Moon Chae-won considers Criminal Minds opposite Lee Jun-ki

Oh, I like this better. The Korean remake of CBS’s FBI profiling drama Criminal Minds is still courting Lee Jun-ki (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) to headline, but Kim Ah-joong must’ve turned down the starring role opposite him, because an offer is now out to Moon Chae-won (Goodbye Mr. Black). This is a pairing I’d love to see, even though it pains me a little that I might get to have Lee Jun-ki and Moon Chae-won in a drama together but it won’t be an epic sageuk.

The American crime procedural has been running for 12 seasons and focuses on a special task force of profilers in the FBI who approach their cases using criminal psychology to study suspects rather than the crime. The remake comes from production company Taewon Entertainment (IRIS, Athena), in conjunction with ABC Studios and Disney Media Distribution. There was talk of it potentially airing on KBS, but now it’s being considered at tvN for a late-night timeslot, though nothing has been decided yet.

Also considering a casting offer is veteran Sohn Hyun-joo (Signal, Three Days), who’s been mostly churning out movies (Average Person, The Hunt, The Phone). It would be awesome if he signed on—for what I’m guessing would be Mandy Patinkin’s role, though he’s only described as the team leader in the casting stories, without naming a counterpart in the American show. We do know one character for sure: Lee Sun-bin (Missing 9) is up for the role of J.J., a law enforcement officer and the communications liaison on the team who deals with local police agencies.

If they can get these actors to sign on, I’ll be pretty excited about the drama for the cast alone. Sohn Hyun-joo would make a great lead profiler, and I’d love to see Moon Chae-won as a special agent (plus it will have the added benefit of erasing her last drama from my brain). I have no idea if there are good lovelines in the original series, but we’re going to have one in the remake, right? *puppy eyes*

Criminal Minds will be fully pre-produced and plans to air this fall.

Agreeeee. This is like a dream comes true. Although like girlfriday said, it will be great if this pairing is for epic sageuk. For that epic sageuk, I will keep praying for Lee Jun Ki and Seo Hyun Jin pairing instead.

Just hope this remake is good. Good enough for these amazing casts including my favourite Sohn Hyun-joo ahjusshi.

(That is so true. I truly wish this was a 50eps sageuk based on the 3 kingdom era).

I was so excited I didn't read the article first lol. Yay for Sohn Hyun-joo, love him in films and dramas. He is an amazing actor!

Sohn Hyun-joo would be a perfect Mandy Patinkin! Let's go season 1.

What is MCWs claim to fame?
Typically its one drama that is so successful and etches the actor in viewers heart, solidifying their position..

e.g. LJK and his initial hits .or gong yoo with coffee prince.. or LMH with BoF/city hunter, KCW-healer, SH-OHY...

i couldn't stand come back mister (supr bad direction..felt bad for all actors), and innocent man was also ok... it wasn't any extraordinary acting

oh ya..and watched a movie of hers with chil bongi..

she is pretty definitely.. acting wise (i'd say she can act..but not sure of super awesome part)..

PS: watched her on running man.. i don't get this cutsey act.. do women in korea do it on purpose.. do men really find it cute.. i can't imagine how much effort it takes to keep up with that cutsey oppa act

I prefer her the most in sageuk. About her cutesy act, she is not the only one with aegyo in Korea. Even if you see Ha Ji Won in real life also not same like most of her characters in a drama. But real life and acting are two different things. As long as they act well, I dont care much about who are they in real life.

0

I think she did the cutsey act on purpose because last time she got criticized for being unfriendly on Happy Together so I guess it was her attempt to seem friendly. Her actual character is more 4D type if you watch her interviews. Plus something I really like about her from interviews is how she is always searching for stronger roles and talks about how their is a lack of them in the industry. She tries to pick diverse ones too. She hasn't blown me away yet but that's probably bc she works best with good roles like in Princess Man.

0

Oh,Please, make this happen! It's about time for Lee Jun Ki to join the rest of the world in Seoul 2017 so enough with the sageuk. I like Moon Chae Won for him, too. I know her but I didn't watch any of her dramas since 2010 to 2016. I've only seen her in Take Care of the Young Lady with Yoon Eun Hye and Yoon Sang Hyun which was made in 2009 but I just started watching Korean Dramas in 2012.

