The weeks just fly by. Every Friday, I have to double- or triple-check to make sure it’s actually Friday before posting the Open Thread. One of these days, I’m thinking you’ll open this site and find an Open Thread on a Thursday, or maybe Wednesday if it’s been a bad week. Trust.

@ 46 Dele
Yeah. I think that's the thing that's getting me the most about Triple. It could end either way and make sense BUT I WANT IT TO END MY WAY!! :( If they do a time jump, I really wonder at how it'll play out. I don't know if it would fit right in the drama. I mean if they go the Haru/Hwal way, then the time jump would be the best scenario but . . . I don't know. I'm apprehensive about it. A time jump is a hard thing to do well and a lot of dramas mess it up.

@ 51 sari

I think I'm gonna go through Nodame withdrawal and I'm so tempted to read the manga BUT I don't feel like spending $8 to read a book that I can finish in 5 minutes (seriously, I can read a manga in 5-10 minutes flat) and downloading them is a pain in the butt because I can only read them on a computer (unless I print them all out, which is an option). I really need to find a place that sells manga for cheap. Can you give me a heads up? Are Nodame and Chiaki together in the manga?

@43 B020 - ya I wasn't a big MC Mong fan either. Not that I had anything against him but just was never exposed to his music. But then i heard about the song he wrote for jin shil and just had to take a listen.. looooove now :) can't stop listening to that song. and also the one he collabed with Navi - I adore her voice too and can't wait till she comes out with her own album. She's done some awesome collabs with Tablo and a couple of the 2PM boys. BTW, love love love Epik High as well (tee hee. see what I did there, incorporating one of their songs. ha. i'm a dork). Saw them when they performed in LA this past May and met them at their meet and greet as well. Nice guys :) Drunken Tiger always has good stuff. The new album is great!! Try Dynamic Duo - they're pretty good!

best wishes for a speedy recovery for your dad. i hear beer's good for the keeping the arteries clear! LOL!

@ lovenyc52

i have Jai Rao--a thai drama--on my mp4 and i play it over and over just to hear Ken Teeradeth's voice. and i don't even understand 95% of what they're saying!!! the lame-ass things we do for obsessions!

i'll have to catch that MC Mong song off seoulbeats... i read the article, but didn't listen to the song yet. i don't know if i can stand to hear it today, cuz i've already got a headache. if i cry anymore, i think my head might just explode!

@ 36 B020

we're a bunch of fraidy cats, so i doubt i'll make the trek up Sears Tower cuz i won't be able to get down w/o jumping off in fright!!
u got any recommendations for Vietnamese or Chinese restaurants in Chinatown? we always go to Trinh Bin (sp?) on Argyle, so i'm looking for something different.
for Korean food, i'll stick to the lilo restaurant in town here, as it's the absolute best i've had anywhere!!!!

@44, mishane

I am definitely NOT a fan of open-endings either. I feel cheated because I've invested so much time and effort only to have no resolution. WTH, you know?? I will be really upset if that happens with Triple!

I'm beginning to wonder if there will even be a kiss. At this point I'd be happy with a hug, because there have been plenty of opportunities for some sort of physical overture from Hwal, but nothing ever happens other than a rare hand-holding or head-patting moment. Which, just as you stated, begs the question...how does he really feel about her? I guess this is what keeps me tuning in so anxiously, the hope for some grand gesture on Hwal's part that leaves us no doubt as to what he's feeling.

it's a good thing it's web-sis, cuz i don't talk to my real-sis very often (too much family drama--i'd rather just watch the drama, not be in 'em). oh, it actually makes me feel better, cuz i didn't like myself for not sending money to a web-mom, but i can DEFINITELY turn down a sis. LOL!

@ sari

i couldn't get passed ep 3 on Vineyard Man, no matter how hard i tried to watch and re-watch.. so i don't know if it gets any better. but that the main guy isn't as *hot* as the other actors out there was hard for me to get passed. i'm shallow like that... i like to GAWK over my actors... if you do watch it, let me know how it goes!!!

Goong S--i just can't get into se7en. i have absolutely no desire to watch that... does it follow the same story line as Goong except it's a guy going into the palace instead of a girl?

gonna be back in Chicago area the Aug 8-9 for some Six Flags fun... may have to swing by the Korean festival... where's it at?

