OCN considers a Season 2 for crime thriller Voice

Hmm, is this going to be a new trend in dramaland? OCN is considering a second season of its hit series Voice, which aired in the first few months of this year. On the heels of KBS’s announcement that Mystery Queen will get another season, it looks like we might get another multi-season crime and mystery drama in Voice. I can see why OCN is eyeing another season, since the show broke the station’s rating records when it aired.

Much like Mystery Queen, Voice is a show that could easily work with multiple seasons because of its procedural format. In the first season of the crime thriller, Lee Hana and Jang Hyuk starred as a voice profiler and a police officer at an emergency call center, who were also (reluctantly, on Jang Hyuk’s part) members of the same team which would rush to save victims of crimes within the “golden time,” or the first few minutes after the crime has been committed.

I have to admit, I didn’t watch Voice consistently while it was airing because the cases I did catch really freaked me out. I felt that the level of brutality in the show was quite unexpectedly high, even for OCN. I made the mistake of watching the first couple of episodes with the case of the high school student at night, and I couldn’t go anywhere near the show until my mom convinced me to watch the episodes with the case of the stabbed kid. Eugh, I still feel the creepy crawlies whenever I think about the kid’s “mother” and how her face appeared above the washing machine.

If Voice does come back for another run, I hope that the director, PD Kim Hong-sun, returns as well, because the intensity of the series was really due to the energy of his fast-paced editing. I remember feeling that the directing really elevated the storytelling in the episodes I watched, and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat as Jang Hyuk ran around with Baek Sung-hyun trying to save the various victims while Lee Hana gave out instructions in his ear. I also hope that the original cast comes back as well, including Yesung and Sohn Eun-seo, and not become another spin-off like its fellow OCN show Bad Guys 2.

OCN hasn’t confirmed if and when they will schedule Voice 2, but earlier reports suggested a premiere date as early as the first half of 2018. Mark your calendars for some more terrifying serial killers!

OK I am going to wish for something crazy, may be Kim Jae Wook's character has a twin brother who does not possess a psychopath trait and he became a cop and he helps the Golden time team to solve crimes.
Or even better a Doppelganger that has the same face but a completely new character.... Please..

Kim Jae Wook is the best cast from Voice 1, but the story won't be realistic if he comes back.

Now they just need another charismatic baddie.

I wonder if Lee Soo Hyuk could play villain well. I love him as Gwi but he wasn't chilling (nor the entire story / directing of that drama though).

Wow, quite a few second seasons are rolling out this year and next year in Dramaland. I'm kind of surprised... and I don't hope this will become the new normal because I enjoy limited run series and think that the miniseries format is one of Dramaland's greatest strengths. You're right, though, tipsymocha. If it will work for any dramas, I suppose it is the procedurals like Voice and Mystery Queen.

If this happens, I'm all in!! If this happens, I can't wait to see who they will cast as some of it's cray cray serial killers and whether or not there will be another over-arching murder mystery that involves our main cast like in Season 1. I'm sad that the possible Season 2 most likely will not have Kim Jae Wook, though, because his story already ended in Season 1.... For a second there, I was thinking, "Doesn't Yesung have to enlist soon?", but then I remembered he already enlisted lol Oh my, I'm losing track of all my SUJU boys!! So many of them!! lol

And I'm sad too about Kim Jae-wook that my first thought after reading the headline was "They better include Kim Jae-wook this time around or else..."

I love it! If anyone could play a deranged homicidal maniac, it would be Jang Hyuk. Maybe the detective's evil twin?!

How about Park Sung-Woong? He was pretty scary in BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS.

Yang Se-jong! He's been slaying it in DUEL.

The guy who plays assassin The Boss in DUEL is really menacing, and is good with a garrote.

Choi Il-Hwa was terrifying in THE CITY HALL. The venom that dripped from his character was stunning.

How about something completely different: a female psychopath?

Good news. Will watch. And listen. Closely.

As for cast: all they really need is Lee Ha-Na. She was great and it would be a stretch to come up with someone else who somehow has super-hearing.

I didn't really like Jang Hyuk so it's fine with me if the female lead has to win over another skeptical male lead detective. Actually, both here and in Mystery Queen, I think it would be cool to see a new male lead be gradually won over while repeat supporting cast say "Told ya so".

If they bring back language-expert lady, could they maybe give her more to do, like maybe have one call from someone who doesn't speak Korean so everything has to be translated?

EEEK!! My alarm just went of while reading this article and it sounds like a evil villain's tune!!! I'm so scared lol. I got so spooked while watching Voice. The bad part was that I mainly watched it at night so after each episode I would watch videos of baby animals.

I mainly tuned in to VOICE to see Jang Hyuk in a kickass role following the cerebral Dr. Lee Young-o in BEAUTIFUL MIND. It turned out to be darker and more violent than I expected. While I watched to the very end to see what made Mo Tae-gu tick, I don't think I can endure another round of no-holds-barred homicidal mayhem.

