i's isn't something we care about. We're talking about giant blocks of texts with nary a punctuation mark to be seen.

Basically, help people along: keep it readable.

The punctuation thing?
.....

like when people forget that sentences actually have an period at the end the other day i saw someone doing that at soompi it was so annoying cause you cant tell where one sentence ends and another begins if you add in textspeak too it becomes virtually incomprehensible u no what i mean right i c it a lot and it drives me nuts i dont ----

Yeah I give up. I kept having to go back and remove punctuation because it's a hard-wired habit :D. And I can't think of any text speak beyond U no and LOL... LOL. I just never used it...comes of being older than IM and texting, I suppose.... ha ha. I actually had an honest-to-goodness PEN PAL as a kid. Still have that stack of letters somewhere...

LOL at the punishments. :D

So spoilers do count as "Report this comment" material...

But is it ok to mark paragraphs with

or something equally attention-grabbing?

Sometimes we need to mention a possibly spoilery bit in a comment when discussing things. Specially in the OT.

Or does the spoiler rule apply to (i.e.) an ep13 spoiler inside the ep12 recap only?

Thank you for laying out the rules and trying to keep things sane down here. :D

"This means anything that has happened in a series beyond the recap in which you are posting."

as i understand this, its at least ok to discuss anything that has happened so far in recaps, so ep 1-12 spoilers in ep 12 recap = ok, ep 13 spoiler = not ok.

but i wonder about the marking as well, its still easy to see it be accident even if marked as long as there is no way to properly hide spoilers.

"as i understand this, its at least ok to discuss anything that has happened so far in recaps, so ep 1-12 spoilers in ep 12 recap = ok, ep 13 spoiler = not ok."

I have the same understanding too. I tend to skip the preview, if there's any, at the end of an episode, and would prefer not be spoilt when reading the comments within said recap.

It'd be nice if the recaps could be spoiler-(marked or unmarked) free.

Please feel free to report spoiler posts in particular. The sooner we see them, the sooner we can delete them before more disappointed readers get spoiled.

Ack! My sympathies to the one in-charge of deleting marked spoilers. You can't help but read them then. :(

I wonder more about the OT, because sometimes we end up discussing things that have aired previously during the week and may or may not have been recapped (and sometimes may not be recapped at all), but some people still request 'no spoilers' because they haven't watched something yet.

I think no spoilers, including marked ones, beyond the specific episode, would be preferable for any recaps, but maybe on the OT we could have marked spoilers?

But I'll obey whatever JB / GF prefer.

OTs are an interesting beast, because there's the understanding that the drama discussion isn't confined by episode count. And likely the show isn't being recapped so you wanna talk somewhere, and OT is a good place for that. Spoiler tags are probably a good idea, as well as general courtesy toward your fellow drama watchers.

You can also code spoilers so other people won't know until they watch the whole thing. But this takes some thought to do.

For example, on the already passed, I Can Hear Your Voice, you can refer to the creepy dresser scene and say that was awesomeness and most people who watched that scene will know exactly what you're referring to.

Someone who hasn't will go WHAT THE-- What's the creepy dresser scene? How can the dresser be creepy?

=P The cabinet scene in Skip Beat is still one of my favorites. No one will know why until you watch it.

0

I've seen on sports forums, the tag [R] for spoilers on threads.

The problem with OT threads is that an [R] is non-specific as to the series.

It may well be best to merely assume that readers will be at their own risk to stroll through OT threads.

That said, considerate posters might well post [SPOILERS FOR ____ SERIES] in their post title.

Just a thought.

Thanks for laying down the rules, JB! (and also for the pig-rabbit pic, which sidetracked me for at least five minutes of remembered squee).

I second Mary's question above - is it ok to discuss spoilers, if they're marked? What about previews, or info about plot developments etc that is given out ahead of time but is not from an aired episode? (Gu Family Book had a lot of info released by MBC about plot developments ahead of time, and people discussed those before the episode in which they actually took place).

Required fields are marked *

I'd also like clarification about this. I know a lot of people feel that previews that air right after an episode are fair game for discussion in that episode's post, however the policy implies that previews should not be discussed. To be extra clear: are marked spoilers about previews allowed in a recap post? What about in the OT? I happen to be a major spoilerphobe who never watches previews and I've been spoiled many times in recap posts, so I'm very grateful for an explicit policy. I'm also grateful that most beanies are very respectful about not including spoilers in their comments.

