Ha Ji-won’s action-filled first shoot for Empress Ki

I know it’s nothing new to see Ha Ji-won (The King 2 Hearts) doing her action heroine thing, but it’s never dull, I’ll tell you that. Not that I doubted the heroine of this drama would be a badass when Ha Ji-won took the role, but it’s nice to see that before she becomes the power-wielding empress of Yuan, she’ll fight and ride with the best of men. ‘Cause she’s awesome like that. Here she is on the set of MBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama, historical epic Empress Ki, dressed as a man and galloping along on horseback like it’s easy.
I have to say, they did the right thing in releasing stills of the heroine in action. I’m really not sold on the 50-episode length of this drama, but if she’s going to spend a good portion of it as a down-‘n’-dirty brawler, I could be convinced to watch it. There’s no explanation for the scene, but the drama calls itself the eventful life story of the Goryeo-born woman who eventually becomes empress of Yuan, so I’m guessing tumultuous ups and downs are part of the package.
She’ll have the love of not one, but two kings — Joo Jin-mo (Coffee) the Goryeo king and Ji Chang-wook (Five Fingers) the young Yuan emperor who meets her while exiled in Goryeo. Kim Seo-hyung (History of the Salaryman) plays the empress dowager who becomes her biggest political rival, while Baek Jin-hee (I Summon You, Gold) plays the woman Ji Chang-wook’s family arranges for him to marry. I’d be a happy camper if this drama had at least as much action as court intrigue, but I won’t hold my breath on that score.
Empress Ki replaces Goddess of Fire Jung-yi and premieres October 28.

And same... I don't know what to think of this. As much as I loved HJW in her last drama - which I also loved - a 50 episode Sageuk is so not tempting. But she's probably the only actress I'd give this a chance for, so who knows?

I am guessing all the action in episode one then comes the court intrigue end of action but for maybe a few set scenes most like already in the can from the first episodes shooting, battle scene cost money after all, sitting in a pre build setting wearing clothes worn in the last but last before the last sageuk, cost little. Also of course the longer it goes the tigher the time limit.. will we all know how it goes...and this one 50 episodes

Really, you are way off here, and you should check out the trailers for both films. The Huntresses is a silly but possibly fun action comedy, while this is a historical drama. The only thing they have in common is old-time costumes.

I've heard people making this comment before about Ha Ji Won. Could you please be more specific? What sort of role should she be playing that you would approve of? About the only one she hasn't played in the last few years is straight melodrama or "hero's girlfriend," and we already have way, way too many fine actresses wasting their time doing Makjang and propping up Boy's Clubs in revenge dramas.

Yea, I really don't get this complaint either. Even within the same genre, there will be differences in characters and she has been playing different characters.
In any case, I'm totally with GF on this; I just don't get tired of seeing her in action films. Actually, any actresses who can act and do crazy action stuff is cool in my book. I would love to see her be in a film like War of the Arrows.

Since what I can remember, she's always played this strong, resilient, femme fatale ish character with vulnerable heart. Basically she's always been an iron clad teddy bear in her last half dozen projects. Even when she was in a romcom, she was STILL an ass kicking stunt woman. I mean, awesome girl power and all, but man, it's getting old. I'd love to see her diversifying it a bit with girly roles in a strong romcom. Heck, revenge dramas can definitely be elevated with her screen presence and acting skills. Why always go for the same-ish character?

Well, I would say there is nothing heroine for her roles as a funny student in "Love so divine" or as a pianist in "BA:BO" or her awarding winning role in "Closer to Heaven". She has played pretty girly roles in these movies.
I found your comments funny. Please name one Korean actress whom has played more diversifying roles than Ha jiwon. I think it will be a difficult task! I will not link "Ha jiwon's name" with "same-ish" character!!

