Dashing to meet Lee Hyun-woo in The Liar and His Lover

Whoa tvN works fast — it’s been only a month since the casting news was announced for their upcoming drama The Liar and His Lover, but they’ve already released multiple stills and another teaser! Contrary to the heavy themes like depression portrayed in the original Japanese manga, the Korean drama adaptation looks like it’ll have a more bright, youthful vibe. The Liar and His Lover stars Lee Hyun-woo (Moorim School) as a musical prodigy and his love interest, Red Velvet’s Joy, as a high school girl with an amazing voice that enchants him.

The recent stills show Lee Hyun-woo being a tyrant on the sound stage set because, as the genius composer/producer for the idol band Crude Play, he’s a demanding, detailed artiste. But one day when he’s out and about incognito, he meets a high schooler whose voice recharges him like an energizing vitamin. She falls for him at first sight, and pursues him with the straightforward singleminded-ness characteristic of all teenagers experiencing their first love.

In this official teaser, Joy runs through the streets to meet the object of her affections (Lee Hyun-woo). She calls him to tell him that she’ll be a little late, and he replies that he’s expecting to be late as well. But when she peers at the window to adjust her appearance before going in the cafe, she sees that he’s already there waiting for her.

In the voiceover, she says “He lied again,” but there’s a smile on her face. Okay — I’m the type of person who thinks honesty is best policy, so I’m not 100 percent sure why he lies and why she’s so accepting of it. But perhaps in this case, she’s fine with it because she thinks he lied to be considerate of her so she wouldn’t feel she needed to rush to their meeting, in which case, at least the reason is sweet.

Monday-Tuesday drama The Liar and His Lover will air on tvN starting this March in Introverted Boss’s timeslot.

Praying that this drama will work well for Lee Hyun Woo. This boy deserves the attention. And Joy; I enjoyed watching her and Sungjae segments in WGM. Hopefully she will be good as an actress too. I honestly have set my expectations low so that they won't be crushed. But I will be happy if she exceeds it.

Lee Hyun Woo looks more attractive in that hair color. Joy is beautiful but there is something wrong in her face sometimes. Is it the smile? or because of her weight loss? or the angle? She's so cute back in WGM days. But her cute voice is still there, very sweet. LOL

i'm still thinking whether i will check it out. Perhaps I'll look forward for more teasers. I haven't watch Hyun Woo yet but I trust some beanies judgement here saying he is underrated because he's actually good. Hmmm

Yes! I can't pinpoint it but something looks different with her face. Especially the nose/chin/smile. Did she get new veneers, cause her teeth look different....it looks off somehow

I read the manga (love it!) and while it has the angst, it also has fair share of comedy (and cuteness). The movie adaptation though, was straight up a depressing melodrama. I'm excited for this drama. And when I saw Lee hyunwoo's smile in the teaser I thought I died a little bit inside lol.

Yes it was the live-action was a bit melodramatic, but I LOVED it! I watched it when it came out, 3 years later I watched it again today, and I fell in love all over again. Always loved Sato Takeru, and I became a fan of the music career of Ohara Sakurako, she became a very good singer with amazing songs, also she's got a special talent for concerts too!
I hope this remake will bring Joy to another level, if the songs are special, even if her acting is somewhat green, it will give her more exposure. And of course, Lee Hyun-woo, he needs a damn good show already, he is a great actor!

I'm excited for this one. In preparation for this coming drama, I watched the live action of the Jdrama, and didn't like it that much. It was so manga like that it felt off for me. I've seen enough jdrama to know that their adaptation often takes the physical adaptation from manga as well, but for some reason this one just felt off. Anyway, I'm excited but won't get my hopes too high for it go come crashing down.

I m a strict no idol in drama, everytime i watch one i drop instantly. But why the hell is a girl with no previous acting experience is taking the lead ? This is so absurd.

could u share? I've only seen her acting in one time in a Music Video because I like Seulong so I want to see more. She looks a bit older here so not sure about being a high school student https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2HjO5QQGJw

ERMAGERD Seulong looks so gooood. I wonder how it would have been if he took LHW's role instead, since he looks more adult. Btw, that link is cut short, here's the full mv lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VHX2ovsx6E

@marcie I think she's referring to WGM as acting lmao.
Here's the school uniform episode, perhaps it would help visualize her as a high school student? (With Eng Subs, just turn on captions)

Oh, and here's an also subbed clip of that episode. It's made of unaired moments so it's shorter, if there's no time to watch the full episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjZHKqw_oMY

@Fema I imagine it would be like that drama Rain was in (not good) with Soojung if Seulong was in the role in terms of age difference and looks.

