I Hear Your Voice: Episode 8

I feel like all I do is talk about how I love this show, but hell, I LOVE THIS SHOW. It’s got my heart locked away in a steel box, and I’m pretty sure I know who’s got the key. The story barrels on ahead into darkness, and our characters start to crack under the weight of it all. Suddenly everything comes into question: truth and lies, right and wrong, and head and heart.

EPISODE 8: “For whom is this life”

We open on a news report, which can only mean the worst. Mom’s chicken shop went down in flames… and she didn’t survive. Noooo! Mom! I knew in my gut we were headed here, but damn.

Hye-sung faints in Su-ha’s arms at the hospital, and he just holds her close in the middle of the chaos.

Min Joon-gook survives with minor burns, and gets questioned as a suspect. But he asks the police specifically for a district change. We find out why, a few weeks later—Judge Kim arrives at Mom’s funeral and his colleagues tell him that Min Joon-gook’s case will be tried in his courtroom, of all places.

Hye-sung’s colleagues are all present at the funeral, where she just stands numbly, receiving condolences but hardly registering anything at all.

Lawyer Shin asks Judge Kim a favor, and requests that he and Kwan-woo be kept from having to defend the man who killed Hye-sung’s mother. Judge Kim says he’ll do what he can, but then adds that it’s unlike Lawyer Shin to even ask for such a thing—he’s a suspect awaiting trial, which means we don’t know if he’s guilty or not.

At the same time, Do-yeon is the prosecutor assigned to the case, and she listens sympathetically as Min Joon-gook tells her this is all a terrible misunderstanding, and that he ran into the fire to rescue his manager, who was only ever sweet to him and gave an ex-con a second chance and made him birthday food and everything.

She points out that he has an unusual connection to the victim’s daughter, which he also swears is a misunderstanding—he didn’t kill that man ten years ago.

And at that, Do-yeon turns on a dime. She reminds Joon-gook that there were two eyewitnesses to his murder that night… and she’s the other one. That’s an answer he was not expecting.

She looks him right in the eye and says that’s the thing about liars—once you find out there’s been one lie, you start to question whether anything else they said was true. She tells him they’ll meet in court. Excellent. Suddenly I’m so very grateful for you, Seo Do-yeon.

He gets transferred back to jail from the courthouse, and there’s Su-ha, waiting for him to come out of the building. Please tell me you’re not armed with a knife right now. There are so many ways this could go wrong.

Just as Joon-gook is about to get on the bus, Su-ha charges at him and starts throwing punches. He’s so enraged that three guards can’t separate them. He screams, “WHY?! Why did you kill an innocent person?”

Joon-gook swears he didn’t do it. But Su-ha reads his thoughts, and starts to strangle him. The guards finally put him down and put Joon-gook on the bus, and he turns to give Su-ha one last menacing look.

At the funeral, Kwan-woo finds Hye-sung mindlessly writing lists and wondering if she has enough relatives to carry the coffin. He brings her food and urges her to eat, promising to take care of the details.

She thanks him for everything and tells him to go home, but he argues that he can’t: “I don’t want to. I’m your boyfriend now. If I leave you alone I know you’ll cry, so how can I go?”

But she says, “Let me be alone… so I can cry. You can do that for me, right? Since you’re my boyfriend.”

She sits alone that night in the dark room, wondering what’s wrong with her that she can’t cry, thinking maybe she really is that cold-hearted.

Su-ha arrives and sits down next to her, and she asks where he’s been. “To see Min Joon-gook.” She asks for the truth, and he gives it—Min Joon-gook killed Mom. She asks cautiously if he saw in Joon-gook’s mind what Mom’s final moments were like.

Su-ha nods, barely holding back his tears. He says that Joon-gook let Mom call Hye-sung in her final moments. It only now occurs to her what that phone call with Mom really was.

As she plays it back in her mind, she starts to pound her chest. Now Mom’s words not to spend her life hating, her strange tone of voice, her wanting the call to linger… it hits her like a wave, and she bursts into sobs, crying: “Mom! Mom! I didn’t know! Mom, I didn’t know! I didn’t know it was the end!” She breaks down in uncontrollable tears, and Su-ha just silently stands behind her for her to lean on as she cries.

The next thing we know, Kwan-woo storms into Judge Kim’s lunch to ask for someone else to be assigned to Min Joon-gook’s case. What. Judge Kim says he did everything he could, but all the other public defenders rejected the case, and Min Joon-gook also applied to have Kwan-woo be his lawyer. Bastard.

Pretty the Paralegal freaks out that the office mood will go straight into the toilet, and asks Lawyer Shin to do something to keep this from happening. He cringes to think how Hye-sung will react… which is when she walks into the office and overhears the whole thing.

She comes outside, where Kwan-woo is wrestling with how to handle this. But she surprises him by saying that this is better—she was worried that Lawyer Shin would get the case, and he’d be a lawyer before a friend, but Kwan-woo will be different right? “You’re always on my side, right?”

Oh no, you can already see that this is going to rip him up. She asks, “You believe me, right?” He says yes. She leans on his shoulder and thanks him, but the look on his face betrays worry.

He steels himself with the reminder that he’s on Hye-sung’s side, and goes to see Joon-gook. But a guard comes out to say that he’s not available for a consult because he tried to commit suicide.

Kwan-woo rushes to the hospital, where he reads Joon-gook’s suicide note—a heartfelt sob story about wanting to make amends with Hye-sung and Su-ha but just causing them more pain, and seeking out Mom as a means of making up for his sins.

He describes how gracious Mom was to accept him and forgive him, and how caring she was. He says maybe it was his fault she died after all, because he knew she had been fainting lately, but didn’t do anything about it.

We see the version of his story play out, where he found her lying in the shop as the fire was going, and carried her out on his back. He writes that he doesn’t mind giving his life to have his sincere feelings conveyed, and that he’ll go now to join Mom, the only person who was ever kind to him. AUGH. YOU RAT BASTARD.

He wakes up, and Kwan-woo says he doesn’t believe this letter or the suicide attempt, but it doesn’t faze Joon-gook, who says that it could seem that way. Kwan-woo demands to know, “Why me?!”

Joon-gook: “Because if it were another lawyer, she wouldn’t believe it. If you—the person not on my side—can prove my innocence, then Jang Hye-sung will have to believe me.” Damn. He’s pouring on the heartfelt sincerity, and you can see it start to get to Kwan-woo.

He investigates the case, going over the crime scene and digging into recent events like the altercation with Su-ha. It’s starting to look bad…

The day of the trial rolls around, and Su-ha contemplates his switchblade. But he remembers Hye-sung asking him to promise no revenge, and he puts it away in his drawer. Phew.

He finds Hye-sung thinking at Mom’s picture that it’ll be okay—Kwan-woo will be on their side, and they head to the courthouse together. She pauses at the door, unable to bring herself to turn the knob. “Min Joon-gook is in there, right?” She says it’s just like ten years ago, and this time Su-ha opens the door for her and leads her inside.

