Drama viewership ratings for the week of Nov. 13-19, 2017
by javabeans
A few shows just wrapped up, which means we’ve got a few new shows to look forward to in the coming weeks. The Wednesday-Thursday tvN series Buam-dong Revenge Club capped off its well-received run with a high of 6.3% for its finale episode, while Go Back Spouses also ended with a series high on Saturday with a 7.3% rating. Both dramas were 12-episode series, a length I find underutilized in dramaland. I welcome short and sweet!
While You Were Sleeping also wrapped up its run on SBS, and while it didn’t go out on a series high (that would be 10.0% for Episode 14), it came pretty close (9.7%) and ended respectably in first place. (It didn’t hurt that MBC is still airing reruns in their Wednesday-Thursday slot and won’t premiere I’m Not a Robot for a few more weeks yet.)
The rest of the shows held pretty steady in their ranks/slots, and I expect those trends to remain in place for the rest of their runs. We’ll see how the upcoming crop shakes things up!

I'm happy that The Package closed at more than 2%. I'll miss that drama 😊
Can't believe Wyws ended, while Tol still hasn't 😮
I would have probably been wat more sad for the end of Avengers Social Club, but Prison Playbook is almost here, and I've been waiting since 17 july for it, so I am happy 😂😂😂😂

I was satisfied with go back spouse's finale. It was a good end to an overall great drama. And i'm happy for the spike in ratings for the final episode. It deserves all the hype and love it got or even more.

Despite the SLS I appreciated the send off to the second leads. It was indeed a satisfying ending to a great drama...well possibly except for one thing (which warrants a greater discussion in the recap). The spike at the end helped tie a nearly neat boat.

I'm not saying goodbye to both Buamdong Revenge Club and Go Back Couple yet. I'm waiting the subs for BRC while GBC - I haven't watched the finale with subs yet.. But happy it ended at high note.
BRC is the second highest rating after Live Up To Your Name for tvN drama this year while Forest of Secrets is in third place (average rating). Hopefully it will get season 2!
Looking forward to see Nothing To Lose and Wise Prison Life next week!

It's amazing how the two least promoted TvN dramas are the one that gave the station the top 2 highest ratings this year. I Mean no promotion, no hype but solely depend on their own merits 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Buamdong comes in second place as my beloved drama this year after LUTYN and coming in third probably is "Because This Life Is Our First" and wow... All are TvN's dramas. While I am enjoying BTLIOF, I still prefer "Nigeru Wa Haji" a lot more.

I thought I'm the only one. I watched We Married as Job after I got hooked on the first two episodes of BTIMFL. I heard BTIMFL is the korean version of japanese dorama or inspired by it so I need to check the original material. At the time, I felt Korean version was much more superior, but latest development of BTIMFL changed my opinion. I enjoy We Married as Job more since it gets to the point of the problem of two people who get married for practical purpose, meanwhile BTIMFL gets more dramatic and I'm not fond of it.

It's probably because of the idiot female lead. I love everything about the drama except for her. Shes so annoying and doesn't think. It also doesn't help that Go Ara is terrible at delivering her every line (not just in this drama but in everything I've seen her in). If the storyline want compelling and if the rest of the cast weren't nailing it, I would have said goodbye to this drama weeks ago.

Agreed. Idk what happened to Go Ara in this dram (I kinda gave up on her after Hwarang), I thought she was great in her previous works like You Are All Surrounded etc. The plot for Black is friggin amazing, and the rest of the cast are just superb.

Black is a good drama, some people don't know. And the ratings are not that bad. It didn't get to 1% though..so it's not bad.
As for the extension, I think it's not a about the ratings alone but the story cannot be contained in 16 episodes..
I would rather choose 18 episodes for Black than to see a rushed ending in 16 episodes.
And honestly, I like how Ha Ram's character is written through her flaws (she's not that perfect) but I like her strong will to help people at any cost. And I think that's some people didn't see.

