News bites: April 11, 2015

  • While the articles were supposed to be about his cameo in the upcoming film Lucid Dream, I was more struck by the realization that Yoochun (Girl Who Sees Smells) will be heading to the military soon — waaah! He’ll have a bit part in the movie as a character who helps Go Soo, a father whose child’s been kidnapped. Go will use his dreams to find clues to bring his child home safely, and Sol Kyung-gu and Kang Hye-jung also round out the cast. Lucid Dream began filming at the end of March and will be released in the latter half of this year, so at least the big-screen release will help tide us over until Yoochun returns. [Dong A, TV Report]
  • Lee Jia (Thrice Married Woman) and Kim Min-joon (Seonam Girls’ High Investigation Unit) are reviewing proposals to star in the upcoming military thriller Musudan. (More recent news reports indicate the actors have signed up and are finalizing contract details, but as we know, casting changes happen often in the industry.) Lee’s been busy; she’s also contracted to write three screenplays for U.S. production company Maybach Film Productions, and she’s just polished off her first, a script titled Conscious Perception. [Osen, Hankook Economy]

  • Lee Jia, Kim Min-joon

  • Yoon Je-moon (Three Days) will collaborate with movie vet Oh Dal-soo in The Great Actor, a film previously titled Emperor of Acting. The plot sounds like an interesting meta look at the lives of actors, and Yoon will play a man who starts out as a stage actor and becomes a famous movie star (Yoon started out in theater in real life). Oh will play a stage actor who continues to struggle (all right, that’s more of a stretch), and The Great Actor will be directed by Seok Min-ho, an assistant director on Oldboy. Cameras will start rolling in early May. [Star News]
  • A slight disappointment, but with a silver lining: Shin Mina has turned down the part opposite Lee Seon-kyun in Love Is a Virus. That would’ve been a fun pairing, but on the bright side, she may be returning to dramaland soon. In her place, Kim Ok-bin (Yoo-na’s Street) is favorably considering the female lead in the film, which will be about a disease that causes symptoms similar to the sensations of being head over heels in love. The first afflicted will be Kim, and we’ll find out whether the sparks that fly between her and the primary researcher (Lee) can be attributed to the bug, or something more. Love Is a Virus begins filming in the latter half of the year. [Osen]

  • Kim Ok-bin, Lee Soo-kyung

  • The soon-to-begin daily drama High and Mighty Family has cast its female lead: Lee Soo-kyung (Let’s Eat) will play the daughter of a wealthy family. As the middle sister of three, she’s described as a competitive and competent alpha-female. She’s always thrown herself into her work, but when she falls for a younger (and subordinate on the corporate ladder) “macho man,” her mother highly disapproves. The show will follow along as Lee moves into her in-laws’ patriarchal household, and her character will alternate between bouts of filial obedience and hypocrisy. High and Mighty Family begins airing on MBC next month. [Star News]
  • Han Eun-jung (Iron Man) and Jo Dong-hyuk (Bad Guys) have been cast as the headlining duo in Love At the End Of the World, a comeback film from director Kim In-shik (Hypnotized, Road Movie). There isn’t much info available on the plot, and given the director’s diverse style it’s hard to tell what kind of tone he’ll take, but Han will play a university lecturer, and Jo her counterpart. Unlike Jo’s previous tough guy personas, he’ll play a thoughtful, considerate gentleman. Filming begins April 20 and the movie will hit theaters late this year. [SBS funE]

  • Jo Dong-hyuk, Han Eun-jung

  • Signal was supposed to be SBS’s late summer Wed-Thurs drama, but the project scripted by writer Kim Eun-hee (Three Days), a small-screen remake of the hit film Memories of Murder, failed to get picked up. The show was up for the timeslot against Will You Have Dinner With Me, the webtoon-based drama courting Shin Mina to lead, and the latter won out. A source indicated that the material, a gritty thriller about a string of unsolved murders, was too problematic for primetime TV. The script hasn’t been shelved yet and the project could receive a different time slot, but things aren’t looking good. [Star News]
  • The younger counterparts of the main couple in JTBC’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama Beloved Eun-dong have been cast: Yoon So-hee (Secret Door) will play Kim Sa-rang in her 20s, while Baek Sung-hyun will play Joo Jin-mo’s younger self. One point of confusion is that Joo/Baek’s first love is named Eun-dong (hence the title), while Kim/Yoon’s character is named Jung-eun. The reports all make it sound as though Yoon and Baek will be re-enacting the pair’s puppy love days though, so perhaps Eun-dong’s a nickname? Beloved Eun-dong airs after Falling For Innocence in June. [TV Report, Xports News]

