Korean Theater/Musicals

Thumbs up for Radio Star
by | November 10, 2008 | 4 Comments
The 2006 Lee Jun-ik-directed film Radio Star has been adapted for the musical stage, and stars an old-school kpop star sixteen years after his debut: Kim Won-jun, who enjoyed most of his popularity in the ’90s. The film starred Park Joong-hoon (Heaven’s Soldiers) as a has-been pop singer, with Ahn Sung-ki (May 18) as his... More »

Song Chang-eui (Boys Don’t Cry) poses with pop singer Bada and musical actress Yoon Gong-joo (really, parents, gong-joo?) as they promote their new musical, the adaptation of sleeper hit 200 Pound Beauty. The 29-year-old Song plays a PD main character, while Bada and Yoon alternate in the lead female role originated by Kim Ah-joong. The... More »

Movie veteran, theater newb

(My beloved) Lee Jung-jae‘s been in show biz for fifteen years now, starring in films like Typhoon, Oh Brothers and Il Mare, but he’s just now taking his first foray into theater. In December, he takes the titular role in Hamlet (the play, not the musical version). The play will perform at his own alma... More »

Hello again, Franceska
by | September 27, 2008 | 6 Comments
Remember the vampire sitcom Hello Franceska? The quirky three-season series that was made by Soulmate director Noh Do-chul starring Jung Ryeo-won, Lee Kyeon, and, later, Hyun Young? Well, now it’s been adapted for the musical stage, starring Choi Jung-won as Franceska (the musical actress, not the Kingdom of Wind star), which was played by Shim... More »

To be or not to be Lee Ji-hoon
by | September 20, 2008 | 13 Comments
Singer and actor Lee Ji-hoon (You’re My Destiny, Hello Miss) is wrapping up his role of the Prince of Denmark in the musical production of Hamlet and had a few thoughts on the experience playing one of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters. And while I’d like to make some thoughtful commentary on his taking the role... More »

A return to Xanadu
by | September 8, 2008 | 11 Comments
Super Junior members Heechul and Kangin are taking the lead roles in the camp musical classic Xanadu (“We are in Xanaduuu~!”) in their musical-theater debuts. They put on a performance at the press rehearsal (i.e., dress rehearsal open to press) on September 8 with the rest of their castmates. However, audiences won’t be seeing both... More »

Taking to a different stage
by | September 5, 2008 | 8 Comments
I love Horan. Not only is she a great singer for electronica group Clazziquai as well as indie band Ibadi (not the strongest vocals, but lovely all the same), she’s smart and literate (she put out a collection of essays, served as book columnist for a magazine, and hosted an educational book program on television).... Coffee Prince‘s scene-stealing “Harim,” or actor Kim Dong-wook, is taking the stage for his musical debut in the lead role of frank and straightforward “Alex” in the production of On Air: Season 2. On Air: Season 2 is described as a “cheerful romantic musical” that takes place at a radio station, centering around a younger... More »

Get the fat suit ready for Bada
by | August 17, 2008 | 10 Comments
While news is quiet of the 200 Pound Beauty sequel, plans are under way for a musical version, starring SES lead singer Bada. (The film sequel will be losing the sleeper hit’s original plastic-beauty Hana, star Kim Ah-joong, who opted not to return to the franchise in favor of other projects now that she’s catapulted... But that’s not a Polaroid camera…
by | June 30, 2008 | 6 Comments
The “romantic musical” Polaroid (first mentioned here as Andy’s second stage role) starring former Miss Korea and classical musician Honey Lee (so pretty) held its dress rehearsal–cum–press conference on June 30, the day before its official July 1 premiere. The project is directed by Sung Jae-joon and written by Won Mi-sol, who also produced last... More »