As mentioned in this article, tv networks should start considering 12-episode series. That's what I like about Japanese series, they only have 10-12 episodes per series. Temperature of Love would've probably maintained its ratings if they kept their series short, as well as maintained the writing quality.
Anyway, so happy for Go Back Couple! As much as I wanted a series extension, I'm still satisfied with the finale. Most of the characters were fleshed out and it was refreshing for a change to have "mature" second leads. Thanks for giving us a swoony Nam-gil/Jang Ki-yong, Show 😍

I wonder if the standard of 16 episodes (over 10 or 12) is due to production costs? With 16 episodes, it would take around 6 drama's a year to fill that timeslot, while with 12 episodes, it would take 8 to do the same. Quite possibly, it doesn't take 33% more cost to make a 16 vs 12 episode drama.
But if these shorter ones start dominating ratings, pressure from advertising dollars may start changing the landscape.
The benefit of the shorter J-drama type series is possibly slightly less flabby dramas and also appear to spawn 2nd seasons of the more popular ones (although that is a mixed bag - 2nd seasons ride off the coattails but don't always deliver)
This is just an impression, but it feels like J-dramas are more focused plot-wise using smaller main and support casts. One reason many people enjoy K-dramas could be that they use more actors usually around sub-plots of family and friends.

I stopped watching J-dramas 7 years ago and I've only focused on rom-coms so I'm not sure if melos, thrillers, and the like would benefit from lesser episodes.
Anyway, we're no longer sure of what actually constitutes a series success in the eyes of a major or cable network. I'm still hopeful that despite the "small" ratings of some shows, the networks will continue to produce interesting shows for us to binge and fangirl over :)

Let's hope so. Domestically, things appear to be tough for the broadcasters and producers.
Without high ratings (probably should combine streaming views as well) it would be difficult to justify advertising rates for dramas. There is also the issue of the overall economy which, if it fails to grow, will also restrict advertising money in general.
If there is some loosening of the China embargo on S Korea entertainment, things might look a bit more positive in the short term.
The entertainment industry is (by all accounts) not a very high paying one in S Korea. If money continues to decline, then it may be hard to attract new talent (actors, writers, etc) into the industry. Long term, if this persists, it does not bode well for the industry or it's product.

Afaik Jdrama has their long-running series like the seasonal detective, hospital and their weekend 100+ drama for a bigger cast and family related.
The one that has 10-12 and focuses on the smaller cast is only applied to prime-time drama, they like to fill the gap between drama with special short drama around 1-4 ep or special ep for the related drama.
The reason for shorter ep is mostly because drama aired by season, Japanese drama series are broadcast in three-month seasons: winter (January–March), spring (April–June), summer (July–September), and autumn or fall (October–December) with 1 ep every week. So they only have 12 weeks, therefore 1 season would be maxed with 12 ep.

Always rooting for Black. I was hoping all the information we got recently would increase the rating but I guess not everybody has the patience this series demands.
I would also like to see higher ratings for Because This Life Is Our First but I'm glad the numbers are stable.
I agree that dramas with not much going on (like Temperature of love) would benefit from fewer episodes, but I'm also glad that Black got more! It depends on the story.

It's really addictive. The writer knows how to yank people's chains with the cliffhanger (and do a fakeout for the next episode). The emotional impacts are on point too so some of the issues and emotions really hit home. With a very likeable cast, it's an easy watch.

My Daughter Seo-young would be perhaps the worst weekend dramas i watched( I watched around total of 7 weekend dramas including this). I only tolerated that show on and off watching, just for Park Hae Jin and his romance with the wife part. It was such a disappointing drama.