Do-yeon presents the charge—murder by arson—and then the judge asks Kwan-woo for the defendant’s plea. But he’s lost in thought, and he looks over at Hye-sung. And that’s when Su-ha hears what he’s about to say before he says it aloud. Su-ha: “No…”

Kwan-woo stands up, and pleads not guilty. Min Joon-gook gives Hye-sung a chilling look.

After the hearing, Hye-sung rips into Kwan-woo, asking how he could defend the man who killed her mother.

He urges her to listen and gives Joon-gook’s account, from seeking Mom out as a means of making amends, to all the circumstantial evidence—the head wound that Joon-gook claims was due to a fall, or the lack of CCTV footage.

She spits right back that there’s no footage because he cut the feed, pointing out that the last thing on that security tape is Min Joon-gook walking towards it. But Kwan-woo says that’s all speculation.

Su-ha’s been standing by, and he finally erupts to say that the head wound is from Min Joon-gook beating her. And ohgodohgod—we see it in flashback as he bludgeons her to death.

Kwan-woo says he could be right, but so could the other possibility, where Min Joon-gook is innocent and tried to save Mom. Su-ha turns to Hye-sung, who’s just thinking with pleading eyes at Kwan-woo, “Please, don’t do this. You’re not supposed to be like this. You’re supposed to be on my side.” Su-ha can’t handle watching her heartbreak and tells Kwan-woo to stop, finally punching him in the gut just to make him shut up.

Kwan-woo starts to dig into Su-ha’s dad’s case as well, and sighs toward Hye-sung’s empty chair and says that he feels lately like he’s become the guard to an evil king.

Su-ha comes home to find Hye-sung cleaning, which alarms him, and she tells him to go home now, since Min Joon-gook’s in jail and there’s no need for him to live here anymore. Su-ha: “No, I don’t want to.” She flares up at him that she hates everybody right now, and even wants to pick fights with the dirty dishrag in her hand. She begs him to leave her alone before she says things she’ll regret. Su-ha: “No.” She asks if he’s a child, so he retorts, “That’s right, I am a child. I don’t understand what you’re saying, so go ahead and say anything.” Aw, are you letting yourself be her punching bag?

She rails at him: “I’m hating you thousands, tens of thousands of times a day—that all this is because of testifying in that courtroom ten years ago; that all this is because of you!” Oof. She asks with tears in her eyes if he wants to hear worse, and even though it clearly upsets him, he says, “Go ahead. I’ll listen to it all.” He walks over to start helping her clean, and adds: “Say it. You can swear too. I’ll sit by your side and listen to it all.”

She wipes away a tear and comes up next to him as he starts washing dishes. After a long meaningful pause, she says, “Su-ha-ya… that’s cooking oil.” HA. She asks if he read the judge’s mind during the trial, and he says he’s split 51-49, leaning more towards acquitting.

The next day Hye-sung spins and spins in her revolving door, going ’round in circles between “I can do it. I can’t. I can do it. I can’t.” She decides she can, and then goes to Do-yeon’s house. Just standing in the street reminds her of Mom coming to her defense when it mattered most to her, and she struggles to even ring the doorbell. Judge Seo watches from the balcony as the two girls meet on the lawn.

Hye-sung asks how Do-yeon thinks the trial will go, and Do-yeon says it’s difficult with nothing but circumstantial evidence. Hye-sung reminds her who Min Joon-gook is, adding that if she had testified that day, she’d be suffering the same fate. Do-yeon says she wants to put the guy away too, but the evidence…

Hye-sung shocks her as she blurts: “Then falsify it.” She gets down on her knees and pleads, “Please help me, Do-yeon-ah. I didn’t know a day like this would come. I didn’t know the day would come when I’d kneel in front of you and beg like this. But I’ve sold my pride—I’ll sell it all, because I have to catch him.”

She says she’ll do anything, even apologize for ten years ago. And she does—she says it was all her fault and that she’s sorry. That really catches Do-yeon off-guard, and then Dad comes out to ask if she really means it. Hye-sung struggles against her pride, and thinks to herself, “I’m sorry, Mom,” as she cries a tear. But she steels herself and says yes—she’s sorry for all of it, and asks for his help.

They sit down together and Judge Seo says they have to make evidence, and asks if there’s someone else they can get to testify like a cellmate from prison. Hye-sung remembers that Lawyer Shin’s friend shared a cell with him, and says she can find him.

Judge Seo says the man will be dying for parole, so he’ll put in a word to leverage that for a deal. Do-yeon turns to him in shock: “Are you saying we should get him to perjure himself?” He says that to catch the killer, this is what they have to do, and says baldly, “You’ve done it before, ten years ago.” Damn. So he knew all along that Do-yeon was lying when she swore Hye-sung shot a firecracker in her eye.

He says they have to be willing to do anything to catch a killer, and turns to Hye-sung: “You agree, right?” Oh man, did she just sell her soul to the devil or what? She answers yes.

Su-ha finds her on another cleaning spree when he comes home, and she says she got on her knees to beg Do-yeon for help, and even sank so low as to take the blame for the fireworks. She starts to cry, and he reaches up to wipe the tear from her face, but she pulls away.

Do-yeon questions Joon-gook’s cellmate Hwang Dal-joong, but he says there must be a misunderstanding—Min Joon-gook was nothing but sweet and good-natured. He did mention Jang Hye-sung once, but all he said was that he owed her a debt.

Do-yeon gets him right where he’s vulnerable though, and asks if he doesn’t want to hurry and get paroled so he can search for the daughter he lost twenty-eight years ago. He asks if that’s possible, and she says it can be, depending on how he answers her questions.

Lawyer Shin goes to play celebrity bingo with his friend Dal-joong and looks up in surprise at the news that he’s going to testify for the prosecution—didn’t he always say Min Joon-gook was a nice man? He hedges and says that’s not all there was to him, and Lawyer Shin raises an eyebrow.

Hye-sung gets ready for the next day of the trial, and holds up Mom’s picture to tell her that if it goes well she can get a conviction. She thinks back to what Mom had said about why she stood up for her—because she was right.

“I’m right this time too, right? Tell me that I am.” She hugs Mom’s picture close, lip quivering to keep her tears in check.

She runs into Lawyer Shin outside the courthouse and he says he came to ask her something—did she make a request of his friend Dal-joong that she shouldn’t have? She denies it, but then turns back to challenge him. “And what if I did?”

He asks if she’s really breaking the rules, and she admits, “By following the rules I’ll lose everything.” He says that doing so will just bring misfortune back around on her, even bigger than before—doesn’t she know that?

Hye-sung: No! I don’t! Have you ever been a victim? In this country, a victim can do nothing. I never got to ask Min Joon-gook why he killed my mother, because I’m not allowed to see the defendant. In the courtroom, the judge listens to Min Joon-gook’s words more than mine. The victim can’t breathe from the injustice, but can’t do a single thing! Innocent plea? Rational rules? That’s all dog shit. Now that I’m the victim, rules and means are all dog shit. And all lawyers are sons of bitches. And I’m a dog just like them.

She yanks off the scales of justice pin she always wears on her lapel and chucks it to the ground as she walks away. Lawyer Shin picks it up and wonders—if Min Joon-gook gets acquitted, will Hye-sung remain a public defender?