As a result, I'm kind of gun shy about CRIMINAL MINDS -- although I'll tune in to watch Lee Joon-gi.

If season 2 of VOICE does materialize, it would be cool if a fully-recovered Baek Sung-hyun reprises his earlier role. It would add continuity between the seasons, and would be a relief to season 1 viewers who were left hanging as to his survival. I'd tune in for the first episode or two to test the waters.

I hope that the show would hark back to the super-duper hearing that was supposed to be the female lead's unique selling point. Or did that go out the window for good?

I know, I have the next season already in my head--it would be about setting up the new trauma center at Doldam Hospital. The hospital would get a new make-over, supporting cast would all still be there, but a new love line would be between Im Bum (I need him in a romantic role after Duel--which I'm not even watching) and a new know-it-all female doctor from the big city who comes to town after finding out Dr. Kim is there--but when she gets there Dr. Kim is no longer there, but has left his team alone to stand up this trauma center. Han Seok-kyu would still be in the show, but likely at the larger hospital since Dr. Do has likely been fired and that hospital needs some reorganization after all the scandal it went through the first season. Both Drs Kang and Yoon would be at Doldam flirting like crazy, but having to be serious and running into troubles with contractors, investors, and insurance companies during the expansion. All the while continuing to do emergent surgeries on patients getting run over by trucks of doom at every corner ;-).

I'm usually a scaredy cat with horror movies and really gory violence, but I managed watching Voice fine. It was the most violent show I've ever seen from OCN, but the creepy factor/violence really heightened the drama's intensity. It made me want justice for the victims so bad and kept me on edge.

I like Voice but I didnt like it enough for multiple season? Season 1 plot need editing & tightening up and I hope they do something about it or we will get a flimsy plot for season 2. Voice is good but it is not even my top 5 crime themed drama from OCN tbh. Rather than Voice, I was hoping for season 2 Missing Noir M tbh.

And you know which show I think NEED to have at least another season? Secret Forest. Tight plot, amazing casts (they are chungmuro darlings, after all) and I feels there are a lot of other plot that can be explore after the whole corruption scandal ends.

It's actually not so unusual with OCN dramas to have multiple seasons {Vampire prosecutor (2 seasons), Cheo Yong (2 seasons), TEN (2 seasons) , God's quiz (4 seasons), Bad guys being the lastest one that's going to have second season but in this case more like a sequel to the first season of the drama}. So I wouldn't say it's a trend in drama land yet.

I don't mind certain dramas getting another season with genres like crime thrillers. I do love that kdramas have a finality to their piece. I think that was one of the reasons what drew me to kdramas. Watching how Hollywood tv go on for seasons where their stories falters at some point or loose their substance or what made them so great because they are always try to amp each season or make it more complex etc. So I'm glad that most kdrama do not get second seasons. Though there are times when I'm fangirling and wish to see more of our leads or our ensemble of characters live out their fictional lives :) .

Hoahhh... I know that Voice is type of crime Kdrama that you can make another season of it, I really like to see it 'cause it my favorite drama too. But, I curious how they will make the background case (the prime case that they want to resolve), in the 1st season they make Janghyuk's and Lee Hana's father die that what trigger them to join this team.
Same like you, I would love If they make the cast from season 1 also appear in season 2. and the hope they use same PD :D

Before even thinking about the second season of Voice the writer needs to up her game. If it not for the director the series would have been really 'meh...'. Frequent lapse of logic were infuriating. It seemed like writer is trying to befool the viewers. Although she was good in various aspects but due to lack of characterization I failed to emphatize with the actors.

You took the words right out my mind. I can't imagine this writer fixing in a new season what she didn't do in the first one. Voice was "thrilling" thanks to the PD who created the atmosphere but script and characterization was lacking, especifically with the leads. And I absolutely love Jang Hyuk so I don't want him stuck with a mediocre role like this again.

Required fields are marked *

And I'm sure Jang Hyuk will not be returning for the next season. I'm surprised at the amount of haterd people heaped on him for this role. I've seen nearly all of his work and I think he is fairly talented. But he had few bad moments in Voice (only few) and there was not much room left for him to push his limits because writer didn't develop his character at all. Above all every actor has his bad days so had JH in Voice. So I wish next time he gets something great and then I'll see how volatile people's memory really is because same people will be heaping praises on him.

Cha Seung-won would do nicely as a psychopath.

Ryu Deok-hwan would be dandy if this goes into production after he gets back from military service, which he entered in early March, 2016. He was great in OUR TOWN.

On the distaff side, Kim Mi-Kyung (Mama Hwang in OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN) would be an interesting choice, as would Shin Eun-Jung (the fiery lady in red in FAITH).
