News bites: January 17, 2016

Kim Yuri, Ryu Hwa-young

  • Come Back, Ahjussi, the fantasy life-after-death show starring Rain, Lee Min-jung and Oh Yeon-seo, has also cast Ryu Hwa-young (Ex-Girlfriend Club) as a top star. Come Back, Ahjussi debuts on SBS on February 24. [Joy News 24]
  • The upcoming weekend drama formerly known as Hundred-Day Wife is now being called Marriage Contract and has confirmed Lee Seo-jin and UEE as the leads. Kim Yuri (Beloved Eun-dong) has been brought on to play Lee’s first love and an accomplished flutist. The two fell in love at first sight, but she’ll later reappear as his brother’s fiancée. Kim Kwang-kyu (his bromance with Seojinnie from Three Meals a Day continues!) will play his much older-looking friend (made all the more hilarious because Kim is actually six years older), and the only person he can really bare his soul to. Marriage Contract follows My Daughter Geum Sa-wol in March on MBC. [Sports Chosun, Joongang]
  • Kim Hee-ae (Mrs. Cop) is positively considering the lead in Mystery Shopper, a film about, well, mystery shoppers. The script is currently being modified, and filming will begin as soon as the script and casting are complete. [Osen]

  • Kim Hee-ae, Ha Yeon-soo

  • Your Name is Jang-mi has lined up its cast and is ready to begin filming next month. Up to play young Jang-mi is Ha Yeon-soo (Legendary Witch) in her first leading film role. Jang-mi in her youth will be in a love triangle with Choi Woo-shik and Lee Won-geun, while present-day Jang-mi (Yoo Ho-jung) will continue that complicated romantic status with Park Sung-woong (Remember — Son’s War) and Oh Jung-se (The Lover). [DongA, Osen]
  • It was only a matter of time: Hit tvN drama Misaeng is being remade in China. The cable channel confirmed the rights were sold, and production will begin late this year for a broadcast in 2017. [DongA]
  • Kim Soo-hyun (The Producers) is the face of a new mobile game in China called Kim Soo-hyun’s Star Academy. In the game, players start out as rookie artists and train under a virtual Kim to become stars — and depending on skill, users could even romance the simulated Kim. Android and iOS versions of the app were launched on January 14. [TV Report]
  • I’m excited to see more of Jin Ki-joo, who was adorable in both Twenty Again and Splish Splash Love. She’ll play the lady-in-waiting and close friend of IU in Scarlet Heart: Goryeo, which will be entirely pre-produced and will air in late 2016 on SBS. [TV Report]
  • Cross Pictures (Cheese in the Trap, Dr. Jin) and Naver are teaming up to bring popular webtoon Sound of the Heart to life. Ten episodes of ten minutes each will debut on the web in mid-April, and depending on how well the web drama is received, the “short-com” could be broadcast on TV. [Ten Asia]
  • I have a fond spot in my heart for all Answer Me alums, and I wish Jung Woo and his bride Kim Yumi (Can We Love) nothing but the best — they wed in a simple and closed ceremony on January 16. [Sports Chosun]

Yay for Ryu Hwa-young getting more roles!
I liked her and director better than the main couple in Ex-girlfriend club.

yeah, I was surprised to learn she used to be an idol - she should have cut straight to the chase and gone for acting all along.

There was so much drama when she was an idol too, I'm glad she's able to go into acting now even though it's only a start.

Congratulations to Jung Woo and Kim Yumi - have a happy marriage! (and you'll always be Trash Oppa and Jin-sook to us <3)

Also happy to hear about Ha Yeon-soo's casting, she'll look adorable with Lee Won-geun (Crinkles <333) and Choi Woo-shik. The older trio looks pretty killer too, Yo Ho-jung is fantastic.

Sad Lee Won-geun has only a small role in his upcoming drama.

What happens if the trainee is a male?

Same thing that happens when I play racing games where I get the Hot Chick as a reward: laugh at how fake the character is. ^____^

Lol, it's a virtual "Bachelor" meets "The Voice" à la Korea... With KSH's enlistment just around the corner, these people are just stretching the goose that lays the golden eggs out, beyond repair. That's the bitter truth behind enormous popularity in k-ent. Twenty-one months of absence count as a whole lifetime in terms of projects and, of course, profit.
The upsetting fact, however, is that some (not all) of these mega stars are actors to begin with who, I presume, wish to be more than just celebrities and, to be fair, some of them obviously deserve it, regardless their current status in the industry. However, realistically speaking, I know it's almost impossible for them (plus their agencies) to overcome fandoms, ignore countless CFs and now, ridiculous apps with all the cash flowing.

Jung Woo and Kim Yumi, congrats!!!

Wow, I like the casting of Jin Ki Joo as the lady-in-waiting. She had an amazing relationship with the female lead and stuck by her till the end.

LOL at the Kim Soo Hyun app.

Yeah, I really like Jin Ki Joo as well.

But we all know what happened in the Chinese version!

Do you think they will go that route here??

(If you can answer me in a non-spoiler-y way, tell me your thoughts.)

I'm not sure how the Korean team plans to adapt the story since I am not familiar with Korean history at all, so I don't know if a happy or tragic ending will make more sense to the Korean audience. They seem to have most of the princes covered and some of the female roles in addition to the lead. Maybe it will come down to whether they would follow the original ending as written by the author or the more open-ended ending in the original drama. What I'm looking forward to, and hopefully the cast and crew can deliver, would be the relationships between the different characters in terms of love and friendship, the rivalry coupled with strong acting, and the character development since it spans quite a period of time.

Yeah, I agree, it all really comes down to how they are able to interact with one another and if they all have good chemistry together. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing?

I was waiting for the casting news for a while since I knew about this remake. I love Jisoo, so I'm happy that he's part of the cast. I don't mind Lee Joon Gi and Nam Joo Hyuk either and I like Kang Ha Neul as well. So, the relationships I'm looking forward to would be IU with all the princes (esp. 4th, 8th, 10th, 13th, 14th), IU and Jin Ki Joo, Lee Joon Gi and Kang Ha Neul, Nam Joo Hyuk and Seohyun, Jisoo and all the bromance. LOL

Well, I don't want them to go that route.. The punishment in the Chinese version is too much for me..
Maybe they could be close friend till the end and the punishment is simply by drinking poison or exiled to another island (like Dae Jang Geum).

I'm looking forward to IU's chemistry with the princes, esp Lee Jun Ki and Kang Ha Neul since they'll be the 1st and 2nd leads.

That is a lovely wedding photo. It shows his personality well.

In other news I just read that Yoo Shi Yoon (Baker Kim Takgu/Enrique from Flower Boy Next Door) will be released from the marines this month. It seems like he just left yesterday! I hope to see him in dramaland soon.

Congratulations to the newlyweds! A low-key couple amidst such a flamboyant entertainment industry- I'm sure, that's not the norm. After watching Jung Woo's audition interviews for AM'94, I realised that he's an actor (whom, by the way, I've never seen in anything before that series) with a sort of European polish rather than the trendy Hollywood-ish style in terms of acting in K-ent.
BTW, Trash oppa was a husband material after all, ladies ;-)

I kind of wish Jin Ki-joo would play the lead in K-BBJX, she absolutely charmed me in Splish Splash Love.

I think this girl just debuted last year, she can build her career gradually.

I rather see someone who gradually enhance her skill before get the lead role than someone who just debuted and already get the lead role ;)
