Fantasy ghostbusting sageuk in the works with Night Watchman

A Joseon Ghostbusters? Pwa! A Joseon Ghostbusters starring flower boys? SOLD. Gimme now, please and thank you.

The Records of a Night Watchman is the name of the drama series, which will be a quirky fantasy-sageuk centered around a foursome of young bodyguards who are part of the palace night watch and protect the king. They patrol after curfew hours and figure out ways of nabbing ghosts on the loose, all while bonding and falling in love and all that good stuff. With Sungkyungkwan Scandal being such a popular hit, I wonder that it took them (them being the Powers That Be in dramaland) to follow it up with another “national youth sageuk,” which is the hope for this new drama.

The four leads will display varied charms, naturally, which is what you get when you dream up an F4 (or H4, or whatever acronym we’re on to now). And as with Sungkyunkwan, we’ll be getting one lady working with (and being loved by?) three men. Among the men you’ve got the cold elite one (of course), one who’s hostile to women, and another who isn’t described but who I’m guessing is the eccentric cute one. Just a hunch, based on every drama ever featuring a quartet of friends.

Writing The Records of a Night Watchman is Yoo Dong-yoon of King and I, Age of Warriors, and King’s Dream (so, no stranger to the world of sageuk), while PD Lee Joo-hwan of Jumong and Shin Don will be directing. Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s production company will be backing the project.

The Records of a Night Watchman is planning for a broadcast in the latter half of the year. I guess I’ll have to put my waiting hat on. And then stomp on it in impatience.

You have no idea how sad I am to burst your bubble *sniffs* but idol companies would be all over this drama like a rash, cos in Korea idols and flower boys come hand in hand. The only 2 things I'm going to climb a mountain to pray about is that the idols that would be chosen should at least be decent acting wise and the name suzy should not come within 50 mile radius of the casting director's brain.

I think there's hope. All the Flower Boy series had actors as the leads. Shut up had some idols, but it was a musical drama so it made sense. And in SKKS all of the leads were actors except for Yoochun. I think we'll probably get an actor for this, but if not, then there are promising idols out there so hopefully we'll get one of the better ones *fingers crossed* I agree about Suzy though. I like her well enough, but her acting...is, well, nonexistent. I want this project to be perfect so no!

The article doesn't say anything about it being part of tvN's Flower Boy series so I don't know if you can base your expectations on that. I think it is highly likely that at least one idol will be featured in this foursome cast. Let's just hope it's one of the one's who can act and if not, let's at least hope that he is not the main lead.

Oh yeah I know that it's not part of the Oh! Boy series. She wrote that idols and flower boys go hand in hand so I was just pointing out that there have been many dramas all about flower boys that have avoided idol casting the main leads at the very least. Still I agree that, of course, it's very likely to happen, just as it's likely for idols to get cast in every other drama out there because, let's face it, most dramas do have an idol involved. I actually don't mind it too much if it's a role that suits their abilities well though so hopefully this drama will take that into account :) If anything, SKKS goes to show that (good) idol castings don't make you enjoy a fantastic drama any less :)

park yoo-chun was excellent in skks, so idols in dramas aren't necessarily bad. still, i hope we get talented unknowns like song joong-ki and yoo ah-in had been before skks.

I would say a big "No, please!" I love those two to bits but can't imagine them in this sageuk. Maybe it's all the mention of Suzy... lol somehow that made me think the show's gonna be bad. I want to see these 2 babes like, forever on screen but no, not this. Ghostbusters? No ~~ (T_T)

Let it be some other flower boys instead.

I agree with those choices! I'm praying slightly more for Im Joo-Hwan though! I love and miss him in a good project and it's about time he get cast in an actual drama for his army-comeback, not a sitcom!

Also I'm not sure if Kim Jae-Wook would fit well in this drama, but I always pray for him, if only so he can finally nab the lead in a drama!

I don't mind if it's an idol, as long as said idol is a good actor. Like, say, Seo In-gook? No problem.

But I kind of want Kang Haneul as the lead here. He's so talented, I can't believe he's never led his own drama before.