It’s time for the cellmate to testify, and Su-ha confirms that the judge is split 50-50. Hye-sung says that’s enough for the testimony to give them an edge. They watch as the man testifies that Joon-gook talked about his plans to get revenge on Hye-sung.

Joon-gook lights up in anger, and Su-ha flips the locket on his phone: Heads, for guilty. They’re sure the case is all but won, but then Kwan-woo gets up to cross-examine him, and tears his testimony to shreds.

It’s horrible in so many ways—what they’re doing is wrong in the first place, but he’s clawing Hye-sung’s heart out with every word. Su-ha flips the locket back the other way, and Hye-sung cries into her hands.

And then Min Joon-gook leers at Su-ha the exact same way he did ten years ago, and thinks the exact same thing—that all these morons believe him this time too. And that his next targets are Su-ha and Hye-sung.

Hye-sung clutches a picture of her and Mom as she lies in bed that night, thinking back to the time she fixed a computer and Mom called her a genius and told her to go be a computer science major, or the time she did Mom’s makeup and Mom called her Picasso and told her to go to art school. *tears* Mom just always thought the best of her, no matter what.

Su-ha calls her out to dinner, but she doesn’t answer, and he sees the millionth ignored text from Kwan-woo on her phone. This time it says that he’s waiting outside until she comes out to see him.

Su-ha goes out instead and says she’s hanging in there, but it might be hard to see her for a while. He hears Kwan-woo think that he really doesn’t want to give up on Hye-sung, so he says that Hye-sung likes him very much, and that’s why she’s having such a hard time with all this.

“So give her time, and wait for her.” Aw, kid, you’re killing me.

Kwan-woo thought Su-ha didn’t like him, but Su-ha just turns to go without answering either way. He calls out to ask if he hates him too for taking Min Joon-gook’s side. Su-ha pauses, changes his face into a smile, and turns around to say not at all, and thanks him…

And then when he turns back away, he thinks to himself: “Thank you… for giving me the chance.” Oh noes. To what? To kill him yourself? Gaaaah. My heart can’t take this.

Su-ha puts the date of Joon-gook’s verdict into his phone, and looks down at his knife. He’s absent from school yet again, and then we see him look around Hye-sung’s apartment for stuff to fix. No, are you leaving? He changes all the light bulbs and fixes the little things that he can, and then he picks up his bags and takes one last look around. He puts the shoes back in place—the men’s shoes she didn’t need while he was living there—and then heads out.

Hye-sung visits Mom’s memorial and says that ten years ago she was really scared, but she testified because Mom told her she was always right. “But I was wrong. Life isn’t a fairytale. I should’ve run away like Do-yeon did.”

Su-ha shows up behind her with a flower for Mom, and says he read her mind this morning and knew she was coming here. He asks if she’s not going to work, and suggests they go somewhere else instead.

So they go to the aquarium like they promised, and he says he says he finally got to come after four tries—he was supposed to come with Dad but he died, and then a school field trip but he got sick, and then with Hye-sung the last time. She points out that he’s the one who didn’t answer his phone that day, and he just brushes it off. She asks why he wanted to come here so badly, and he says, “You know that my world is noisier than other people’s. I thought it’d be quiet here, and peaceful.” She agrees that it is.

After a while he turns to her and says he packed and moved out today, but she needn’t worry because Min Joon-gook won’t ever hurt her again. You’re making my stomach churn right now. She asks how he knows, and he lies that he read Joon-gook’s mind and she can trust him. She wonders if he brought her here to say goodbye, and he nods, adding that there are a few things he wanted to say to her first. She looks up at him nervously, “What is this? Are you never going to see me again?” He lies (again!) that he’s a senior in high school and has to study.

The first thing he wanted to tell her is that Mom was proud of her until the very end—he read it in Joon-gook’s mind. Flashback to Joon-gook telling Mom why she’s about to die: because her daughter testified against him ten years ago. Joon-gook: “Don’t you regret it?” Mom: “I do regret it. If I had known she was that brave, I should’ve praised her more.” Hye-sung’s eyes fill with tears, and Su-ha adds: “And she said that she’d be dancing up in heaven.”

The second thing is for her not to be so hard on Kwan-woo, because he likes her a lot, and really believed this was the right thing to do. He doesn’t know the truth, and he did the best he could. She nods that she knows.

He takes a breath before saying, “And this is obvious but… you like him a lot too, which is why you’re having such a hard time. So don’t hide too long, and go see him. It’ll be better for both of you.” *whimper*

He says that’s it (THAT’S IT?!) and turns to go. She calls out after him, but trails off, unable to finish her sentence. She just says “thank you” for everything, and tells him to study hard.

A tears trickles down his cheek as he stands there, stuck between coming and going, and then he turns back. Omo.

“There’s one more thing you don’t know.” Omo.

And then he puts his hand around her waist and pulls her in close for a kiss. Omo.

Another tear falls as he kisses her, and then he smiles one last time before turning to walk away, into the dark. Ohmygah, I’m a blubbering mess. Why am I crying? It’s not even over. Stop crying.

An epilogue as the credits roll:

In the scene where Kwan-woo had confessed his feelings, he had asked for a re-do on their date. But she remembers that she made plans to go to the aquarium with Su-ha and says she can’t push it because he’ll be really disappointed.

“I’m sorry, but my promise* to Su-ha comes first.” …which he never heard because he walked away heartbroken.

*[“Promise” is the same word as “plans” in this context, so it’s a play on both: I made plans with Su-ha first, but also My promise to Su-ha comes first.]

COMMENTS

This episode left me dead. Gah, I knew Mom would probably die in service of the story, and even though I hate that she’s gone (not to mention that when you get a confluence of top-notch character and actress, it’s doubly painful to let go), I’m with this story and where we’re going. Mom’s murder takes the stakes to a place that’ll carry so much of what comes after this, and there’s a new depth and darkness in Hye-sung’s character to explore.

I love the conflict this sets up between right and wrong, Kwan-woo and Hye-sung, and Hye-sung and the Seo Family. And because we loved Mom so, we feel the same exact struggle—she does the wrong thing, but why does it feel satisfying when we think it might work? She shouldn’t have sacrificed her morals for revenge, but why do our hearts sink when it fails and the killer will go free? I like that I’m conflicted, because my heart is with Hye-sung even if I know that she’s hitting a low point and making the wrong choices.

It was a great conflict for Kwan-woo as well, and fitting for his character to do the right thing, even if we’re screaming at him that he’s wrong. It’s almost tragedy-proportions of bad fate—he does the right thing, but has the wrong information, and she knows what’s right but chooses the wrong way to get that result. And the fact that she gave up her conviction to join forces with the Dark Lord of Relative Truths is just extra salt in the wound. I hated that she gave into the fireworks thing. It has pretty much come to define her—the fact that she never let them win even when they levied her schooling and Mom’s job at her—that it really felt like she was giving up everything when she caved to the lie. The whole thread of lies worked really well in this episode, from Su-ha’s white lies as he said goodbye, to Hye-sung’s choice to declare lies as truth, to Kwan-woo not knowing truth from lies when it came to Joon-gook.