@Mishane...I definitely think if Hwal and Haru end up together it will be a sorta open ended drama that needs a time jump.

Like in the time jump(probably a 5 year one) Haru goes and does the ice skating thing in Canada and either she keep loving Hwal or she ends up with Poog-ho...hopefully the former Yes the latter is adorable but not for Haru:)

I could see it ending at a wedding for Hae Yoon and Sang Hee...where instead of him being the one to ask she asks him to marry her:)...Hyun Tae went to Canada with Su In and they end up together. Hwal is Hwal..maybe Haru and him have been exchanging letters or maybe no contact at all. They all are together for the wedding and it ends with Haru and Hwal talking about their relationship while looking at all the friends laughing an having fun...THE END.

Lol...we get to imagine what happens next. See although open endings suck they kind of give us the right to let our imaginations run wild and make our version of happily ever after.

What? Hey, for us people who live here in sunny So. California, we are so way behind. I did start watching 1) He who can't Married (or something like that), it got too boring for awhile so I switch to 2) Triple - that's okay but I was looking for something else to watch beside Triple. I found 3) City Hall - OMG, this is one awesome drama - you have to watch it (thank you Samsooki for doing a write up on this drama every week - I couldn't wait for your reviews so I have finished watching it - really good). So now I am watching Partner - really good and the chemistry between the two lawyers - really good. I want to go 4) Brilliant Legacy - should I start or wait (hmmm).

I am looking forward to a really nice weekend and have a good one. I might venture out to the beach and watch the pro surfing in my city. Surf UP!!!

@ 56 lb_tmi: if you go to Chinatown, you might want to try Phoenix or Joy Yee's. They are the more sanitary and reputable ones in Chinatown. True, they are a bit more westernized or touristy, but they are the only ones that have not been shut down for sanitary violations. Joy Yees has Vietmanese and Chinese as well as a few Korean & Thai dishes. Their Chinese and Vietmanese dishes are better than the Korean & Thai. And leave room for the monster drinks!

@49 Dele: I've not tried Nells, but now I will:-) Also, could you PM me - I'd really like to chat about the program you're using to over to Seoul. I think you talked about it on another open thread but I missed it. I've been debating about quitting the stable paycheck job and go over and teach english at the summer camps My email is believer020@yahoo.com. Thanks!!!

Also - what do you guys think about quitting a stable job(that I really don't like but can't find a job in my field of adversiting/marketing) vs. doing something adventurous and financially unstable like teaching abroad?

Question for anyone following Triple who doesn't need subs:

In ep 12, there's a scene between Hyun-tae and Hae-yoon in their office, maybe 20 minutes or so into the episode. It's just the two of them, and Hyun-tae is upset because Su-in just dropped Haru off at the house and tried to talk to him. During the conversation, Hae-yoon asks Hyun-tae a question and he answers with a smile but then breaks into tears.

I am DYING to know what was said in this conversation, can anyone summarize it for me? You can tell that Hyun-tae is holding it together as best he can, but then he just loses it. It's so sad; I'd love to rewatch it when I know exactly what they're saying.

Many thanks!

gah, I'm spending my wonderful (dreary, rainy, depressing) Friday morning/afternoon writing a five-hour practice-exam in preparation for one I'm writing in three weeks. I would hate my Friday mornings, but this Open Thread makes everything more pretty and enjoyable ^_^

@mishane and all other Shining Inheritance watchers, this drama is is addicting! I didn't realize I would be so obsessed with this. Otherwise, I wouldn't it had started it until *after* my huge exam which will decide my whole future. Bah, I spent all week downloading the episodes and going on marathons in my study 'breaks'. I've seen the Evil-'Sister'-and-(Step)mother-And-Co *so* many times (Country Princess, Secret, Glass Slippers, every-single-daily-drama-out-there, etc) but I hafta say, the whole Eun-Woo-storyline is making this drama so much more interesting. And I'm *enjoying* the cliches, instead of pounding my head against the keyboard and gouging out my eyes. I can't wait till this weekend's finale!