How come nobody mentioned Kang Min Hyuk for a role?!?! He was amazingly talented and funny and adorable and charming in Unexpected You as Kim Nam Joo's baby brother. By the way, that drama was written by the screenwriter who wrote You From Another Star. So if you haven't watched it yet, you ought to. A lot of hilarious and touching scenes in Unexpected You, too. And you'll get to see Kang Min Hyuk! He was just superb.

What is an actor? I believe an actor is someone who is able to portray a character's feelings, mannerisms, and actions in an accurate and believable manner. Anyone that can do this is an actor. Are Kim Woo Bin and Lee Jon Suk not capable actors? They started out as models. There are also good actors that started out as idols. Yoochun comes to mind. Our precious Lee Seung Gi also debuted as a singer. So it upsets me when people say that idols should stay away. How about we say that people that can't act should stay away? How about we say that companies should not push idols, singers, models, or other less experienced actors that would not be able to do the job well?

Oohhhh sounds promising! :) But will the heroine be cross dressing? Are there female bodyguards in the joseon era?

I hope it will not be a cross dressing drama though, to set it apart from Sungkyunkwan. I know having the ghost element is different but I hope the writers and the production company will find a way to incorporate the heroine in the story. Perhaps she could be a young shaman working in the palace? Hahaha

Doubt there were official female bodyguards in the Confucian Joseon era.

That said, there may be unofficial female bodyguards, as in, trained to fight and working as personal maids close to an aristo lady.

Thank you, Dramaland. THIS is what I've been waiting for, and I didn't even know it.

It's funny because I just finished rewatching Sungkyukwan Scandal and found myself wondering why there hadn't been anymore dramas quite like that one, especially when there have been so many successful trends in recent years.

It's also funny because NOW I'm rewatching Arang and the Magistrate as well and found myself longing for more dramas as quirky and whimsical as that one. Now this drama almost seems like combination of the two!!! Both were so good that this has got to be even better right?!

Such a lovely premise! Can't Wait!

I'm also going to have a lot of fun guessing at who might get cast! A lot of my favorites have been cast in upcoming projects recently, but it would be nice if perhaps we could get a lead that hasn't been around dramaland for awhile. I wonder who would be good for this project...

Why bother to scout for leads? :) :) They have a foursome ready. Might as well get the leads from SKKS. At least Yoo Ah In. Dint he like become a security like person?

Please dramagods let Kang Ha Neul be the lead! Please, please, please!!! The guy is so talented and he deserves a big break a la SKKS.

and also Yoon Doo Joon, he can be the next Micky Yoochun!

For the female lead, I hope it will also be a relatively new one who's just waiting for her big break. Maybe someone on the level like, let's say Dohee?

I did think of Yoon Doo Joon actually because I loved him in Let's Eat, but for some reason I don't see him getting involved in this even if it could be great. He's got great comedic timing for sure.

I could get behind Kang Ha Nuel because he was delightful in Angel Eyes. I can't even watch the adult portion because it already doesn't live up to his portion.

I also want Yoo Yeon Suk for this, but he has so much on his plate. This drama isn't for awhile though so maybe his casting can be an upside of the wait?

Yoon Shi Yoon also crossed my mind. I don't think he's ever done a sanguek before has he? I'd like to see him as the lead of something good before army duty! Speaking of army duty, I'm kinda sad Song Joong-ki isn't around to take part in this :(

Hopefully they have it focus heavily on the friendship aspects or at least make the romance more nuanced than "girl and guy whos elite and snooty but grows out of it" because it bores me and in most trendies I don't buy it. At least in SKKS I genuinely felt that they fit together beyond that and helped each other grow.
Hope it's great! Really really hoping because I've been wanting a drama like this again for so long I actually forgot I wanted it.

Having said that, I'm excited for this (and the vampire one too!) It should be fun, if done well, and as long as they don't cast someone named Suzy, Han Ga-in or Shin Se-kyung, I'll probably watch it. They're some of the free actresses right now, but I'm running very far from that radius.

Now that I think about it, Kim Bum has never had a lead role in a drama that was centered mainly on his character (or I haven't watched it). Min hyuk from cnblue