  • Baek Sung-hyun, Yoon So-hee

Ikr And since YunHo is the same age as YooChun I expect them to see each other, hopefully they served the same unit as JaeJoong.. I still pine for TVXQ to be friends again or hopefully reunite, to be part so abruptly and so "bloody" like that if it can mend, eventually...I think only military will mend it..Together again in close proximity without the interference of others but themselves will make them see reason that one is better than two (for their case)..
And if JunSu decide to join the bandwagon..ooo yes..
If G.O.D can get back together despite the fact that each of them sign with different company, why can't TVXQ, right? if only to give a closure performance for their long awaited fans....

Will miss Yoochun. He has to leave just as he is getting better and better in acting. I'm glad he will go on a high note. Current drama is "Girl Who sees Smells" is a really fun turn for him. We got to see his serious side in Sea Fog, and a more comedic vein here.

Lucid Dream seems to be shaping up nicely. Two years without Chunface will be sad.

I was almost sad about Love is a Virus but Kim! Ok! Bin! PLEASE SAY YES.

Jo Dong-hyuk. *sighs contentedly* Aren't his films generally erotic? *blushes*

Aw isn't anyone else ready for Baek Sung-hyun to get his own spot? I hope he'll at least get a lead on cable soon. Your hard work will pay off soon!

I still remember Baek Seung-hyun from White Christmas, it feels like almost everyone from that cast broke out harder than he did but sometimes slow and steady is a good approach too.

I'm also ready for Yoon So-hee to score her own lead spot somewhere, but hopefully she and BSH will be cute together.

That's true, his approach certainly has my respect, especially considering his choices are on point from what I've seen. Plus I suppose when he does get his breakout role and everyone else is like KYAAA I'll be among those who are all psshh I've liked him for a minute. That has its own satisfaction.

I've liked Baek Sung Hyun since watching him play the young Jang Po Go in Emperor of the Sea. He isn't as flashy as some of the other actors in his age range, but he brings a lovely emotional groundedness to his work. He's definitely an actor I'd like to see more of.

Do you think Kim Ok Bin would work even better opposite Lee Seon-kyun than Shin Min-ah? Never seen her in anything.

Kim Ok-bin is a great character actress who lives in the skin of her characters differently than most actresses (even other ones I like). IMO she matches Lee Seon-kyun's everyman-ness better than Shin Mina. Though it may just be that when Shin Mina plays a role I see Shin Mina not [insert character here].

Two recommendations to see Kim Ok-bin: Over My Dead Body, an awesome comedy which no words can adequately describe before hand. Just watch it. And Yoo-na's Street a beautiful craftsmanship of a drama which put to death every preconceived notion I had on shows of its length and for most of its run owned me so that I would've watched 100. See also: Thirst: I haven't seen it but it's a critically lauded film in which she plays opposite Song Kang-ho and I think that was her breakout role.

Yeah, some actors are just so glamorous/big that it becomes hard to see them disappear into their characters. I'm glad that it seems Kim Ok-bin's acting style matches that of LSK's. Can't wait to see how it will shape up.

I thought Shin Mina matched Jo Jong-seok's everyman-ness in My Love, My Bride quite well - for someone known for her beauty, she's actually quite decent at managing to differentiate her characters. Her performances are never interchageable, at least.

But Kim Ok-bin is on another level, she's really much more suited to movies than dramas, especially ones on the Big 3. Movies are a much better channel for her talents than stuff like Sword & Flower.