0

"i don’t get this cutsey act.. [...] do men really find it cute.."

---

Male here.

I haven't seen Moon Chae Won in Running Man, which is what you're specifically referring to.

However, I can add at least my anecdotal example to the mix concerning women acting cute in general.

For me personally, there's definitely an attraction to women of age who act in cute manner, embrace an adorable or youthful aesthetic, and have a childish side to them.

There's something "disarming" about a women who acts in a cute fashion.

0

(adding to my above comment)

This video makes fun of the "disarming" aspect I mentioned.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ICM6fhr2kY

As much as this is parodying men and their reaction to "cute" women, there's a lot of truth here than may first appear.

0

I think her claim to fame is definitely her roles in War of Arrows and Princess Man. She portrayed super strong women (considering the times) in both. This is why some people refer to her as Queen of sageuk--since she is most known through her historical dramas.

It's also the reason she has been shying away from pursuing sageuks, I think. She didn't want to be type-cast and has been pursuing other types of genres lately (Innocent Man/that drama that must not be named-melodrama, Mood of the day/Love's Forecast-rom com, Good Doctor- doctor drama??? lmao)

This is why I'm so glad she may be taking this drama on. She hasn't yet but I think she is versatile enough & has the acting chops to do well. Like you said, I don't think she's extraordinary as an actress BUT she is definitely one of the best in her age group. She's above average & likeable so I say she has something good going for her.

0

OK to answer you on how she gets to this level.

She never had any acting class training before her debut. After some small roles, she got in Painting of the Wind opposite Moon Geun Young. They got a Best Couple Award for that. MGY became her BFF and the main reason she moved to Namoo recently.

Then she was the second female lead in Brilliant Legacy, a solid success and she befriended Han Hyo Joo whose is also a close friend of hers now. Then she got her first lead role. It wasn't very successful but paved her way to Princess' Man. This drama maintained its status as the drama with the highest ratings of KBS in the recent years, until DOTS was aired. She won her first Top Excellence Award from KBS. The drama was very popular in Japan.

In the same year, she played a supporting role/female lead in War of the Arrows. Over 5 millions views. She brought home Best New Actress awards from Blue Dragon and Grand Bell.

Then we have Nice Guy in 2012. Song Joong Ki's first lead role. Solid ratings. Both brought home Top Excellence Award from KBS. His first win, her second win. Countless fans of this couple called "Chaeki" across Asia.

Next one Good Doctors. Solid ratings. Her 4th Best Couple Award in a row. Also an Excellence Award.

Afterwards, she faced her slowdown. Goodbye Mr. Black was bad. Both of her movies were not very successful. She is still adored by her colleagues and all the renowned directors she works with.

She had no scandal related to her personal life, plastic surgeries, taxes, parents, dating... Absolutely nothing. She may act cutesy but she doesn't struggle for that. It's her personality. She's very kind, soft-spoken and sweet to fans and partners.

She may not be as great as Jeon Do Yeon, but is not as bad as Kim Tae Hee.

You may not think her dramas are great. And she is not that great. But it's OK cuz even Adele or Beyonce got thumbdowns for their music. No one receives 100% approval. It's good enough that the majority already acknowledged her capability and effort.

0

Imo, her breakout roles were Princess Man in which she carried the weight of that drama, and War of Arrows (film). Aside from that, Nice Guy and Good Doctor were successful and that was also brought fame to her name. Her name probably not as big as Han Hyo Joo , Park Shin Hye for example (in term of their hallyu status) but she did solidify her position as a leading actress.

she is one of those faces..i was expecting normal behavior from.. so was totally surprised..

and then saw choi ji woo in 1N2D.. again cutsey act.. then i banged my head.. i guess its just korean culture..

however, didn't see the same from PBY on RM and HHJ in N2DD..

so was wondering if its part of normal culture or entertaiment industry reqquirement.. like they literally force female idols to play this sexy-cute-innocent character..
it just comes across as too tough.. too much effort.. poor them..

