Pyo Ye-jin dreams of becoming Lee Jun-young’s Cinderella

Just when I was thinking the jam-packed May couldn’t possibly squeeze in another premiere, TVING made a sneak drop announcement, kicking off promos for I Openly Dream of Cinderella. Starring Pyo Ye-jin (Moon in the Day) and Lee Jun-young (The Impossible Heir) as our love bound pair, we’re first introduced to the rom-com’s main cast in the newly released script reading stills.

Similar to the well known fairy tale heroine, we meet our leading lady Shin Jae-rim – played by Pyo Ye-jin – when she’s down on her luck, having bumped her head one too many times on the towering obstacles invading her life path. Feeling burnt by everyday life’s endless toiling, Jae-rim decides that the Cinderella route may be her only escape and dreams of finding her own charming prince.

I fear, though, that Jae-rim is barking up the wrong trope. Cinderella and the like may have their arms full with suave princes in the far away kingdoms of fairy tales. However, dramaland’s equivalent chaebols are notoriously prickly and Lee Jun-young playing our story’s Moon Cha-min is a textbook example – classically cold and cynical to boot.

In contrast, Kim Hyun-jin (Cheer Up) plays the gentle and courteous Baek Do-hong, a self-made filmmaker whose success was hard-earned. Also in a second lead role, Song Ji-woo (Doctor Slump) takes on the character Ban Dan-ah, who is described as a potty-mouthed princess.

Production for the series has writer Baek Mi-kyung (Strong Girl Nam-soon) in a creative role, together with PD Kim Min-kyung (Comedy Big League, SNL Korea) directing and scripts by rookie writer Yoo Ja. With a runtime of 10 episodes, TVING’s I Openly Dream of Cinderella will be launching this May.

I wonder if the actors get tired of the tropes as much as viewers do. I mean nothing about this particularly appeals to me but just seeing "cold and cynical" made me involuntarily roll my eyes since I'm fairly certain he's played that type at least 3 times.

I don't know; maybe I'm being to harsh. I mean I certainly prefer a cynic (since I can relate to that) to a sunshine & rainbows type but I'm just wondering if there's anyway to give a new take to things

He has, and honestly I don't think he's particularly great at it. And that's not in any way impugning his talent, it's just that it's hard to play cold and still be likeable. Not everyone can be like Yoon Hyun-min who should always play cold leads because he still manages to be super expressive and likeable, haha.

I like Jun better as oddballs, like May I Help You and Love and Leashes.

I liked those two too! The first thing I ever saw him in was Love & Leashes haha

He does the menacing guy fairly well too haha
Such as in Brave Citizen (and he's gonna be a bully/antagonist in Weak Hero Class 2 )

I loved him both of those, too!

I was hoping that this drama would erase "Impossible Heir" from my memory, but I don't love the FL, and the story seems tired.

Yoon Hyun-min should start taking acting classes and train the young 'uns to play cold + expressive + likeable. A tough ask indeed. 😅😂

For me it is the other way around. A more normal and ordinary premise like this one makes me smile and go ok, we'll see where this goes. Hope they have a nice story and a few good twists.

But a premise like what (and how) was advertised for QoT for example, feels contrived and forced to me. And my reaction is hmm wonder how many episodes they will manage to keep it interesting... The more the premise looks novel the more skeptical I become...

P.s. By no means I mean that ordinary stories are better, or that new ones are bad, this is just my reaction to drama announcements way before they air.

I've always wondered this too, but some actors do want to play in a romcom to change up the genres they're usually in. Some viewers love a good, formulaic, tropey story and I'm sure there are actors who feel the same way.

Does any of this sound original? Not even slightly. Will I watch this? Almost definitely.

I find the busier and more stressful my life is the more I want dramas that feel like a familiar hug. I hope this is that, with just enough surprises to keep it interesting. And I love the leads!

How are they still getting time slots in May?????
It will be good to see Jun in a non crazy role. Not sure if I will have time to love watch it. Nothing about the plot excites me either. Will see when it lands and decide.

Hum.. I don't mind tropes if the actors have great chemistry.

But I don't trust Jun's choices of dramas as a lead. I don't really like Pyo Ye-Jin as a lead actress, I think she shines more in supporting roles.

I don't think I have watched the ML in anything, but so far, I agree about Pyo Ye Jin. I feel she overdoes emotions and somehow does not have the presence to pull a show by herself. But it could be that her last drama choice was terrible, against a male lead who I find quite the dud. She had zero chemistry with him (I only watched one and a half episode so just based on that, though the beanie comments only validated what I felt).

I like both actors but as always Kurama has the most accurate analysis. 👌👏 ♥️

But I'm tempted to at least give this a try and (as always) hope for the best. 🤞 If nothing at least the drama chat will be 💯 guaranteed fun.

Wait, this is different from the one that also has Cinderella in the title where she takes the rich family's money and leaves the dude, right? Or is it the same one? I can't keep track!

"I Openly Dream of Cinderella" is the direct translation of its Korean title "나는 대놓고 신데렐라를 꿈꾼다." "Dreaming of Cinde Fxxxing Rella" is the English title they've decided to go with because swear words are cool and will attract more English viewers. /s

OBY Yi Hwan is copy-book tsundere. So is High Society Yoo Chang Soo. I am sure there are other memorable ones but these two are on top of my head.

Many would call Boys over flower ML tsundere as well though in my books he is just a jerk.

Oh Han Byeol In Shooting Star would work

Yes, Goo Won would be a good example.

Than goodness for Old os Gold dramas. I hear people who are worried about current drama productions- that there aren’t enough good ones coming out. I do not have this problem as there are sooo many older shows to watch.
What are a couple you have recently watched that you loved?

Same here, am not quite sure about such concern of shortage with new productions, or maybe cause I am a-newly fan of kdrama I still have a lot to catch up with! My viewing strategy is such a simple one, either to watch all work for an ML or FL I lied the work OR by genre depending on my mood! Whether it’s an “old is gold “ or “escapism” etc etc, as for recommendations based on latest watched over the past couple of months :
My princess
Secret garden
Prime minister and I
Scent of a woman
Lie to me
Another miss ho
Shopping king Louie
Marriage not dating
Falling for innocence
Kangchi, the beginning
Let’s us know which one you enjoyed watching the most so we set recommendations accordingly 😄

I sure hope there is some big twist to make this tropey story interesting. On paper, I am not really invested in it but I want to try for LJY and PYJ. I didnt stick with either of their previous respective dramas. I will wait for more info, trailers or posters.