Hi Pogo,
Why do you think that is though? That Kim Ok-bin is more suited to movies than dramas? Would that mean that acting a character is not just that, whether it being in a movie, or in a drama? I have never seen KOB in anything (and I didn't watch Sword and FLower or Yoona's Street), so I am trying to visualize and understand what you meant, but it is not working :-( Do you think you could say more, please?

0

Ivoire:

I think he means and what i would say as big Kim Ok Bin fan after seeing Yoona's street is that she is very talented, versaitile actress too good to play simple melodrama, rom com in the big three where they usually choose leading ladies on their looks or idols fame. There is good dramas in those networks too but those dramas are rare.

Korean cinema is more indy like films like cable dramas in JTBC ala Yoona, Secret Love Affair. I rather see her get a serious movie role or a serious drama role with great writing like the cable dramas i mentioned.

Sword and Flower made her look bad because it was terrible, genre drama compared to Thirst by Chan Wook Park or drama like Yoona.

You guys have definitely gotten me even more interested in checking out Kim Ok-bin in Love is a Virus. Too bad she does not have a large international fan base and neither does LSK so I don't suppose there will be much noise about this movie around these parts.

0

@ Mohammed,
This is late, however thank you for explaining. That helped.

I love Kim Ok Bin onni since watching SG Wannabes's MV Arirang... As a 20+ minutes music video that served more as a short movie, it really inspiring and the cast is superb and amazing...Lee Beom Su oppa jjang...

Also good news re: Kim Ok-bin, who was awesome in Yoona's Street and really seems ideal for movies.

And Yoon So-hee's doing another JTBC drama as the younger version of the heroine? Hope this one stays good all the way into the adult version and doesn't get cancelled like Wild Chives & Soybean Soup. She and Lee Won-gun were the best part of that.

Signal rejected? Oh well we already had Gap Dong. What's the point in repeating the same plot? Look at what happened to The King's face or HJM. Don't waste the actors' time for nothing. And isn't that girl in the last set of pics from Marriage, not dating? If it is, well it's good that she's getting the opportunity to work on her acting some more in minor parts because she's still far from being good enough for a main part.

Lee Jia! I've been wondering what she's been doing since I haven't seen any news about her in a while. Is her new acting project a movie or a drama? If her character is in the military, I think that is a good fit for her, but I wish there were more information. And she's taken up screenwriting - wishing her success with that as well.

Everyone doesn't. Just the men. Which is a real bone of contention for some of my male Korean friends, who feel it is inherently unfair that they are obligated by law to give up 2 years of their youth, whilst women give up nothing.

0

Required fields are marked *

well, aren't women in Korea pretty much expected to give up working altogether once they get married/have families?

But I guess since that's not an actual law, Korean men keep thinking they have it worse than women.

Required fields are marked *

Hmm, none of my Korean female friends have given up work, and frankly, have no intentions to give up, despite what the older generation may think. I do believe that the men have a point though, giving up 2 years of your life as a legal requirement should not be determined merely by the fact that you have been born male. I believe that either everyone should serve in some capacity (every one is conscripted in Israel, seems to work for them ok), or Korea should adopt the professional army model. It doesn't help that the wages whilst in the army are abysmal either, making the young men feel that all the burden is on them, whilst young women are free to develop their careers or enhance their education.

0

Required fields are marked *

I definitely agree that it's a huge burden on the men, but the existence of military service shouldn't be used to deny the problems women do face, is all.

0

You are right Korean women i have seen in news, documentaries facemany problems western women doesnt face like becoming housewife even if you are a powerful careerwomen once you have a child, get married. Men dont have as much to complain about.

But it is still not good for gender equality that only men must by law work away two years in the military. Doesnt matter its a traditionally pathrialcal culture you shouldnt treat by law one gender better than the other.

It should by choice for both genders or force both genders to go to the military like in Israel.

Yaaass! Kang Hye Jung!!!

So Park Yoochun's juggling both TGWSS and filming Lucid Dream as well? He needs to slow it down a bit as he needs to be healthy for his upcoming enlistment right after his drama. I suppose they're entering the live-filming stage right now, seeing as they didn't have any preview for episode 5. Tsk.

I'm very much anticipating Lucid Dream for Go Soo and Kang Hye Jung. I miss both of them in dramaland.
