Jang Hyuk, Jung Ryeo-won, Junho to star in SBS’s Greasy Melo

The writer of Jealousy Incarnate, Miss Korea, and Pasta is back! Writer Seo Sook-hyang, known for quirky romantic comedies and hilarious ensembles, is penning a new series for SBS called Greasy Melo (melo as in melodrama), and actors Jang Hyuk (Money Flower), Jung Ryeo-won (Witch’s Court), and Lee Junho (Just Between Lovers) have signed on to headline.

The series will take place in a Chinese restaurant, which I guess makes it the jajangmyun counterpart to Pasta. It’s about a chef who goes from being a star chef one day to the cook at a failing neighborhood Chinese restaurant the next, and will tell stories of love and survival through food. As expected from this writer, the world will be full of colorful characters:

Jung Ryeo-won has been cast to play a chaebol heiress whose name, Dan Sae-woo, means “sweet shrimp.” She lives a life of privilege and leisure—she accepted no gifts on her wedding day because her father gave her a check for 300 million won, and she enjoys horseback riding and fencing. Her greatest moment in life happens to coincide with a random bowl of jajangmyun, which leads her to undergo a big change and begin a new life.

Jang Hyuk will play a loan shark gangster who’s served his time in prison, and somehow ends up running a Chinese restaurant. He’s an intimidating character but he’s also overflowing with humanity, and we’ll get to see everything from action to romance to comedy in the role.

And as far as I can tell, Junho will play the main character, though I don’t know if he’ll be top-billed. He’ll play the talented chef once known as “Hands of Bond” who falls from stardom and ends up the head chef of the neighborhood Hungry Wok. What a name.

I’m expecting a cross between Strongest Deliveryman and Pasta, but the thing to really look forward to is this writer’s hilarious dialogue and inventive situational comedy. Jealousy Incarnate is still one of my favorite dramas of recent years, so I’m excited for whatever antics we get in this new workplace with this new ensemble. All three of these actors have proven their comedic chops (and obviously their dramatic chops too—that goes without saying), so the crazier the characters, the better!

Greasy Melo is scheduled to air on Mondays and Tuesdays in May, following Should We Kiss First. I would advise putting jajangmyun delivery on speed dial (if you’re lucky), or stocking up on the instant kind before watching this drama. I know a food porn trap when I see one.

Watch his old drama The successful story of a bright girl that's his first drama with Jang Nara then they got reunited in Fated to love you. The only problem with FTLY is if you watched the taiwanese drama then there's a possibility that you compare them. But you can say that Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara's chemistry is still there.

3

Required fields are marked *

JH's character was over the top in the Korean version. Didn't understand it until I watched the Taiwanese version.

I think that they were aiming to parody some of the more ridiculous things in it (in fashion, hindsight is 20-20). Like the secretary's hair flip. Then the second lead's braids (LOL). Also, the secretary's silly mannerisms and laugh.

Still, it was a good show on its own merits.

Required fields are marked *

My question exactly! I love the set up. I love Jung Ryeo Won. I love Junho. But I'm not fond of Jang Hyuk. Because he's so LOUD with portrayal of characters, I think people either really love him, or don't at all. Sadly, I'm with the latter.

On the other hand, the role of gangster seems to fit him perfectly. So I remain hopeful.

More like he was loud in some of his dramas where he also suffered from bad direction, writing and low quality productions. Otherwise he is sublime. He is typecasted as angry badass guy so it has become sort of repetitive. In real life he is very sweet gentle cheerful but reserved. Far from gangster he is like an approachable guy next door.

4

I wonder if people who think he is so 'LOUD' in his dramas watched Money Flower - excellent show- where I even missed his signature laughter which I didn't like before.

He was in some really bad dramas. No matter how good an actor is he needs assistance to shine. Why do people forget his many great dramas and performance and remeber only bad one. Is it because he always plays bad boys?

Ha you should watch Jang Hyuk in 'Beautiful Mind' or 'Money Flower', completely nuance performances.

I did watch Money Flower but had to give up and I don´t really know what it is that feels off with him, his acting style feels unpleasant and a little mad.

1

Required fields are marked *

I think his style is better suited for movies than the dramas. He is able to portray complicated emotions with such ease. Movie directors can use him well. He will be great. But let's not forget it's also about the type of roles he is given. He hardly played a likable character with whom audience can emphatize.
He never played a normal role. Let's see what happens with this new role. I believe in him. He will be great here.

2

Just curious.. Which and how many dramas of Jang Hyuk have you watched to judge him that he is LOUD?