Wait, are you serious?

You're missing out on many great dramas if you refuse to watch ones with idols in them. Not all idols are bad actors. Not even all GREEN idols are bad actors.

Have you never watched Answer Me 1997? Or any of the other ones? Jung Eun-ji had NO acting experience and she absolutely nailed her character.

And have you never watched the critically-acclaimed (and popular) Misaeng? Im Si-wan is an idol. But he's great.

Not every drama with idols in it is To The Beautiful You. I'm sure some of your favorite dramas had idols you didn't even know were idols.

For more examples just look at the recent Dramabeans Top 10 about idol actors. You're doing yourself a disservice if you avoid all of them.

Of course I'm not saying Joy is going to be amazin but she should at least be given a chance. You never know. She might be terrible. She might be good.

Then you're going to be missing out on a lot of dramas. There's a *lot* of current and former idols acting. Did you watch:

- Who Are You (2015) / The Village: Achiara's Secret / Goblin? (Yook Sung-jae)
- That's Okay, It's Love / Hello Monster? (D.O.)
- Any of the Reply [Year] series? (they're everywhere)
- Misaeng? (Siwan)
- Discovery of Love / Another Oh Hae-young? (Eric Mun)
- Another Oh Hae-young / Romantic Teacher Doctor Kim? (Seo Hyun-jin)
- Coffee Prince? (Yoon Eun-hye)
- Greatest Love / Last / The Good Wife? (Yoon Kye-sang)
- Hogu's Love / High Society / Marriage Contract? (Uee)

Eric's expressions are always flat. It's not helping that his eyes are not that expressive.

UEE is a hit or a miss for me. She's awesome in Marriage Contract, but really bad in High Society.

Looks cute so I will overlook, as I have done many many times, the fact she is still a high school student. I will pretend she was held back a year or has already turned 18. Or hope he is still high school age himself and not supposed to be like 20.

I think the jdrama had some age span also. The guy was obviously an adult in jdrama.

I love the OST of the Japanese Live Actions, I hope this one will also bring some good music.
On another note, I never like a K-drama adaptation from J-dorama or manga.

A plotline that decidedly does not interest me. Too much power imbalance (HIGHSCHOOL GIRL AND ADULT I'll leave it at that) + lying dude + her crush on him at 1st sight + he's a producer while she's just an aspiring singer. It's literally like a 45 degree angle of how imbalanced this relationship is. Pass.

No more unbalanced than a 19 year old and a supremely powerful Goblin ;)

My issue with Goblin as well. I'd simply simply fast forward the OTP, which means I was watching about 20 minutes of an episode. All because I was too invested in the Reaper. Once all was resolved around episode 13, I dropped it.

My issue with this as well. I love Satoh Takeru, the Japanese actor who took on Lee Hyun Woo's role in the Japanese live action. BUT I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes.

Omg I love Satou Takeru as well. But yeah, no. I understand that people have different stances on this but I thought I should put my money where my mouth is (not that my viewership would matter to drama creators anyway since I don't live in either Japan or SK). If I can't agree with some part of a story or casting, then I should back it up by not watching the drama.

I had to stop watching Mirror of the Witch (even tho I was SO into it) because I was just too uncomfortable with the casting. I know this is slightly different from my original statement but yeah. Power imbalances are just... Not cool imo.

Was this inspired by Celine Dione's life with her producer/husband?

LOL why did I saw Bae Suzy in Joy? ?? It has been a long time I saw Joy in Running Man or what variety show, so I dont remember her face. But she looks cute, ok she is high school student. Btw, Lee Hyun Woo looks like Park Bo Gum's brother or twin.

I like Lee Hyun-woo's acting, but honestly, the character description doesn't fit him. He looks too innocent and nice for the role. I wish someone older would play the chracter instead (like Eric in Oh Hae Young Again). Maybe it's because I don't like sweet bubblegum type of guy much (like Park Bo Gum).

On the other hand, Joy looks refreshing here. I'm not sure how good her acting is but I support her.

seriously don't know why she has to be a high school student. hs students should date other hs students!

actually, the original japanese title is "she loves the lie too much" (kanojo wa uso wo aishisugiteru / カノジョは嘘を愛しすぎてる)... ^^;;

Wait! Cmiiw Joy didn't have bang on previous teaser. Did they change it? It's okay, though. Just very unusual for K-drama to adapt manga character's appearance closely.

I have mixed feeling about the manga. Torn between like and dislike.

However I cant wait to watch.

And Joy (is that seriously her name?) looks kinda ugly, she gives off a fresh vibe but the way all her features come together on her round face just makes her look weird :/