I’m terrified that Su-ha’s going to do something stupid, which is pretty much a given at this point. I don’t actually think the story’s going to let him be a killer, but I do think he’ll go as far as trying, and he’s going to end up in a deep vat of trouble when it goes south. I like that he walks that dangerous line, but now that Hye-sung really does feel like she’s out of options, there’s nothing holding him back from throwing himself into the fire. That kiss broke my heart more than made me swoon (okay, but it did make me swoon), because it’s goodbye. Realistically, of course, I don’t expect the hero of our story to go down in flames halfway through the show, so we’ll focus on the future, which will come to pass as long as nobody goes stabbing anyone, right? Right?

I’ve always felt that Hye-sung’s relationship with Kwan-woo was more head than heart—he’s the guy you want to date and marry, so duh, she accepts his confession and they start to date. But when he wants to stay by her side at the funeral she asks him to leave, and when she asks him to leave he really goes. When she tells Su-ha to get out, that she hates him and blames him, he refuses to go and insists on staying, even if it’s to be her punching bag. That just says everything, and that’s before he actually plays cupid to mend their relationship because it would make her happier. Gah. How are we not to swoon?

For dramas I'm usually an avid watcher before a fangirl... but omg, Lee Jongsuk, you've won me completely over. When Sooha turned around and said "thank you" I seriously thought it was because he was thanking him that he gave him a chance to get the girl. GAAAH. The thought of him thanking Kwan Woo because he gets to kill him instead... never once crossed my mind. O_O.

I replayed the last 3 minutes again, and again, and again. So beautiful. I was expecting the kiss to be dragged on longer (like usual dramas) but it ended so abruptly. I was left hanging. V_V.

P.S. I see Lee Jongsuk reaching the top star status soon.

I think Lee Jong Suk is the best young actor in this day. I tend to compare him to Kim Soo Hyun, who undoubtedly is more popular due to Moon/Sun and his box-office successes (The Thieves, Covertly, Grandly), but give Jong Suk a few more hit projects, and he'll definitely be on that level. Jong Suk was the best find of Secret Garden.

Yea!! I just have this nice warm down to earth feels from him. Watched a lot of his interviews and not once had he come off as cocky to me. A lot of other flower boys these days are on the chopping block because of their personalities. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

I honestly think that Kim Soo Hyun's Moon/Sun was overrated. I could not find a good rapport with Ha Ga in in the drama. I do not think both boys are good looking by any measure but the fact I feel for Soo ha proves Lee Jong Suk's acting skills. Though there was very little romantic part in the School 2013, the drama was quite interesting and his acting was powerful enough to watch the whole episodes straight.

I thought he was saying "thank you" for the chance to get the girl, too.

He really is a fabulous actor.

I thought the kiss was well done and in character for matter of fact, pragmatic, Su-ha. No fan fare, just perfect expression. We of course could have done without the cliched girl eye bugging, but you know it was kind of fitting for that specific scene and not too over the top. The brevity was appropriate too, it wasn't an expression of passion, it was I just need to tell you I love you and a goodbye rolled together and Hye Sung did not consciously see him as a viable mate, so she would be surprised.

I cannot believe I'm approving of a cliched bug eye kiss. They normally totally annoy me.

LOL that bug eye kiss usually annoys the heck out of me too but everything just built up so nicely and organically.. I saw it more of a good bye kiss then anything, like GF. So sad.
But we all know hes coming back haha.
I think hye sung warrants the bug eye, because as of now we have no evidence that she sees su ha as a man yet, moreso as a dongsaeng so the fact that he just sprung one up on her out of no where probably caught her off guard.
That, i approve.

He just wants her to know that how he really feels abt her, in case he doesn't get to see her again.

Ha. Right? For once the bug eyed reaction to a kiss made sense.
It was the perfect kind of kiss too: it said I love you and goodbye, just as you said. Agh so perf <3

Yeah, I guess she had no clue about his feelings, since he always denies he likes her and making her believe he doesn't even find her attractive.

Such a beautiful but yet sad kiss. T_T

LJS really does emote wonderfully (well except maybe more comical scenes, but forgivable)...

Though it never ceases to amaze me how RED his ears get in more intense scenes, heh

OMO .... I' m such a mess right now... Really... I'm not exaggerating. I don't remember last time I cried so many times in just one episode... I had to remind to myself to take a deep breath. I think I shed all the tears physically possible... T_T
I'm afraid to continue watching this drama. I don't know what to expect for an ending... I want to hold on to the idea that both SH and HS would be together at the end, both alive and well as a happy couple. But I am in a tragical mood right now and i am feeling that one of them (SH) will be dying at the end... *sad thoughts go away please!*
The only happy/ positive thought i got after watching this episode is that at least now i'm pretty sure that SH and HS are the main couple. First kiss in the show, that epilogue... Yep they are the OTP here. *sniff*

OMG!! This is drama crack for me and I haven't had one of those in a long time. I absolutely love everything about this drama. However, it's putting me in a conundrum. Having read the recaps for episode 7 and 8 (thank you GF) I don't know if I have strength to watch it. I love the interactions between the leads (shipping for SH and HS of course) but I don't know if I can handle all the heartbreak. Reading everyone's response and it's scaring me to death to watch (I don't want to be a puddle of goo). The kiss, the tears, the attempt of a smile and SuHa's last word of wisdom just about killed me and I'm only reading it. Hay....what to do...be brave and watch or skip all the heart break and watch next weeks episodes.

**On a side note...OMG! I have now a huge LJS fan!!

That kiss was see-the-light amazing!! ♥ And that smirk before he swooped her up. Unf. This is the best episode so far. I loved the quiet contemplative tone of this episode. I felt the kiss was the perfect way to end this week. I know when I replay the scene over the weekend, I'll be swooning all over again.

Oh god, when Hye Sung put the pieces together of her being on the phone with Mom as Min Joon Gook held her captive, it was gut-wrenching to watch. The truth hit her like a ton of bricks. But I still can't excuse her for outright blaming Su Ha for Mom's death. I know it was in the heat of the moment, but please do not say things that will break his heart.

I was confused at first why Do Yeon didn't recognize Min Joon Gook. And he, her. Didn't he want to kill both girls for witnessing the murder? Then bam, with that one word, I was instantly on Do Yeon's side. But planting evidence is so, so bad. It never crossed any of these legal professionals' minds that they can get thrown in jail for obstruction of justice? Plus I don't think Mom would have approved of Hye Sung lying to catch her killer. After all, that was Mom's final message to her. I also can't believe Do Yeon's father knew she lied all those years, yet still acted like an arse to Hye Sung when she was on her knees.

Kwan Woo representing Min Joon Gook should not have been permitted, even if the defendant requested him. Kwan Woo is Hye Sung's boyfriend. (When did that happen, by the way?) Conflict of interest much? Isn't the judge afraid he would throw the case? It's like doctors not being able to operate on their family members. But I loved Cha Byun's airtight defense. If Min Joon Gook were smart, he wouldn't have told you; if Min Joon Gook were stupid, he still wouldn't have told you.

