Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 14

The moon takes on added symbolism today, offering a sliver of hope to cling to in the midst of unease, reminding us that there are things to look forward to, and faith to keep alive. It’s a hope that comes at a welcome time, because things are about to get a whole lotta serious up in this joint. Is everyone bracing themselves?

EPISODE 14: “Foggy road”

With the palace on high alert for an eighteen-year-old female spy named Hong Ra-on, all exits are monitored closely and young women pulled aside for closer inspection. Dressed in men’s clothing, Ra-on nervously approaches the inspecting guard for her turn.

Just then, Yoon-sung announces himself and declares that Ra-on is with him. His status shields them from further inquiry, and they are let through the line.

After receiving the huge shock that the supposed rebel spy is named Hong Ra-on, Yeong goes to Ra-on’s quarters, but only finds her eunuch’s uniform and eternity bracelet left behind.

The next morning, he’s stone-faced as he is dressed by Eunuch Jang, mentally replaying an earlier conversation with Byung-yeon, who had reported that no trace of Ra-on had been found. At Yeong’s question over whether he’d had any inkling before her disappearance, Byung-yeon had answered no.

At court, Yeong takes the younger Minister Kim (the minister of taxation) to task for several systemic abuses of the military taxation system. (Registering the names of babies or dead people, for instance, has forced peasants to pay unfair extra taxes.) He demands that every bit of unfairly collected tax be repaid to the people, but at that, Minister Jo cautions that it would put a strain on the nation’s economy. The elder Minister Kim adds that collecting fewer taxes will thrust the government into a dangerous situation.

Yeong notes sharply that everyone’s quite concerned for the state of the government. Given the pressing dangers, he declares the need for strict measures, and announces that he will cut the salaries of the ranking officials in the Six Ministries and the military administration.

This causes grumbling from the ministers, who ask the prince to reconsider. He snaps that the peasants have been forced to pay unfair taxes due to the corruption of the government. He asks in disgust, “How can you aristocrats, who call yourselves the roots of this nation, whine over this much? And you think you have a right to take a salary from the country?”

He gets no talkback this time.

Eunuch Jang staggers into the eunuch department, where Do Ki and Sung-yeol sympathize with his tiredness, noting that the prince has been quite icy lately. Eunuch Jung sighs that his hurt feelings are fine, but he worries over the prince’s health, given how he’s staying up all night working.

They wonder what happened to Eunuch Hong, but nobody has a clue. Eunuch Jang sighs that he misses Ra-on.

Young Master Jung informs Yeong that investigating the dead assassins has revealed no ties to the rebel group Baekwoonhwe. Yeong suggests that they are merely lying low until the situation quiets, and Young Master Jung concedes that as a possibility. However, he has found one peculiarity: Gold originating from Minister Kim ended up in the hands of one of the assassin’s brothers.

They’re interrupted by a visit from an investigator of the royal tribunal, who explains that a suspect has been caught: She’s not quite twenty years old, and has a possible link to Baekwoonhwe. Yeong tenses.

He heads to the prison immediately, making his way cautiously past the cells, pausing at the sight of a woman’s profile. Ra-on? He approaches with trepidation, breath caught in his throat.

But it’s an unfamiliar woman, and as Yeong sees her face clearly, he relaxes and breathes.

Ra-on is safe for the moment, tucked away in a hut watching her mother embroider an egret flower. She recalls Head Eunuch Han having a handkerchief with the same flower on it, belonging to his old friend, whom she now knows was her father. She also recalls the flower’s meaning: Even in my dreams, I long for you.

Mom takes her hand and asks if she’s having a tough time of it, and Ra-on does her best to smile and say no. She asks how her parents met, and Mom reminisces on growing up in the same village where she had other suitors who gave her flowers and accessories. Ra-on’s father was different; he gave her barley and corn, or sometimes mountain greens. Mom says she figured she wouldn’t starve, and was the one to propose that they marry.

Ra-on sighs that her father lacked romance. Mom just says that he had a field to farm and food to eat and shelter to sleep in: “That was all that your father wanted.”

Head Eunuch Han confirms with Byung-yeon that Ra-on disappeared before he was able to collect her. The eunuch finds the timing suspect, but Byung-yeon says she probably went into hiding in response to the heightened security. Eunuch Han catches on to the discrepancy, because Byung-yeon had previously said that she knew nothing of her connection to the rebellion or Baekwoonhwe. Ack!

Byung-yeon covers up the slip by saying that Ra-on didn’t know it then. The eunuch reminds him that even if Ra-on discovered the truth about herself, the safest place for her would be with the rebels in Baekwoonhwe.

Yeong calls for Yoon-sung, who starts by asking how Yeong is doing. Yeong asks, “Are you worrying about me? The woman you love enough to declare war [against me] has disappeared. Why are you not curious about it?” He points out that Yoon-sung could ask whether Ra-on left any messages, or said where she was going.

Yoon-sung replies that even if he knew anything, they aren’t in a position to share information. Thus he is merely refraining from asking, he says.

Yeong looks a little bitter as he says, “Not me. Even if it is useless, I want to ask. If you know anything, whatever it is.”

Yoon-sung apologizes for being unable to help him. Yeong understands that to mean that Yoon-sung wouldn’t tell him whether he knew anything or not, and Yooon-sung confirms it.

Yeong leaves wearing a dark expression, and walks right past Ha-yeon, who bows in greeting. He only stops when she calls out to him, and she says wistfully that she’s envious—it would be nice if she could walk past him and not notice, and even better if she could see him and pretend she didn’t.

She notes his downcast expression, and he points out the same for her, wondering why she’d look sad when she’d said they were only making a deal. Ha-yeon hastens to explain that even so, it’s a deal that may last her whole life, so there’s no harm in trying to be friendly.

“So what I mean to say,” she tells him, “is to not walk so weakly. And do not look as though you have lost everything in the world. The person you love will likely have said this, if she saw your face now.”

That night, Yeong looks up at the full moon, while from her hideout, Ra-on stares up at the same thing. She thinks back to a time when she’d sat with Yeong at the palace, looking up at the night sky together.

Ra-on comments, “Ah, so that’s what the moon looks like from the palace.” He scoffs that the moon is the same, not seeing any difference.

Ra-on explains that when she was young and traveling with her performance troupe, she’d thought that the moon looked different in every region—full in one area, crescent-shaped in another. He asks if she’d moved that often, and she says yes.

Laughing at her childhood foible, she asks if Yeong has ever entertained totally wrong ideas, to which he says no and clucks his tongue over how she could have thought something so dumb. Ra-on makes a face at him, and he pulls her toward him and assures her it was a joke.

Yeong explains that this is the first time he’s sharing this: “I was even more foolish than you. When I was a child, I thought this palace was the whole world. The highest, most valuable, narrowest well in Joseon—that is the palace I grew up in.”

Ra-on teases that she’s better off, because the water she played in may have been lowly and unimportant, but it was big.

Yeong takes her hand and asks, “Ra-on-ah. Whether we’re seeing it from the palace or from Banchon, is not the moon just the moon? I’m the prince, and whoever you are—wherever and whenever, if only our hearts are the same, that is enough. Like that moon.”

He pats his shoulder, and Ra-on rests her head on it.

Now in the present, the memory brings tears to Ra-on’s eyes.

The queen goes into labor, and aw yeah, it is time to get down to business. The king paces anxiously, noting that it’s a month premature. The royal doctors and nurses are not alerted right away, and by the time they arrive to attend to the queen, they’re turned away by her court ladies, who inform them that the queen has already given birth and does not need their care.

The child is born, and as feared, it’s a girl. The queen refuses to look at her baby’s face and orders her taken away, while the hidden court lady’s baby boy is swapped in her place. For what it’s worth, the queen does look torn up about it—just not, you know, torn up enough to not do the evil thing.

The Kims crow to themselves about the birth of a prince, and Dumb and Dumber get ahead of themselves envisioning installing the baby as the new crown prince. Prime Minister Kim warns them to watch their mouths since they’re essentially threatening the current crown prince with that talk. But Minister Dumb is happy to have a reason to rejoice; he’d been worried about Minister Jo’s daughter being married to the crown prince and bolstering the opposition’s position. Now, all they need is to take care of Yeong and their power is secure again.

Prime Minister Kim cautions them not to be hasty, but they look pretty smug.

