Kolorful Palette: Jeju warmth [Warm and Cozy]

Ahhh…Jeju Island. I absolutely love it when dramas are filmed there. The background settings are always gorgeous and I absolutely love the light. What a perfect place for a drama called Warm and Cozy.

At first this drama had me quite taken aback because it just didn’t feel Hong sisters-esque, and I was starting to wonder if they hired ghostwriters or something. I was enjoying it perfectly well, but my expectations had me feeling a bit off-kilter while I watched the first episode. Then Jung-joo threw an imaginary spear at her cheating boyfriend and everything clicked into place. I thought the second episode was the perfect blend of charming sweetness and zany antics, and the minutes flew by despite the lack of dense plot.

I think what made time go by so quickly is that I wasn’t impatiently waiting for anything specific to happen or impatiently waiting for something uninteresting to end. I already like all the characters so much that I was perfectly content to just sit back and watch their rather mundane interactions. I think it takes deft writing to properly pull such a drama off, so I’m glad that it’s the Hong sisters who are taking this one on. It’s also a nice change of pace for them, and I’m hoping it’ll see as much success as their kookier fare.

I primarily chose to draw this scene because I loved the setting (I expect that will be happening a lot in this drama) but it also represents what I like about these characters. Jung-joo is strong and pragmatic, and rather than sitting there wailing about her loser boyfriend and her bad luck, she stoically washes the poop off her shoe (which she also had on her face!!). Even when she hears that she’s lost her job, she keeps it together pretty well despite being stunned, and doesn’t even fall apart in front of Gun-woo’s cute attempts to console her. Female leads in dramas are often annoyingly emotive and over the top (it tends to rub me the wrong way since I’m more the emotionless robot type) so I find Jung-joo to be a refreshing and admirable change of pace.

Gun-woo on the other hand is just so freaking kind-hearted I can hardly believe it (compared to what we’ve come to expect of rich stereotypes). It’s not just Jung-joo’s nonexistent cancer that’s making him that way either. Sure, he’s more of a cheeseball because of it, but he was already surprisingly nice ten years ago, and it never feels like he has to force himself. It’s a relief to know that every wealthy character out there doesn’t need to be completely rehabilitated by a spunky poor girl. Instead, I expect that the two of them will simply help each other grow and find happiness, and that’s a lot easier to relate to.

My original plan with this drawing was to use palette knives, but to use them I first have to lay down color with a different medium. I used chalk (which wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever in the real world) because I liked the way it interacted with the palette knives, but then I ended up doing the whole thing with chalk and when I started messing around with the palette knives it just felt like I was ruining the drawing. Next time I’ll make sure to use the knives as I go since I really do like the look they create.

I don’t know what to expect in the episodes to come, but I’d be pretty happy to just watch the two leads win over the town and rebuild Jung-joo’s house (I’m a big Property Brothers fan so it’s right up my alley!). It seems like there’s going to be more to the story though. Surely the two of them can’t be related, but that makes me wonder if Jung-joo is the actual biological child? Maybe not, but I think something tricksy is definitely going to happen, and a switcheroo could be fun. In the meantime I just want more Jeju. It’s like going to the spa!

Episode 2 is where things started flowing a little better and moving along, but the Hongs need to get a move on and not waste excessive amounts of screen time on gags that wear thin after a very short time (broken cable "snake", anyone?).

I do like Yoo Yeon-seok and Kang Sora as the leads. She really suits the role of high-strung but hardworking Jung-joo, and he also suits the role of a sweet but lazy playboy to a T. And I am really enjoying Kim Sung-oh.

the only real fly in the casting ointment is the second lead, idk how they managed to find an actress who looks like she physically cannot move her face into anything resembling a genuine smile (makes me suspect botox, really). Usually Hong sisters second leads are hateable but at least fun to hate, or entertaining, this one is just there, like a giant bland pudding that no one really wants to order.

@pogo: makes me suspect botox --> LOL!!!! Sooo trueee, I can't decide if the actress just doesn't know what to feel, or what?

Fanderay, there must've been so many beautiful scenes that you want to draw in this drama, isn't it? This one is one of my favorites, with the mountain on the back ground and the nice river between the two...really pretty. Thank you!

After episode 2 I fall in love with this drama.

I like that the second episode is less dramatic like most typical k-drama. Also what a refreshing change - the lead characters of Geun Woo & Jung Joo. And both Yoo Yeon Seok & Kang Sora fit like a T as the lead characters.

Already feels warm & cozy from episode 2, lets hope it gets even better from now on.

Oh I also like the supporting characters - Geun Woo's brother, the Mayor, the lady diver & the waiter.

This is lovely! Thank you for this!

I didn't know what to think about this drama after the first episode, but the second one made me like it. I am still not hooked, and I'm still waiting for everything to connect with me. But I do love the leads and Jeju Island seems to be the perfect setting.

It was surprising that Gun-Woo isn't an awful person, but kind and warm, though a perfect man-child. I love this scene, exactly because of the way you described it.

We're only two episodes in, and I love how we already have a grasp on the characterization of our two leads. I cannot wait to fall in deep love with this drama, but of course, I wouldn't raise my expectations way too high.

In the meantime, I'll enjoy it for what it is. :)

Fanderay, love the scene you chose and I always enjoy your vision on shows! So thanks for that!

@Yui, the first 2 eps of drama were very unlike the Hong sisters. It was of a much calmer pace then we are used to :) ...
I also plan on watching it till the end!

this drama is just warm and warming my heart
I do really like it, although I feel the rush in ep 1
but ep 2 finish the week greatly

simply because they are nice people who don't looked really fall down miserable or higher than anyone,
they meet in high school and quickly establish that they knew each other, all the miss occasion for me in on point, Seuol is not that small to meet just because you happen to be in same place, hahaha
and I love their character, I find a potential cliche rich girl but no bad boy so far, there is the ex and the brother though, I mean as another love interest,
the character feel genuine and it's a happy story with no complicated evil shadow (well maybe, the mom looks has many mystery) at least no one wanted to kill someone or they involved in some crime

It just about two teens to try living on their own

I was quite disappointed at the beginning of the drama becasue it like a tourism variety show.
I wanted to see all the best from YYS since not see him so long from small screen ,however, it seemed like a very old style drama.
After episode 2, it made me felt better and found no one siut for the character Gun-woo but YYS !!!

Yes, fandaray. I liked and identified with your keen observation that this drama was was enacted without the angst of trying to "predict" or anticipate the story. The scenery was "palatte-ble" and the leads "saccharine sweet" - it gave me a relaxing, "warm and Cozy" hour of rom-com entertainment.
This in reflected in the moderated tone in posters' comments and the absence of fangirls' sometimes vitriol reactions and threats that writers "rewrite" the ending.

Hi Fanderay!

This is just a note to ask you how you're doing. I've been missing your drawings and reviews. I left a message for you in the Open Thread #406, and Saya suggested that I'd have better luck reaching you through a post over here.

I just wanted to know if you're busy and what you're watching and what you might be drawing next. I hope you're fine, too. Anyway, take care and I hope to read you and see your art again! :)