Has the scene happened in the drama yet? If not, then it's a spoiler.

Spoilers in a recap post will invoke the voodoo rule and get you and your toe-warts hexed. Previews, interview tidbits, all of that counts. If you news makes somebody clap their hands over their ears going lalalala I can't hear you, it's a spoiler.

And also, sorry to bother but what about when a spoiler is right in the concept of the show?

Like in the upcoming Hong Sisters drama, there's info on the heroine seeing ghosts and the male protag's physical effect on that - and the drama hasn't even begun airing yet. If the first episode turns out not to have the stuff about that, does it still count as a spoiler ? It wouldn't make anyone cover their ears, but it's kind of a grey area.

i.e the difference between a spoiler and speculation?

Perhaps we should really carefully tag what is speculation...speculation tags? I sometimes don't even like to read speculation, so I actually would like that tag a lot - as a kind of twin (or distant cousin?) to the spoiler tag!

Javabeans, would that work?

(PS also triple-enjoyed this post because of the picture! Ha!)

0

speculation tags - good idea. I sort of figured that whatever I said was opinion or speculation ... but better to make it clear if you are making wild guesses (I think the butler did it!)

0

Introducing spoiler tags!

Literally. Try writing something between <spoiler> </spoiler>, and it'll require highlighting to read.

Warning: I am not positive the mobile view of comments will honor that html.

Can we comment on the commenting policy, or is that too meta? In any case, thanks for clarifying your commenting policies. I'm sure they will contribute to the conversation. I think that the "Thanks!" as placeholders to a later comment is covered under the "Firsts" rule. Since they added "We all know why you’re doing it. It’s cutting the queue, and no one likes a queue-cutter."

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree. I totally think everyone should thank whoever's written the post, but if you're going to write "Thanks" and THEN comment again...that doesn't seem quite fair. I understand some people just don't have more to write then a thank you, but it's the double posters that frustrate me.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, but I think there is room for "Thank you for the post / podcast / recap" as a comment, no?

Of course, the potential for mis-use is obvious and so I have to agree that the "Firsts" rule should cover the "Thanks" posts.

In a more perfect world, I would exempt the "thank you for the recap" comment from the "Firsts" rule.

JB, GF, et al do an extraordinary amount of work to produce the content and all of the background work to make this a home for thousands of k-drama lovers. A simple "thank you" comment seems to be not out of the realm of polite discourse.

Perhaps the reader has not the eloquence or the English language ability to speak his or her mind, but still wants to push forth a heart-felt feeling of gratitude. Would not a pithy thank you be allowable? Just sayin.

0

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree on the 'Thanks' its super annoying and another way of saying 'first'. If first is not allowed then lets do away with Thanks. I used to find the competitive spirit around 'First' quite funny, but 'thanks' seems to just be a cunning way of saying 'first'...

I didn't realize this was a queue-cutting technique?

Then again, I see how it can be seen as that.

I always saw it as, "Hey, a new recap. Thank you for the recap, and I am off to read it now!"

The comment is a thank you and an exclamation for impact of a new recap / post / podcast, which is a comment in and of itself.

That said, if push came to shove, I can see the potential for abuse and for it to be used as a place-marker for later comments or to be near the top of the comment chain.

That said, I think JB / GF are right. Comments that come in twenty minutes later are probably read with the same attention as comments that come five minutes after the recap release.

Haha! Can I be honest for a minute and admit that the "first" and "thanks" totally fooled me for a long time and I just recently figured out what people were doing? The "firsts" have been around since before the comments were threaded. I remember during BOF there would be at least 20 people claiming "first" and I would just shake my head and think "dummies." So I just aimed that some of those dummies were still around.

With the "thanks" I honestly gave people credit for being polite. I thought it was I little superfluous to do it every time but a nice gesture nonetheless. It wasn't until IHYV came along and I've had a lot to say about a drama for the first time in a long time that I realized I was taking my time to write well thought out comments, only to have them buried under a mountain of monosyllabic filler

I could be considered one of those "bad apple" people who caused the debate on the "Thanks" comment and apologize to anyone whose actual thoughts of the drama were buried beneath the piles and piles of "Thanks is good!" -- "No, bad!!!"
I got ragged on by so many commenters when I said that person was cutting the line. Now JB and GF have added rules! Insert victory dance

0

Required fields are marked *

I had a similar experience with IHYV. This website is the first place I have ever commented online, having never felt inspired to be a part of any other discussions elsewhere. But after over a year of reading this site and the great comments, I finally decided to dive in. Especially with IHYV, I feel eager to participate.