The baby princess is given to Eunuch Sung, who smuggles her outside in a wheelbarrow and hands her off to another underling. When the baby starts to cry, they frantically try to muffle the noise, and the other man hurries away with her.

Annnnd around the corner, Yoon-sung watches the whole exchange. Muahaha.

Now it’s Princess Myeongeun’s turn to go skulking around the palace looking for her sweetheart, and she times her walk to bring her into Young Master Jung’s path. She keeps up an air of hauteur to his face, but smiles giddily to herself when he calls out to her. She invites him to accompany her on her walk, and he happily follows.

Sitting in a pavilion together, Myeongeun says that she liked Young Master Jung’s rudeness, which she found refreshing, and suggests that they speak familiarly when alone. “Deok-ho-ya,” she tries out.

But he says he can’t do the same, which makes her smile fade. Then he stretches out an arm around her shoulders like the most comfortable player in the world and says, “Because I don’t know your name.” She tells him her name, and he pulls her close as he tests it out.

Myeongeun closes her eyes, and Young Master Jung puckers up and goes in for the kiss… only to have the princess slap him at the last second. She exclaims nervously that it’s too fast, and he stammers an apology.

The king informs Yeong of the new prince’s birth, and understands that in his position, the news cannot be wholly welcome. Yeong replies that the prince is his brother and assures his father not to worry.

When Minister Kim drops by the queen’s palace, he comments to Eunuch Sung about how Yeong must be feeling upset in light of the birth. Eunuch Sung adds that he must feel especially sad because his close eunuch recently disappeared.

That’s news to the minister, and Eunuch Sung fills him in on how Eunuch Hong disappeared the day the palace was searched for the spy. The eunuch shakes his head over Ra-on’s troublemaking ways, and how (s)he even had woman’s clothing found in his (her) things; it almost caused trouble with the queen until the prince intervened.

Minister Kim files this away, finding it all very interesting. So when he crosses paths with Yeong later, he makes it a point to express his sympathy for Yeong’s troubles, and how it must feel to lose a valued eunuch.

But he won’t get the better of Yeong today, who comments on an interesting fact he’s discovered, too: that in the course of investigating the recently captured assassin, he found that Minister Kim’s own gold had made its way to the assassin’s family.

Minister Kim gets a little nervous, and Yeong demands to know what reason he would have to pay such a large sum to an assassin who attacked the crown prince.

Dumb and Dumber sweat as they discuss this complication, only now aware of the numbers engraved on each piece of gold that point to them. Now they need to come up with an explanation for the money exchange in a way that doesn’t implicate them for treason.

Nervously, Minister Dumb pre-emptively apologizes to the prime minister when he enters, but the prime minister cuts him off with the simple warning not to start anything if he’s going to end up sorry about it. If only they ever listened.

Yoon-sung drops by Ra-on’s hideaway, and the two sit underneath the stars looking up at the full moon. Yoon-sung pulls out a pair of binoculars and offers it to her, to see the moon up close.

Ra-on takes the binoculars and looks up at the moon, which reminds her of Yeong’s words about the moon being the same wherever you look at it—and that regardless of who they are, all they need to have is a constant heart.

The memory makes her emotional, and Yoon-sung moves away the binoculars to see her tearful expression. She recovers her composure, and Yoon-sung says that she must miss somebody far away. Ra-on says no, that she was just staring because it was so strange to see the moon appear so large.

That night, a mysterious man wearing a black bamboo hat is let in to see the prime minister. Hmm.

Trust that it takes the prime minister to put the pieces together and deduce that the runaway Eunuch Hong is the very same lost daughter they’ve been searching for. Minister Dumb now remembers Yeong’s ashen face when he’d heard the spy’s name, though he supposes that Ra-on is long gone and out of reach by now. The prime minister, on the other hand, merely says that if she’s run away, they’ll have to catch her.

Yeong warns the prime minister that Minister Dumb will have to answer for his gold. In response, the prime minister says that the gold was reward for information—that the hidden spy, Hong Ra-on, was involved in the attack on the prince.

Caught by surprise, Yeong asks what proof he has, and the prime minister replies that the girl is proof enough. “Do not worry,” the prime minister says. “Even if I have to cut off that girl’s arms and legs, I will bring her before you.”

At Yeong’s silence, he asks, “Can it be that you already knew?”

Yeong works late into the night, mind preoccupied with doubts and worries. He thinks of the assassin’s claims that a spy inside the palace helped them, and pictures Ra-on being part of the plot all along. He shakes off the thought, telling himself it’s impossible, but lacks conviction.

The bride selection is held, and Ha-yeon is among the finalists brought before the king and queen for interviews. Asked what kind of princess she would be, Ha-yeon replies, “I will love, and love, and love some more.” She explains that her heart of love will enable patience and sacrifice as well, and hilariously, the queen nearly rolls her eyes at the earnest answer.

But the king approves, and before we know it, Ha-yeon is brought to the palace to be trained for her position leading up to the wedding.

Ra-on’s mother collects clothing to wash and assures Ra-on that it’s good to earn money while there’s work to be had. Then she hesitantly broaches the topic of the princess selection, gently letting Ra-on know that the bride has been chosen and the wedding is on the horizon.

Ra-on struggles to contain her reaction, then hurries off with an excuse while holding back tears.

Yeong reads in his private garden, and looks up at someone’s approach. He imagines it’s Ra-on there, looking as she did that first time she came to him in woman’s clothing, and jumps to his feet anxiously… and then deflates to realize it’s Ha-yeon.

Ha-yeon tells him of her selection, which he’s already been informed of, and promises to do her best to help him. His face stony, he tells her, “It’s only a deal. There is no need for that.”

She’s disappointed by the response but says that him taking the throne will be good for her family. Yeong says that he will do his best in his duty and in upholding the deal, but asks for a promise: “Do not enter this place again.”

He leaves abruptly, and Ha-yeon is crushed.

Yoon-sung finds Ra-on looking heartbroken, but she turns him away, saying that it’s too painful for her to see him, because it makes her want to ask after Yeong: “I must forget, I must not know, but I keep wanting to know. Whether he’s eating, whether he sleeps well, whether he’s healthy. You are so good to me that I hate myself for wanting to ask you these things. So please do not come.”

Yoon-sung tells her that it’s okay, that he thinks mean things to himself, and holds onto the thought that when all this is over, she might come to him. He encourages her to cry, telling her he won’t expect anything of her or mistake the situation.

At that, Ra-on breaks down into the sobs she’s been repressing all this while. She chokes out, “I meant not to cry… my heart hurts so much.” Yoon-sung reaches out a hand to console her, but ends up keeping it to himself.

As Yeong sits at his desk, he takes out Ra-on’s eternity bracelet, thinking back to the promise he asked of her—to not let go of him, even in the toughest of times. He also remembers her last day, when she’d kissed him in his sleep.

He sets down her bracelet and starts to remove his own, but he breaks down in tears before he can manage it.

Ra-on receives a visit from a messenger carrying a letter from Head Eunuch Han, which she takes with some trepidation. It says that he hadn’t told her everything about her father, and requests a meeting.

That night, Ra-on waits in an appointed spot. But when she turns at the sound of an arrival, her face freezes. Uh-oh. It’s not who she’s expecting.

At the same time, the prime minister explains to Minister Dumb that although he knows where Ra-on is, his goal isn’t to merely capture her, but to use her in a bigger game. Namely, to bring down the crown prince: “If it becomes known that the prince secretly communicated with the traitor’s daughter outside of the palace, what do you suppose will happen?”

We return to Ra-on—and it’s Yeong standing there before her, looking thunderous. Yesss. Or no? Yessss.

What they don’t know is that a small army has made its way to their meeting point, presumably directed by the prime minister. Oh no. This looks bad. This looks very, very bad.

The soldiers gather outside their building, and start to charge in…

Inside, Yeong regards Ra-on with the coldest eyes and vows firmly, “I will never forgive you.” Stricken, Ra-on can only stare as he advances toward her, his face grim with determination…

But he just swoops in and envelops her in an embrace.

Ra-on’s eyes overflow with tears as Yeong holds her close, his hand still wearing his bracelet, and his face softens a bit.

Ra-on reaches her hand up tentatively, and grabs a handful of his clothing tightly. He registers that touch, and holds her even more tightly.