I know Su Ha is leaving Hye Sung to seek vigilante justice, and I'm torn because Min Joon Gook deserves to die, but Su Ha does not deserve to go to jail for his death. I can't see any way Hye Sung would be able to convince him to not get revenge, though. Su Ha really has to realize it for himself.

A big thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

Oh No! When they did the time jump in the beginning, i totally couldn't bear to part with all the sweetness in the whole drama in previous episodes, but alas, we're entering a new phase in the drama. As girlfriday have mentioned, this drama leaves people feeling really conflicted. Hye Sung and Kwan Soo, we all know where they are coming from, they're both right and wrong at the same time, and that is what makes everything so hard. At the funeral when Hye Sung ask Kwan Soo to leave to allow her to cry, but cried in front of Su Ha instead after Kwan Soo left, I felt that this means Hye Sung feels more comfortable around Su Ha. Hye Sung feels closer to Su Ha emotionally, that's why she can cry in front of him without restricting herself. Back to Kwan Soo, I've always liked him as the naive and trusting 'Dorkypants'(as girlfriday calls him), but i feel that the case of mum's death is the one that will(and should) really make him grow up. I can already imagine how much regret and pain, how apologetic he would feel when he find out the truth about Kim Jong Gook. Starting from Hye Sung's confrontation with Lawyer Shin, I can feel the emotion building up. It was such an impactful scene, especially when she took of her badge, threw it on the floor and said" All lawyers are son of bitches. And I'm one of them." It's almost like she hate herself for being a public defender to the entire crappy law system. And then when lawyer Shin asked (more to himself) whether Hye Sug will continue to be a lawyer if MJG gets away from this case scott free, I sighed. I doubt so. But still I'm glad that Hye Sung was complaining after she returned from Do Yeon's house about why Do Yeon is the only one whom she can seek help from, because that proves that amidst all her grieve and pain and hatred, the part of Hye Sung that we love the most is still there. And for Min Jong Gook, well, one thing is for sure, the actor who played him did a fantastic job. I am utterly freaked out, thank you very much. It just leaves us cold, when he was explaining his side of his story, even I almost believed him. He seems so earnest, so sincere...why is it not real? Why are you like that? Why????( Oh right, cus the writer wrote it that way.) When Su Ha told Kwan Soo that he did a good job at the gates, and when he say to himself that he actually should thank Kwan Soo for giving him a chance, I was like, a chance for what? A chance WITH Hye Sung, or AT chance at Jong Gook? Fast forward to the most epic part of this episode, when they go to the aquarium. I really loved the background music which was serene and even felt a little mysterious. And the blue water that surrounds Hye Sung and Su Ha was just beautiful. And this sets the backdrop for our tear-inducing parting scene. When Su Ha told Hye Sung about what her mum said in the last few moments of her life, it was just so sad! Especially when the mum said "I treated her too badly"(No you didn't! God knows you're the best mum that Hye Sung can ever have!) I think this is really important for Hye Sung because now she keeps thinking that it was her mistake to testify against Min Jong Gook 10 years ago, and this mistake has cost her mum her life. But no, Su Ha told her what she wanted the most all along and needed the most this time round: She did right. When he added that mum say she will dance even in heaven. The image is just that it brings about is just....... Then he moved on to talk about Kwan Soo. Who knows how hard it was for Su Ha to talk about Kwan Soo and Hye Sung's love when he had loved her for 10 years.Considering he's s only 19(in the drama), that's more than half of his life! But he did well, and Hye Sung just responded calmly because she know what he said was all true. Funny that while they are ten years apart,Su Ha is the one giving her advice and comfort now as if he is the older one. Well, guess witnessing murder of your own father, being unwanted and abandoned at young age, plus mind reading abilities do combine to make people mature faster. After the advice, Su Ha turned to leave...and i was like NOOOOO! with my hand shooting out grabbing the air in front of me. Thank god Hye Sung called after him. When she did it was like she did it because she couldn't bear for him to leave but she didn't want to admit out loud therefore she just thanked him cus she did not know what else to say. But Su Ha knows. Of course he does. He knows how much she couldn't bear for him to leave, and this give him strength to turn around and "say" the last thing on his mind.
.......*swoon*
*swoon*
*swoon*
*swoon*......
until he turn to leave again. Heartbreak, again.
Looking at his face of resolution as he leave Hye Sung, that was when I can finally confirm my uncertainty before.
Guess when he talked about the chance Kwan Soo had given him, he was talking about his chance at Min Jong Gook after all. Dang it.

I also feel Kwan Woo's character is a thankless one. I feel bad for him. However, while I do understand this is for narrative reasons, it is kinda strange that Korean MEs are unable to identify murder. They did not even show a police investigation. Well, this is where we make a leap of faith I suppose because we kinda have to move on. But it aches my heart so...

Another good episode.

Our heros are being tempted by the darkside.

Hye Sung has lost her moral compass with her grief. She is not only putting vengeance first, she's subjugating herself to Mean Girl and her father, those with already shaky moral compasses. I mean seriously Mean Girls Dad KNEW his daughter had lied and still tormented Hye Sung and her mother like that. What. A. PenisLeech. But Hye Sung, she crossed the line with the case where she helped Mean Girl, and now she has totally derailed.

Nerd Lawyer, as a public defender, did the right thing in taking a case assigned to him. Morally, he did the right thing in providing the best defense he could muster.
As a boyfriend, the right thing to do would have been to resign his position. He is thus choosing his career over Hye Sung.. I'm sure the writers will have Hye Sung will forgive him. However, for me, I'd completely understand he followed his conscious, but he'd be history.

Su-ha is planning to murder Scary Wrench Guy to protect Hye Sung. Su-ha is following personal ethics, not seeking vengeance, keeping his promise to protect HS. I personally have a hard time finding fault with him or calling this noble idiocy. Hye Sung is family to him, and he's seen nothing but incompetence from the legal system. He knows Wrench Man will kill her. I can totally understand sacrificing for someone you love.

My problem here is the portrayal of the police and legal system as totally incompetent. The writing of the show over all is much better than this, so I do not understand why it is so weak on that front. An investigation of the scene and the autopsy would have provided evidence that did not align with Scary Wrench Guy's story. And Nerd Lawyer would have never been assigned to the case due to his personal relationship with Hye Sung. That would compromise the accused ability to receive fair representation. The show would have been stronger with a nail biter to the wire trial with all the right things done during investigation, and with an impartial PD. That the system did everything right, and Scary Guy still walked would give Hye Sung's desperation and turn to the dark side more impact.

Have to agree with everything you said in your last paragraph. The weak writing of the legal process was enough to keep me from being as emotionally invested in this episode as I otherwise would have been. It's always been an issue with this drama but I was able to overlook it before because the courtroom scenes, while playing a role in our character development, we're not necessarily pertinent to the overall narrative arc unlike this episode. I still love the characters, love the show, I just don't want those legal what-the-hell moments to pull me out of the narrative.

I thought she knew she testified but not who against.

At any rate, if the Mom's friend knew the his name, I think that would help indicate that it wasn't on the up an up. The fact that Hyesung would know her mom wouldn't know who the man was would contradict with the fact he said he was trying to make it up to them. And really, how is okay to buddy up with the family who sent you to prison? How is that not suspicious, especially when the witnesses are clearly afraid as indicated by their police reports. Well, the case is just a tangle of little details.