That being said, I just kind of watched what others did and thought it was the "norm." I too thought at first that we just had a very polite and appreciative crowd with lots of "Thanks" given. That being the case, I even did it myself once...after writing a few paragraphs about my excitement. I find it impossible to write concisely, ask my college professors :)

So apologies for any mistakes and thank you to the site moderators and commenters who helped me learn along the way!

I just see comments days after the first posting as having less chance of being read, but not beyond the realm of possibility.

I've even commented on Recaps for dramas that are years old if I just watched the drama and feel like I am going to pop if I don't discuss it ... maybe it is OK if every comment you write doesn't get read. It still feels like participating.

All the rules seem reasonable enough.
A clear language to be understood, no spoilers because almost everyone hates that, being polite even when disagreeing. Basically communicating without ayone getting hurt (physically -cf the eyes and the brain when bad spelling and mentally!) with a big friendly button to react when misbehaving happens.

All that with a funny yet getting-to-the-point tone that proves once more that dramabeans is a friendly place to come and read. And comment.

So why would that be arrogant? Isn't that what English speaking people call "etiquette"?!

I really like the rules. I will admit that I was at fault for being quite rude during one of my post a while back. I had such strong negative emotions towards the show A Gentlemen's Dignity, that during one post I got pretty nasty in the vocab area... I think whore was thrown around.. a lot. I apologize about that. A couple hours after I posted I realized how silly I was and was actually embarrassed over having my name on a post like that. After that I quit posting on that show. Ever since that incident I would like to believe that I have been pretty polite and open to discussion on other shows. Big was one of my favorite comment sections.
Anyway, I am sorry that I was one of the people that have a mental meltdown and went postal. I will continue to try and keep my post appropriate.

I've seen some comments on different threads every so often questioning what sort of comments are and are not allowed here, so having this list of rules is great! Clears things up once and for all. The rule about "firsts" reminds me of another thing I see happening in the comments that I've never really understood: piggybacking one's own (often lengthy) comments on someone else's, even if it is unrelated, just to be near the top of the page. I guess it doesn't really hurt anyone per se, but I've always found it a bit disrespectful, another form of queue-cutting. Just an observation.

I agree that if one is not allowed to ride one's own 'first' comment, then people shouldn't be allowed to ride other people's 'first' or 'second' or 'third' comment, with sth completely unrelated.

Agreed with this one.

If your comments had nothing to do with the comment you 'riding' on, then comment on a new number and not commenting on the first, second or third comments just because you wanted yours to be read. This is because it totally disrupt the orders of the discussion of the 'Original commenter' and those who commented below hers/his.

I usually don't remember the names of posters but there's this one beanie who does this and every time she piggybacks on someone else's post just so she could be at the top, I've learned to ignore her posts altogether but I still get annoyed that 1) no one tells him/her to stop doing that, 2) someone actually replies to her very long piggybacked posts, and 3) the poster knows it's rude and includes an apology in her post but continues to do so. I think I ranted at my twitter once because I couldn't contain my annoyance and posting on the thread to comment on that particular poster would've gotten me lots of negative comments with lots of "don't be rude at fellow beaner" and "freedom of speech" thrown at me.

I don't really mind the 'Thank you' comments that much unless the same commenter wrote a lengthy discussion underneath his/her 'thank you' comment. I mean why would you said 'thank you' and then write another comment underneath it in order to discuss the episode unless it meant for the person to 'reserve' the place? He/she can just said 'thank you' together with his/her discussion. ^^

Agreed. If you're thanking for the recap and that's all you want to say, then expressing gratitude is fine. Placeholders are annoying.

I think the 'thank you' comments that people are pointing to are precisely the ones that Hafy says... the 'thank you and I'm off to read' and then another comment much later finally participating in the discussion.

I have never minded those so much, I find them easy to overlook and often noticed that the majority of people who made such comments would actively participate in the discussion and show their genuine interest. Plus, I do think that people sometimes just want to express their appreciation, even express it right away. Not enough people say thank you in the real world, so I wouldn't upset at those that do and do it genuinely.