COMMENTS

Yay, he didn’t give up faith, but also, oh my god runnnnnnn! It’s a trap! This is all about to come down on your heads in a very bad way!

Because, barring a last-minute miracle (which I won’t give up on; it’s unlikely, but still something to console me through the week), it looks like these two have fallen prey to the prime minister’s machinations. Just as Ra-on’s flight cast her in a guilty light (in addition to the false testimony that nobody is in a position to contradict), being caught together here not only bodes ill for Ra-on, it casts doubt onto the prince, too. If he’s consorting with the enemy, then he needs to come up with a really convincing explanation in order to escape being painted as in cahoots with traitors. Of course it’s absurd for him to have planned his own assassination attempt, but I suppose nothing’s out of the realm of possibility if you ascribe a persuasive logic to it, however false. As we’ve seen in many a sageuk, all that’s needed is a clever twisting of the facts to fashion a narrative that’s far from true but highly credible: It’s never the truth itself that matters, but the appearance of it, and whoever is better at crafting that illusion ends up the winner.

I’m encouraged by past displays of Yeong’s quick wit and ability to outsmart his foes, but on this score I worry that he’s at a clear disadvantage. Even if they were able to clear Ra-on of being a spy for Baekwoonhwe, she’s still got multiple black marks against her that leave her in danger: She’s the daughter of a traitor, and as such would either face death or possibly slavehood; she impersonated a man and used a false identity; and she dishonored the eunuch status by infiltrating it fraudulently. Knowing how dire the situation is for Ra-on was part of why I found yesterday’s goodbye moving and necessary, because I was hard-pressed to come up with reasons for her to stay, despite hating that she had to leave.

And so, yesterday’s sadness felt poignant but still sweet, like a soft pang in the heart, while today felt like a sharper, colder type of pain. Yeong’s heartbreak signifies more than just a love that could not be; it came hand in hand with a breach of trust and a fear that the world may never be right again. *tears* I didn’t necessarily want him to be blind to doubt—his overwhelming love for Ra-on hasn’t always made him act in the smartest of ways—but it hurt to see him totally disillusioned, wrestling with the fear that Ra-on could have betrayed him. My heart dropped when he started to take off his bracelet and then broke down at the gesture.

It was a huge relief to see that he hadn’t, ultimately, given up his faith in Ra-on, as the show made it a point to show us the bracelet he was still wearing; he’s entitled to feel angry, but he can be hurt and love her at the same time. It’s why, despite feeling bad for Ha-yeon, I actually found it really satisfying when he kicked her out of his private garden, because it felt like he was fighting to protect that love. And speaking of Ha-yeon, it was a bit unexpected to have the selection come and go so quickly, but it wasn’t unwelcome; we already knew she would be the one, so no need to linger on foregone conclusions. Glossing it over also kept us emotionally in line with Yeong; he was dealing with his broken heart all episode, and I could feel how disengaged he was from the selection, which made it fitting to move past it swiftly.

I just really hope that our couple gets a chance to talk out some of their questions now, even if just for a moment, before the soldiers come charging in to accuse them of treasonous activities. I suppose they could also talk it out in long conversations in prison, but I’d much rather that a clever twist, or a helpful hand by one BFF or the other, will save the day and keep them safe for just a while longer.

The ending scene also reminded me how grateful I am to this show for never dragging things out for too long, because it felt like this was about as much angst and separation as I could handle before it would have dulled my enjoyment of the show. I can handle a drama that deepens its emotional line and heightens the melodrama, but I don’t want it to come at the expense of gratifying relationships and plot that I actually want to see unfold. That’s the thing a lot of dramas miss in their last third or quarter; the story may necessitate angst, but I’ve sat through so many dramas where that angst resulted in episodes that were just no fun to watch. If nothing else, I’m glad we could end on a note that was uplifting amidst the dread, to keep my hope alive for the rest of the week.

I did love the use of the moon as a motif to tie together our couple; it sort of took over where the bracelets left off and continued the same message: that the moon remains constant despite location and time and even its variations on shape, and as long as Ra-on and Yeong feel the same way, their love will remain constant. I like its symbolism better than the bracelets, which always had that contingency of being worn—at least, the initial superstition did, stating that the two people who wore them would be destined to meet again, which is why Ra-on’s return of the bracelet felt like such a blow. The moon, on the other hand? It just is.

I'm late, I watched this episode late. Yesterday was a very tough day, too much drama was going on in my workplace, it was hard and depressing but I survived so Yay for me!

I found this episode stress relieving because I cried so much, I guess I needed to cry after such a day, and also because Yeong didn't give up hope and he found her. It was heartbreaking to see doubt playing with his imagination but I just couldn't blame him, Ra-on left without a word, she disappeared in such a time that she made it a little hard not to doubt her but even if he's angry with her, he still loves her and trusts that she'd had her reasons to leave, I want her to tell him now, just let him know about everything.

Ra-on's crying was heart wrenching but what got me was Yoon-sung's face at that, OMG, you can see his struggle, his heart right there, I couldn't help but cry and to make it worse they had to show us Yeong right after that scene. I find nothing sadder than a man trying to fight back his tears and failing, when he covered his eyes, I was wailing!

I hope Yeong found her because Byung-yun told him about it and he came clean and then Yoon-sung took him to her, I just want the bromance mended, okay! I think the cliffhanger is a trap for us viewers, they're not in the same place or they've already met and left long before the Kims arrive, that what I hope happened!

Thanks for the recap javabeans.

Aww, azzo. I hope you feel much better now.

I was hoping the same thing as you did, that Yoon-sung took him to her because anyone could see the separation was killing them inside. Fingers crossed they make it out of the house in time.

Me when watching:

Ra-on said to Yoon-sung, teary-eyed, it's hard to see him because she kept being reminded of Yeong. *sniffle* Ra-on burst into tears. *sob* Yeong staring at Ra-on's eternity bracelet and then sob silently. Bah! *wail*

Yes, much better, thanks dear.

I want Yoon-sung to take him to her so bad, he knows she's never gonna love him back, it's harsh I know sending her to Yeong but I think this way he'll be able to accept it and let her go.

and LOL, yeah, there was a lot of ugly crying this episode, by us of course!

Yay you, azzo! Kdramas make such a good getaway from real-world stress.

Is it still called second lead syndrome if I don't ship the second leads with the main leads at all? I just wanted to reach into my screen to give both second leads hugs, and tell them that it's not their fault, that they don't deserve being pushed away so harshly (oh Yeong, how COULD you say such things to a lady? How did you so spectacularly fail to read the Crown Princess, when she's wearing her heart on her sleeves?!). I wanted to assure them that time will ease the pain, that their kindness and sincerity should be rewarded, that they too deserve happiness. Sniffles. Props to the production team for executing those scenes so heartbreakingly well, from the dialogue to the acting and editing. I could feel the unjust and hurt they had to suffer.

Also, thank you Show for making all of our young characters so pure, so good at heart, so full of ideals, so not afraid to do the right thing. Even though they have been thrown into a screwed up world, and had to witness some serious tragedies thanks to the adults, our youth characters all managed to hang on to their innocence. They are all so lovable, so full of hope, they all represent that better world, it's a no brainer to root for them to succeed. Is it a naive setup? Probably. But does it make the show a refreshing breeze to follow, absolutely!

What a breathtaking cliffhanger to leave us on for a whole week! Argh! Fingers crossed for a clever resolution next week! As hard as it is to wait for the next episode, in a way, I'm glad that I'm following this show in real time. There is no way I could limit myself to two episodes a week if I had waited till all the episodes are out. Not with this show's engaging narrative and expert episode endings. I would probably end up marathoning the whole thing and kiss my health and real life priorities goodbye (I'm not speaking from personal experience at all, nope, no way, what are you taking about). I'm glad to have the forced down time between episodes to let my reaction sink in, and to follow along with our wise Beanies.

On a random note, I loved that little eunuch bonding scene when they were missing Ra On. An exact copy of Ra On and Yeong's library sun-shielding scene. We needed that kind of relief in heavy episodes like this.

