Soo-hyun confirmed for Idris Elba movie The Dark Tower

While many Korean actors have been heading to China to expand their careers, Soo-hyun (Monster) has been making a name for herself in Hollywood. She played brilliant geneticist Dr. Helen Cho in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and she has just been confirmed for a role in Idris Elba‘s (The Jungle Book, Pacific Rim) upcoming film, The Dark Tower. It’ll be a reunion project for them, as Elba was also in the second Avengers movie, although they didn’t have any scenes together.
Based on a Stephen King novel saga by the same name, Soo-hyun’s new movie The Dark Tower is a mishmash of fantasy and horror, with elements of a Western thrown in.
It’s about a gunslinging knight, played by Elba, who embarks on a quest to a magical tower in order to save his world. On his journey, he’s plagued by an evil sorcerer known as The Dark Man, who will be played by Matthew McConaughey (Free State of Jones, Dallas Buyers Club).
Soo-hyun has been cast as Arra Champignon, who is the wife of another fellow gunslinging knight. Her character is described as “kind” and “caring for others.” In the original source material, she suffers a brutal attack. However, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that this movie project will be more of a reinterpretation rather than a straight adaptation, so hopefully they won’t go all Red Wedding on Soo-hyun.
Dark Tower is tentatively scheduled for release in theaters on February 17, 2017.

Hahaha. I just saw the date of February 17 and was worried that we've been transported to Stephen King's dystopic West. I think you meant 2017 dear, and a huge congrats to Soo Hyun. If the movies follows the book as best they can, it will be epic

I love seeing Korean actors getting time on the silver screen. There are plenty of excellent Korean actors that deserve to hit it big in Hollywood.
I am currently watching Sense8 that stars Bae Doo-Na and I love it. She is an excellent actress and I'm glad a larger international audience gets to continually experience her talent.

Have you seen season 2 av Marco Polo? She has a very prominent role in this season. She was in almost every ep. Only Marco, Kubla, Ahmed had more scenes.
She plays huge historical mongol warrior who was the only Female general who lead,advised her father in part of the mongol empire.

I wasn't going to comment because the "foaming" is a bit much for me. But I just have to support being able to say what you said. That may not be how I would phrase it.
But blacks and food is a must change horrible thing out of the many struggles we face? For real? Is that because chocolate is the most obvious or the most used? Phrases like "tall drink of water" for men of all races, "I just want to gobble you up" for babies are okay, but not acknowledging a beautiful man as dazzling?
Is that just because it's not describing Ed Sheeran as a "beautiful strawberry" or Song Joong Ki as "pure and cool as milk" or Tom Hiddleston as "a blessed almond joy"? Very sorry if I'm offending anyone. I don't often compare people to food. I'm just confused why it's bad in the black community and giving examples.
Are black people compared to any food besides chocolate? Because I can say in my 20 years, I haven't heard another.
However, while we may all accept it and use it to maintain our self-esteem, it seems to have bothered you for years. I am truly sorry you were offended. Just remember: no one member of the victimized party can speak for the rest. And when online, yoy have no way of knowing if a member of victimized group is the one saying it.
That aside, I am forever in love with Idris Elba even though he's old enough to be my dad and my black/African male attracted ratio is low.

As a Black Southern Woman I am not offended by Black people being likened to foods. To answer your question about other foods we are liked to: coffee with or without cream (Café au lait), caramel, cocoa, brown sugar. Writers uses these comparisons a lot, because with visual media most of the time you don't have to describe a person's skin you can just show it. Everyone has a right to their opinion on whether or not to be offended or feel fetishtisized. But it does help to try to look at the motive of the writer. I don't think you intended to offend.

Lol, yes. I talked to my oppa who gave me nothing. But my eonnie and I had a more in depth conversation about it, make up style. Caramel, toffee. But lighter skin make up is more like porcelain, tan, snow.
She told me there is one called vanilla. That's it just one.
Yeah, from a writing point of view, you have to relate the skin tone in ways that connect. I wonder why black people are the only food ones though.
I don't get the fetishizing aspect. The politest phrase can become a fetish. But I do get the offensive possibility. I think my least favorite light-skin black comparison is the "they'd pass the paper bag test" - like wait, what? That's based on a difficult period of time in black history.
So it goes both ways I guess.

are these roles race-specific? i hope soohyun's role isn't just the typical Asian female in Hollywood, where she's there to gain international viewers and look pretty. it pained me to see that Chinese actress in Skyfall.

No, none of the characters are race-specific: in the books, both Soo-Hyun's and Idris Elba's characters were white.
However, I'm not sure if the production team will sidestep the "demure Asian woman" trope, since Arra Champignon (Soo-Hyun's character) was pretty gentle, unfailingly polite, and kind of damsel-y. Maybe they'll update the character so that she's a bit more badass?

To suggest that a female character will be better if she was a bit more "badass" irks me so much. A quiet and demure woman can be strong in her own way. Also, many of the female Asian actresses I see on TV are often typecasted as the complete opposite--emotionless women who have no lines and only fight and wield swords. In this case, I think this is going in the right direction of adding diversity to the roles Asian women can play.

@Dee-Oh didn't say the character would be better. They said "update the character". I think they meant in taking the character from the years the book was written, around the 1980s, to our modern-day. But I'm not sure what time period the books are or the movie will be and if that would work.

I still remember her from Brain. I really liked her in that.
But, I'm glad she seems to be having success over here in the US. She never really got much love in SK, it seems, and unfortunately shared a name with a certain Hallyu star.

A black man as a hero and a white man as the villain (The "Dark Man" to be even more precise)?! GASP. Isn't this a lovely and unexpected subversion to the "black = evil villain" and "white = saviour/hero" trope. Goodness knows we can do with less of these damaging racist tropes.
And glad Soo-Hyun is cast in this too - hopefully her role is also meaty, strong, and subversive.

I just found out who Idris Elba this year, after coming across episodes of "Luther" on tv. An excellent actor in an outstanding show, by the way.

Idris Elba is indeed a phenomenal actor. His film Beasts Of No Nation received a high recognition and, despite Oscar Awards' boycott, his very handsome presence highlighted both BAFTA and European Film Awards. And what can one say about Luther? Absolutely loved it, even the very last episode!
I'm a little sad he wasn't able to break the racial barrier and become the first black James Bond but it's true that the final choice consoled me... a lot!!

She mentioned in a interview that she auditioned for a part that went to a Caucasian actress, there's several options for that so my guess in Ghost in the shell (Kusanagi Makoto- the very asian Scarlett Johansson, I have a lot of not good opinions about the film. Kikuchi Rinko should have been cast), Battle Angel Alita or Netflix upcoming Iron Fist where one character is supposed to be half Japanese.
But good for her, I remember spotting her in Avengers and I was yay. Her character is supposed to have a genius son who becomes a superhero to.