I don't think you should feel bad – there was no established rule about this previously, so you probably saw other people doing it and thought that this is normal or even expected or sometimes even to provide encouragement (sometimes when we have posts where there is little reaction because people don't know too much about the subject matter but still want to show their appreciation – e.g. reviews of very hard-to-come by films).

i'm personally okay with simple "thank you" comments made with the pure motive of really truly thanking the authors... even if the very first comment just so happens to be one of those "thank you"s.

Unfortunately, other people will then "reply" to that early thanks comment, just to get their thoughts near the top of the comments. Then, somebody who thought out what they wanted to say, then posted several comments in, gets pushed from say, comment #7 to essentially comment #57.

I feel the same way! I've made a few "thank you" comments in the past myself. I will be much more conscientious of this in the future. I'm relatively new to the Korean drama world and sometimes the only response I can think of is a simple thanks. I'm learning more every day, from both the posters and the commentators, and I'm very grateful for it.

This is as civilized a site for discussing Korean drama as it gets.
There are a few stars who have some extremely aggressive fans, who will go after people who speak ill of Their Precious, or criticize the dramas that the latter appear in, such that no discussion is possible. I honestly fear and loathe such fans in equal parts. I hope these new policies will take care of their acts of internet harassment and verbal violence in here, and we can speak freely again. TQ, I mean, Thank you.

BTW, if BTW is OK, is TQ bad form?

yes, aggressive fans annoy me too. not too long ago, i made an ambivalent comment about the casting of an actress who is quite popular here on dramabeans, and received a rather passive aggressive comment about whether i'd watched that actress' entire filmography (does that include television?), or simply only her most popular works, and a "good luck" for getting that actress changed out.

i just snorted and moved on, but seriously.

@saranga - was the actress Park Shin-hye? I remember having a go at someone who said that she was as untalented and limited, skills-wise, as any idol, and telling that person to please watch anything she'd done after 2007. I don't think it was you, but if it was, I apologise - I don't remember the tone of my original comment.

from the context you gave, it couldn't have been my comment as i'd made no mention of idols, and i never would never have called PSH untalented. i think i'd said something to the effect of that i was meh about the female cast of that show, while trying to be respectful at the same time.

it's a downside of the internet, where there are no cues like tone or facial expression that could mitigate the baldness of plain and simple words. we can substitute with smiley faces or emoticons, but for people who don't know how to, or want to, even the most well-meaning messages can easily be misconstrued and misunderstood.

so again, please don't worry pogo! :)

I think the Regulars here behave sensibly. It's the occasional visitor who brings their bad habits that are the status quo on other sites. They show up to police the thread that concerns their idols. Anyone who speaks up to tell them off gets my admiration.

It is only the Sharp-tongued ppl who lash out at Innocent comments, insulting their writers that I find deplorable.

"..who will go after people who speak ill of Their Precious.."

I think that is one of my biggest pet peeves on other sites, and why I comment on those sites so seldom. It is especially common on the Drama Fever site, but it is far from the only one. I try to discuss a drama or episode on it's actual merits, but I have seen comments on some sites based purely on how "hot" the actors were or were not - and you better not disagree, or you will start a flame war.

Yes, and also people saying they hate a particular episode or drama when it's not out yet! O.o;; I can understand if you feel nervous, but to say you hate it and the acting in it when it's not out yet, ummm..... it's not out yet. If it's not even scripted, and it doesn't have a plot, how can one hate it?

It's like saying right now, I hate the ending and acting of I Can Hear Your Voice. Uhhh... Yeah, not published, not written, so how do you know?

But I don't think this is particularly against the rules in either case. Just think the logic through... people are allowed to disagree. Someone may think one way, one person may think another. Agree to disagree, but keep it intelligent and respectful.

"Agree to disagree, but keep it intelligent and respectful" is actually harder than it sounder, bcos it takes self-restrain, the ability to differentiate between thoughts and emotions, and a healthy dose of respect for others. All of these things, relatively young persons (some teenagers) may not have learnt.

There is also the harder "Step away from your keyboard and do something."

Go Outside Watch another drama! You have better things to do. =P

But I don't think all teens are like that either. =P Agreeing to disagree? I never was a huge fangirl and I kept most of my crushes private and secret, even from my friends, who often pressed me to find a boyfriend and "What's your type?"