OMG!!
I'm just gona share this article so that we can hope for our HAPPY ENDING because this drama has taken its own spin on history and the novel source
http://m.entertain.naver.com/read?oid=001&aid=0008728276

I will just briefly translate what I can:

MDBC is 18 episodes drama, that is condensed from 131 chapters novel so there's a lot of briefing out scenes. However, the drama also created more scenes and characters that did not exist in the novel. And it was hard to make the drama as it would be compared to Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Kim PD:
"first I thought the girl in disguise trope is already too cliche to be used in drama, but after reading the first 2 volumes of the novel, I really enjoyed the interactions, the scenes and dialogues between the characters.

However, it was hard to a writer for the script as many writers are reluctant to write script with a published novel as the source. Another concern is the fan of the original as the writer is pressured to do well in order to overcome the success of the novel.

I was on team B of Who are you-school 2015 drama so I has connection with writer Kim Min Jung. Then I asked her to become the writer for MDBC. Lucky that she was interested in the story and willing to write a youth drama but she was worried about writing sageuk as she is inexperience in this genre.

About the adaptation, author Yoon Yi Soo cooly agreed for any changes in the story. She said that the story has left her hand, so the production just need to focus on building a good story instead of worrying about the changes of the original. That's why we could comfortable create this drama.

Change in characters

In the novel, CP was created based on the real CP hyomyong. In the drama, there's CP, but this CP name in hanja is different to the real CP (hence the deviation from history and novel). This is to draw a line that PBG-CP is different to historical CP. Minister Kim name also changed.

All the characters from the novel were changed like that to allow more creative scenario. Even Queen Kim was not a character in the novel.

We planned to change the name Lee Young too but PBG and Yoon Yi Soo insisted on keeping the name so we kept it, as well as the revelation of the name was an important turning point so we only changed the hanja of the name.

Personality of characters also changed.

In novel, CP is cold man with a little arrogant. In my opinion (Kim PD), CP in novel is not interesting/fun. In drama, we have to show the character grow/maturity of CP, but CP in novel was already perfect, so in the drama, I completely changed CP personality.

The white cloud society (incl BY) in the novel was actually on CP side, they were a secret group created by CP, worked for him. However, in drama, this group is created by rebel Hong Gyong Nae, opposition to CP.

We changed white cloud group to an independent group with a dream to create a world that the commoners take control. Anyhow, the world that CP...

"Anyhow, the world that CP and Hong Gyeong Nae dream of is unchanged in the drama."

Anyway, this mean that we can get our HAPPY ENDING!!! because the production team is free from creating their own ending, doesn't have to follow the novel nor adhere to history

@Anh

*glomps you* Thank you for sharing this! Revelation and from some of the replies, I can already feel the hearts of Moonlight beanies suddenly being lifted on wings at this news!

Am now super-excited to know how the writers and the director plans to take this! Maybe we can see an overthrow of history (yes, out out out of the window you go, no love lost there! *chucks*), the Kim's power being suppressed, evil ministers get their comeuppance, Yeong takes the throne and lives a long long time with Ra On by his side (the ending that he always wanted!). Gosh, how thrilling~!

The only things left is how to also have a happy ending for our 2nd leads... I hope there is some room for that. Soon Sung being one of the Kims is going to be tricky, and with Ha Yeon technically tied for life in a loveless marriage... It would be marvellous if this could all work out for them too. And Byung Yun! Retire your sword and exchange it for a ploughshare!

*so giddy with possibilities*

Also I dont want YS sad ending in novel, I want 2nd leads (BY, YS and HY) happy end too

this also allows us to speculate more instead of thinking, no, history doesnt allow

Strangely, I don't worry much about Yoon-sung even though he's one of the Kims because he'd shown much loyalty by putting his life on the line taking the blade for Yeong. I'm only worried that Ha-yeon will be hurt either way, because being the crown princess and not being the crown princess will both be a tragedy for her. I guess her sacrifice is the biggest as of now.

Suddenly I'm looking forward to Monday again, I'm sure we have nothing to worry about in the coming episodes.

Re: decision to change CP's character
I was remarking in a different thread, how it was a genius idea to change his personality so that it shows so many more different sides to the CP, as well as chart his grow and maturity.

I like that the PD and the scriptwriters have definitely put a lot of thought into the show and how they want to present it to the audience, it gives me a lot of confidence to the fact that we are in a pair of safe hands for the rest of the run (not that I ever really doubted, to be honest, because the show has been so consistently excellent in its storytelling).

Re: White Cloud Society change
Interesting how they chose to change the allegiance from under the CP (in the novel) to an independent rebel group.
They must have some plans up their sleeves when making this switch. So the Kim spy in its ranks and all that sub-plot around it is new stuff?
Ooooh... how intriguing! *rubs hands in anticipation*

Thank goodness they changed his character of cold and arrogant. That sounds so much like a tsundere character and it is the type of character that I'm not fond of. I much prefer our Yeong who is cheeky and smart, but not brooding and unreachable. Yeong does have the temper, but he is playful. And I love how the drama showed us his growth.

same here, that cold, arrogant, perfect yeong is kinda too boring for drama, because I've read that type of royalty in sooo many chinese novel already.

PBG-CP is refreshing, that is one of the reason Im hooked to this drama and his growth as well

0

Very intriguing indeed, and "Anyhow, the world that CP and Hong Gyeong Nae dream of is unchanged in the drama."

does that mean Yeong will be able to achieve his dream Joseon? the one where "children can be children and woman be woman"?

and that mean yeong has to be king to make that new world, Im just so excited

I feel like they've changed the rebel's allegiance from under the CP to Hong Gyeong Nae to make Raon's situation more dangerous, and hence the YeongOn love a more difficult one. Because if not she'll just be carrying the sin of pretending to be a Eunuch, which I'm sure is easier for the CP to help her get out of. But I'm also excited of what could come out of this change, because so far the drama has shown us many times how Raon got out of trouble.

WHOAAAAAA I need a minute. Wow. Ok. This is a revelation. The writer said that the drama is independent of her novel and even she is curious what will happen next. And now we know that's BECAUSE the drama is really quite different from the source material. This opens a lot of opportunities for our characters! OMG! Are we going to see Yeong as a King???!!! I really really want to! And with Queen Raon pleaseeee! I don't know how that will happen, but I want this to happen. So bad.

Thanks for sharing!

0

Ok, so my internet decided to be a troll today and my comment didn't get publish, I had to retype! T_T

First thing first, thank you so much for this news, Ahn. Love you lots! *hug*

Now, where do I start? OMG, my head is still spinning. I can’t think of what to type! LOL.

I know quite a number of changes were made in this drama in terms of history, but I never realized we're walking on a totally different path from the novel and the crown prince's history themselves. Now the possibilities are practically limitless since we're not tied to the history itself, and there are so much that can be done!

What a fantastic PD and crews, they're totally geniuses. And I'm thankful for Yoon Yi-soo for coolly letting changes be made to her work, I know this is only an adaptation, but for her to be willing to let her baby be turned into something else, I'm so thankful for her! I do agree that our story needs characters growth, because how else are we going to root for them? Kim PD even said the novel's Lee Yeong is not fun, lol. I agree. I don't want another arrogant alpha male character in k-drama, they're so overhyped and not romantic at all.

And how genius it is to let the White Cloud Society exists independently, because we now have 3 worlds colliding, all with their purposes and we, the viewers, get the extra satisfaction of watching more conflicts unravel!

I do wonder why they decided to reveal this now though. I'm a little suspicious with all these Moonlight interviews coming out (not that I'm complaining), we are heading into sunshine and rainbows right? Because after the stormy Mon-Tue we just went through, my heart can't take anymore heartaches. Please please please be good to us, viewers. I have weak heart!

And everybody, group hug! *bear hug*

why do I feel like us viewers are raon and Kim PD is yeong? coz he's trying to reassure us that we will have our happy ending? just like yeong keep faith in yeongon together?

About the differences between the novel and the drama, I noticed that we did not get any negative comments from the fans of the novel. Usually there would be articles comparing the source material and the adaptation, but I do not remember seeing any articles and comments that the novel fans did not like where Moonlight drama is heading. That's a good thing.

And now we know there is really nothing much to compare because the drama is independent of the novel and the writer herself said so. And isn't she just the coolest and nicest for allowing the production team to take liberty in adapting her work. Essentially, we have two stories. Now I really want to have my own copy of the novel too.

About the interviews, it seems that when a drama is nearing its end, there tends to be a lot of interviews from the writer, PD, and cast. And maybe, they want to reassure the audience because the comments are worried for the ending of YeongOn. hihi!