1) The wonky forensics on this show is driving me crazy. For the first time in five years, I'm going to put my very expensive education in Biomedical Engineering to use and let everyone know that blunt force trauma to the skull is not consistent with injuries from a car wreck and definitely not consistent with bumping one's head on a stove. It's driving me crazy!! There's your evidence, right there!

2) I wish that they had made Lawyer Oska a little more conflicted about what he's doing. I get that he's conflicted about hurting Hye Sung but I don't like that they made him just believe Joon Gook's crazy story. I know that part of his character is his ridiculous naivete, but they are missing some prime opportunities for growth by not having him have to rise to the challenge of defending a defendent that he doesn't really trust . I'm afraid that this lack of investment in his development may be a sign that he's not the one after all. Team Oska took a big hit tonight but I'm holding out hope that he takes some strides next week.

3) On a similar note. I do admire Lawyer Oska for doing his job. He tried to get out of it and wasn't able to. (HUGE conflict of interest by the way. If they can force him to do it then why couldn't they force a lawyer from another office?). So he went all in. I'd argue that a better use of his lawyering skills would be to try to get Joon Gook to plead guilty and get him a lighter sentence. We all know that he wouldn't go for it but Oska doesn't and he didn't even try. That bothers me. But, if a defendent is determined to plead Not Guilty, there isn't anything the lawyer can do about it. It would have left an even bigger sour taste in my mouth if he had taken the case and then purposely done a bad job. Way unethical.

3) Speaking of unethical, I don't like what Hye Sung and Do Yeon did, even if I understand it (at least on Hye Sung's side). I'm ok with her having an emotional reaction and wanting to do whatever it takes to bring Joon Gook down but I hope that they come back and address it and they get a chance to redeem themselves the ethical way.

4) I'll admit I'm an Ajumma. I'm in my early thirties. I'm married with a kid. My celebrity crushes tend to skew a little older. So I never really got all the swooning over Suha. Try as I might, I could never see him as anything other than an adorable kid. But I caught a tiny glimpse of it tonight during the aquarium scene. I just barely saw the Man peeking out. Maybe it was the lighting or the camera angle because it didn't last very long.

5) I'm guessing that the time jump is coming sooner rather than later. I love that Suha didn't just disappear like every other Kdrama character embarking on a Time Jump. That's right KDramaland, it's ok to tell someone you love that you are leaving. She didn't like it, but she took the news well and did not immediately die. She even seemed to (GASP) understand a little! This show has been good about that. Nobody is keeping secrets from people who need to know them all in the name of protecting them (except Do Yoen's parents, who haven't told her that her real Daddy has been in prison for 25 years... but I'm guessing that's more for there benefit than for hers).

6) Do Yoen's parents are horrible, horrible people!

LOL agree with your number 1. that was one of the glaring plot holes that this show always tends to ignore.
First, it seems like south korea doesn't have some sort of forensic team or do any autopsies on corpses to confirm cause of death based on this show's portrayal. Or lack thereof.
In the beginning of this show when su ha's dad was bludgeoned to death with a steel pipe, people still bought that it was a simple car accident. Now, same with mom, except he used a wrench. Im sure they would have her body considering jin gook carried out the body from the fire.

Your #1 Thanks for clarifying that. Also, if Hyesung's mom died with a head wound that really agrees with the killer's previous MO. He likes to hit people.

#3 Yeah, I wondered about the conflict of interest as well. I guess we would need someone more familiar with Korean law to weigh in on that one. Now, if the show made a point of Kwanwoo accepting the case because of Joongook's plea about he being the only lawyer able to prove his innocence, that would make more sense. It would also make his unknowing betrayal of Hyesung more punchy.

The head injury... and she was TIED UP TIGHTLY for quite a while. Even if there were no evidence to convict Minjook, there should have been plenty of evidence to indicate that Mom didn't die in a fire, but was murdered.

Required fields are marked *

I thought they explained the car crash? My understanding was, there was no question of it being anything but a tragic car crash at first, so the DOA dad was simply cremated with out any autopsy or anything... THEN, a few days later, SH woke up and accused MJ of murder, but at that point, there was no body to identify....frankly, I didn't find it too much of a stretch. Why autopsy a mangled crash victim? It's not like you show up at a semi vs 4-door LOOKING for blunt force trauma...

However, on the mom's table vs wrench, I have no idea how different those wounds would look, sooo.....suspended disbelief on that one ;)

0

Required fields are marked *

But anytime someone dies, the doctors have to determine the exact Cause of Death. "Car Accident" is not specific enough, they've got to figure out whether it was a blow to the head, or a punctured lung, or blood loss or what have you. You autopsy a mangled crash victim because you don't know exactly which of his manglings killed him.

In Mom's case it's even worse. It's pretty much impossible to fall onto a table with the same force or the same angle needed to mimic a wrench to the head (wrench equals downward angle of impact, falling equals upwards angle of impact. Plus the fracturing and fragmentation of the skull will be totally different). On top of that, the investigators weren't even sure if it was the head wound or the fire that killed her. How hard is it to check and see if there was smoke in her lungs. That's why people who try to cover up murder with a fire always get caught... it's a dead giveaway.

Any forensic scientist would be able to tell that the woman was beaten to death and then burned. There would be fractures and breaks all around her face and skull. Defensive fractures on arms and hand bones. I mean it is completely unbelievable that this isn't part of the trial. I'm with you GF, this show has grabbed me by the heart and will not let go. Today's episode really brought all of the issues to a head and not a moment too soon or too late.

I had a feeling that the show would indeed go that dark and Hye-sung's mom would die. The stakes here are as high as they can be, life or death. Min Joon-gook isn't your average white-washed, ineffectual killer, he's the real deal. Evil incarnate but with depth and some indecision and feelings of remorse which make him much more realistic than your typical drama villain.

I too fear that Su Ha will seek vigilante justice. However much I hate that for him, I can see where he believes it is the only course of action. The law has failed him and Hye-sung. This isn't even about revenge, Su Ha didn't seek Joon Gook out to avenge his father when he found out he was released. He was trying to get a read on Joon-gook's intentions toward Hye-sung. At this point, Joon-gook has declared he will stop at nothing to destroy Hye-sung and Su Ha. Therefore, this isn't about revenge, but self-preservation/preservation of a loved one.

Even if Joon-gook was convicted and served another 10 years for murder, he might come after them the minute he's released. If there was a moment Joon-gook hesitated, it was with the birthday food from Hye-sung's mom and we saw how that turned out. Death probably is the only way to stop Joon-gook.

However, Joon-gook has proven time and again to be intelligent, resourceful and meticulous in the planning of his revenge. We even saw that with the way he handled the curveball thrown by Do-yeon. Su-ha needs to stop reacting emotionally and start thinking of a plan to trap Joon-gook.

I don't know if Kwan-woo and Hye-sung's relationship can come back from this blow. The sticking point to me is not so much that Kwan-woo defended his client, that was his job. The fact that he actually believed Joon-gook over Hye-sung will be the problem. Hye-sung's sore spot seems to be whether people trust her, believe her and are on her side. We saw that with the firework incident and the twins' case. Kwan-woo believing Joon-gook over Hye-sung might have put the nail in the coffin.