Besides, there are times second leads have more interesting roles except that in romance drama, usually first lead will get the female lead. LOL.

I think we will get some love triangle here as well. Well, can we just add one awesome second female lead so all just get their own lovelines. LOL.

Required fields are marked *

Thanks, I’m in the mood for a rom/com so I’ll give it another try while waiting for Greasy Melo to air.

Jealousy Incarnate was soooo addictive. What made it special was the OTP of course, but also all the side characters. I loved the two mothers for example, they were wonderful frenemies who had the same taste in everything - including men.

I'd never seen to many relationship triangles in a single series and it made the drama really rich and gripping through to the final episode (yes, after you made it through the first three or four).

That's what I'm hoping from this new one too, the restaurant can be such a perfect setting for lots of interesting stories.

4

Jaealousy Incarnate is one of the best and well-written drama. I enjoy and love it. Gong Hyo Jin and Ju Jung Seok chemistry and the way they act is so entertaining, You have to watch it. It's in my list of recommended dramas. You won't get it for the 1st 2 episodes but as you watch it you will get to the point that you will tell yourself "oh i've got it now" and you will start to love it even their lines are good.

@ Giegie, I couldn't stick with Miss Korea and think Pasta is repetitive, so . . . 😹

1

I’ll check out MS and see if I’ll like it...I adore Jo Jung-suk though I’ll probably go with JI first ;)

5

I have high hopes; even in Jealousy Incarnate there was no terminal-illness plot. Which is also a very good thing; I don't know whether this constant cancer = death sentence is actually helpful for patients over there...

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Trust this writer. She does not go for the typical tropes. No bitchy second lead ever, no makjang, no idiocy. I am confident her idea of melo is not what we are used to. I have to say how surprised I am at how popular she seems to be on this thread. When Miss Korea came out hardly anyone watched it, yet it was one of the most heart-warming dramas out there.

I think there is. And I am not going to lie, there are slow parts. Just keep in mind that this is rather a slice-of-life drama, and one that is also character driven, but the characters are great and they act sensibly. And I love the nostalgic vibe it gives.

2

@kiara Well, I'm afraid it isn't easy to be an OWHC member. She could be an ordinary HC (Humanity Club) member though. The catch is the Overflowing pre-requisite, and that's why membership of the OWHC currently stands at two: me and my Jang Hyuk.

Regardless, I'm down for a good story with good characterisation, and all three actors have proven their skills at bringing their roles to life. I prayed that Junho would do a comedy romcom after JBL. Ask and ye shall receive! He's making smart decisions in his drama choices--not getting cornered into one type of character.

I love Jang Hyuk even when he's yelling and being ridiculous. I can already sense the chemistry between him and Junho. Those two will try and outdo each other at every turn and it will be HILARIOUS. I think Junho is one of the few young actors who can steal a scene from Jang Hyuk.

I haven't seen the lady in anything, but the comments make me think she'll be great.

And we only have to wait till May! YES.

This makes me so happy. 🤩

Let me count the ways:
1. It's like a happy romcom oasis 🌴 sprung suddenly up in a cop/legal/melo/adultery desert.😞
2. Have always loved, loved, loved JH.😍
3. Don't know much about JRW but that was a strong endorsement. I'm in.👍
4. Junho is my current kdrama obsession. 💗. Just started watching JBL and omo. What a great show! I didn't recognize him as the same actor that was in Chief Kim. ...He does an amazing job of crafting his characters, so each feels like a unique, whole human being. What a talented young man he is. (Was already starting to get sad that when I finish the show it might be a while before he's in a new project.) *💃*.
5. The setup sounds awesome.🥡🍻
6. The show starts in May!⏰

I'm watching "Money Flower" right now, and am totally loving Jang Hyuk in it! I also loved Jealousy Incarnate...so this might be something I'll check out!

Ah!!! I am so so so IN!! Jealousy Incarnate is one of my all time favourite dramas! I would love to see another masterpiece from the same writer! My foray into Kdramas started with Fated to Love You and Jang Hyuk may have portrayed a crazy dude but he helped me pave my way into the wonderful world of K drama land. I was blown away by Junho's electric performance in Just Between Lovers - which I am currently binge watching! I did not necessarily like JRW character in MLSamSoon, but it all had to do with writing and directing not the actual actress. Bring it on May 2018!

I'm ready for this potential noona romance! Although the real seller here is the potential bromance between Junho and Janghyuk lbr. Junho has great chemistry with his sparring partners if Chief Kim and Twenty are anything to go by. The romance can go any which direction, but this bromance better be happening!