@lb_tmi and sari, I really enjoyed The Vineyard Man. I was initially put off my the main actor's looks too... I didn't find him cute or attractive at all. And YEH wasn't enough to make me watch it. I tried it again a few months later and I went on a marathon-streak in two days to finish it all up. Main Guy turns attractive in the eyes of the audience by halfway through. Suddenly his tanned-skin, country-bumpkin ways make you go, "awwww! so cute!" instead of just indifference. *HE* becomes the main attraction in this drama, not YEH! Definitely give it a try past the few first episodes. It's slow, sweet, and just cute ^_^

@ 58 lb_tmi

Goong S is much better IMO, regarding the storyline (javabeans did a recap on it). Goong (the original) was the drama that made me realize how much I hated the drama cliche of "cold hearted guy gets spunky girl" and while I enjoyed Goong as I watched it, after I finished it I kind of hated all the characters.

With Goong S, Se7en is this fun spunky guy who finds out that he is the heir to the throne and he has to deal with whether or not he's right for the position (and it deals with interesting issues such as whether or not blood line is important in ruling a country. Se7en is blood related to the throne but his rival isn't, but the rival is more cut out to be the Prince than he is).

The love story is SO MUCH BETTER in Goong S. In the palace Se7en meets his childhood friend and they bicker but they kind of fall in love at the same time and they have to deal with issues because she's his maid-servant and he's the Prince and will class-issues keep them apart?

(I hate names that have numbers in them BTW)

@60 Dele

Your scenarios sounds good actually.

Except in mine? I want Hyun Tae to fall off a cliff.

Sorry. I have no love for Hyun Tae's character. I absolutely detested him in the early episodes and he hasn't warmed up to me yet. The only time I actually enjoy him on screen is when he is interacting with Haru. The rest of the time I want to throw something sharp at him.

But the rest of your scenario sounds good. And plausible.

@ 62 B020

Re: quitting a stable job.

I have a pretty stable job right now and I'm 98% going overseas to teach English (as soon as my paperwork gets finished DAMMIT). But I'm also fresh out of college (well, a year out of college) and I'm the kind of person that craves traveling. And I'm DYING working this job, I feel like my soul is slowing getting sucked out of my body.

LOL HOW DO ASIANS EAT CHICKEN?

I ask because I just came back from lunch (only part of my job that I like, we get lunch catered almost every day. Today was Pollo Tropical so chicken goodness!!).

Well, I was sitting next to a coworker and I was eating my chicken with a fork and knife (it's roasted chicken, all right? I don't like getting my hands greasy, especially if I'm looking at my iPhone when I eat!).

She goes, "Damn! Why do all you Asians eat your chicken like that? All Asians eat their chicken like that! So weird."

. . . .

Really? I just didn't want to get my fingers greasy, I wasn't aware that it was a purely Asian thing to do. Then it got me curious.

To all the Asians here, HOW DO YOU EAT YOUR CHICKEN?

(If it's fried chicken, I eat with my fingers. I'll eat greasy chicken with my fingers too, it just matters on where I am and what I'm doing. At home yeah. At work? NO)

re: eating chicken--if i'm @ the office, i eat w/ a fork and knife and cut apart all the meat from the bone. if i'm at home, it's fingers all the way! i am only proper when the situation calls for proper... otherwise, i'm all about being finger-licking good!

re: leaving to teach overseas vs. staying at current job
if i were still me at the current age i am, not married w/ kids, i'd definitely go abroad and study or teach. there wouldn't be a hesitation in my mind to go and do it before the opportunity passes by.
however, because i'm where i am and who i'm with and what i have, i can't. i don't regret having my kids, just that if i coulda let everything happen later rather than sooner... i woulda... but that's what's great about surprises, rite?

random thought: i don't think i'd be a very good stay-at-home mom/housewife. i'd spend all my time on DB and watching dramas, my kids and husband would die of starvation!!! it's a good thing i work, so at least i'm making money while i'm on DB. LOL!!

Thank god for dramas, they're a lifesaver when you need a break from reality.

The only kdarmas I'm watching now are Brilliant Legacy, Queen Seon Duk and Jumong.

I am also following a few jdramas: Hancho, Boss, Tobosha, Rinjo, Maid Deka, and Ninkyo. A variety of detective and yakuza stories.

Have a great weekend everyone.

@70,

I'm not really representative of anybody.