This is exciting! I've always thought of situations within the bounds of my limited knowledge of what happened in the novel and the history, and now I do not have to even limit my imagination of what can happen because anything can happen!

Yoon Yi Soo is just too awesome as a writer. I'm glad that this she has entrusted the story in good hands, our production team did so well.

Because some time, production team can butcher the original source without consent from original author, and that's just horrible. It really surprise me how nice and trusting of her to ket the production take almost full control (beside the name, but hey, I like Lee Yeong as Lee yeong, so that was good she insisted on keeping the name)

re: fan comments
I know right, it so rare to see when there's adaption and the original fans don't go too crazy about comparing the two products

0

Ok, I'm trolled so much by my internet. *deep breath and think happy thoughts*

I didn't notice any negativd comment from the novel fans as well, but I figured since we, the international fans have no knowledge of what was on the novel, it's irrelevant for us anyway. I want to read the novel too, but Hangul is proven too much for me right now, I'll just wait till the translation gets published.

I never cared much for interviews or news of drama, but I'm glad I made moonlight an exception, because this is the greatest news I've heard in a long long time. I'm sure the production crews realize fans are tlo invested in the OTP future right now that not everyone is excited to tune into angsty week, hencd the rating drop. The ratings only peaked when Yeong hugged Ra-on in the last scene. So I'm sure that's why we're being reassured and comforted now, lol.

*breathe a sigh of relief*

0

Good point about the fact that there doesn't appear to be any negative comments on the drama vs web novel. I wonder why though, since from episode 1, our Crown Prince's character is already so very different from the web novel's. Surely some k-netizens would have picked up on it and commented on it? Or maybe they did but we just had no visibility on it, and they were quickly won over by PBG's portrayal of Yeong? I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, seeing how PBG is so endeared to within his own country.

In any case, I echo everybody's gratefulness towards the author, Yoon Yi Soo, for kindly giving the PD and the production team room to adapt and adjust her novel characters and stories into what they felt best. It was a risky gamble but it has certainly paid off - unlike other novel adaptations I can think of *ahem*!

0

Interesting. So by changing the hanja of "Lee Yeong" they've created a fictional prince inspired by the real CP Hyomyeong but his destiny will be completely different? So he may become King after all?

*prays for a happy, satisfactory ending*

(Also, how many ways can you write "Yeong" in hanja?)

0

@maryxiah
because of this drama, I feel the need of learning hanja looooolz

and I still haven't even master hangul TT.TT

0

Ahn, I checked that out from Chinese wikipedia, lol. I'm ethnically Chinese so Hanja is not a problem since it's technically Chinese character. But my hangul is super weak, I'm still reading the article you showed us, and it's been like 30 minutes, lol.

@maryxiah

oh I see, it's good that we're all multilingual here, so we can complement each other :D

LOL! Yes, that is indeed a lot of 'Yeong's.

What jumped out at me was this:-
蠑 (영원 영 yeong-won yeong): a species of Asiatic salamander
(Now wouldn't that be hilarious! ROFL!)

But of those possibilities, I can see this one being a huge consideration:-
朠 (달빛 영 dalbit yeong): “moonlight”

I'm pretty sure our Yeong is 朠 "moonlight". But Kim PD did say they wanted to change the name Lee Yeong too, I wonder why? Because wouldn't that be a dead giveaway that we have an entirely a different prince?

0

It is probably moonlight Yeong for uri Seja.

0

Guys! Thanks to bibimbap who posted the opening credit video on 106.1.3.1 above, I finally found out our Yeong's Hanja, it's 李韺! I couldn't find out the exact meaning, but based on the Chinese character, it something musical related, like how his intro is him playing geomungo, it seems to describe him as a genius in arts.

Oh and I wanted to clarify something, Crown Prince Hyomyeong's Hanja is written 李旲, but the character doesn't translate to Lee Yeong, but Lee Dae (Tai), I'm absolutely baffled why it's written like that, but wiki seems to think that 旲 = 英 .

I'm not sure if they can remove Ha-yeon now that she's Crown Princess. Whether or not they have the ceremony is another matter, but it seems to me that that's just a formality at this point. In TMEtS (where everyone is fictional, I know), Yeon-woo has always been referred to as the "dead" Crown Princess even though they never held the wedding.

But yay! We might get King Yeong!

Elle, she's only crown princess to be, still in training, not officially one until the actual ceremony. Now I'm hoping that Ha-yeon doesn't go through the wedding after all, because if we're changing history (or non history right now), we might as well change ALL of their fate! Ha-yeon doesn't have to live her whole life pining after a man who will never love her and in a loveless marriage. And we can see our crown prince marries the girl he truly loves!

THIS!!!!

0

But I think she's already tied her life to the Prince by simply being chosen. Even her father said it's risky for her if she doesn't because even then she'll be alone. It's really hard to think up a happy ending for her. Unless she chooses to be cast aside, but then again she can never get married.

0

This is concerns me too. Partly because in the teaser posters, it was pretty clear that Ha Yeon was a Crown Princess in her royal garb. It would be a huge troll from the production team to suddenly dismiss this out of hand and not see it through.

There must be some sort of mitigating factor... maybe a royal dispensation or something, like what Yeong did with Eunuch Ma and Wol Hee? Am not sure what the procedures are for Joseon court management and affairs, but am hoping that Yeong can somehow find a loophole or a way out, even after Ha Yeon becomes Crown Princess.

0

The King must grant full pardon to Ra-on and her mother, too. Or he'll die and Yeong becomes King, and he'll be the one to clear Ra-on of everything.

Basically WE CAN HAVE IT ALL!!!!

0

Gah, I didn't think that far ahead. I know we've identified her as the crown princess from the start and her character description said as much, but I'd like her to realize it's futile to remain by Yeong's side because he will never look her way. And I'd like her to have a happier future, where she gets to marry a man who'll only love her.

0

So many new possibilities isn't it?
I love it too <3 King Yeong and Queen Raon

maybe somehow Yeong punish Kim clan, cancel the wedding with Hayeon and marry Raon

Here's another very brief translation for interview with kim pd part 1 (the one above is part 3 lolz)

http://m.entertain.naver.com/read?oid=001&aid=0008728259
basically the first half was something similar to this http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2016/10/05/0200000000AEN20161005005500315.html

and the second part talk about Kim PD is envious of preproduced drama Moonlovers.

He said since MBDC is liveshooting, most of the scenes were shoot in summer so the staffs really had to work hard to create beautiful scenes with natural lighting

Though the summer scenes were well fitted, it's somewhat regretful that there's lack of winter scenes. Also the liveshooting catches on early as well as exhaustion, so it was hard to present beautiful/perfect/desired scenes on recent episodes.

About mid-drama, there's almost no time for artificial lighting, so the sunset scene where yeong/raon/byeong looking at the palace were all filmed, then put into sub sequential scenes later

apparently, the sunset that raon meet her mom, the production team used CG to combine the already filmed sunset scene and put raon and her mom in lolz

Kim PD said he was relief that the scene turned out well.

He is envious of Moonlovers as live shooting does not allow a leisurely manufacturing process and that Moonlovers had the baility to include scenes from all 4 seasons,

the last sentence is something about the use of silence scene in 2014 drama discovery of love. I think he praised the use of silence and that why he apply that in MDBC.

(idk if I will translate part 2 interview)

The sunset scene itself was beautiful, but out of sequence, since Ra-on met her mother at sunset, but when they talked at Teacher Dasan's house, it's sudddenly daylight again. But I'm just happy that this drama turns out pretty despite their many concerns.

You are such a star, Anh! Thank you so very much for your hard work in translating and in sharing the news with all of us here. Lots and lots of insight to be had!

I had no idea the production team had to work this hard, but seeing how high the quality has been each episode, I can only imagine the amount of hours and effort it has taken to produce them. Seriously, huge admiration and respect to the team who, though tired and under pressure, has not yet faltered so far.

Really hope that they can push through all the way to the end (2 more weeks to go! FIGHTING!), and then they should have a well-deserved break, and huge rewards and recognition for producing such a stellar drama.

