Name That Drama: In which death starts something

Ready for another round of drama-sleuthing? Help out your fellow Beanies or use this form to send in your own questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Name that recap

    Hi Beanies, please help me find a drama that I haven’t watched but only read recaps on Dramabeans. I only remember there is a running joke that a character says some lines with the same sentence structure like the chorus of the song Some by Soyou and Junggigo. Thanks a lot Beanies.

  2. Go go power siblings

    Hello fellow Beanies, I have a drama that I watched mid 2000s. It was about this girl who had 4-5 other siblings who were all adopted, so she was the only biological child. One day her parents died from a car crash. She decides to adopt her siblings so they don’t get separated (there was even a baby). It turns out she was not her father’s real child. Her mother was pregnant with another man, a chaebol whose family didn’t approve of her, when they got together. Now her rich grandfather was out to look for her even though he’s been friends with their family. To make this world even smaller, the main guy is like a distant relative who wants her grandfather’s fortune. But he was nice enough to let them live in his house. I’m not sure if it was this drama but all the siblings names were colors so there was one that was pal-gang. Thanks in advance for all the help!

  3. Making amends

    I watched part of this drama and was somehow reminded of it. It came out sometime in the last five years. The male lead was a rich guy who was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and was somehow involved in a poor girl’s death (I think she drowned), and he decides that before he dies he wants to make amends to the poor girl’s sister.

  4. The power of love (and surgery)

    I’m looking for a drama with a country girl that “in the opinion” is ugly and girl #2 that is beautiful gets into an accident and into a coma. The girl #2’s fiance finds the country girl and has her go through plastic surgery to look like girl #2 because they have similar facial features. Please help me I can’t find it anywhere and I miss it!

  5. You can’t cheat death

    I remember that Sohn Hyun-joo played in this movie. But the movie’s name isn’t in the list of his movies. His wife cheats on him with her partner teacher in a high school or university. But the husband found the place where they meet and there are their pictures and his wife’s toothbrush in this room. Finally, he killed his wife. Could you please write the name of this movie?

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

I thought this structure of this drama was different as the main storyline was a rom/com while the secondary storyline was a melodrama. I recommend anyone watching this drama for the first time to just fast forward through the secondary storyline as I found it unpleasant to watch. However, I did like the main storyline.

Completely agree! The main rom-com storyline and the baby scenes were great, the rest of it not so much. Esp. the witchy, screechy Second Female Lead, which was the norm for dramas of that time was just unbearable.

I agree with @kddrma098! The number 2 is Stars Falling From the Sky! I loved this drama with the little sleeping in the ML's bed :p

The 4 sounds like a TW drama Substitute Princess with Chris Wu.

@kurama,
Yes! Little brother Pa Rang [blue] who sleepwalks in his footie pajamas and curls up under the covers at the foot of the bed defrosts the heart of the lawyer -- and steals the show. He's like a hea(r)t-seeking missile. What a cutie.

I’d just rewatched it a couple of months ago!! The kids were adorable. The nephew was so so earnest.
BUT it had one of the most deluded and demented 2nd FL!!!

@madkdr,
Mercifully, I have forgotten the 2nd female lead in STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY. My eyeballs were glued to Kim Ji-hoon and Shin Dong-wook -- and the kiddies -- the whole time. ;-) Among the vintage dramas I watched this year, DELIGHTFUL GIRL CHOON HYANG and MY LOVE PATZZI had heinously awful 2nd FLs, although in the latter, the female protagonist played by Jang Na-ra was also a piece of work.

#2 is PICK UP THE STARS / STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY. Each of the kid's names is a color (so the family is a literal rainbow). Kim Ji-hoon and Shin Dong-wook play brothers.

#4 sounds similar to Mask but I think there’s another drama that matches it more closely...

Only in Mask there is no surgery, they are identical from the beginning.

Yes it is! I watched the drama, though it was quite awful. You know Taiwanese dramas - makjang and cheesy rom-coms are the most common ones.

In this series, the title protagonist Jin Da-hua (Nikki Hsieh) is an ugly duckling who is the daughter of a provision shop owner, and is best friends with Lin Guan-jun (James Wen). Ouyang "Teddy" Tai (Chris Wu) is the CEO of a company who had just wed Du Liang-yan (also played by Nikki Hsieh) and they go on a hiking trip for their honeymoon. But unfortunately Liang-yan is involved in a fatal accident and is hospitalized, leading Ouyang Tai to recruit Da-hua as her substitute. So, she undergoes plastic surgery. But when Liang-yan succumbs to her injuires, Da-hua is forced to put on the Liang-yan disguise forever while dealing with how her family and friends reactions when she ultimately tells them she is actually Da-hua.

The series spans 21 or 32 episodes (depending on the runtime version you watch), and if you watch it, do keep a look out for (obviously) Chris Wu's performance, because he's such a scene stealer.

At one point he gives a speech that's entirely song lyrics. But I can't remember which song it was.

OH THAT! Yes, I remember that. It was a song by G.O.D? If I'm not mistaken.

I looked it up. G.O.D's One Candle, ep 21-22. Don't know if this is what the poster means though.

I also loved that drama. I loved how the female lead was this immature, frivolous girl, but then stepped up to the plate to be the mom to her many siblings. Learned about filling up on supermarket samples. I don't think the main guy wanted the grandpa's fortune. I think he was expected to marry the grandpa's granddaughter (the legitimate granddaughter who was the 2nd female lead). Feel free to shorten the series by skipping all the 2nd female lead scenes. She was terrible.

I agree completely. The main storyline seemed like a rom/com, while the secondary storyline was a melodrama. I liked the main storyline but didn't enjoy the secondary storyline involving the second female lead at all.

I don’t know answers to any of the dramas but I just want to say #4 sounds... insane. I doubt I could root for a main lead if he forced a heroine to go through the surgery to look like his dead fiancée. Yucky!

Actually, Chris Wu (who hired the heroine to pretend to be his fiance) was the second male lead in this drama. I disliked the male lead (James Wen) as he was way too immature and wasn't too fond of the female lead either (she was always a pale imitation of the fiance). However, Chris Wu's character was great and I ended up watching the drama solely for him. Also, the heroine wasn't "forced" to have surgery but did so willingly (a case of the ugly duckling being turned into a swan) and at the time of the surgery the fiance wasn't dead but in a coma where Chris Wu's character expected her to recover (he was truly in love with his fiance).

Because so many people loved Chris Wu's character, I believe the ending of the drama was changed since few wanted the heroine to end up with the loser of a hero (James Wen's character). I thought the ending was a cop out as it attempted to save James Wen from humiliation (losing his male lead status to the second male lead) while still giving Chris Wu's character a happy ending.

Could #1 be Hogu’s Love? I know they quoted “Some” at least a couple of times:

No 1 is While You Were Sleeping. LJS frequently borrowed his colleague’s car, who joked his car feels like his car, seems like his car but isn’t to the tune of the “Some”. It pops up a few other times in the drama too.

Number 4 sounds really similar to Bride of the Century with Lee Hong Ki, except he as the fiancé didn’t know the girl was switched.