So far Ha Ji Won has played characters in horror movies, thrillers, actions movies, rom-coms, sageuks, fantasy sageuks, melodramas, teen comedies, even one sports movie. I really can't think of another Korean actress who has played a more diverse roster of roles. Still, on every article about one of her projects there's at least one comment complaining about her being typecast. Does people really have no idea about the kind of career she's had? 20 movies and 14 tv dramas...

If they only had saguek versions of characters like the Penguin, or Mr. Freeze or the Catwoman, at least it would be funny.

I accidently got hooked on one of those 100+ ep family dramas and thought never again. Then got caught up in three 50 ep KBS weekend dramas after Ojakgyo Brothers, the last being IU's drama. I thought I was finally through with them but now you have Uee, Jung II Woo, and Kim Yoo Jung in one and Yeo Jin Goo in one of those 100+ ep sitcoms. Love Ha Ji Won and Ji Chang Wook but a half a year is a long time to watch a saeguk. I think I'll watch their drama when it's over so I can zip right through it.

While I absolutely love Ha Ji Won, I'm not sure if I WANT to spend 50 episodes on a Saeguk. I've tried to go wade my way into saeguk-land SLOWLY and I've managed to see those that are 20-24 episodes.. I tried my best to see a 32 episode one and ended up dropping it at episode 25... The thing is I like my drama's short and sweet, and even if the heroine is a bad-ass and the story may seem enthralling, I dont think I'll make the decision to sit down for 50 hours of my life on it (I have homework to so and other drama's to watch ^^). I'll wait to see what the general "feels" for this one is, but I don't think I'll make the time to watch this completely. Here's hoping it's good, and if not hopefully I'll see Ha Ji Won's next project.

Heo Jun was inspiring, this is the opposite. You have a crazy cruel rapist as the hero and a power hungry opium empress as the heroine but they will be sugarcoated to the max cause this is dramaland.

Is it wrong that I get a bit upset when I see my favorite actors cast in a 50 to 100 episode drama?
I feel cheated because I want to watch their work, but can't get myself to watch the whole thing! The worst part is I used to always watch looong shows (before I discovered Kdrama)...but I must be getting old, because my patience for long stories is gone. :(
Anyway, I really enjoy watching Ha Ji-Won's acting, so I think I will check out the first episodes at least.

I'm with you on the child potion of it especially when we have Dr Jin's director at the helm. I wouldn't hesitate to watch it if it was someone like Director Lee Dong Yoon from QC.
On the other hand we Jang who is a solid writer and has a pretty long sageuk under his belt and the reason why I want to watch this.

I read that netizens are not happy about the Emperor hairstyle. when it should be 'pigtail' hairstyle the bts of him showed something else. I'm personally happy about his hairstyle now, I mean this is 50 ep saguek we need something good to look at. Please people don't take this as offence. No historical accuracy should be violated by changing his hairstyle a bit I guess! It's only a drama and we know how kdrama works... attractive male lead is a plus

Costumes and grooming are essential aspects of cultural/personal identity. What's the point in using real historical figures if you can't even respect something as basic as that? Why not just create some alternate Goryeo/Yuan empire and give everybody new names?

Those netizens nitpick on things and conveniently gloss over others: What did the people look like in those times? Certainly not Gangnam citizens (tall, whitened teeth, perfect skin...). Riders didn't use modern saddles & as a twitter friend said, mirrors where the Princesses can check themselves didn't exist either. This is a drama, not a documentary pretending to be exact. Heck, even James Cameron had to compromise for Titanic and he is a maniac. >.>

Old school sageuks back in the days tried to stick with traditions but things have changed so much since the late 1900s and early 2000s. We have more fusions now than conventional sageuks. Sad thing is we have very few veteran writers left like Jung Ha Yun who's work I still respect and follow.

I dunno, I always thought pigtails are found only in the Qing dynasty which was like, 200 years after the fall of Yuan dynasty, so his hair is not a problem to me. I think he would look good in whatever though.