Go Back Couple is one of the best but underrated drama. I cried a lot because of Jang Nara, Son Ho Jun and ahjumma . I think they ended the drama very well. Only mom knows what happened cause when they came back in their present life everyone's fine and only mom is not in the present time. I will definitely rewatch it over and over again as I can relate in all their struggles and pain. Their regrets and everything. Go Back Couple JJang. I actually want them to extend it to 16 episodes but if that will ruin the story I think they did a good decision in ending it in 12. I will surely recommend Go back to my friends

You should try continue watching gbc. At first i was not much a fan of its color pallete. The gloomy scenes were too gloomy and the bright scenes were so punchy. Hahaha. But i stayed for the plot. And i am so happy i stayed. It is an underated drama, but it is truly full of heart and emotions. I laughed and cried watching GBC 😀

Ugh Revolutionary Love is soooo not what I was hoping for. I'm actually still watching this for Gong Myung as I can't stand Si Won here. If anything, this drama just proves that Si Won is not leading man material. He does so much better as a second lead (like how he stole every scene in She Was Pretty).

I love Revolutionary Love. I like the fact that Siwon plays the immature 3rd gen. chaebol in the goofy, over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek way. I'm sick of male leads unable to get out of the Harlequin-romance-novel Leading Man straight jacket. Despite his upbringing and class, Hyuk (Siwon) has a pure heart, which instantly recognizes another pure heart in Jun. He has the courage to love Jun openly that Jaehun (Gong Myung) lacks. Some of the supporting actors (Hyuk's dad and mom, Jun's cleaning crew friends) deliver unexpectedly strong performances. The drama is quite ambitious in trying to be at once comedy, sweet love story, bildungsroman, and social commentary. I think it could become a classic in time though I'd have to see it to the end.

It is doing very well (BRC did even better) given
a) It is on cable not broadcast ( broadcast ratings typically 4x cable ratings)
b) no idols (well apart from Bomi)
c) no makjang. no OTT bad guy/manipulative ex's etc
d) funny but not slapstick funny
e) quieter in character development.
Seems like the audience isn't in the mood for this kind of drama as 20th Century Boy and Girl (in similar vein) is doing very badly and GBS is also not really pulling in the ratings.
BTIOFL is also mildly subversive of drama tropes and, if you think about it, it is a pretty targeted age group of main characters. The family dynamics are mostly extended cameo's and implied rather than shown - possibly alienating the older audiences.
Note also that many of the relationships go somewhat against the Confucian ethos of filial piety, patriarchy, respect for seniors in work environment. I think to Western and younger audiences it may not seem that way, but to a more conservative Confucian mindset - these are not small issues.
In this mindset, to kill/assault or rob is considered a crime of one person against another, but to disrespect parents, elders or "authority" is like a crime against society. Which is why in many Korean dramas the hero/heroine, while they can defy their parents to achieve a higher "societal goal" of justice, is expected to reconcile even with the most evil parent at the end. The child is never allowed to "happily" triumph over the defeat of an evil parent, they must show sadness regardless of the evils of the parent. To do otherwise is nearly unthinkable.

YAY! Money flower's ratings are increasing episode by episode.
I am so enjoying Money Flower. It is very different makjang drama. As of now i think one of the best dramas currently airing, specially the best on the weekend. The pace of this show is so so good, and there is never a boring moment. Filled with mysteriousness and a dark revenge game and romance on the side, this show is really going great. I pray that they dont ruin it later, and i am happy that it is just 24 episodes and not 50. I watched glamorous temptation, which is from the same production i think, and that drama also was very good drama with strong initial episodes and a sweet mid point, but then it got a bit OTT, and so i dropped and never watched the ending because it was 50 eps long. So that is why i am hoping that this drama continue to do well in the writing, direction and the ratings too till its end.
Going back spouses, another great drama which just ended with a 7% mark and i am still happy about it. This drama is such an emotional roller coaster ride. I cried, i laughed, i, smiled , i felt angry, i felt sad, i felt hurt , and all of the emotions in me always unraveled whenever i watched any episodes from this drama. I would describe this drama as a beautiful autumn.
Because this life is our first also is steadily increasing in ratings just teeny bit, and i really hope that this drama ends with a higher rating, because it deserves it. I never knew i would be attached to a robot-like male lead character, who is actually is so warm, and softhearted inside and is really the most logical male leads ever. Love you SeHee