0

Yup unfortunately there is no winning for girls in the entertainment industry. Def prefer cutesy/innocent types. She's actually pretty sassy/weirdly funny from her interviews. 4D personality type.

0

I thought she was adorable in 1N2D. I have such a crush on Choi Ji Woo.

Watch Princess Man. Her character was so bada** and she was just the heart of the drama. Part of it was the amazing writing but her acting elevated the character. I've been watching Korean dramas for over 10 years and Lee Se Ryung is still my favorite character.

I didnt love her roles in modern drama as much as I love her in sageuk. From Painter of the Wind, Princess Man and War of Arrows - these three enough to say she is good actress. Agree she was the heart of Princess Man. Among my favourite scene when she put the sword on her neck in front of her father threatening to take her life. Only someone on her calibre would be able to portray the character awesomely despite of lacking in writing.

0

MCW wasn't in Come Back Ahjussi though? Did you mean the drama with Lee Jin Sook?

I watched her movie with Chilbongie and yea I'm with you that it was a mediocre movie. Yoo Yeon Seok usually oozes chemistry with his leads (or perhaps he lucked out on Seo Hyun Jin) but I felt nothing between him and MCW. For a movie about one night stand, it was very meh.

She was brilliant in Nice Guy though.

That movie made me sleepy most of the times. I think because the movie itself was quite boring. What a waste of talented casts. The other one was her movie with Lee Seungi.

0

adaptation of monte christo.. mr. black was it?

Nice guy is a boring drama( for me at least).. its a pity because all three main actors are good..

0

It was Goodbye Mr Black, not Comeback Ahjusshi. The latter was a romcom starred Oh Yeon Seo and Rain.

You should watch her sageuk drama, at least watch Princess Man in order for you to fairly review her. If something like Goodbye Mr Black was the first time I watched her, maybe i'll not see her as a very good actress (because her role and that drama were overall poorly written).

0

I could careless if she was in a hit movie or drama. She is a talented actress period.

I've rewatched "War of the Arrows" as many times as "King and the Clown."
"Princess Man" is one of my top favorite sageuks to date too.

Agree and since we are talking about Princess Man, I feel like to rewatch it. I have watched it twice at least before, when I was kinda obsessed with it and tried to promote it to my friends, unfortunately only me myself love sageuk at that time.

0

I am definitely tempted now to watch it

0

@ET

If you have free time, can give The Princess' Man a try. It is a well written, well directed and well acted sageuk. That's one of the rare drama that gave us epic cliffhanger in each episode. Most drama did well in the early eps and got worse in the middle. You won't find this problem in TPM. in fact, it is the opposite :)

0

Ups, sorry, typo. I meant, @EZ

0

@LaLaland / @Sera The Ms Temper

I'm right there with you all in your love The Princess' Man.

That show is still my favorite sageuk. It had a wonderful story that was exhilarating, intriguing, yet romantic. All the characters were memorable and well played. The score was also beautiful.

All in all it was just a stellar production.

P.S. On a side note, Hong Soo Hyun still ranks as my favorite princess to date. I just love her. :)

To say Moon Lovers was a flop; is somewhat a misinformed statement. Moon Lovers was probably the most commercially successful Korean drama of 2016 in the Producers perspective.

1. SBS has probably signed an expensive guarantee per episode for this drama and would have negotiated for happy ending as I think Korean Public TV viewers love cheesy happy endings. But really how can a producer sacrificed the quality of the drama just to meet the demand of just one broadcaster. Despite that Moon Lovers did experience No 1 on it's time slot and won as the Best Korean Brand- KCulture Pride.SBS may have not met it's expectation earnings wise but it's no near flop. But HOw come they are the only broadcaster who not done as expected for this drama while other broadcasters are capitalising big time?

Even actors of these drama are capitalising with their CF's, dramas and other projects.

2. Arang and the Magistrate was then the most expensive drama ever sold in 2012 to Japan for $200K per episode. However, Moon Lovers have been broadcasted 3 times already in Japan in different mediums. Do the math. Cumulatively how much do you think they have earned in one market alone?

