Ji Sung, Park Bo-gum courted for new drama Entertainer

This would be quite the score if they managed to make this casting happen, though it’s in very early stages and not at all confirmed: Ji Sung (Kill Me, Heal Me) and Park Bo-gum (Answer Me 1988) have been offered leading roles in a new drama titled Entertainer, which is in scheduling talks with SBS.

So far, we have only the barest description of the plot, which is that it’s about the assembling of a ragtag band (as in, musical group). The character Ji Sung is up for was once a manager at an agency handling the nation’s top singers, and is now the CEO of an agency repping the most pathetic rookies. Through various struggles and incidents, he’ll learn to become “a genuine manager,” which I suppose means someone who cares and is good at his job?

The character Park Bo-gum is looking at has not been described, though I have to presume he’s one of the band members. I’m already picturing the possibilities of this casting, and I can easily see both actors in these parts, giving their characters tons of personality, charm, quirks, and even flaws. The title itself is an interesting choice, since the word used for “entertainer” (ddanddara) carries a negative connotation — it’s kind of an old-fashioned word, disdaining entertainers as a cheap, vulgar profession. The word isn’t used much anymore (probably because being a celebrity is so desired now) but when it is employed, the negative association remains.

Scriptwriter Yoo Young-ah has several credits to her name; she wrote dramas Pretty Man and Birdie Buddy, both manhwa adaptations, and has adaptation credit on the sageuk film Royal Tailor as well as screenwriting credit on the just-released romantic comedy movie Like Me (or Like for Likes) starring Choi Ji-woo, Yoo Ah-in, Lee Mi-yeon, Kang Haneul, and Kim Joo-hyuk.

Entertainer hopes to score a slot on SBS’s spring schedule (it’s looking at April). I’m sure that if Ji Sung and Park Bo-gum sign on (both sides have stated they’re considering the drama as one of many possible projects), we’ll see the show put on the fast-track to production. But that’s still an if at the moment.

Lol ?? i love your pun. So good! ---- I've always thought Park Bo Gum looked like a mix between Lee Hyun Woo and Hong JongHyun. --- I'm excited for his next project (as well as all those in the 1988 series). There's no doubt he'll be great in whatever roll he takes (that boy is full of acting chops), I just hope the drama will not disappoint(please!please!please!)! I've honestly never seen any of Ji Sung's previous works (unless u count running man--in which he was great and likeable in) although I've heard great things about him as an actor (in dramabeans no less--and in my mind if dramabeans says he's great, then he IS great).

The screen writer has some pretty awful projects under his/her name. Pretty Man? Royal Tailor? Birds Buddy? Barf on all of 'em.

The story somewhat reminds me of Dream High though and if they cast a bunch of idols (with PBG being the only legit actor) then that will solidify the resemblance. But not the other hand, DH is my favourite high school drama to have come out from k-ent. The journey of every character was epic and goosebumps inducing and really something worth rooting for. If they can capture even half of the triumph and underdog story that DH did, I think I could get behind this.

I hope to god they get a better cast than Dream High, though - that was such a great story but the idols (barring Eunjung) brought the drama itself down one level from actual greatness.

That said, this writer's previous works inspire absolutely no confidence, both actors are probably better off staying out of this.

I thought IU and Wooyoung were good actually. They were beyond cute and did what needed to be done. It's also Suzy's best work IMO. But that's mostly because they literally incorporated her bad acting into the role making it endearing rather than annoying (at least to most anyway). Taeyeon... yea no comments even if he's adorkable in real life lol. But in general, the drama was fantastic and a cut above almost all high school dramas to come out from SKorea.

Though really, that is ALL credit to Park Hye Ryun and her awesomeness. This drama doesn't have her and who they do have is... someone not worth the good actors that they are courting. So I'd rather they cast idol actors and have the real actors work with better writers. Guess that makes me heartless? Lol.

re: the idols, I thought IU was adequate - but I certainly wouldn't say the same of Suzy, Taecyeon or Wooyoung (all of whom made me wonder, at various points in the drama, just how drunk the casting director was, to think they were ok to act - this was before I knew they were basically shoo-ins thanks to their agency). Five years later, the difference in the standard of their latest performances says it all.

Park Hye-ryun made a superhuman effort to rewrite Suzy's role so it wouldn't demand much beyond her (extremely limited) abilities, but even that was a struggle, and it was frequently visible. I wouldn't wish that on any writer.

Though if this drama is bound to be crap, they should probably give some rookie actors (not idols) a shot at it. They could use the exposure from a prime-time drama, and may actually be less likely to much up the job - or at least they'll cause less cringing, anyway.

