Korean Theater/Musicals

Joo Ji-hoon is Don Juan
by | January 6, 2009 | 18 Comments
Joo Ji-hoon (Devil, Goong) is debuting on the musical stage in a production of Don Juan. Last seen in the movie Antique Bakery, the 27-year-old Joo promises to show a “whole new side of me that hasn’t been seen in dramas or movies.” That shouldn’t be hard, since we’ve never seen him sing or dance... Theatrical adaptation announced for A Star’s Lover
by | December 17, 2008 | 4 Comments
This seems… fast. I know there are a lot of expectations for SBS’s new drama A Star’s Lover, what with its big-name leads (Choi Ji-woo, Yoo Ji-tae) and high production values. But it’s only just started airing, and its ratings have been modest, at that (8.8% and 9.5% for episodes 1 and 2, respectively). Still,... More »

The 2006 Lee Jun-ik-directed film Radio Star has been adapted for the musical stage, and stars an old-school kpop star sixteen years after his debut: Kim Won-jun, who enjoyed most of his popularity in the ’90s. The film starred Park Joong-hoon (Heaven’s Soldiers) as a has-been pop singer, with Ahn Sung-ki (May 18) as his... More »

(My beloved) Lee Jung-jae‘s been in show biz for fifteen years now, starring in films like Typhoon, Oh Brothers and Il Mare, but he’s just now taking his first foray into theater. In December, he takes the titular role in Hamlet (the play, not the musical version). The play will perform at his own alma... More »

Remember the vampire sitcom Hello Franceska? The quirky three-season series that was made by Soulmate director Noh Do-chul starring Jung Ryeo-won, Lee Kyeon, and, later, Hyun Young? Well, now it’s been adapted for the musical stage, starring Choi Jung-won as Franceska (the musical actress, not the Kingdom of Wind star), which was played by Shim... More »

To be or not to be Lee Ji-hoon
by | September 20, 2008 | 13 Comments
Singer and actor Lee Ji-hoon (You’re My Destiny, Hello Miss) is wrapping up his role of the Prince of Denmark in the musical production of Hamlet and had a few thoughts on the experience playing one of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters. And while I’d like to make some thoughtful commentary on his taking the role... More »