3. DOTS was produced and overshoot its budget of $480K/episode say conservatively, it was produced at $500K/epi. However it was sold to China for $250K/epi. Moon Lovers was produced at 13M so it's costing them $650K/epi. Since there was no ruckus about it's cost so I'd presumed it was produced below the budget. This drama was sold to China for Youku alone for $400k/episode making it the most expensive Korean Drama ever sold. That is only for Youku. Add the amount Mango TV paid per episode for this drama, that would make it more earnings from China market itself.

3. OneTV- this drama rated 73%, the highest ever for any Kdramas.

4. KKTV Taiwan - LJG has been awarded a plaque of appreciation for drama being number 1 for 6 weeks.

There are probably more info but I have stop monitoring about this drama already.

Going back to Criminal Minds Korea, I am so looking forward for this pairing. I find Moon Chae Won as one of the Most Pretty Korean Actresses and has one of those with Elegant beauty.

Let's not mention China or Asia here. They are first and foremost Korean artists. Success in the local market and maybe Japan means so much than commercial success in China or South East Asia. China welcomes so many idol dramas with low ratings, Korean artists with scandals. Overall, in Korea, reception of the drama isn't positive. It's just obvious.

0

anjax is right, Moon Lovers WAS a flop. I don't see why fans of some dramas can't just admit it. Ratings don't even directly correlate to the real quality of a drama so what's to get offended about?

Two of my absolute favorite dramas, I Remember You and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, were certified flops. That's just a fact. They were great dramas but their ratings were abysmal!

Moon Lovers fared a little bit better than those two but I'd still consider it a flop as the average rating was only 7.3%, which was totally disproportionate with its budget and the hype surrounding it. The fact that it was such a highly-anticipated drama makes the low ratings even more sad lol.

There's nothing wrong with recognizing that and hoping his next project fares better in the ratings game.

i think a lot of people just think of the word "flop" as being synonymous with "bad," which isn't correct. it hurts to watch what we love underperform, but we fans need to accept that our beloved dramas don't always resonate with as many people as we'd like them to :( i feel like at least half of the dramas i love are considered flops in korea.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, even LJG has been regretful of the ratings in Korea but it was successful internationally (though I think still disappointing in China) as can be seen by his newfound popularity. I've just learned that a huge # of dramas I like such as Weightlifting and Come Back Mister end up not doing well in Korea, quite often due to stiff competition. Oh well.

Haha, i am one of a few people who dropped this drama half way. I agree, in term of rating, this drama is a flop. But i guess, it even failed to bring the actors top excellent awards mean this drama also failed to impress the audiences with acting skill. I did like kang ha neul and ljsk's acting. Even i quitted watching it but they were good. They only brought best couple award (many couple awards actually) and ljk got an award. But not an excellent one or for his excellent acting. Hmm...

He needs a HIT drama. Even 2nd lead Lee Dong Wook is in everywhere now.

Mcw was one of popular female lead with hit dramas.

I love j-dorama version of cold case. So i hope this criminal mind k-version will be good too. Fighting!!

Girl, You cannot describe LJG's acting by saying "Good" and dont compare him with LDW. I watched all LDW's latest works and I'm sorry to say that he never improve his acting. Even kang Ha Neul impressd more than him. And the ceremony awords is another story.

0

I think you are along in your own world. Re LDW, that 's probably the worst decision he ever made to be in Goblin. Yes they had the rating but that's probably one of the dramas with worse quality. Too many flashbacks, poor sound editing, too cheesy and the drama didn't really help Gong Yoo esp LDW acting performance wise. I think you were in your own world for saying that.. your statement was very misinformed.

0

@Yui Few dropped the drama? You and your alter egos. Too bad you missed a good quality drama. But if you love shallow cheesy rom-com, then I could completely understand your point of view.

Lee Joon Gi didn't win the Top Excellence because he took the Hallyu Award which was the second highest honor. The Daesang winner didn't win as well but both winners didn't share their awards to anyone. Unlike the Top Excellence, it was shared to 5 winners for Actor category alone.

