Jang Hyuk up to play ex-boxer in MBC’s Bad Papa

What a busy, busy bee. Jang Hyuk (Greasy Melo) has already lined up his next show, titled Bad Papa, which makes the upcoming MBC drama his third television project this year. I’m always down for more Jang Hyuk, though, so you won’t hear me complaining anytime soon. The role calls for a great mix of action and drama that sounds like right up Jang Hyuk’s alley, too.

Jang Hyuk is up to play a former top boxer who lost all of his fame and wealth in a single moment, and now seeks to reclaim his life by starting anew in mixed martial arts. His character decides to become a bad person in order to be a good father, and will struggle to live up to his role as the head of his family. The ex-boxer will start to repair ties with his wife, played by Sohn Yeo-eun (Suits), and their daughter, portrayed by the young Shin Eun-soo (Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned).

Jang Hyuk’s and Sohn Yeo-eun’s characters are high school sweethearts who married young and had their daughter at 20 years old, and while she resents her husband’s abrupt fall from grace, she tries her best to be a good parent in front of her child. Bad Papa sounds like a heartwarming tearjerker of a family drama, with two parents struggling to be a decent mom and dad to their daughter, despite their flaws and what life throws their way.

Hopefully, the writing and directing will be able to do this story justice, and I’m cautiously optimistic to hear that PD Jin Chang-kyu, who co-directed Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, will be sitting in the director’s chair. Bad Papa is slated to follow Life or Death Romance, starring Lee Shi-young and Ji Hyun-woo, which puts its premiere sometime this fall on MBC.

One of the reasons why I was able to drop Wok of Love easily - because Oppa has new drama. Hopefully this one will be a good one!

I didn't know you dropped Wok! Maybe because of your profile pic I thought you were enjoying it... I follow recaps but I'm not interested in the story, sadly.

I hope this next project is good!

Maybe if I have time, I will binge watch it later. Sadly, despite of my profile pic, I also not interested in the story. 😕

No, Sera, we can't watch it, because our Oppa doesn't get the girl. We can only watch a drama where our Oppa gets the girl. 😁

Yes, it's one of the reasons. 😂 Besides nothing really interesting about the plot anyway. Well at least they have fun bts, so.. oppa might not really wasting his time lol.

If there is left one chance I got to be curious about for dramaland, there here is...

"Why on earth Jang Hyuk is like robotic high voltage actor-machina?" God not kiddin, I search & count kdramas per se since 2008-2018, Jang Hyuk has never stopped working. N sometimes he got 2 or even 3 dramas per year. HUAWHATT?

He wins by big margin even in this 10 years span there is always someone younger, fresher (ehm Jung Hae In), cuter, hotter (ehm Jang Ki Young), trendier, leaner (ehm Woo Do Hwan), and greek model look like (ehm, Lee Jong Suk, Ju Ji Hoon, Lee Min Ho), Jang Hyuk's career sails smoother than butter cream. Secret please Oppa?

Because he is a solid reliable actor and I honestly don’t think those guys you mentioned are much hotter than him lol, only younger.

It is not literal who is hotter vs hotter, is figurative speech where fresher newer face is always like a brand new arrival in store, everybody wants a piece of it to be the "it girl".

Remember Capt. Yoo Si Jin fever swept asia? Is it mean Song Joong Ki is hotter than Won Bin?

About solid reliable actor, thats unarguable. But, does it mean there is only Jang Hyuk in his age line/senior actor that got it all? Go Soo, Ji Sung, Jang Dong Gun, Ju Ji Hoon, Kang Dong Won (eventho he is chungmuro's tend more), All those actors I mention aren't less talented/less popular/influeced than Jang Hyuk, but he is the busiest of them all. All along has to compete with gazillion 3rd &4th generations of fresh blood model turn actors. Thats I called "secret recipe" right here.

Nowadays Jung Hae In, Woo Do Hwan, Jang Ki Young are people's talk in town. thats random pick. U can name long list way more hot oppa as u like since it isn't versus

Your comment gave me much food for thought.💡
Instead of being an easy ride Jang Hyuk's career was rather a bumpy journey. He practically built his career all over again a decade ago.

It's not like he is getting better or more offers than his counterparts but it's more like instead of being 'picky' he is making best use of all of the opportunities provided to him.

He is incomparable to both the 'it boys' and same age counterparts because he is not competing with them at all. He has his own working style.

He is not looking for big budget productions, star writer/director, popular female leads. So it's easier to cast him than others. Sometimes the stars are too big (specially the older) for their own good.