I was also reflecting on the timeline and the fact that our drama setting has generally been in summer. It is a tiiiiiiny thing, but if we have had to go through around 8 months in terms of timeline (measured by the Queen's pregnancy), we should be able to see the turn and the change in seasons due to the passing of time. But of course, we can't because of the live-shoot system. Still, we can sort of bend the situation a little... say the Queen fell pregnant in early spring (March), it may now be October, and so the presence of foliage is still reasonable! ^^

@Anh

Like you, it seems to me that the PD seemed to have many worries for this drama from the actors, to the investments, to the story, to the quality of the show, etc.

A part of me feels for him to have to carry so many burdens on his shoulder, and yet it is a testimony to how much care and attention he has put into the drama, and it shows!

I hope he can rest some of his burdens now - the ones about the actors not being able to pull off their roles, especially, and those on the investments. I am sure those fears and now being laid to rest and he can concentrate on getting the story to flow as smoothly as it has been doing, and to motivate the actors to keep up the good work in spite of their fatigue.

For the sake of the cast and crew, I did also wish that MDBC could have been a pre-produced drama (or at least pre-produced for 2/3rd of the run), so that it doesn't drain them as much as it is doing now. I guess having to re-shoot the first 2 episodes did not help in terms of consuming more of an already limited resource i.e. time. But it was a very good decision that the PD made. There is an assuredness in PBG's portrayal of Yeong which shows, which may not have been there at the 1st shoot.

Like he had SO MUCH insecurity that he probably only hope for it to pass 10% mark

I'm glad the high rating now enable the production team to concentrate on the story and trust their actors to deliver scenes. It gives them motivation but with pressure to do well too

I do agree that this team so do more pre-produced drama, or half-pre-produced because they did amazing job with DOTS. And even with liveshooting, they managed to pull off beautiful scenes with appropriate bgm. A little bit of regret that they couldn't have the leisure to process everything perfectly like they wanted, but the quality is already stellar. I really hope that this whole crew will be able to get on a pre-produced drama next time, with more freedom.

All the what could have been if Moonlight were a pre-produced drama runs in my mind now. The Moonlight team members who were in DOTS did amazing in that drama. I'm sure they'd do well if Moonlight were pre-produced. Moonlight as it is is already wonderful, so imagine if they had the luxury of time to really do what they want with each scene. I am still amazed that they manage to deliver each episode so well even though they are pressed for time. The image of Yoonsung is that of a neat, outstanding scholar who has skillfull at martial art and genuinely care for raon.

however, yoonsung character is quite different from the novel. The orginal YS hide his true intention behind a masked smile. He's coldblooded like a psychopath that punish without mercy.

Am so glad there is a small section on Jinyoung's portrayal of Yoon Sung. I think he has been doing a brilliant job, considering he is a fairly inexperienced actor/ idol-actor which tends to rouse (generally warranted) concerns about his acting ability.

And yes, I also like that they have decided to make whole-sale personality changes to Yoon Sung's character. I did read that the original was someone who is quite cunning and hides behind his smiles (unreadable character!). I LIKE this version of Yoon Sung very much. He makes us feel for him, root for him, and want him to have a happy ending!

I saw a picture of Park Bo-gum and Kim Yoo-jung holding a baby (probably the same baby in the queen's delivery scene) on twitter. It's crazy because they're still a child themselves (to me, not that I'm much older), but they look like the baby's parents! Now I'm hoping to see King Yeong, with Queen Ra-on and their baby.

Hahaha! Yes, I saw that too, floating around somewhere on instagram and also on the earlier threads of the soompi forum (very hard to keep up in that place!). I honest-to-goodness could not believe how compatible KJY and PBG look together with a baby - they seriously look like parents. And the pose for the picture was also such a family pose! KJY was in her eunuch outfit, holding a baby in her lap, PBG was behind her in CP outfit, but with both hands on her shoulders and a smile that said "look, proud husband and papa!" *flails*

I am sure it was just an off-screen shoot but my goodness!

0

I must have gone crazy, I meant to reply to 106.3.2.2 cynkdf on the topic of King Yeong and Queen Ra-on, and when I scrolled up to look, couldn't find it. Haha, I replied on the wrong comment. -_-

@ suegarbaby Yeah I think so too, because the baby wasn't wearing royal garb. But they look so much like a happy family! *sniffs* I wish they show us YeongOn with their child in the last episode, I'd cry happy tears.

0

@Celine

Me too! Am so glad that they made the decisions they did. So far, this PD and the production crew have almost got everything right, it is quite incredible. There is so much hope and confidence that the last 4 episodes will deliver because such an awesome team is behind it! ^^

I just find it funny because I remember in that scene Yeong was being all emotional and serious, and when I saw the picture and everyone was watching him in the background, I burst out laughing. How can they concentrate? I really admire them for their level of concentration. No wonder they tend to have bloopers, it'd be hard not to feel awkward and laugh.

I think this is applicable to every scene, poor things. Everytime I see the BTS or NGs, it amazes me how many people are in the room with the actors, some so in-your-face with the lighting and the screens, you can hardly see the background itself. Yet when the scene is aired, you can't see any sign of them. Camera angles must be everything!

But yeah, huge respect to actors who are able to shut all of it out, focus on their character and their lines, and also on bringing out the emotion into the take despite there being absolutely nothing there to assist them in doing so (well, except perhaps their co-star, which is why having strong capable co-stars are a huge benefit).

I wonder why they keep pushing back Hwang Chi-yeol's OST, I mean we already know he's singing an OST for Moonlight since way way back, but we didn't even get the chance to hear him, not that I'm complaining Park Bo-gum's OST coming out first, but I feel like I waited a long time for Hwang Chi-yeol. Grrr.

dont they have other destinations in mind?

Probably cheaper, considering it's the whole staff so they have to consider the budget. Last I heard, Reply 1988 crews went to Thailand as well, I think Park Bo-gum didn't go the last time? Correct me if I'm wrong.

0

I think cost is a big consideration, and the familiarity of it being a holiday destination.

Bogum went on the R88 reward holiday in Phuket but had to go back to Korea earlier to fulfil his MusicBank MC responsibilities. You can see some of his interactions with the staff in Phuket in the 1st ep of YOF Africa when the boys were told to film their own spy-camera.

0

I must've missed it, because I remember I only saw Ryu Jun-yeol, Go Kyung-pyo, Ahn Jae-hong, Ra Mi-ran and etc. sans Park Bo-gum. I didn't see him until after they kidnapped him after Music Bank broadcast.

0

I think they can't go too far because of the schedule of cast & crew and also cost of sending a lot of people abroad. Moreover, countries like Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia are known for really good beach resorts which Koreans really love. It would be great if they go to the Philippines or another place this time because PBG already went to Phuket with R88 cast earlier this year. He seems to love to travel so it would be good if he can add another new place to his travels. I hope KYJ can go with them. She has a movie to promote right after Moonlight, so I think her schedule is already full.

0

OMG! If they really do choose to spend their vacation in Cebu I'll legit be flipping out. That is my hometown!!! Ahhhhhh!
PBG and possibly KYJ in Cebu.
I. Can't.
Crying because I don't live there anymore.
Crying at the very thought of PBG vacationing in the place where I grew up. He'll really enjoy our beaches there I'm sure, plus lots of extreme adventure-type activities he and the moonlight team might love to experience.

Great news! Am looking forward to the song, am sure it will be a nice love ballad to round things up for Moonlight.

Speaking of things that the production crew are doing right, another one is the OST and BGM. Have been listening to the Moonlight OST a lot lately and am loving every listen. The instrumental tracks for all the songs are FABULOUS! Even without the vocals, the music is so evocative!

Hi @maryxiah - in case you missed the latest news - Hwang Chi Yeul had to re-record his OST (I guess it might be a new song?), and it will be released on 18 October, ie the final episode. He did a recording on 5 October but has to re-record on 7 October, since he's still suffering the effects of a cold (had this for a few days), inflammation (of the throat, I guess) and a runny nose. So we HCY fans will finally get to hear his OST, hooray!!

0

Oh no, I haven't heard that. I was so looking forward to his song being released next week! I guess a new song would makes sense, since if he was to release Yeong ver, he should've done it on Ep.14 where it'd be best to convey Yeong's longing for Ra-on. Gah! Now I have to wait 2 weeks! Where did you get the news?

0

@maryxiah

the news came out on 7/10
http://m.entertain.naver.com/read?oid=022&aid=0003103592

but it didn't say that the OST will be out on 18 oct
Personally, I think it might be released midnight 11/10

0

Aww thank you, Anh. You're such a dear. I've reached my quota of reading Korean articles this week, I couldn't read anymore, lol. Too much Hangul, and I read too slowly.