When I was single and in law school, I had no money at all and I used to eat soup from a can with a spoon I would just lick clean and put back into the drawer (불상했든나...). When I had chicken on those rare days, I would just eat it with my bare hands because knives and forks are for pretty boys (꽃남자들).

Now that I am married, I eat at the table instead of over the sink or over a pizza box, I use things like spoons and forks and knives, and I chew my food instead of just swallowing. I even use napkins now. The price of civility is lack of freedom.

@70 mishane - I totally eat chicken with my hands if the situation doesn't call for me to be civilized haha. so at work it's a knife and fork and at home or at a bbq with friends, it's all hands ha :)

random question for those living in the LA area - have you guys heard of cirque berzerk in downtown? i think it's in chinatown area? not too sure..but some friends want to go tonite and i was wondering if anyone had heard reviews on it..good or bad? i have this ridiculous clown phobia and try to avoid circuses (is that the plural of circus? no idea)... but i dono if it's THAT kind of circus ha.

Thanks for the recommendation...I'll put Robbers on my list of dramas to watch (it really does keep on growing---especially since Dramafever has been adding dramas I've been wanting to see, but haven't gotten around to it ie Queen of Housewwives, Gourmet, and the one I'm really excited about All about Eve--I've been wanting to see it for ages!)

@MEIKO
My only issue with the focus is that you know the whole "camera lingering on to catch the hidden emotional turmoil" aspect---it doesn't happen that much on KHJ, but then again it may be b/c they are taking LDW and KHJ's relationship slow. Though I love the fact that Tae-jo is feeling something for Eun-ho....I really think LDW is pretty awesome as Lee Tae-jo (he is so much fun to watch on screen that I actually debated whether watching La Dolce Vita would be a good idea or not or at least rewatch My Girl)

@sari
I love Nodame Cantabile the manga as well. I actually read it first before watching the show. Though I stopped reading it b/c the author was on hiatus or something. As much as I loved the show, the manga is really really good, especially in terms of developing Chiaki/Nodame's relationship. But the movie is coming out this year?! Yay!

UGH I WANT TO DO A '9 ENDS 2 OUTS' REWATCH NOW. . .

@ mishane and the Goong S discussion:

I think Goong S is by far the more interesting story, but Goong was the better drama series in terms of entertainment and execution. I hated Prince Shin so I never warmed to Goong (the first half was really cute though), but I really liked the character progression of Goong S. (I wrote up why I thought so here: http://www.dramabeans.com/2007/12/the-year-in-review-part-4-the-rest-of-2007/ ) Ultimately I think Goong S failed, though, because of poor acting. If Goong S had employed better actors -- by which I mean replaced every single main cast member -- it could have been so much better. Sigh.

HORRID!!!! i ALMOST killed my friend who recommended it after watching. not a Rain fan to begin with, watched it, and still less of a Rain fan than when i started!!! i give the guy props.. he wipes his boogers and tears like no other i've seen before! the stupid guy in the glasses... so NOT even a reason why he should be a character in that drama. The burned chick, so NOT what you do when you're crazy in love with the guy who's life you kinda saved... all kinds of WRONG in that drama. even the ending... i mean, i liked how it ended, but not when it ended.. there was no closure for anyone else! i've seen that ending done so much better than that! why just sit there? in a world of cell phones and body guards and whatever, it just didn't work! argh. i'm mad just discussing how bad i didn't like it.

@ 86 javabeans

I agree with you. I was much more invested with the Goong S storyline and romantic plot but Goong did have better execution (even if I hated all the characters).

You don't think Se7en did good? I think he was a little shaky in the beginning but got better as the show progressed (although in some of the more emotional scenes, you could see that he was a bit of a newbie). Heo Yi Jae was not good and I'm pretty sure she only had like 3 expressions.

THAT SAID.

I think Joo Ji Hoon was horrible in Goong, acting wise (*cowers my head in fear of the Joo Ji Hoon fans*) and I don't think he's really improved. I've never been impressed by any of his roles. He strikes me as slightly wooden and I don't know if it's the character (I think a bit of it is the character but most of it is him). For example, in Mawang/The Devil, I thought he was horrible. I know the character was supposed to be cold and calculating but. . .all I got was block of wood.

Oh well, maybe while he's taking "time off", he can take more acting lessons and come back and wow us.