0

Akita, I think you are alone in your own world. LDW had a series of flop drama in recent years already. Goblin finally could bring him the fame and recognition he deserves. The Goblin fever may could be compared to that of DOTS. It doesn't help Gong Yoo acting wise, because he has already showed how great he could be in his blockbuster movies. Still, everyone including who never watches k-movies are reminded of how great he is now. The ratings is great and his media impact is phenomenal.

He has already stayed with movies for a while and reached his level as Kang Dong Won who is like Korea's national treasure , but when Kang went to the Phillippines for filming with Kim Woo Bin, he even protected Woo Bin like a bodyguard sometimes, because people there only know Kim Woo Bin from the Heirs. Same story wouldn't apply to Gong Yoo.

I believe there is no romantic love line between the lead cast in the original series as they all have their own relationship outside of their BAU team.

But we can hope there is one here righttttt. I mean they got Moon Chae Won and Lee Jun Ki. Why would they waste this potential pairing.

And of course I'm waiting if they will put the genius-awkward Reid in this remake. He's one of my favorite and has a unique character.

There is no love lines between the characters in Criminal Minds and I hope this remake sticks to this as well. I've always liked that about the original. And i hope they don't just focus on Lee Jun ki and Moon Chae-won's characters coz this show focuses on all the characters.

whatt would be some of the stand out episodes of criminal minds uS?

tempted to watch..
but my fear is..with so many detective/mystery/ "pshycology /maths analysis dramas over the years.. initial episodes would become predictable (given new plots back then are trite as on today)

I personally like
- Riding the Lightning, Season 1 | Episode 14
- The Fisher King, 2 episode from the end of season 1 and season 2 episode 1
- 100, Season 5 | Episode 9
- L.D.S.K. Season 1 | Episode 6
- Somebody's Watching Season 1 | Episode 18

and the end of every season cause it usually more in depth about each character's story

This is just from season 1

I get what you mean with shows becoming predictable after a while. CM also became boring after a certain character left and I just lost interest tbh. However the earlier seasons are without fault IMO. And CM is popular coz of its characters as well as the story line. You get real attached and invested in their lives lol. And though i have shipped characters, i'm glad that the creators stuck to their word about not having love lines between the characters
Sancheez's list is pretty good for some of the most loved episodes but you kinda have to watch the season because some things lead up to the episodes. My favourite villain who appears in Season 4 and 5 and has given CM it's best episodes (Omnivore and 100) is The Reaper.
I also like
Season 3 Episode 9 - Penelope ( but you have to watch the episode before it coz it continues where it left off)
Season 2 Episode 15 - Revelations (again watch the ep before)
Season 4 Episode 3 - Minimal loss
That's all i can remember for now. It's been a while.

I'm on the fence - I really do hope that MCW + LJK do have a romantic line although I hope that the priority of the series focuses on the criminal cases as well. The problem with the American series was that although we had great characters with strong personalities, it ended up feeling like a box of toys in the sense that we don't get a full backstory on every character and there's a formulaic approach to every episode [major changes only typically occur in the episode that opens a season and/or the episode that ends one.] I'm hoping that what this drama improves upon on Criminal Minds, with the impression that they're going for a "1 season" version that concludes with the ending of the drama itself, is that perhaps we focus on a few of the "main" characters with one big overarching main mystery and then several different cases that precede it. Definitely anticipating this one especially with the excellent cast, and hoping that it's kind of a mix of I Remember You with I Can Hear Your Voice - something full of tension and seat-gripping but with a spark of romance, which I feel that the original series has kind of lost because of the sheer number of seasons that it's spanned and the lack of truly fleshing out all of the cast.

Moon Chae Won + Sohn Hyun Joo? Now I have to watch this.

I know ahjussi will slay it like no other and for MCW, I need her in a role which can erase Goodbye Mr Black for me. And this looks like it! And please please get a good writer to do the adaptation and a PD who knows his job unlike *coughs* PD Han.

Lastly, don't make Lee Jun Ki's character emo. I don't care about other faves like genius, chaebol(unlikely), jerk, socially dysfunctional whatever. Just not emo or hurt.

I don't understand this whole pairing thing. There is no pairing in Criminal Minds. Hotchner is married. Elle is happily single. Elle is so in the past that I hardly remember her actually. There is no pairing in Criminal Minds ever (Derek and Garcia is another story). They're all work together as a team and eventually later become as close as family.

