Song Ji-hyo offered Absolute Boyfriend remake Rom-Com King

You know, with so many robot dramas on the way already, I’m not at all shocked that an adaptation of Absolute Boyfriend is going to be among them. It would be weirder not to have it at this point, even though I really do think we’ll be overrun with cyborgs in dramaland soon. There’s a new drama adaptation of the popular Japanese manga on the way called Rom-Com King (for some inexplicable reason), and an offer is out to Song Ji-hyo (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair) to headline.

The manga Absolute Boyfriend (Zettai Kareshi) was adapted into a Japanese drama in 2008 and a Taiwanese drama in 2012, and for a short time there were talks of a Korean version with Kim Haneul and TOP, though that fizzled pretty quickly. But the project has been brought back to life by writer Yang Hyuk-moon of Mirror of the Witch and PD Jung Jung-hwa of Flower Boy Next Door, and is potentially going to air on OCN later this year.

The original tells the story of a career woman who has always struggled with her love life. She ends up accidentally ordering a tailor-made perfect boyfriend AI robot who begins to develop human emotions, and they end up in a love triangle with her childhood friend who also falls for her.

Song Ji-hyo has been offered the leading role, and in the adaptation, the heroine will be a special makeup artist who ends up with a perfect boyfriend bot, and the third leg of the love triangle will be a top star.

Song Ji-hyo is great in romantic comedies and most recently starred in JTBC’s This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair, which really ran the gamut from hilarious to heartbreaking. I’m hoping that Rom-Com King will be a sensitive exploration of humanity at best, or at least a sweet romance that raises a few questions like I’m Not a Robot did. Fingers crossed for the rest of the casting to go well.

Rom-Com King is currently in consideration for OCN’s Monday-Tuesday romance block sometime this year.

Oh wow, I absolutely loved the manga, but I got the impression from it that the main character was a schoolgirl/someone much younger than a successful careerwoman? So I was surprised to see that she got offered the lead. (I'm not sure if I remember it wrongly because it's been many years) Or maybe it's the way shojo manga is drawn, everyone looks so young.

I watched the Taiwanese adaptation, too! And I love Ji-hyo, so fingers crossed that things go well.

You are right, in the manga she is 16. But I think they are marketing this to an older and larger viewership then if they kept it a teen rom-com. I personally prefer them aging the characters up rather then keep them as teenagers even though I also loved the manga (but never did finish reading it so never found out who she ended with).

The manga had some "adult" content that none of the previous drama adaptations has quite gone near, despite the fact that they both also aged up the characters.

I had to drop the TW drama despite my love of Jiro Wang. I couldn't get past potentially rape-y robots. Hopefully there will be less cringe in this one.

I'd like to believe that at the very least, a kdrama would treat that scene very differently, if not get rid of it altogether.

So you are all for glorifying Rape..be it by a robot or human?

Not in the slightest. I said I'd like to see that scene either portrayed in a different way, or gotten rid of, and the others agreed with me. I fail to see how that's "glorifying rape."

I'm not keen on the robot trend in dramaland, but I love Song Ji Hyo and would watch this just for her. ^^

Who would we want to see opposite her?
Top star - ?
AI Robot - Choi Tae Joon. Dunno why. I think they'd be cute on screen together. :)

I thought Choi Tae-joon too and didn't know why....but then a vague memory surfaced of watching a clip of him playing a robot in the web series 109 Strange Things.

Maybe it's called Rom-Com King because the robot learned "human emotions" by watching too many k-dramas. And the bot keeps acting out iconic drama scenes out of context.

!!!! You know who'd be perfect for such a zany role? Lee Yi-kyung (currently playing Jun-ki in Waikiki)

That would be hilarious! I can picture the bot on a motorbike, going too close past two random people who are standing in the street talking - trying to create a swoony moment. Or have him push envelopes of cash across the table!

Suddenly I need to see that! :-)) "Whether you are a human, a robot or an alien, I don't care..." :-p . But if the childhood friend is a top star, perhaps it will go in the direction of an actor who can't do rom-com until a robot helps him to get in touch with his emotions via jealousy; a bit like Lee Joon in Father is Strange...

he he.. haven't watched it.. tried to the one with Jun..but it was weird ep 1.. so dropped it...

personally i want to see him in something dark and intense to see if he can carry such roles or not... (not like i remember you.. it wasn't dark enough) .. maybe something like damon from vampire diaries..

witty, violent, intense, passionate, dark, moody

Oh yes! I believe Bogum can do it, and most of all he can pull off pale with guyliner accentuation.

1

You must not have seen I Remember You/Hello Monster yet. He's quite violent and dark in that.

1

@lollypip i mentioned it.. i have seen the one with jhang nara.. but he plays a dark character.. but emotions wise not so dark.. i mean he is still cute and bubbly and maintaining that facade..

want to see a real crazy him.. no boundaries.. no bar hold

0

Joo Ji Hoon is the Korean Damon/Klaus for me.

0

@zoeraindasherbenji princess hours guy? has he done something similar? or are you talking about his personality vibes?

WDH (rescue me) is probably the closest i can imagine who can really do such characters (and kim wo bin if required)..

ah..i do want to see bo gum's cute face going unapologetically crazy :D

0

@alasecond

First off, I love, love, love that you called him Princess Hours guy! =D

Imho, Shin was like a milder version of Klaus. Moody, vulnerable, intense, and passionate.. but not so driven by his moods and whims.
I mean, if Shin lived for as long as Klaus did and lived through similarly traumatic experiences as Klaus did.. He'd probably turn out the same way.

