Hotel Del Luna Ep 1 (a short First Impressions):-

The direction of this show is, quite simply, bad. It’s also not helping our main actors overcome their flaws – IU lacks the gravitas to pull of her character perfectly, her expressions coming off awkwardly quite a bit of times, & Yeo Jin Goo, while a great actor (I add this because people seem to criticize his acting prowess a lot, much to my bafflement), feels like he is playacting at being an adult by wearing his father’s suit, or at least one that he begged his father to buy for him just for the purpose. If that’s exactly how his character is supposed to be, a naïve young boy who pretends to be more mature than he really is, then hats off to him. While he does seem to kind of get into the groove as the episode progresses, IU’s disconnect with the character is harder to ignore, seeing how she is the central character of this story.

Why do people go out of their way to criticise Yeo Jin Goo? I don’t get it. He’s an amazing actor.

It seems to be a trend lately, doesn’t it? But also, I see where they’re coming from. I’m not impressed with his comedy, but I don’t think he’s doing terribly. IU outshines him, but the show is centered around her. I can’t blame him for that. But I also disagree that she has a disconnect with her character. I don’t see that at all.

I feel bad for him honestly. He’s a veteran but also a very very young actor. He can easily shine his way, all the way, to Chungmoru by picking melos and dark roles. But at his age he shouldn’t have to bear that mental burden on every project. I’m all for attempting comedy to balance his heavy roles, even if he isn’t great at it yet. Albeit not great but he in any role he will beat other actors of his age.

To be honest, he is in no way amazing actor, to me at least, he is definitely good and does not make obvious mistakes and he can emote.
But he does not bring any special charm to his characters either, not at all in Hotel del luna, he looks superbly mis-cast here…

I haven’t seen most of Yeo Jin-goo’s work so I don’t have much of an opinion about his acting ability, but I think having so many dramas air this year probably didn’t do him any favors, especially since comedy isn’t his forte. I did watch The Crowned Clown and thought his turn as the King was great but his Clown just okay. I saw shades of his Clown in the first two episodes of Hotel Del Luna, which again, I think is a downside of doing three dramas in a year.