I've seen some more mature teens than adults too... so I'll chalk it up to the individual rather than to their age group.

the "no firsts" rule was long overdue! i never fully understood why people did it—simply thought they wanted to be first. after awhile, i just sort of guessed for myself why it was done. i guess on here, it works as a placeholder too.

hopefully the people who do this will understand that it encompasses "thank you"s or "thank you for the recap!" comments that i've frequently seen, and other variations that weren't really written so much with the motive of thanking the author as to use as a placeholder?

that said, at the same time, i've never seen anything wrong with simple comments like "thank you for the recap!" that are genuinely appreciative. because that's really all a poster might want to say for that particular recap.

it just gets a bit suspicious (and obvious, seeing how the comments are time stamped) if a recap post goes up and barely a minute later a "thank you" goes up as the first comment. one minute is nowhere near enough time to read and chuckle over your recaps!

A word to queue-cutting folk:
for me it doesn't really matter if your comment is on the top of the page or not. I normally go by commentators' names, since many of them are frequenters here and I'd like to know what they think, no matter on what page they post.
I also read short comments, since they are short and easy to swallow.
I check if anyone replied to my posts, which is normally somewhere in the end, because I'm a bit late. So, see you guys on the late pages, OK?

Hallelujah!

I've been a follower of this site for a long time (6 years! well... it's a long time for me :P). I remember I used to spend just as much time reading everyone's comments to an episode as reading the recap itself. I loved seeing what everyone else noticed, and discovering new things about the episode that I hadn't realized on my own!

I've found, though, that I've been more and more disappointed with the comments. People being unnecessarily rude to others, people piggy-backing their comments, people vying for attention... I found myself being upset rather than having fun. Eventually, I've just stopped reading comments.

I'm hopeful that these rules will improve our comments section! I know that people here are intelligent and fully capable of having polite conversations, whether they be healthy debates or squee-fests of our favorite stars.

Thank you for setting up the Commenting Policy! I'm looking forward to reading comments again!

As the site increases in popularity over time, the tide brings in all kinds.
It only takes a few bad eggs, who think that having a sharp tongue is the same thing as having a sharp wit, who think that it is their right and responsibility to attack anyone who doesn't love the Apple of their eye as much as they do, who can't tell sense from nonsense, to spoil the generally congenial atmosphere here.

Required fields are marked *

I admit, I am guilty of unleashing the sharper side of my tongue (keyboard?) on some of these blind fangirls who can't take the fact that their idol is criticised ( but I still think that if you're 'sick and tired' of hearing how bad your bias is at acting, then you have no right to shut up even a single person of the many, many people saying it.)

0

Required fields are marked *

blind fangirls sometimes need a little bit of a reality-check anyways so i don't really mind the comments that are honest, true, and blunt for that reason.
I'm fine with the fangirls that admit to their oppa's weaknesses and still admire them, as long as their biases don't blind them from the truth.

0

Required fields are marked *

So true. I refrain from commenting myself since I do not want to ignite another unnecessary "virtual fights" with those fangirls. I don't mind really, it's their rights to go obsessive over their favorite people. However, when they start to bring their "rights-to-like-other-people" to bash the comments which comment on their "people"'s weakness, the rights have gone over the line. I'm behind you, I applaud people who recognize their favorite people's weakness instead of blindly bashing other people's comments.

"save the drama for the actual dramas themselves"

^That's probably a good life motto to live by... Especially if you watch a lot of kdramas. It's nice to have some clarity about commenting rules! Altough most of them speak for themselves (like the trolling) it's good to know about the spoilers and the 'first' posts.

I don't think there's anything wrong with 'Thank you for the recap!' posts as long as they're truly expressing their gratefulness, and not just a placeholder. I'm usually not bothered by them though, because I don't see commenting as a 'race' where you have to win first place, and I often don't mind where my own comment ends up. But I guess it does come off as a little rude if you look at it as 'queue-cutting'. And I guess it is a little annoying to see your post get lost behind lots of one-line posts, only to be even left further behind when people start discussions under their own posts later.