Su-ha is definitely the best man for Hye-sung. That she can cry in front of him, that he won't leave her side no matter what insults she hurls his way, that he cuts himself out of her life before most likely embarking on his dangerous path spell it out so clearly. That kiss was just perfect. And the epilogue. Su-ha has found his way into her heart, whether she knows it or not.

Hmmm. I actually thought that this won't be the real problem in Cha and Hye Seung's relationship. But I read what you thought about trust being the issue, and I think you're right. Great analysis!! :D

And yes, the fact that she let Su Ha stay with her when she cried, says it all. <3

I don't think it's right to be judge Lawyer Cha harshly for what he did. He really did believe what he was doing was right, and it is admirable that despite his attachment to Hye Seung, he did what he thought was right. HOWever, the fact that he was gullible enough to believe Min Joon Gook and that he doubted Hye Sueng is so sad. But I don't think this is why Hye Sueng will leave Lawyer Cha for Su Ha, because she seemed to understand why Cha did what he did. It'll be the fact that she doesn't love Lawyer Cha, that she actually loves Su Ha.

BUT, seriously. I felt so angry at Lawyer Cha too. :'(

Su Ha ftw. <3

Cha is a milksop. She will (hopefully) leave him because she realizes that. However I do not think it's safe to say she necessarily loves Suha in a romantic way..

is Su Ha the main or secondary lead?

because usually it's the second lead who does everything right while the main lead reaps the benefits, I'm afraid it might be the other way around here.

Secondary, he is really close to being main. However you could consider there are 4 main characters in this drama. Jang, Cha, Suha, and Jang's bitch-ass prosecutor frienemy

I would argue he IS the main - the title is "*I* can hear your voice," and he is the main catalyst, as it were. So I'd say it's him, or him and HS

That's a valid assumption based on typical k-drama formula except this writer has been known to deviate from it...
Some explanations above are good reasons as to why su-ha is the main lead.

Why, why, why do K-dramas so often insist on being shoddy with forensic and medical facts? Why? I see it time and time again, and it always pisses me off. Logic and basic medical facts ought not so blithely to be sacrificed on the altar of plot convenience. Viewers have brains, you know. And South Korea has one of the most intelligent and educated populations in the world. Why do they let their dramas get away with it?

Mr. Evil bludgeoned Mom to death before setting the place on fire. Given that he brought her body out in order to make it look like he was "trying to save her", it was in excellent condition for a thorough autopsy, which among other things, would have revealed that she had been murdered before ever having the opportunity to inhale toxic smoke from the fire. Not to mention the fact that Mom's head trauma screams murder and not accident. Gahhh! I know CSI is a popular American drama in Korea. I find it hard to believe modern and common sense investigative protocols are not followed in South Korea. I'm sure they have at their disposal every state-of-the-art piece of lab equipment and forensic method we have here in the U.S. And why is every drama police officer a graduate of the Key Stone Cop School of Criminal Justice?
Seriously.

Wow, now that you've pointed that one out, I can't unsee it! Yeah i do agree that this negligence of common sense in solving crimes happens a lot in Kdramas; they're always forsaking loopholes to fit plot movements! It's something that I always notice in hindsight, same with this one, like you've just mentioned. I have no rebuttal, just wanted to reply to say, great observation! They're assuming we'll buy that the head trauma obtained from a fall would be the same as one obtained from being hit by a wrench, but you're absolutely right that they aren't even the slightest bit similar!

Thats it you guys. I fucking hate this show. I really, honest to God cannot continue with the torture, anticipation, and greif the scriptwriter brings upon the drama's viewers. I feel sick and am ready to commit real seppuku before I continue this series, h*ck, I couldn't even finish this episode. Right after Cha said he denys all charges, I remember clear as day, last night I looked at my mother. We made eyecontact, glossing over the fact that we had previously talked about how Minjuk is a selfish, hate lusting, dispicible piece of trash that would be lucky to be referred to by the word, and we both then and there decided lawyer Cha is the biggest, most nïave, iridesant milksop we have ever beared witness of within a drama. I truly cannot go on any longer. My bowl of Capn' Crunch is getting warm because I have been sitting on the couch, staring at my tv, the screen never leaving that scene (we recorded the episode on dvr while watching it) where Cha made the biggest regret of his life. Minjuk is not only a respawning of lucifer himself, but a representation of the illuminati. No, I am only kidding about the illuminati part. However That doesn't change the fact that seppuku is now my one and only option. If the scriptwriters goal was to kill a young adult with no hope or aspirations for this drama (due to intense grief and an severe case of despair), then kudos to you. Consider your mission complete.

Ahem, virgin comment on DB after maybe.....3 years of reading, hi guys *peeking out*

Wow that was a hell of an episode, too many feeeeels!

I love where we're at plot-wise now, and yay for Soo-Ha kissing HS!
Sidenote: Lee Jong Suk is some seriousssss hotstuff it's nearly impossible to not want to screen capture every single frame he's in.

The only qualms I have, which I think may have been mentioned earlier by others, are:

1) how Kwan Woo came to take the case in the first place? If other lawyers had the right to reject the case, wouldn't he as well, even if the defendant had applied to be assigned to him? It seems implausible that KW is just supposed to take it and isn't allowed to reject the application, citing a conflict of interest as a valid reason.

2) Also, how come Kwan Woo took the bait and gave in to Min Joon Gook's story so easily? Yeah Kwan Woo has always been a stellar defence lawyer because he's always believed in his clients, so it's believable that he's eager to see the good in MJG. It's also believable that he inspected the scene of the crime but couldn't find anything incriminating due to the fire. It just seemed so contradictory that he would believe in MJG's story after all the allusions, specifically when he said, "why do I feel like a knight defending an evil king?" or something along those lines, even after taking the bait. Those do not seem like the words of a lawyer who believes in his client.

But you know what, at the end of the day, I'm just nit-picking because this is otherwise hands-down one of the best, most tightly-written dramas we've seen in a long while, with the holy trinity of great script (which in itself contains the triumvirate of natural dialogue, great pace, and perfectly-timed comedy), great directing (hello yummy close-up shots of beautiful cast members and hello gorgeous compositions! that shot with the yellow flowers in the foreground and Hye Sung blurred out in the background was unexpected for a kdrama!) and most of all, grrreatttt acting from EVERY cast member with great chemistry, tensions are always palpable with these people.

IS IT NEXT WEDNESDAY YET?!?!?!

Hahaha you have been officially comment deflowered!

1) I honestly believe that if Cha really wanted to, he could have avoided the whole Min Joon Gook situation entirely. He was by no means utterly obligated to defend him. It would've been difficult for his position as public defender to make such a refusal, but it would show that he truly cared for Hyesung by not taking the case. In short, yes Kwan Woo could have refused, but for narrative purposes he did not unfortunately.

