Basketball serves up special pre-show documentary episode

Upcoming tvN period drama Basketball is set in a turbulent time in Korea’s history—Japan’s occupation in the 1940s, the independence movement, the division of the two Koreas—and while the era is fascinating, it’s true that we don’t see much of those years depicted in dramaland. So it’s actually smart planning, in my opinion, for tvN to schedule in a preceding special broadcast in advance of Basketball’s premiere to help fill in the gaps about what the time was like before we jump into the drama proper.

This broadcast isn’t the same thing as Answer Me 1994′s Episode 0—that special was an introduction to the characters and relationships of that show. Rather, this one’s a documentary programmed specially for (prospective) viewers of Basketball, to help ground the world the show is set in and to set the stage for the historical events going on at the time. I am a BIG FAN of this idea.

It’s a smart move given that ratings tend to swing toward the easy-to-watch dramas, and a lot of the densely packed narrative shows find it hard to gain traction in the ratings game. This will be a crowded timeslot (up against rom-com Mi-rae’s Choice, quirky drama Suspicious Housekeeper, and large-scale sageuk Empress Ki) so I don’t expect Basketball to command huge ratings even for a cable show, but this edition of Drama Cliffs Notes is still a welcome addition.

The Basketball documentary will air on Monday, October 14. Basketball will premiere the following week, on October 21.

i think its a great idea as well.
I just don't like the girl casting atttt alll. I also dislike her princess-y look here. urghhh. The girl looks so not Korean? Like...plastic. Not Korean as in, not up to the beauty standards of back in that day.
Sighhh

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to this show. I love sports movies and the occupation period is always fascinating. The thing I'm most interested about is seeing how these largely young unknown actors perform.

Hello SH,
This, "The thing I’m most interested about is seeing how these largely young unknown actors perform." I have found them (the largely unknown actors) often to be better or as good as some of the well known or more popular actors and actresses are, tbh.

I 2nd all that you said.

I'm looking forward to this drama even though I'm not that interested in sports. Looks like this year will be the year I try out new dramas that I usually don't watch at all (medical dramas, Hong sister dramas, and now sports dramas).

I've said it before and will say it again, I'm ridiculously excited for this drama - this year has been pretty poor in the Quality Offerings department (with a couple of exceptions, of course). I hope this special will be subbed, as was Reply 1994's.

Thanks for the news!!

I hafta say, that's a really good idea. Nothing like improving our understanding of the context to improve our appreciation of a drama. Thumbs up!! :)

This is great. Such an era definitely needs explanation for their viewers, especially the international ones who are pretty sparse in their knowledge of Korean history. I'd watch it even if I wasn't interested in the drama, which I am. Bring it on.

They could not have thought up something more interesting as far as I am concern, to introduce this new presentation. For those that know really nothing about this period of Korea's history, it will help a lot with time and placement. I really hope those of us that are not able to get it locally, will be able at some point to see it, to better appreciate and understand the people and culture.
