Snow, steam, and back-hugs in Seo Kang-joon’s robot drama Are You Human Too

It’s been a while since there have been any updates on the other robot rom-com in the pipeline, Are You Human Too (as opposed to MBC’s I’m Not a Robot), so I’m glad to see that it’s still chugging along. This drama comes from KBS, starring Seo Kang-joon (Entourage) in a dual role as a human and his robot look-alike. Directed by Cha Young-hoon (Baek-hee Has Returned, Shark) and written by Jo Jung-joo (Princess’s Man), Are You Human Too has an interesting setup that sounds really intriguing.

Kim Sung-ryung (Legend of the Blue Sea) plays a world-renowned robotics expert whose son, played by Seo Kang-joon, ends up in a comatose state. In order to protect her son and his chaebol inheritance from their greedy relatives, she creates an android that looks exactly like him to impersonate him while he gets well. Gong Seung-yeon (Circle) plays a former boxer and current bodyguard who becomes the closest companion to the newly created humanoid bot.

Filming began in June of this year and ended this past November, but the project has been in the works for nearly two years. Are You Human Too was filmed partially overseas in the Czech Republic, and some of the more intensive scenes were overseen by a special effects movie team. It’s no wonder the production cost was over 10 billion won (over $9 million).

A teaser trailer of Are You Human Too was released earlier this year at MIPCOM, a global entertainment trade fair and forum where over 14,000 broadcasting and production teams representing nearly a hundred countries introduce their latest creations. According to reports, there was a lot of interest from international content buyers in Are You Human Too’s potential, especially because of Seo Kang-joon’s popularity.

Currently, KBS has wrapped up filming for the fully pre-produced Are You Human Too and is getting ready to air it in the beginning half of next year.

It took them 2 years to make it and now they are releasing it when a similar show is airing. I think they should wait. There was Borg Mom, there will be I am not a robot soon and this concept might just get old/boring by then even if they were the first ones to come up with it. I am surprised though, is SKJ that popular? If the show has a really high budget wouldn't they have wanted to recruit someone even more popular.

I think the biggest problem is that this feels like Big. The heroin will fall in love with the robot but then at the end of the drama the robot will go away and the real son will come back right? So she doesn't get the guy? I just don't see this ending well.

Or the son dies and he takes his place as they see him becoming more human and having feelings etc(like Absolute Boyfriend theme),or they both run into the sunset while the son takes his place..Those would be like the three rutes jajja...

I would like to correct your comment as it will mislead people

1. Are You Human Too was first announced in March
https://www.soompi.com/2017/03/23/seo-kang-joon-possibly-take-lead-role-upcoming-kbs-drama-robots/
I'm Not A Robot was in July
http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/07/w-two-worlds-pd-returns-with-robot-rom-com/
Borg Mom was in August
https://www.soompi.com/2017/08/07/kwon-hyun-bin-produce-101-season-2-make-acting-debut-new-drama/

2. Are You Human Too was originally set to air in November but got postponed because it consider simultaneous airing in China like DOTS.

3. Are You Human Too is pre-produced and filming finished in November and I'm Not A Robot is still shooting.

It started the trend of robots in kdramaland and is attracting a lot of competitors because of its high budget. Seriously it's normal in Korea. It doesn't mean that the first one airing is the original one.

I'm assuming, with all the buzz, Netflix will probably also pick this up... Just don't know if it will be released in batch form after all the episodes have finished airing on KBS or if it will be released on Netflix simultaneously as it airs

Netflix doesn't normally pick up Big 3 shows, unless I'm mistaken, for simulcast. (Actually, does Netflix even have Big 3 shows in its library? 🤔) I know they have a contract with tvN, which is why shows like Smart Prison Living aren't getting picked up by the likes of Viki and DF. It's all so confusing now. It used to be so predictable what shows would get picked up and by whom.

I think Night Light was picked by Netflix too, they changed the title to White Night. This drama was from MBC.

And they also have Strongest Deliveryman now and that's KBS.

I've noticed that most jtbc shows end up on Netflix too.

I'm down for anything gong seungyeon is in, I loved her in circle. The premise sounds interesting, and I didn't know this has been in the works for 2 years! My excitement is through the roof. Please be good!!

Hmmmm does that mean she'll fall in love with the robot?? Is this going to be a love triangle with her, the robot and the human????

*fingers crossed that Netflix does not pick this show up*

It's so funny how each "season" there seems to be at least two shows running along the same theme line. Like is there a trending topic research team or something that we don't know about? I'm definitely curious about this one though--seems like they invested a lot into the visual effects and I've heard so much about the main actor although I've never watched any of his dramas. Hopefully it'll be a good watch from beginning to end!

SKJ is cute but the boy really needs to improve his acting. I always want to like him so I'm hoping he steps it up in this project, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

But not gonna lie, I hope either this or I'm Not a Robot are good. I've been digging AI lately, so even when its not real AI I'm interested,

For those asking if SKJ is really that famous, I can't say for sure what Koreans think of him as an actor but his face is literally everywhere here. He's the star of so many ad campaigns it's almost absurd lol. To be fair... he is very pretty to look at.

If this is in the work for two years, it only means that the other drama is the one copying it lol. But thankfully it won't air the same time, and team-kill each other like Hyde vs KMHM or Moon Lovers vs Moonlight. I'm intrigued by this, and hopefully SKJ performs up to par here.

idk, I sat through like 7-8 episodes of CITT recently, and I have to admit Seo Kang-joon was the only actor besides Kim Go-eun that didn't make me want to spork my eyes out. He has decent potential imo. I can't really say the same for Gong Seung-yeon.

Will check this out for Jo Jung-joo and the eternal hope that the people behind this will actually take advantage of preproduction.

Finally, there is someone who appreciate his acting in CITT. He is really decent, I don't know why everyone think he can't act? Well I'm not saying he is doing daesang worthy acting but everyone way too harsh on him haha

I know! I think his acting is decent in most of his roles and genuinely good in CITT. He and IU are two actors I’ve loved in one role and will therefore support forever ;) But seriously, I really don’t get all the hate; I think it’s unfounded.

I agree. If he is serious, he can take to a more challenging roles. I can see passion in his eyes. I totally buy almost all his emotion in CITT, and he is among a young star in that drama beside Kim Go Eun who are doing a very solid acting.

He's won a lot of acting awards for someone who "can't act" ---- I'm thinking there are other people who give him more credit. There were a lot of people who watched Cheese in the Trap that were so strongly for the main lead that they began to dislike Seo Kang Joo for playing a character who challenged the main lead.

A few here have mentioned that they don't like Seo Kang-joon or that he can't act, so that inspired me to make a comment. This young actor has won numerous awards for acting, although he hasn't yet been in a large number of productions. I thought he was great in Cunning Single Lady and Cheese in the Trap as well as What Happens to My Family and Splendid Politics. In Entourage, I believe he played the part quite well, even though I didn't care too much for the drama. I'm just not sure why so many people here want to bash him unless people are confusing the silly variety show he appeared on when he was just 20 or 21 as him being a serious actor. I am looking forward to seeing him in this new drama and I hope as people watch it they do so with open minds.