You are totally my soul-sister! The one year I took off after having 2 babies in 2 years, I started watching K-dramas cuz I was bored senseless, and finding myself annoyed at hubby when he got home and talked about what normally would be beyond boring legal issues he dealt with at work, but I missed it. Even boring monkey scribe legal work, missed it.

When I started watchig k-dramas to pass the time and delay the inevitable of going back to work (even missing work, it still sucks to think about going back to the daily grind), it became a pleasant diversion, and I quickly watched TONS of k-dramas. Even raiding my mom's treasure trove of early hallyu classics like Autumn in my Heart, Winter Sonata, Lovers in Paris, plus all the second wave trendies like Goong, Coffee Prince, My Girl, Delightful Girl Chun Hyung, MNIKSS etc.

Those of you who know my fervent love for all things City Hall in the comments section of the beyond awesome Samsooki CH recap, this last month as been famine in the ockoala household, children unwashed and unkempt, husband fuming at my adoration of CSW, vegatable garden untended, you know the drill when you fall in love with a drama (though I exaggerate, the ockoala babies are fully capable are washing and kempting themselves, they are koala babies after all, so they just attach themselves to my back whilst I watch CH and other dramas!)

Anyways, I work so I don't become too addicted to dramas, and also to tell hubby to lay off me, I have 2 "very important" jobs, mommy and lawyer, so I can watch as many dramas as I like and buy as many shoes as I like. Missed the Nordstrom sale this time around though.

I liked 9 Ends 2 Outs, but have never got around the finishing, don't know why, cuz I do like it.

Started Easy Fortune, Happy Life - completely underwhelmed at this point, main lead male is somewhat off, and I can't put my finger on it, he just isn't compelling, unlike Ethan Ruan in Fated to Love You (man can't act, looked good in his outfits, and was suitably cast - dare I say.....like a certain Hyun Bin in MNIKSS - omo, omo, do not throw eggs at me - recently saw a cosmo spread with Binnie, drool, gasp, appreciate male hotness). Will probably watch when it's over to fast forward through it.

Still haven't started Black and White - for those of you B&W ravers, why do you like it?

Sheepishly admitting that I watched.....Jamyunggo, though sporadically and fast forwarded through all the 2 evil queen scenes and anything between Hodong and Lahee, goodness, that is one stupid crown princess. Anyways, sad for the great looking and well-acting cast, but the story, pacing and direction were all over the place, and it was doomed from the start (bad production company). Plus, the central love story is just too depressing even if done right, so Seguek producers take heed....viewers want "fulfilling" love stories! Even if the ending is tragic (can I reference Hong Gil Dong? - don't want to spoil, but I loved that drama ending because the central love story was fulfilling ultimately, I felt completed after I watched it).

Nodame Cantible, okay, will loot my sister's comics and start again, when there is flame, there must be wind. Though for those who have viewed both - should I start with comics or the j-drama?

I think this is enough chattering from me now. Fun open thread comments from fellow kindred spirits today!

@46 Dele. I just finished Love Shuffle this week. And it was awesome!!! so incredibly awesome! you have to watch it!

@ mishane. i also want a guy friend like Hyung-tae!! i wish i can go back in time and make a guy childhood friend!

today was a bit depressing. Had an interview and it began with me trying to spit out my gum discreetly and not being successful at it- it kept getting stuck to my teeth! It was disgusting and farcical. The interviewer came upon me walking by the place 15 minutes before interview time- while I was looking like a gum-chewing, drowned (it was rainy and my umbrella broke), bedraggled orphan child. What horrid luck!

Oh man! You're really passionate about it!

I still love it though. I think it was because of the anticipation. We, the audience, knew that Rain's revenge against Shin Min Ah was futile (she wasn't the reason for his brothers attempted 'suicide') and it was delicious to see him falling in love with her and ALL I WAS WAITING FOR was the scene in which he found out about it and it TRULY did not disappoint. When he hears the voicemails of Shin Min Ah crying for his brother to take her back and he's so disgusted with himself and upset and. . .GAH IT'S JUST A TANGLED WEB OF EMOTIONS. And then he has to watch SMA care for his brother and he's torn between being jealous and being happy for his brother and 42098erwoiuwfjeiou20&*%()(*)&)^(^(&*)

And it has my most favorite scene in any drama/movie/tv EVER, where Rain is just laying outside his brothers hospital room and he's crying and hurt and upset because inside the room, SMA is crying over his brother (because Rain pushed her away and ruined her life) and he wishes she was crying over him instead but he knows it won't work because he's hurt her too much and he's just SO REGRETFUL AND GUILTY AND SEE REVENGE NEVER WORKS OUT!!!!