0

oohh so Hwang Chi Yeul is no longer singing Yeong's version of Beige's song? I want to hear a new song from him, but I also want to hear a male version of Beige's song. Nonetheless, I am excited for the final two OSTs.

Latest update from the soompi forum:
"They started filming for ep. 16 yesterday/today after they finished for ep.15 (same day)

they will film ep.16 either until Monday or Tuesday at dawn, that's also the airing date for Ep.16.

If you remember the last scene on Ep.14 where Young meets RaOn in an abandon house, that was filmed on the same day Ep.14 was aired. They finished around 4 or 5am that day.

I can't be sure on Monday schedule because I haven't seen it but that's most likely their schedule.

While i'm typing this, they are either still filming or they've just wrapped up and comeback after few hours to film again.

*i put yesterday/today because of different timezones."

I have no idea where they get such information from but from what I've seen, they probably stalk the instagram accounts of the crew (where there is sharing of some photo shoots of the filming progress) and also from the shooting schedule which is apparently available for viewing online.

O_O

I knew it was intense, but for it to get this intense is a bit crazy for the cast and crew. I pray that the quality of the last 4 episodes won't drop too much, but I will allow leniency since they had to re-shoot ep 1,2 and that was good decision.

Hopefully they won't get to the stage where final filming is only 3-4 hours away from airing of final episodes. Like this situation
"However, due to the tight filming schedules, a 70-minute episode might arrive at the broadcasting station on seven separate tapes in ten-minute installments. It happens that while the episode is being broadcast, the crew would be still shooting the last minutes or cutting the rest of the episode. During the airing of the nineteenth episode of Man from the Equator, screens countrywide went black for 10 minutes. Actor Kwon Sang-woo was openly complaining that he was still shooting Queen of Ambition 30 minutes before the last episode began airing"

The real struggle and pressure of liveshoot TT.TT

I don't know if live-shoot is popular in other countries, but I doubt it, because most of other Asian drama seem to be preproduced. maybe it's unique to Korean filming style?

but then liveshoot do have its advantage of changing scripts according to viewer feedbacks as well as completing a drama in a short time.

but the down side is fatigue, rush production, no pre-released script, script can change on the day of filming which put actors in a tight spot, etc

I must praise Korean drama industry to invent(?) and follow this type of filming for their drama, coz it's damn stressful and many dramas turn out amazing. The cast and crew must be very talented and worked hard.

0

Yep. It's really insane. I remember Doctors last episode was filmed until the wee hours of the day of the final episode broadcast. Whew! Crazy! And I just read news that it seems (no final confirmation yet) that the fansign will be held on Oct. 19. They seriously need that vacation after all this.

I hope that the quality of the last four episodes will not suddenly drop. It would be such a shame. And I wish for everyone to make it until the very end. I can imagine the sigh of relief from everyone after filming the very last scene.

0

Required fields are marked *

The schedule is insane, for real!

From the looks of things, they probably plan to spend 3 days of each week shooting and editing for each episode, a pace they may have been doing since episode 12.

Wed - Fri to shoot the Mon-airing episode;
Sat - Mon to shoot the Tue-airing episode.

And that's barring any problems or issues that may arise in the meantime. The actors all have to be 100% spot on, nailing their scenes in record time. Gosh, the amount of concentration and focus they need to do when so sleep and energy-deprived, is unbelievable.

We already know they're live-shooting like crazy, but without these updates, we wouldn't have known how crazy it actually is. I can already imagine how dead tired they'd be, and they still have to endure this for another week, I hope the production crews get treated to a much needed rest after this. I just want to hug everyone for their efforts. I saw on V-live how dead tired Yoon-sung was too, and he couldn't join his teammates on their concert/performance, I felt bad for him.

What is even more insane than the live shoot schedule is the fact that PBG and KYJ are filming CFs and whatnot left and right while filming Moonlight. Those CF deals couldn't wait for them to finish. Poor bbs! But I guess it is really inevitable. Sure those CF deals have their own deadlines too. How they manage to do all those makes me think that they really do not sleep anymore. I am awaiting news that they have finished filming everything. However, we might get the news ala Doctors which is in the morning of the last episode broadcast. Yikes!

And PBG had to record that track for the OST too. Madness!

The only positive thing I can see is that our main leads are all young and so have more energy and strength to endure the manic schedule. The more senior actors thankfully have less scenes and so won't be quite as stretched.

But the director and the production team staff... I don't know how they can manage. Especially the director who is supposedly the main editor as well. He must subsist on all manner of ginseng, herbal, strength-reviving tonics or something. He should so a CF on that, LOL!

WHAT?! CFs too? That's crazy! I hope all of their hard work pays off, I know Moonlight is doing well in ratings, but I hope people will show them more love, because they've been doing outstanding work week after week. But thank God they're raking it in with CFs deal, I'm so happy for them, they deserve it. I can't imagine my days after Moonlight, I might be having withdrawal from dramas for month, last that happened was with Kill Me Heal Me.

Insane, right? PBG just finished K Swiss CF and it was shot like midnight or early morning. He was running around empty streets. And he finished Domino's CF a few weeks ago. At least, Dominos sent an entire pizza truck to the set. hihi! I wonder if PBG will attend TvN awards tonight. No word yet, so I guess he will not.

Public has given them/is giving them so much love already. And they are already getting more offers/benefits because of its success. Regardless of what will happen in the coming episodes, Moonlight is a certified hit. The mere fact that they doubled in ratings after week one is already an achievement. I was hoping for it to reach at most 10% and remain in the lower double digits, but it got way more.

0

Yeah I know they're receiving much love in Korea, especially Park Bo-gum but I wish the entire crew gets more appreciation, the reward vacation isn't even confirmed. Ah, so that's why the pizza truck was all about! I knew it was sponsored but I didn't know Park Bo-gum filmed another CF. Where did you get your news? I want to see Park Bo-gum running around in empty street. Heck, I'd even watch him sleeping.

0

I check for news through his fan sites on twitter and I check some tumblr blogs as well. :)

I, for one, want Moonlight to end. haha! I'll be very sad and will go through withdrawal for sure, but I really need to get back on track of being productive.

“Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” To Air Behind-The-Scenes Special Following Finale

While KBS2’s “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” may be ending in less than two weeks, thankfully fans will see a little more of the lovable Lee Yeong (Park Bo Gum) and Hong Ra On (Kim Yoo Jung) couple!

On October 7, a source from the drama revealed, “Following the drama’s end on the 18th, a special episode showing the making of ‘Moonlight Drawn By Clouds’ will air [on the same day] at 11:10 p.m. KST.”

This Tuesday time slot is currently unoccupied by any specific show after “Cool Kidz on the Block” ended its run on October 4. It appears it will be used to air specials for the time being, with a broadcast of the K-Pop World Festival in Changwon scheduled for the 11th, and this “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” special the following Tuesday, on October 18.

More than that, Yeong looked so sad and defeated! My heart bleeds for him. Why is he the only one fighting for this relationship? I get Ra-on's fear, but I just want her to wake up already, we have a virtually long line of women ready to take her place at any time, why is she not fighting for him after all they've been through? I'm sure there's a way to be together despite all odds. Surely there's a loophole somewhere right? Or she could be like her adult counterpart in The Moon Embracing the Sun, locked up in the crown prince's closet. >_<

Required fields are marked *

In terms of their relationship, the only thing that Raon did that I think was not the most ideal was leaving without telling Yeong the truth. She was not meant to stay in the palace. That was one thing she could have done to clear things up (at least on her end).

About other things, I don't think there's anything Raon can do. She is virtually a nobody and faces severe penalties for what she's done posing as a man inside the palace. Moreover, she's the daughter of a "traitor" and the the bad guys are on the hunt for her. She'd be going against the social system and the royal family, so fighting for her love will not get her anywhere. Yeong cannot do anything as well. He has responsibilities as the crown prince.