2) Lol see this, THIS is what frustrates me about the whole Kwan Woo and Joon Gook ordeal. The fact that he CHOSE to believe the potential killer over Hyesung just pissed me off, to be frank. Even though the staged attempted suicide and suicide note got to Kwan Woo's gullible heart after he heard the whole sob story from Min Joon Gook, what about Hyesung? What about her in all of this?

Kwan Woo chose the law over her. And granted that he otherwise is a good man with a lot of reedeming qualities, I would still somewhat root for him--if Sooha didnt exist. But Sooha DOES in fact exist, and he is the man that has Hyesung in his absolute best interests. He would do anything for her. Knowing that such a man loves Hyesung pretty much takes Kwan Woo out of the running of potential hubbies in my opinion because he can never love her like Sooha does.

But yes, this drama is amazing. One of the best of 2013, if not the best. I'm in love <3

My heart, mind, soul and time is sold to this awesome drama! So much happening in one episode that it takes us in a gripping emotional roller-coaster ride... You know, I was getting late for office and my father was nagging me for it (Yes, I am an Asian and live with my parents like everyone one here before marriage) and what I did was take my laptop to the bathroom, run the water and read the recap!
The 'drama' of the story is amazing and the phase at which the drama is moving is so engrossing. Love how the drama's end making us viewers wanting for more and curious at our end.
Su Ha.....the kisss....my heart is all squishy and at the same time torn... I pray that he doesn't fall to the killer's game plan which is obvious. I believe he planned it in advance all along knowing how they will react.... I hope Hye Sung read the signs and stop SuHa....If things goes according to the killer's plan, SuHa will be behind the bars and HySung will be without her license and 'boyfriend'. They will end up alone, without family and friends, angry, vengeful full of hatred....just like him...

Thankfully the drama doesn't linger on the cliche moments for long but gives us something to hope for...Every scene and even the product placement (phone) scenes are well executed in the story and is not forced.
HyeSung and Suha it is!

Thank you girlfriday for the recap. <3

I don't believe in not sacrificing morals for revenge. When someone in your family dies a violent death, and the law is unable to give justice, you take it into your hands.

I'm on Su Ha's side now, and the way it's set up Kwan Woo is part of the reason the killer escapes justice so he is forever not worthy of getting the girl.

Though I know I will not get satisfaction from the show cause the ending will easily be all morals and the stuff, and there will not be a satisfactory end to the killer. Well locked up behind bars and enjoying the taxpayers benefits will just be the worst.

the thing about k drama is i love their characters but there are so many illogical things in the plot that you find it not convincing at all. It makes me feel the writer think we are too dumb.

The way the killer killed the mother and the body not burnt, there is no way that the forensics doctors are unable to determine the true cause of death.

The possibility that she died of accident is nil. Claiming that she got dizzy and fainted which is why she hit her head is ridiculous as the forensic doctor should be able to tell if someone smash her head with a weapon or the person simply knocked onto something and fainted. It is especially weird if she got hit on the head more than once. He definitely hit her before she is unconscious, and definitely hit her again to make her unconscious later. If she simply fainted, how to explain the multiple scars.

Even if they can't tell, he tied her up, there will be scars on her hand which means someone tied her up before she died etc.

Lastly, I don't want them to make Soo Ha a murderer. He is such a sweet character

very good, yet sad and frustrating episode. How could the prosecution go into the case just telling the cellmate to say that JK said he was planning on taking revenge on HS...the follow up questions to that were obvious to me, so they should have been obvious to the supposedly professional lawyers in this show. To me, it would make more sense to say something like JK initially had an outburst or outbursts during which he spoke of revenge or showed anger or resentment or signs of him holding a grudge towards HS....and then later changed his attitude, as per his plan perhaps...and that the cellmate still found his behavior weird and never believed in his sincerity. Or that at some point he broke his facade and showed some sign or signs of resentment...even a smart person can lose themselves momentarily...but to say that he openly spoke of revenge, without it being a crack in his facade, just doesn't make sense...unless maybe they went with him telling his cellmate of his plans out of his faith in him due to the years that they spent together or something....i dunno. But to not even prep him on his story and how to respond to possible questions was stupid. I have no idea what difference it would have made but how could they not even bring up the fact that this was a man who tried to strangle HS to death upon being sent to jail 10 years ago? And if i'm remembering correctly didn't he also talk about taking revenge on her as he did it? Couldn't HS or/and DY have said that this was a man who threatened them with death if they testified against him? I'm no lawyer, but i feel like there had to have been more of a case to have been made...

And of course, like others have said, the investigation of the crime scene and the autopsy of the body should have yielded some very strong evidence. To just brush off all of the obvious wholes in his plan and say that there is no evidence...its gotta be hard for many viewer that put any thought into this show to accept.

Totally agree. And they've asked a lot of witnesses who said MJG was such a kind person and everything, but they could have asked the victim's point of view as well...

Also, I wanted to see the reaction of the two cops who told HS and SH that they could be in peace now, when MJG was moving somewhere far away... to under the same roof as HS's mother. T_T

Ok I'm a mess... Damn it we're only halfway through the show and I am on pins and needles!

This show is just SO GOOD! I get this kind of Gaksital feel again as in > I'm going to be so dead by the end of this show^^

I hate to see mom go (just once I'd love a good parent live trough the whole show :P) but the conflict.... Excellent!

I am worried about Su Ha though. I really don't like his goodbye and the plan to kill Joon Gook because it makes me really nervous.

I have no idea how I am going to handle the second half because seriously the first one was gripping, heartbreaking and swoonworthy like hell^^

Oh and the music.... Another drama that has a really great background music which nicely underlines the scenes <3

And with the whole lawyer oska situation...couldn't they have just been honest with him about the whole situation and told him that they know he did it because SH can read minds...and to prove that to him SH could have just read oska's mind. Then it's just about him being able to trust SH, which i believe that he would be able to do.

i've been thinking about this. i'm pretty sure initially it never crossed HS's mind that she would need to bring up SH's secret to have mr. lawyer trust her word. (her utter shock in front of the statue seems to hint at this). which is the worst and i fully believe that mr. lawyer should have pushed harder to believe HS, let himself hear her out more, rather than just blindly do his job and do the things lawyers do (did he even ask HER about who creeper was? what would he have done if he'd known about the cellphone, for example?).

but it gets a bit puzzling afterwards. Instead of telling mr. lawyer the truth, HS goes to her frenemy. i think SH would have given up his secret if HS had asked. so either 1. HS didn't trust mr. lawyer with that information (the same way she didn't let him see her cry) and/or 2. she valued SH's safety/trust/something more than she did jailing that creep.

Can I just say that, after Episode 8, I personally don't know what mr. lawyer would have done with that information? Like I'm not sure his head would compute or implode. yeah he would have been apologetic. but would he have lied on the stand? would he have stopped advocating? would he have lived with himself having done any of the above? there's a weird evasiveness about his actions and his lawyer delusions. he does not have darkness like HS and SH or even lawyer Shin (the boss?) have darkness. and this is why i think, in this universe where HS has gone through so much, she cannot be with someone as black and white as mr. lawyer (even though in a perfect world, they would fit).

so yeah for story purposes Autumn makes a good point and it's probably the more salient reason. but it would be cool if it had character-level meaning, too :)