I'm getting all emotional just thinking about it. I'm so sorry that you don't like it (and sorry for bringing up memories of WHY you don't like it) but it just makes me all kerpuffly when I think about it.

I didn't "hate" A love to Kill, but I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be emotionally drained. Rain was better than I expected. (just a bit) He did pull off the scene when he was crying over his brother and snot was rolling down his face. so sad...

lb_tmi brings up a topic that I'm curious about.

What dramas have you watched and did not like? And your reasons?

Interestingly enough, mine are all really fan-popular dramas. I think it's because I heard so much about them and expected a lot more and was disappointed when they didn't deliver.

Anyways, mine are:

Goong
My Name Is Kim Sam Soon
Delightful Girl Choon Hyang
Hello My Teacher
Smiling Pasta
It Started With A Kiss (STABSTABSTABSTABSTAB)

@ ockoala

you are another long lost sister... for my shame *hangs head in disgust* i've been putting off going back to school for my post baccularate paralegal degree because 1--i can't part w/ my kids for any longer than i can stand them LOL! 2--i would have to study more than drama watching.. and at the moment, drama watching and having a steady income are more important (i've become greedy since i've started making money---as i was in school for so long, i finally got a real life and job!) 3--have a major life trip planned for this fall so i can't interrupt schooling for the trip, so i'm putting off the schooling until said trip is taken.
i just need a really good kick in the @ss to finally get things together to go...

i'm watching Black and White right now. i'm on ep 17. every ep has been a jaw dropper... twists and turns and events that are just unexpected.. expected but changed... just amazing. the acting is SUPERB! there's not one actor/actress that isn't portraying their role to perfection. the eye candy is an added bonus. i am LOVING every single moment of this drama. it is definitely a must see!

It's Friday? Man, my summer schedule is sooooo off.

I have about three more weeks until I head back to school. I can't decide if I'm excited or terrified--on the one hand, I'll be a senior, and I have enough extra credits that I can take only three classes each semester instead of four, plus I get to see all of my friends; on the other, this means I'll soon be out in the real world, away from my parents money and support.

Hrmmmm..

I'm getting caught up on Triple at the moment (currently watching episode 14 as we speak), and I STILL can't decide how I feel about it. I'm already pretty certain about the final pairings, and I'll finish the show just for the sake of seeing how they get there, but I'm not actually that excited about it. It's like all of the parts are work well individually, but for some reason they fall short when you put them all together.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm really behind on the discussions in this thread, so I'm not even going to try to catch up. Bah.

@ MEIKO**** ^-^

I know I know! I know there's a lot of Joo Ji Hoon fans out there. Sorry! Don't hate me!

. . .

I still think he's hot!! (And working with Shin Min Ah TWICE has redeemed him for me). If you're a Joo Ji Hoon fan, you should watch Kitchen. There's a pretty steamy scene in there.

@ mishane,

i think what pissed me off the most about the drama was they FINALLY got the blessing! and i'm sitting on my floor (i can't sit on my couch cuz i automatically fall asleep, it's just THAT comfortable) and i'm thinking "they're going to get together. this is the moment that i've waited for since the beginning of the drama.. the IT moment. makes all the other crap that's happened inbetween all worth it"... then BAM!!! they don't get together! instead they do that lame, "we can't be together because it'll break the brother's heart!" crap. i'm like, "NO WAY!!!" he gave his blessing! he wants the two most important ppl in his heart to be happy! and they DENY him that. i'm just like "WTF?" but i still watched it til the end just in case they finally come to the realization that they can be together, cuz she's forgiven him his assholism and he's acknowledged she had nothing to do w/ the brother's accident. and NOTHING! NOTHING!!!!

but i've come to a realization myself as i'm typing this reply... Rain must've done a really good job if i'm still pissed at him for a role that he portrayed. so i change my mind. he's was EXCELLENT in this drama. i just still hate the drama.
