Ji Hyun-woo offered weekend drama Thief-nom, Thief-nim opposite Seohyun

Now that a female lead (Seohyun) has been confirmed for family drama Thief-nom, Thief-nim, it looks like MBC is shopping around for a male lead. The first casting offer is out to Ji Hyun-woo (Wanted), who is currently considering favorably. The drama is described as a refreshingly cathartic drama where a group of thieves band together to bring down the corrupt forces that control the entirety of Korea’s politics and economics.

If he confirms, Ji Hyun-woo will be working with SNSD’s Seohyun (Ruby Ruby Love), who signed on earlier this month. She’ll play a hard-working police investigator driven by a strong sense of justice who will do whatever it takes to capture criminals, while also being a warm protector of the weak. Details of Ji’s potential character have not been released, other than that he’s the male lead, but he did just play a police officer in Wanted, so perhaps it’ll be familiar territory.

Ji is also no stranger to weekend family dramas, having starred in some of the makjang-iest makjangs like A Thousand Kisses and My Precious Child. Recently, his works such as Awl and Angry Mom have been message-filled dramas highlighting important social issues, with his character fighting against the status quo establishment. Maybe it’s too much to expect that kind of social consciousness from a weekend family drama, but he was so good in them that it would be great to have that Ji show up in this drama.

Thief-nom, Thief-nim will be produced by PD Oh Kyung-hoon (Mom, Home Sweet Home), and written by Sohn Young-mok (Dazzling Temptation) and Cha Yi-young. While the premise sounds like it could go light and funny, the record of the PD and writers show more experience in serious melodrama so it’ll be interesting to see how this develops.

The 50-episode MBC weekend drama Thief-nom, Thief-nim will begin airing in May, taking the place of Father, I’ll Take Care of You once it ends.

I don't like Seohyun casting at all, but I would totally watch this for him!

I like him way too much to pair him with Seohyun - the experience gap is too wide, he'd be hauling her along for 50 episodes. He should hold off.

watch her in episode of secretly, greatly..

I was totallya mazed by how good she is as an actress for a rookie and idol..

i think goryeo director is really bad.. they couldn't bring out the best in everyone..

you have tow atch it to see her aggressive competitive nature..

from english, dancing to acting.. you can see hwo much effort she puts in to excel at what she does

I wanted to see if she at least has becomes better past Scarlet Heart so I watched Ruby Ruby Love, unfortunately even with the simple role and drama like that, she didn't perform very well though. She was OK but not enough to lead a drama, yet. It is amazing to see one by one idol try acting but the talented ones (in this group) didn't get the same opportunity. Well let's see if she will perform better in this drama. I won't be surprised if the other casts outshine her, though especially weekend drama has many main casts.

In her group SNSD I will say Sooyoung is the best in acting. Yoona probably slightly above than SeoHyun. Seohyun and Yuri just about the same.

I wish they had offered the lead role to Sooyoung instead. The character sounds like the role she should have played in PU38.

Sooyoung... ? Where is she? Last year I heard she will have medical drama this year but so far no more news about it. Too bad, she was underused in PU38. She needs new drama.

How I wish more idols have the courage like Sunny, when she turned down the offer for Age of Youth because she was afraid her inexperience acting will ruin the drama. So, who says an idol cannot influence in decision?

@Sera The Ms Temper
Apparently "Polyclinical Doctor" (PD) got shelved because of funding problems, no male lead in sight and no station either.

The Problem is that PD got no big name to it. The writer and director were not the most promising, there was no actor who brought in the endorsements. Sooyoung is not enough recognised to carry a drama on her own even through she might have the ability and she does not bring in the endorsements either.
But above all, a lot of the public in Korea blamed the downfall of her character in "Police Unit 38" on her acting ability.
For instance, Yoona got the public recognition after "the K2" and "Confidential Assignment", now she can manifest it in "The King Loves". Ask someone on the streets of Seoul and they will most likely say Yoona is the best actress in SNSD simply because she got the recognition.

0

Yoona has always been the centre of SNSD so she has no problem to get more recognition. From the time I heard SNSD I know Yoona first. Was she that good in Confidential Assignmnent? What was her role? I just remember there are Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae Jin, and heard it is a box office. but didnt watch it yet.
Too bad Sooyoung not that popular. One fine day, hopefully.

0

That is sad, because I believe she has the talent, if not the look that korean drama viewers consider 'pretty'. Perhaps she should look for roles in film. Even small roles could help build her resume.

0

Well...according to comments and critics Yoona contributed a lot to the film and made it worthwhile even through she only had 20-25 Minutes screentime. She was called the scenestealer.
But her critical breakthrough in Korea is probably "The K2" although a lot of people here would disagree with that statement. The Koreans loved her version of Anna.

The qualifiers are a problem again. This is the Suzy conundrum: an idol who keeps getting cast in headline roles but who should actually take a lot of smaller roles until she's better at the work.