Geesus, you people... it's a Fusion Sageuk, fer chrissakes. It's not being produced as an exact word-for-word recreation of history. If the viewing public wanted such a drama, they would be bored to tears or horrified at the storyline. Naysayers should go down to Gyeongju and watch the documentaries at the museums there instead. *hmpf*
If anything, my Crack Korean History Understanding Skillz have gone up 5000% in reading and research in preparing for this show. Yeah, it's not a pretty time in world events but at least someone is making the effort to bring us something different.

I wonder how far a real true to life depiction of how life really was in those times would do?
I suspect not very well - it would be pretty ugly and not near as romantic or as clean. I doubt people would gush over depictions of streets and rivers as sewers. Ever notice how there are never any bathroom scenes in sageuks? :D

I watched Queen Seon Deok from start to finish and if this show can at least capture a similar vibe, I will watch this from start to finish as well. Hoping Empress Gi has the same screen presence as Mi Shil.

Regardless of the time period, a story of a slave who rises to become an Empress makes for a powerful story. The real Empress Gi would have to have been an intelligent and very charismatic individual to have done that. If Ha Ji Won can project that charisma through the small screen, I know I'll watch the whole drama, 50 episodes notwithstanding :)

The real Empress Ki was beautiful, she would n't have gone far with an ugly face. She drugged the emperor to keep him under her thumb (smart? yes). She was all about power and didn't give a crap about her poor country when she was in a position to help them.
Queen Noguk who was a Mongolian princess loved the Goryeo people and tried to ease their burdens even when they treated her like an outcast. It's too bad she died before Yuan collapsed because Gongmin went crazy and abandoned his duties.

I'll be watching this drama.I just hope somebody can translate it in English or do an English subtitle.I' ve watched Queen Seondok and I'll do the same for Empress Ki since it's my favorite korean actress. I'm sure we will see a different HJW if the role calls for intrigue and a conniving queen.She does not need to play a good character every time.I would like to see a different HJW if the role calls for it.

Why do people still insist so much with what they call historical accuracy,when the history itself can be twisted and turned by the people in power with some political influences.i mean come on,someone who is labelled a con in a country can be a hero in another country depends on which side you see it.there are so many version of henry tudor story made by american and british filmmakers,and they're all different.if people want to study about history,movies and dramas can't be references,unless you watch documentary.i think the most important thing about movies or dramas is what values you can take from the story.just the different wardrobes and hairstyle won't bother me at all.

Totally agree with you. Netizens seem to have turned historical "expert" over night and have deep knowledge about all the events that went on during that period. They maintain that Empress Ki must be faithful to the actual events that took place. BUT, can we trust the sources of all the write-ups to begin with?
In this instance, it is amazing that a number of people insist that the Empress was a bad bad girl as she had gone on a killing spree and she should therefore be depicted as such throughout. If the drama includes incidents which they have not read or heard about (eg. a softer side of her) then it has no value as it is not truthful. Come on, these were happenings in the 1300s. Even the so called historical people who wrote those tales did not have a complete picture as to what exactly went on on a daily basis. They can only give an overview as some facts would have definitely been lost during the course of time. Have you ever played the "pass the message game"?
So just ask yourself why watch a drama. If you want to be fed just facts, go watch a documentary. However, be mindful that even documentaries are not fully reliable either as they are manipulated and heavily edited to suit the producers’ leanings.

I'm not afraid to admit it - I'm scared of MBC. Their portrayal of historicals/sagueks and 50 episodes for me have not been positive for 2013 (most of them have been either boring or a mess to put it lightly). I do like the cast but as stated before am scared of what the powers that be will do to the story itself.
Will check it out (I like historicals) but will hold reservations for a good while.

Well, the late Goryeo period is waaaaaaaaaaaaay distant than the Three Kigndoms period though...
At least the costumes might be more beautiful than "Shindon" & "Faith" combined...