I have seen many sites with the thumbs up/down, but a lot of them (like on the one that we run for our company which is totally non related to dramas) - have them turned off or disabled. What usually happens, especially if there is a "down" button is that the rabid idol worshippers will pile onto any post that criticizes their Precious, regardless of the merits of the post itself. In another non related blog that I keep up on, one commenter called them "thumbs down stalkers".

the only rule i don't agree with is the one about using capitalization. i use punctuation but tend to not capitalize when i'm commenting online. this is the internet and it's an informal forum, and i like that. plus, it's sort of an ode to a poet i like--bell hooks who eschews capitalization. and as a journalism major, it gives me a break from remembering the thousands of rules of ap style and all that other jazz that i usually have to remember when writing.

I think that's not so much a rule but a helpful guideline to make it more likely for your comment to get read. It won't be deleted if you don't use proper punctuation/capitalization. And I think they mean both in conjunction. No capitalization by itself is not a problem but combined with no punctuation, it makes for quite a hard read. I tend to pass up comments like that.

I admit, I'm also guilty of writing in all lowercases(except for when I'm typing on my phone). I write in all caps when I'm writing by hand all day at work(drafting), so it's a nice break for me to revert to all lowercases. Plus, I just find it more visually pleasing. However, I do punctuate, although I'm not sure how correct they always are. So I hope it's not too much of an eye sore for everyone. ?

It all depends on why you are posting in the first place I think.

A few years ago I was doing some research on some articles I was writing for our company site, and came across a few interesting factoids - with reference to caps and the "ur" syndrome.

In one study, reading speed and reading comprehension both went down without the proper use of caps. The reason given was those caps are "cues" for the brain as to where to start and stop a train of thought.

And at the risk of being moderated out, as a journalism student that is something you should know about...

I like this new commenting policy. I'm also one of those who has refrained from commenting much recently due to the "messy" comments section. Sometimes it feels like a warzone and it's always sad to read such mean comments.

And LOL to this thank you comments. I never thought of those as placeholders - and *gasp* - I've done it quite a few times as well....especially for the posts which are less well-received/commented. I felt bad because I know it's no easy job recapping and just wanted to:

1. Express my gratititude for the recapper's trouble
2. Just want to acknowledge the drama's quality even though I didn't have anything constructive to comment about.

But I did felt the "First" comments were annoying. So for that I'm glad those are getting flushed out.

Thanks for introducing the comment
Maybe it's just me, but I haven't seen any hateful comments on any post, so I'm not quite aware of what other beanies are talking about when they mention the bad apples.
I only started commenting and reading comments a few weeks back even though I've been here for almost two years because I'm normally very late to comment and I thought that there would be no use commenting since nobody's going to read into the next page. So when you stated that you do read everyone's comments later, I felt much better! At least someone will read my comments haha.
Also about the language rule I recently wrote a few words in Korean because I didn't know the exact English translation so sorry guys if you didn't understand some Korean words! I will try to keep my comments all in English, if possile although I know there are alot of Korean readers here.
The spelling/grammar rule is really getting on me, I now think I have to have apostrophe's (wait, is there an apostrophe in that??!) Whereas I normally can't be bothered with them.

"you may not agree with or respect a person’s actions or words, but you should always be considerate of the person."

Great point, respect of others. This is something I have thought about a lot myself over the last few months about comment posts. It's bothered me. I think we have all been guilty of getting swept up in our excitements and passions at one point or another and a comment like yours really brings into focus a really important aspect of life. Thank you for saying that.

The thing about this particular website and it's main focus of Korean drama, actors, and actresses is that personal taste is just that, a person's personal preference. We all have vastly ranging life experiences (or lack there of) that inform our thoughts and preferences. Taste in actors, actresses, and entertainment is totally subjective. Enjoyment of beauty or entertainment is distinctly in the eye of the beholder. Disparate tastes, likes, dislikes, and opinion between people do not mean that any person is wrong, it just means that there is a difference. I think that some people get so wrapped up in their passions that they do not recognize this. We need to respect each other, be considerate as you said. Also, it is human nature to want someone to see ones point of view. Some people do not realize that arguing against someone's personal taste in actors, actresses, or dramas is fruitless, people will like what they like. If I say I like a drama or an actor, and someone feels the need to outline in detail how I am completely wrong, I may think that is rather peremptory an approach, but I would defend to the death their right to an opinion. I just think it is more respectful to allow a person their right to their opinion and express ones own opinion in ones own comment. This is regarding personal taste in people or shows, not regarding discussion on drama episodes or plots, themes etc. Those of course should be open for spirited discussion.