This isn't specifically a criticism of the idols, by the way - everyone needs to learn how to do a job, but most people get to learn how to do it slowly, perfecting as they go. But management companies and broadcasters keep taking insane gambles on very MARKETABLE idols instead of picking the person with the best audition. It's a business decision, but for the viewer it sucks because you're watching an apprentice muddle through something that plenty of experienced people would have happily done.

Potential is great. Hard-working attitude is great. Effort is great. But none of it should earn idols roles in dramas that they clearly aren't ready to take on. It's harmful to the actors as well, putting a ton of expectation and responsibility on them when they're hardly prepared. Casting them in smaller roles and letting them learn by degrees and observe veterans is the way to create a GOOD actor. Otherwise you're just hoping to strike it lucky and find that one born natural actor in a sea of singers - and those guys don't need more than one drama to make it clear that they're the genuine article.

"She's getting better compared to the last drama she was in" is not particularly compelling to me. I'm watching TV, not funding a scholarship program.

*jaw on the floor!!!*

I've heard Ji Hyun Woo's name mentioned during the Wanted's airing, in the WWW threads. Now prior to watching Queen In Hyun's Man, it was of no consequence to me. So why is this important? First because now I'll take notice of him and probably, maybe, perhaps, one day, someday, I may watch Wanted. I'm still not through with QIHM but he's so........squeee worthy. That's the only word that comes to mind. Secondly and most importantly,

HE WAS IN ANGRY MOM!!!!!

*mind blown*

I just realized he was that annoying, naive, idealistic Teacher that had the rude awakening. Whaaaat?
I don't know why, but i find that amazing! How could he be such a gentle, manly hunk( with mad kissing skills!) and then be such a jumpy, excitable puppy whose lived in a greenhouse? Wait, he's the actor in QIHM, right? Pls someone tell me why this discovery makes me happy?

Yesss, he was in QIHM with Yoo Inna! They even dated for a while after this drama ended.

I don't remember the other drama i've watched him, maybe Tror Lovers. Oh yes I watched A Thousand Promises but his character bored me to death, I even skipped most of him and his partner scenes lol.

He was really good as a detective in Wanted, although the lead actress was not convening as a mother who lost a child (I don't know who to blame the actress or the writing), but I enjoyed the drama.

I think it'll be the writing and partly the directing. Because she was a mother in Punch and I remember the opening scene with the almost bus accident. The woman acquired superpowers and chased after a bus ON HEELS.

For me, he made Wanted worth watching. As the show went on, my love for the story waned quite a bit, but my love for his character increased. I wish that character (still played by Ji Hyun-woo) had been in a better show (and brought his little detective team with him! They were wonderful, too).

That's because the role fit with his personality, maybe? And his role was likeable compared to the male lead, so viewers easily connected with him more. But that was only the first half. The second half of the drama totally ruined everything.

Ji Hyun-woo! He's so precious <3 been wanting to seeing him in a drama since QIHM (which I marathoned in about a week, hah). Unsure about Seohyun's acting prowess (though I've seen Ruby Ruby Love and she was *okay*) but happy for JHW to sign just so we can see him on our screens again! x

Though I have been waiting almost daily for weeks now for signs of him in a new drama, this is so depressing. A 50 ep family drama? What a come down after Awl. He is deserving of more. I hope he turns this down. And her in it is just the nail in the coffin. :( I'm willing to wait until he gets offered something better. Come on tvN!!!

The first thing I thought when I read the title was " Don't do it"
Seriously, the actress that has been cast as the female lead doesn't have a lot of acting experience so I don't think this will turn out well. I hope he rejects the offer.

He is great but so unlucky, he should do something new for his career, i feel like he is not moving.

I mean people of his generation are already A-lister or taking difficult roles:

Park Hae Jin - Bad Guys
Kim Jae Wook - Voice
Jung Kyung Ho - Heartless City

Maybe he doesn't receive good offers on Public channels. Look at his cable roles: QIHM and Awl, all good ones. The one semi-good role he had on public channel ( that I watched) is Angry Mom and that was a supporting role. So who knows.

I think he should head to TVN or OCN. And Han Groo too.

Please please please if JHW accepts, let the drama gods be kind to him and make Thief-nom Thief-nim a good show

The writer's past drama not really convincing and worry me the most honestly. There were all so melodrama and makjang-ish. Dazzling Temptation for eg- nothing was tempted enough to watch it except maybe the veteran actor Jun Ji Yung who I can say the most interesting to watch ?

Ji Hyun Woo should go to cable like OCN and do thriller drama . I dont mind to see him play a villain.

I liked Ji Hyun Woo since his Old Miss Diary days, and to be honest his latest shows that I ever managed to watch was Angry Mom. He has this gentleman auras around him, making him seems like a nice guy all around. Therefore I want this drama to be good for him, but Seohyun makes me think it will be impossible. Guys dont misunderstand me, I have no grudge on idol-actor whatsoever, but Seohyun just dont. She's just dont cut it, being idol and pretty, that was her real job is.