Looking at their situation, Raon cannot climb up and be on the same level as Yeong unless she gets pardoned or the rules of royal marriage changes or she turns out to be from a noble family. Yeong, on the other hand, can probably step down. Leave his life as a royal and be a normal person with Raon. As much as I hate that it seems Yeong is the one doing the work, but given their situation, Yeong is really the one with more room to make changes for them than Raon. By nature of her character and her life, Raon is powerless. If people, especially the bad guys, get a wind of Yeong being in a relationship with the "traitor's" daughter, Yeong will be in an even more difficult position, so I understand Raon leaving the palace. She did say that even if she cannot be there as a woman for Yeong, it does not mean she does not love her. As long as, in their hearts, they love each other, that's good enough for me. For now. Because I still want them to be together in the end. I do think that running away together is the most plausible ending. I want Raon as the future Queen, but that looks rather impossible unless we get more information in the coming episodes.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Celine, I understand that based on Ra-on's current predicament, there's nothing more she could do other than not implicating Yeong, it's just that I'm tired of her running away from him every time, when all Yeong wanted was just to see her for once. And it breaks my heart when he thought he was the one causing all the hurt for her, when it is him who has to go through all of those things just to be with her. I wish Ra-on can be more assertive, like when she was starting to accept her feelings for Yeong, she doesn't have to stay in the palace and fight battles she couldn't win, she just have to find a way to be there for Yeong, just like how she was his comfort in the palace even without doing anything to assist his regency work.

0

She can't be assertive or be there for Yeong this time since he's getting married and the bad guys are chasing after her and tailing Yeong's moves. It is best for both of them to stay away from each other until they find a solution. This is why I would have wanted for Raon to tell Yeong about the truth before she left the palace. That way they could have discussed plans or what they will do until the time they meet again and be together. And before the separation, they are assured of each other's commitment, but Raon kind of broke that when she left without a word and Yeong was left to feel confused and lost.

I have not seen the preview in its entirety. I just saw the caps, so I did not know about running away again. Let's wait and see how things unfold as previews only show so much and sometimes what we get from the preview is different from what actually happens as some information are omitted.

0

I know, some of the previews we had in the past episodes were kinda misleading. I understand that being together at this point might prove to be more dangerous, but I don't think I can stand another episode where they have to be apart. Can't they magically find some sort of tunnel/hole that they can have secret meetings in? Your screencaps and my previews are probably the same, from the preview, I get the sense that she's trying to run away again. Why is Moonday not here yet?

0

I kind of get why felt she had to up and leave without a word, because for her the relationship is over. There's no future for them now that she's a traitor's daughter, and I think she knew he wouldn't give her up had she told him. A proper goodbye would have kept him hanging on.

I mean, he still did hang on. But from Ra-on's point of view, I get why she'd think a sudden departure would be the most logical step to take.

Being together now will bring them mutual harm. We see the Kims already plotting to drag him down using his association with her. There's no magic solution (AS OF YET, PLEASE DRAMA GODS!) that could magically un-traitor her father or undo her own crimes. And I think that Yeong is coming to grips with the reality that they simply can't be.

And NO to Ra-on being locked up in a room while Yeong fights the bad guys. I lost what remaining love I had for Han Ga-in's character when I saw her passively sitting in her little secret room while Hwon gets down to business.

It breaks my heart that Yeong and Ra-on are apart, but I'm actually happy that Ra-on is out of the palace. It makes the danger all too real for her, and I want to see her survive on her own devices before our hero(es) step in.

As for the preview: there's a theory that most of it is a flashback before the last scene in episode 14. It does make sense, sort of.

0

Elle, I was just saying that, but I don't really mean to see her locked up in some space. I hope you're right about that being a flashback because I don't want another cryfest episode. :(

0

I think that Raon leaving without telling Yeong the truth links their love story to the Little Mermaid story more. There was one scene when Yeong was thinking to himself about Raon being the one who let the assailants in.

"The prince did not know that the mermaid love him, and married someone else."

But at the end of the episode, he knows! Phew.

I don't think Ra On could bear to put Yeong in the situation where he knowingly is in touch with, or trying to hide or shield the traitor's daughter. In a way, her leaving the palace was as much to save herself as it was to save the Crown Prince from seemingly committing treason. It's the reason all our three guys had to speak in codes when they talk about Ra On, they all knew things but couldn't admit out loud what they knew.

Of course, seemingly treason happened anyway when Yeong came to Ra On, so her running away was almost pointless. At least she was safe for a little while, she would have been dead by now if she hadn't left the palace. Hopefully he has a clever cover up that will be revealed next Moonday. We're still unclear how and whom anyone besides Yoon Sung knows her whereabouts. He had one job! Lol, just kidding Yoon Sung, we love you, poor hurt puppy.

Though Ra On has not been physically put in danger yet, the show still got us on the edge of our seats worrying for their fate. Be kind to our hearts, Show!

NOW I feel conflicted about the royal wedding. I was against it at first, but when I saw that there's no way out of it and Yeong did seem like he needed his own supporter in the court, I didn't mind it that much, not even when Ha-yeon proposed it as a business deal. But now that it's about to hit us in the face, I feel like wanting Yeong to just run away from the palace already and live his happily ever after with Ra-on, all things be damned, I just want him to live like a person, with a person he loves, in a place where he could be free from all the wolves in the palace, instead of masking his own pain, living as a dead person in the palace, without the love of his life. *cries*

I, on the other hand, thought I'm ready for the wedding because it's no spoiler and we all know it's bound to happen, but when I saw the screencaps, I felt a pang in my heart. I was actually surprised with my reaction. I guess I was not ready at all. Still, I say, let's get it over with. The sooner it happens, the sooner we can move on to more important things.

This is me. The drama had been preparing us for this for the longest time, but it still hit me hard when I actually saw it in the preview.

I felt a pang in my heart when they lingered on the moment where they get dressed (for the wedding), because Yeong looked like he was being dragged to executioner. I wish they don't do that in the actual episode, because I was pretty grateful when we kinda glossed over the crown princess selection, I'm hoping the wedding scene leaves as quickly as it comes. I thought I was ready too, I guess everyone was still holding onto a thread of hope that they wouldn't go through it after all.

It will probably be a grand affair. They held the outdoor shoots today. I think they had to wait for better weather, or the wedding is actually in episode 16, not 15.

Guys, I can't stop coming back to check on comments and trust me, I don't want to do it but I keep tabs of the comment meter, so when I see it's up, I keep coming back in to read the new comments. This obsession has got to stop. I can't focus on anything else.

Anyway, is Moonday here yet?

At this point, I can't concentrate on anything but the waiting! I keep on refreshing Soompi for updates, rewatching the episodes, and listening to the OST (happy Moonlight music in memory of happier Moonlight times!). I need help!

(But nobody help me! This is the most I've been obsessed with a drama in ages, and I'm enjoying it. Even if it does make me less productive at work.)

It makes me super unproductive at work, I'm worried. I need this to end, yet I don't want this drama to end at all. Madness!

I'm obsessed with the OST but I can't seem to find it on Spotify :( so I've resorted to listening to it on youtube at work. Sometimes I forget to hide the tab, so I turned around to see Yeong kissing Ra On on my second screen. Oops! Hopefully it went unnoticed by the co-workers :D

Are the actors and production ream really shooting Ep 16 still. I would have thought they should have finished production by now. Gee.... I can't imagine how they are rushing and yet still managed to give us such top quality acting and story.
I have never been so captivated by any K-drama like what Moonlight is doing to me now. I keep playing what would Ep 15 and the final episode like in my head.
E.g. The King is not as coward as he seems. He is plotting something. Maybe Chief Eunuch is Ra-on father. Maybe Crown Princess would drug CP wine one night and ta-da.... she is pregnant.
what if........

It seems so, they're so tight on schedule and catching up right before broadcast, Park Bo-gum didn't even show up for TVN award show. Chief Eunuch is not Ra-on's father, or else Ra-on's mother would've made that clear in Ep.12.

It worries me that the prod team estimates filming will go on until the afternoon of the 18th. That's only a few hours before the final episode's broadcast!

No, it's not the same song with d.ear - Forget You. Rhis is an OST for Moonlight and will be released tonight at midnight. He sure can sing. His dream was to be a singer songwriter, and he later signed up for acting when someone told him he'd do well in acting.

Oh really. Is Forget You not related to Moonlight? Because in the beginning of the teaser i thought he's humming to Moonlight's OST. Is it not? ^_^

Nope. It was just a cover for d.ear album release. His OST is out now. I download it from hulkpop.