Can't agree with you there tbh. DH could've undoubtedly been better with better actors but it was fantastic despite being crippled by some and that's a feat I absolutely refuse to take away from the drama. The fact that it managed to be that amazing even if everything was truly against it right from the start... that itself makes me forgive most of its flaw. Also the fact that high school dramas with a much better ensemble cast like SGG or School 2015 etc etc etc only managed to be 'cute', have useless love triangles and pointless resolutions instead of bring about a concrete message, inspiring goals and kids dreaming the impossible.

But yes, not every writer is Park Hye-ryun and this person certainly ain't. So she'll surely need actors who can actually do the job for this to succeed.

As for casting rookie actors, I agree there. Although really, it sounds like an idol drama from the synopsis so I'm not sure what they're looking for exactly. On the contrary though, they are courting actors who can act so I'm probably wrong in my assumptions. We'll see what eventually develops.

I actually thought Sassy Go Go had the message (academic pressure and parental expectations suck, but friendship can save you), but because that was rather more down-to earth than DH's 'go for your dreams', it tends to get overlooked and dismissed as nothing but cute fluff.

It's also one of the few dramas I've seen where the love triangle and its resolution actually made sense because, rather unusually, it hinged on the friendship between the two boys. Bonus points for not beating us over the head with super-obvious saving-girl-from-gangsters etc scenes from the get-go, we didn't even get a hint that those two particular boys would be the ones in the love triangle until the second half of the drama - that's quite a contrast to how kdramas usually set things up.

As for School 2015.... well, at least it got people to realise that Kim So-hyun is leading lady material at all of 15 years old? That one just shot itself in the foot.

and returning to the subject of this present drama, you're right that they have courted talented actors - maybe it's a bit too ambitious of them considering the writer's previous work. But I'm sceptical enough to believe they're being courted for fame reasons more than talent ones (though they are both fantastic actors), and that that will carry through to whoever gets offered this drama after they reject.

(and if it really has to be an idol, please god, no Hongbins! At least pick ones who CAN act, not ones who stand around looking like they're thinking about camera angles and poses instead of, you know, being the character)

SGG was fun in its run but to me, nothing special. I enjoyed the story of a girl who had expectations push her down almost to the point of no return. Speaking of which, I personally loved School 2015's story about the guy who was first in class but considered suicide because of his crazy mother. That one really got me in the heart. But yea anyway other than Soo-ah's story (which got resolved so poorly, omg) everything else was cliche and expected without being exhilarating. I didn't root for anyone in earnest unlike DH where every character had their own individual triumph carved into the idea of winning as a group.

As for the love triangle, it was ridiculous and unnecessary imo. Ha-joon could've easily liked Yeon-doo just as a bestie and they could've been an awesome threesome inspiring and urging one another. Being in love with her brought absolutely nothing to the story other than emphasize the stupid girls-and-guys-can't-just-be-friends rule. Hated that love triangle although at least they didn't ruin the friendship in the end. If they did, SGG would've gone down my crap list of dramas.

This drama: you have a good point. It could really just be the popularity being courted. But we can also see it as IF they manage to secure these two actors, then they'll most likely not need a lot of idol ones because the popularity aspect is check marked? Or I guess not. Productions are greedy so they'll probably go for the Seolhyuns, Ls and Ns just to get fangirls to tune in. Hongbin can't even smile a true smile on camera, he's so bad, it's embarrassing. Although really, no one's worse than L. Like... No. One. And when his kyaaaagirls argue otherwise, it makes me barf.

0

(the story of Min-ki, who nearly committed suicide because he was under so much strain to be first in class, was from School 2013 btw. Not 2015!)

I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree about SGG – it simply didn't follow a triumphalist kind of trajectory at all, and that was never the point of that story– it's not really about underdogs and winning, more about how the system is toxic to everyone and has to be coped with (which makes for a much less rah-rah message than most kdramas give us). But pressure over school and differential treatment over family backgrounds and grades are issues that real-life high school students do face – I saw it in my own high school days, and by the sound of it, things haven't changed. fwiw I had no trouble with Soo-ah's resolution either, because the drama made it very clear that the kids' forgiveness of her was as much for themselves as for her and that even after her almost-suicide attempt, it wasn't a get-out-of-jail-free card – she still had to take her punishments, do all the crappy tasks she used to get out of earlier, and take a zero on her cheated midterms to start earning their trust back.