Perhaps his offscreen vibes and onscreen image have melded together so perfectly that I still think of him as perfect for vulnerable, moody, brat

I have not seen Rescue Me (it's on the to-watch list though!) and Kim Woo Bin's works.

I don't fault you for wanting to see PBG in such a role.. He is sooo versatile!

Have you seen Dong Ha in Suspicious Partner and Chief Kim? Dong Ha is seriously talented.

Omg, IM JU HWAN! Watch Im Ju Hwan in Oh My Ghostess, or even his Bride of the Water God scenes.. Im Ju Hwan nails this range. He can be charming in one sec and yet betray hints of vulnerability and darkness in the next.

0

@zoeraindasherbenji oh dong ha was amazing in SP.. chief kim i tried to watch but too ott.. so couldn't go beyond ep 1..

water god was bad.. but im jwan is good.. he was good in ghostess.. i liked him in uncontrollably fond too....but he is more of can be a villain or can be a good guy..

need something in between.. like hero but crazy hero.. :P .. like the female lead in mad dog.. she can do "heroine, but crazy heroine" :P ..

0

@alasecond

Like an anti-hero? I haven't watched Mad Dog either. Another one on the to-watch list.

Im Ju Hwan rarely gets lead roles in dramas.. I'd really love to see him play an anti-hero.. Bride of the Water God was horrible. Only watched up to ep 6. But whenever Im Ju Hwan was on the screen, he just shone.

Junho might also be capable of this vulnerable, charming, moodily violent role. Based on what I've seen of him from Chief Kim.

And I think Namgoong Min would be too. Not based on Chief Kim, but just because I believe in his skills.

Yeah, I know Chief Kim was kinda crazily OTT (I kinda loved the OTT parts) but it introduced me to sooo many awesome actors and actresses.

Kim Seon Ho is another talent.. but the thing with guys like Kim Seon Ho is that he looks so gentle.. You'd never believe that he was capable of such violence. Then again, PBG looks gentle too.

1

@zoeraindasherbenji oh junho would be perfect for such roles.. watch him in Just between lovers if you haven't

Namgoong is brilliant.. the range from serious villain in girl who can see smell to crazy villain in I remember you (was it) .. to crazy comedy in b'ful gongshim.. to chief kim..

that man is capable of anything.. but he is old :P

now i want a twilight version with Junho and the girl from just between lovers..

or give me harry met sally between these two..

or give me top gun with dongha..

and ofcourse if they teach park hae jin to kiss properly.. he can pretty much do all the roles i can fantasize about :P

0

@alasecond

JBL..... I generally tend to stay away from melodramas because they're just heartwrenching.. I know it's got good reviews but if there's no HEA, I swear I won't make it through the week.

0

@alasecond

Im Shi Wan can pull off a Korean Klaus too. I've just binge-watched a bunch of dramas he's in (Misaeng, The King Loves) and am now watching The Merciless where he plays a former prison inmate who joins the mafia.

His range is incredible! Really talented..

And Kim Jae Wook too. They just disappear into their roles. I stand in awe of these two.

1

Omg loved kimi wa petto. it was sexy in a weird way. bo gum doing all those scenes. aargghh. song ji hyo's noona heart might explode.

Also SJH as a special make-up artist? Why does that sound so contradictory? Though I guess she did learn a lot abt make-up in that Beauty Show she was doing! :D

Oh and can we see her Mong Ji Hyo/ space cadet persona to match the robot? 😂😂😂

I need an absolute robot boyfriend who watches dramas with me and knows when to bring me ramyun and beer. If he can help me sniff out all of those childhood friends who have become rich and handsome so I can meet with them to see who is my fated love. And I will just have to live happily ever after with both my robot boyfriend and human husband.

Maybe I will just tune in to this drama first, and see how it works out for Song Ji-hyo.

I'll probably pass as I'm not a fan of robots, through I remember 8 year old me being quite invested and hearbroken by the end of Terminator 2. But when it comes to kdrama I don't want to spend time on a romance that from the start seems doomed to be one sided.
I'm not a robot worked because ultimately both characters were human.

Of course he will, because there are no regular guys in Korea, just top stars and chaebols :D

Seriously though, I really love this story (the Taiwanese version with Jiro Wang was so cute), and I've been curious to see how Korea would adapt it. Casting Song Ji-hyo would be a great start! I nominate Kang Ha-neul or Taecyeon for the role of Night, either of them would be adorable :)

Excited for this, but I hope they don't change too much of the story. I remember enjoying the Taiwanese version (Jiro 😍). Back then, I hadn't stepped into Kdramaland yet and Gu Hye Sun was the first Korean actor/actress I had exposure to. Her acting in the TWdrama often seemed overexaggerated, probably to compensate for not being able to control how the dialogue was verbally expressed. Even though we already have a female lead, I was thinking she would be quite different if she could reprise the role in a remake using her native language. It would be so interesting.

I'm shocked. This is a drama has been talked about getting a remake for so long and never actually started production. The Japanese original Absolute Boyfriend is such a great drama. The kind you can watch many times. I just hope they do it correctly. When they remade the Japanese drama Hana Kimi it was truly bad and one I never bothered to finished.

송지효 is a great choice. She could really put her own spin on it but be similar to Saki Aibu as well. Hopefully it finally comes to be.

A tip to any one that wants to start to watch a Japanese drama coming from Korean dramas. Check out a drama called 99 Days with Superstar. A Japanese drama with Korean actress 김태희 (Kim Tae Hee). You can watch it on Crunchy Roll for free with ads.

Song Ji Hyo is an extremely talented actress. She should do very well in this. I know that in the Manga the girl is only 16, but I would point out that even in the Taiwanese version the girl is much older than that- and given the fairly adult themes in the story it makes more sense as well.