The good thing about Criminal Minds is that the series focusing purely on crime and what drives people to do cruel things to each other. Sometimes whenever I watch CM, I wish it's all made believe or the writer's imagination. But sadly, yes, only human can kill other human and derives pleasure from it.

“Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself.” James Anthony

Anywaay.. back to the Korean remake:

So, we now know the actor for: Jason Gideon (Sohn Hyun-jo), Aaron Hotchner (LJK), and JJ (Lee Sun-bin), that means more casts are coming: Elle, Derek, Reid (my fave!), and Garcia.

Yaay.. cannot wait!

The only ongoing romance IIRC, from meeting to pursuing is JJ but I don't think they'll gonna make it the prominent cast.

Tbh I don't think any of them is compatible as partner,
yes they have chemistry and they use flirt words many times but they feel like family.

If mon chae won is EmilyElle, I hope they don't pair her with hotchner or make Reid x JJ

seriously just don't

You didnt watch Arang & The Magistrate yet? Since you love Moonlights, I think I will recommend this drama for you as a starter for Lee Jun Ki. Besides there was Shin Min Ah as main girl. As for Moon Chae Won, watch Nice Guy or Princess Man.

I am not huge fan, but both are fantastic actors who can carry the weight of the drama on their own.

Hmmm. I see LJK being Derek Morgan rather then Spencer Reid. He is more of the action character then the awkward genius.

MCW might be Emily Prentiss' character. Or Elle Greenaway if we go back to season 1.

Or they might make their own characters!

I personally liked Criminal Minds (until I got fatigue from watching 8 seasons straight) so a Korean version is really appealing to me. I've always been fascinated by criminal profiling.

I also would love to see these two in a Saejuk. However, I watched multiple seasons of Criminal Minds and there are 6 to 7 co-stars who have no romance between them. There is some mild flirting between the computer gal and Derek and that's it. I actually think one of the reasons Voice is working for me, though at times it drives me crazy, is because they have kept the relationship between the two leads as professional.

This never seemed like a drama meant for the big 3 so I'm glad it is going to cable. I don't necessarily know if it will be a ratings winner, but I hope they do it well. I actually think there is room to improve on the original. There actually isn't much reason for it to be as gruesome as it is....that allegedly was the reason Mandy Patankin (Sp?) left the show all those years ago.

I am strongly against any form of remake especially if it is to involve my favourite actor and in this case is Lee Jun Ki. But the moment I read "Moon Chae Won" being a potential lead, I am definitely on board. He greatly deserves an equally charismatic lead actress and she is one. Though yes, sageuk would have been epic.

You are right, he looked frightfully thin in the above photo.

Is he on diet or is this some crazy latest k fad about sharp jawline or something? Every time I see an actor or idol with sharp jawline, I cringe. It's such an unhealthy obsession with image. If they look skinny in pictures, it's a lot worse in person. I know that image is very important in showbiz but there has to be a limit and some common sense. The only times I think it is acceptable is when they lose weight for a role like which I think Ji Sung did for Defendant. That's not vanity but for sake of art.

Required fields are marked *

I believe LJG had to lose the weight for Moon Lovers since the director wanted him to look lean and hungry. Sadly, all of LJG teenie booper fans kept telling him he looked so good skinny (just like a teenage boy- barf- he's 30 something), so I assume he is staying that skinny to appeal to his fan's preference. To me, this makes me want to vomit. Why appeal to the vanity of teenagers who are run by hormones and know nothing of the world or health? If you read his comments he says he is going to keep that weight because he feels healthier. I am all about eating healthy and exercising, I am not not sure he knows what a healthy weight is....

Anorexia is a mental disease and a huge problem worldwide. Their skinny images just increase the self hate of impressionable teenagers, and to add to that the Korean judgement of fat people is harsh... and they really aren't fat.

I agree with you. It is about vanity now.

God knows how long LJK has been deprived of a lead actress of his calibre.

I really hope they will just borrow the title from the US TV show and that they will throw in their own twist and spin and make it all refreshing.

And I guess, LJK surely has a thing for remake.