As for the love triangle, I didn't want it at first either but it worked, oddly enough . It's not as if the drama negated the idea that boys and girls can be friends – you had Dong-jae and Yeon-doo being BFFs (to the point where Yeol is jealous) but never showing any inkling of even registering each other THAT way. And the love triangle did serve a purpose, though it was mainly to underscore the boys' friendship and how much it meant to them. I actually liked the way it was handled – no one played noble idiot over it (Yeol thought Ha-joon was, but he was mistaken in thinking it was about Yeon-doo), no one unilaterally broke up with anyone else or pulled back from mutually-known crushes over it (Answer Me 1988, I'm looking at you), and it managed to both be respectful of Yeon-doo's feelings AND not leave anyone keeping secrets to fester (the gummy bear confession). It's actually a really healthily written triangle, we're just so used to heartbroken mopey second leads that it takes some time getting used to one that's actually handled like an unrequited crush NOT being the end of his world.

As for this drama..... you're right that if these two actors take up the roles they've been offered, there won't be any need for idols – Ji-sung and Park Bo-gum are way more popular anyway. The real worry is about who they'll go to after a rejection. No one needs any more of Hongbin's acting in this world..... or whatever passes for 'acting' with him, anyway. I actually can't tell whether that degree of suckage is all him, or if the seeming surgical tweaks contributed to it – whatever the result is, he looks like a very surprised fish.

Dream High <3<3

Its funny that despite all the success it had like high ratings, great popularity for leads, cult fandom etc, HS kdramas still choose to focus on bullying and petty love triangle crap. DH was all about chasing your dreams against all odds. It was such an inspirational and uplifting show and it sucks that nothing even similar came out since. Even the love triangle was so believable and it did not feel like the writer was just hanging a carrot and then pulling it back like the Reply series likes to do. I have such fond memories of that show.

Ok back to topic, I like PBG and love JS and I want them to do this in the hopes that the screenplay will pull through and we can get a show similar to DH. Its far fetched but I am willing to take risks LOL.

Lol don't wanna make this a Dream High gush tread but that drama was truly amazing and like you said, one of a kind. It's special and if this writer can capture that kind of theme, then I'm down.

But... Royal Tailor is a hot mess. I'm also not sure how I got through even half of Pretty Man - that's amongst the worst dramas I've ever seen. At times it even gave me a headache with JGS's cocky frustrating character and IU's nasty fangirl antics. So yea, if JS and PBG accepts, then there's no choice but to hope it'll be watchable.

I don't see them re-created a success case like dream High because it was once a life time think and just look at what happened to Dream High 2..

It was the destiny of many up an coming actor and idols crossing paths in what came to be an epic musical drama.

And not to say the atleast both Suzy and IU has ethblished themselves as leading actresses thanks to that Drama and KSH well that dosen't even need any comments how much that show has done for him.. Such Nostalgia's shouldn't be copied or remade or even making second parts of. My advice is just leave it as it is

Yep. DH was one of those out-of-nowhere-amazing kinds that's really rare and special. Not every drama can bring in that kind of inspiring and heart warming message and in fact - no drama has since.

And I'm clearly not saying it should be copied. I'm just saying I'd like for this drama to try and bring a similar message/feel across. This isn't even a High School drama but I'd like for them to take inspiration from DH and make this into something amazing - or even just good. I'm not greedy.

Also, another reason I'm not so hyped about this happening is because I'm waiting.... and waiting.... and WAITING for something else to happen, that is: a reunion drama with EUGENE AND JISUNG <3 <3 <3
Seriously... I need that Eugene & Ji Sung reunion..... it's been more than 10 years....
We had a whole slew of reunion dramas just not too long ago via "Temptation" with CJW & KSW; "Fated To Love You" with JH & JNR; "Hotel King" with LDW & LDH-- wow I just realized all these reunion dramas were all in the same year:2014... time flies!!-- So can't we just add another reunion drama onto that roster, just ONE MORE??? PLEASE?? PLEASE?? PLEASE???

I am with you on this one! I desperately wish for a reunion between Ji Sung and Eugene! They were so good in STLDFM! T____T I loved their chemistry! Eugene just finished up her weekend drama, so she's free! Although...I feel like she won't be doing any dramas soon because her family has just been casted on TROS (The Return of Superman), AND she'll probably want to spend some time with her adorable daughter. She did just jump into a drama just a few months after her daughter was born, so I feel like she'll make up for time lost by spending more time with her daughter after the weekend drama. I'm guessing the chances of a Eugene and Ji Sung relationship is slim to none. So sad...still crossing my fingers though. ONE DAY! :(

I'm not saying he should do supporting roles because he sucks in acting. He's fine in that regard. Their skill is the level wwhere they could do a movie like Oldboy and totally carry it. where all the attention is on you alone. it would be difficult for any rookies.