Won Bin who is considered an ideal man and he continues to reject offers even after 8 years of his last movie. But Jang Hyuk accepts many projects rejected by other actors multiple times. He even did a weekend drama recently.
Even if his work fails or gets criticized he never breaks his stride.

I think his secret recipie is his actual 'love' for his work combined with his 'adaptibility' and to degree his needs at the time.

I would love to write more but my 'comment' is already too long.😬

Understood! You meant hot as in trendy etc. In that case, Ghoulinthepajamas answer is more or less what I would’ve said. He is a workaholic and not super picky. He’ll take risks such as work with new actors, writers, PDs and sometimes take roles other actors reject (such as the one in Beautiful Mind, which unfortunately failed in ratings but I loved so much) So yeah I guess that’s the reason he gets casted on so many things, cause he is not super picky and once he accepts the role he treats it like its the most important role. I assume being easy going in combination with hard working works in his favor (not to mention talented and easy on the eyes) but like you said many other actors are talented and handsome, they are just probably not as workaholic.

1

@itsmedf & Ghoulinthepajamas

Yes, I think you are right on my alley. Right there. hehe.

"sometimes, actors are too big of their name for their own good"

And, you make me racks up my mind again, remind me about Cha Tae Hyun too, he said he always takes odd roles, trying new things, roles most actor reject n not really musk them up. Speedy scandal is one example. But CTH is scored big with Along With The Gods.

I do hope while Jang Hyuk is very chameleon and nonchalant and definitely super humble (weekend drama for him, what?) ,he will get a big hit in chungmuro to solidify his place in this industry. I know time will come for u Oppa..

1

@chanelboy loves jang ki young argh
Jang Hyuk initally used to be more of a movie actor and less of a drama actor. But things did not go well for him.

On the other hand CTH is mainly a movie actor and despite being talented he never left his niche. He has some limitations like he can't do intimate scenes on the screen. He is much more careful while selecting his work. But he also has other things to do.😃

JH and CTH are actually very close friends so maybe that is the reason that they have similiar working styles even though their career trajectories are different.

0

Because he is sincere and nonchalant. He said he will work non-stop till his last breath. He loves to work.
And depending upon character he can look all cute, hot, lean, handsome and even derp plus add his natural sexiness and piercing beautiful eyes combined with the screen presence.

No way Jang Hyuk could turn this down given his love of boxing. The premise sounds interesting. Now, I'm glad that Jang Hyuk doesn't have tons of airtime in Greasy Melo so he has a little time to rest.

Thanks, Tipsymocha, for wonderful news. Talk about the hardest-working man in Kdrama. First the revenge drama MONEY FLOWER, now fantasy food romance WOK OF LOVE... and up next, a touching tale that sounds like a cross between FAKE FAMILY SERVICE and the 2003 drama PUNCH with Joo Jin-mo and Shin Min-a.

One of the best parts of VOICE was Jang Hyuk's detective's infrequent interludes with his hospitalized son. In amidst all the murderous mayhem, it was a treat to behold their warmth. I'm having flashbacks to Lee Gun's mushiness before tragedy struck in FATED TO LOVE YOU. This won't be JH's first time playing a boxer. While I am allergic to pugilism, I anticipate his choreography with glee. Next best thing to a sageuk swordfight. Just long as his character doesn't end up like in the drama special OLD GOODBYE.

Scheming Prosecutor Kim as mom?! This ought to be good...

It's great to have you back, @tipsymocha!

Has the writer been announced yet? That's the first thing I look for these days before getting my hopes up about a drama. The title makes me think of Bad Family, an oldie-but-goodie.

Hopefully he'll be a bad papa with a heart of gold. I'm loving seeing him express his softer side in Greasy Melo.

This plot reminds me of the Bollywood movie, Sultan. The male lead, however, is a wrestler (traditional Indian wrestling) who takes up Mixed Martial Arts.

I am so excited about this. Hot Papa sounds like the perfect vehicle for my Jang Hyuk. I was very very sad that he was relegated to supporting actor in Greasy Melo, and didn't watch it beyond episode 1 because of that, but I did watch that kiss scene several times in Greasy Melo because it was so awesome! Only thing that worries me is he's a boxer, please drama, don't kill my Jang Hyuk with a lethal punch to the head in the final episode.

Beanies, breaking news here. I will be cameoing as Jang Hyuk's boxer shorts in Bad Papa. I would have to spend the entire drama drenched in Jang Hyuk's sweat. Good thing I have a lot of experience, because I spent an eternity in the Goblin's Underpants, and honed my Holding My Breath skills in there. Wish me luck, guys.