I was talking about MBC and how cheap they usually are by reusing the same costumes and set for different dramas.
Faith was done by SBS and Shin Don was way back in 2007 (my fav Goryeo era sageuk).
Ha Ji Won's red robe is kind of similar to Kim Hye Ri's but the crown is different.
I don't see the same costumes and set with this show which is great. I think writer Jang wants to explore the Yuan's side of the history here. Looks like he's going 50/50 between Goryeo and Yuan.

There are not many anymore - I think Drama Fever Premium is the only one. Hulu is better, with like 2 30 sec commercials every 15 min. But either of those may or may not have the drama you are looking for, not everything gets subbed, although I suspect this will be.
Viki I think is going to come up with a premium option, but no idea when. Right now pretty much all the sites are packed with commercials and ads.

You can actually watch ad free on Viki if you time your watching well. They don't add the ads until after a few languages are subbed/edited (this is just a theory), so if you catch it during that period when the English subs are just finished or almost finished, you can have a decent watching experience. I did that for most of Master's Sun, but I don't know how well it will work with Empress Ki.

It is frustrating. I'm going through the first seven episodes of 'Suspicious Housekeeper,' skipping the lame, obvious scenes--which is any scene that doesn't include Choi Ji-Woo--and I have to keep my Kindle available. Three minutes of drama out of ten, two minutes of commercials--repeat, repeat. I'm really hating Pop Tarts at this point. It takes twice as long to skim through it.

I don't mind commercials if it's a drama or movie trailer like The Hunger Games, Catching Fire trailer. I wont hate it if I watch it over and over but food is quite the opposite.
I'm guessing viki is run by different people now or am I mistaken?

Anything with Ha Ji Won, I'm in :)
What I really love about Ha Ji Won...besides from her badass self is, she's not afraid to look dirty and downplay her prettiness. Oh yeah, according to what I've read or watched her co-stars and the people that she worked with speaks very highly of her. That is why I love love this lady.

I love HJW.Will be watching the drama.I don't care how long it is.Sadly,I cannot seem to find a drama that I like this 2013.Hope this will be a drama that will showcase HJW acting ability whether she play the good or bad role.

Ha Ji Won is a great actress with every part of her body. It is fun to watch her even in BTS clips. One moment she is this giggling, shy, homebody, then she's suddenly aware of the camera and posing or acting and radiant again.
She was off, giggly and hesitant for most of her appearance on Running Man, but in the last possible moment she did something that was pure Ha Ji Won. When Kwang Soo walks through a door, Ji Won and Ji Hyo are on either side. He is facing Ji Won, and she has to distract him--which she does just by looking at him. Their eyes lock, he takes three steps sideways into the room, mesmerized, and Ji Hyo nails him.

50 episodes is too long, maybe 1 recap per 5 episodes would be reasonable.

The last picture of her smiling on the horse has her looking both cute and attractive and yet strong as well to me. She's awesome. I am not sure I'll watch the show or not but I am really tempted!

Feels like another Hwang Jini/Queen Seon Deok/Jang Geum kind of daebak drama in the making. Typical story of a female finding her own mighty ways from nothing to turn out into something big. Bet this will win the hearts of drama lovers... what do we have on Mon-Tues? With rivals's Mirae's Choice and Suspicious Housekeeper, i dare forecast, Empress Ki will be a monster hit. Lead actor and actress are A-listers, who definitely can act and a nice plot that every level of audience can embrace.

I think its great that you are optimistic about the ratings. The main audience for sageuks are ajummas. Empress Ki is not actually admired by the older generations like they do with QSD and Dae Jang Geum. She is considered a traitor and it doesn't help that King Chung-hye is the hero here.
I don't think it'll be an epic hit like QSD and DJG (both National dramas) but you never know. There is a lot of sensitive issues with this show already but hopefully it make people curious enough to check it out.

Looking forward to this! Since The Master's Sun ended I have no kdramas to watch. I don't find any of the current kdramas interesting but thankfully this has come along.

Love this.I don't mind 50 episodes at all.The scenery is astounding,cinematography is great.
Love the intrigue.Some great fighting scenes,romance,intrigue ,what more could a girl wish for...