This is just my personal opinion though ;)

Bravo, Mar!

It's like favorite flavors of ice cream. If your are passionate about strawberry, it's easy to fall into the trap of trying to convince people strawberry is the best, but some folks are just vanilla or chocolate fans (and some want all three flavors together!)

Nice analogy! I think most of us can agree on chocolate...abs.

I'm going to be good and make my perv mind leave the all 3 together thought alone. ;)

Exactly, very good analogy. I for myself always use the analogy of yellow roses. For me, my opinion is like yellow roses and another person's opinion is red rose. Am I going to be mad, curse, insult, give names to a person who prefer red roses over yellow roses? No of course not, so I try to use this analogy whenever I feel like somebody should think like me lol and it does work every time. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it's not because somebody have another opinion than ours that this person is our ennemy or is stupid, etc. Howerver, difference of opinion have to be expressed with respect even if sometimes it may be hard...

So true, and on most websites, there will always be people who enjoy naysaying. My husband runs a Cadillac forum, and he often gets comments like "Cadillac sucks!" which he immediately deletes.

But even in spirited discussions the rule of respect is necessary, isn't it? I mean, not only when it's a question of personal taste.

@Kumi, true that! That last bit, I was differentiating different kinds of content in comments, personal preferences versus topics of discussion. Such as in when someone expresses their personal preferences/like/love of an actor/actress or a drama we should respect their right to have, enjoy, and express that choice without feeling like they are going to get comment bombed for their preferences. But in regards to comments introducing opinion/topics on drama content, episodes, plot, themes, etc., responding with a dissenting opinion/different take just is part of the discussion process. I hope that made sense because the sentences seemed really long haha.

The problem is that people often have this misconception: if somebody in a discussion thinks different, that is an offense. They don't always see it as a part of the discussion process, and I can see why. It's because a potential offense is within ourselves. Externally it expresses itself as anger.

So, such things as respect, ability to also see good points within the pile of opponent's 'wrongs', self-control, modesty (and a bunch of other good stuff) could be a big help to keep a discussion healthy.

Have JB or GF thought about adding a thumbs up or like button for posts? So many times I want to send the writer an appreciative thank you, but that clutters up the comment thread.

Thank you. I often have not read the comments because of sifting through the stuff of nonsense.

Sometimes nonsense here at DB is my favorite part. Read the SSH /Hand Towel shower posts for one example.

There is that kind of Hand Towel nonsense, which is ROTF funny, vs the kind of nonsense that puts ppl down for no reason other than the person who writes it is rude and aims to be insulting, like #44 above.

First off, THANKS so much for the site.
My mother, who recently passed had never seen a Korean Drama until she stayed at my home for two weeks. During that time we watched a couple of shows and had were almost done watching Best Love. She had to return home before we finished. She couldn't figure out how to watch the videos, so I sent her links to your recaps of the final episodes so she would know the ending. I will ALWAYS be grateful to you for this.
Second off, this site has seemed to me one of the most polite of all the ones I read. (This includes political, business, and other social sites.) Maybe I am oblivious, but I haven't noticed much douche baggery. Probably because you're so proactive.
Again, thanks.

I'm glad you ladies have implemented this policy that is sure to improve the comment section and promote blog-friendly comments. Dramabeans has always been a blog for people to come and express their opinions in a smart, insightful, witty, or humorous way.

Another thing -- I hope people don't feel discouraged to comment for worry that their comment is not without grammar mistakes or the most perfect, well-thought analysis. As long as we can follow the thought process without scratching our heads you're good. For those that don't use capitalization, that's fine too as long as it's not a block of text without commas or periods. Those are more of a pet peeve for me than capitalization.

Happy blogging everyone!

Reading from a computer screen is harder than reading a book.

Adding white space to break up big blocks of text helps.

So does including topic headlines (ex. the name of the drama you are discussing in caps at the beginning of the paragraph, so those OT folks skimming can find topics that interest them easily.)

Since I am probably the worst offender, I promise I will never quibble about spelling and grammatical errors.

The biggest problem with that un-ending block of text without punctuation, capitalization, or topic heading is folks won't read it. We know you post so others can hear your thoughts, so take our suggestions for how to make it more readable as us leaning forward eagerly to hear what you have to say.
