EPISODE 10: “It might be the last”

It’s 2013, and we’re still watching the neverending wedding video. This time we get as far as the daddy-daughter walk down the aisle, at the end of which Dad has this hilarious kneejerk moment, refusing to hand Na-jung over to the bridegroom(’s stand-in). That’s cute.

Thirty-nine-year-old Na-jung sends her hubby a sly wink across the room, and of course each of our bachelor candidates reacts to it. Is anybody else tired of this one-trick pony joke?

1994. Dad’s baseball team wins the Korean Series, after which he prepares celebratory liquor to drink on their next victory. To which Mom asks, “Who knows when you’ll win again?” LOL.

Na-jung narrates:

“The last time always happens without the realization that it’s the last time. Perhaps the reason that last times always hurt our hearts is out of sadness for not realizing the moment as it passes by. In the fall of 1994, Dad’s Seoul Twins brought in their last win. And the age of twenty, which we’d felt would last forever, was approaching its last season without us realizing it.

“Our hearts were racing with new challenges, our hearts were blazing, and we had no fear. That thrill, fire, and fearlessness that only being twenty can bring—without realizing how precious they are, we lived the last season of being twenty.”

Fast-forwarding to December 30, we land on a snowy morning. Na-jung bolts out of bed and runs to wake Oppa, so giddy with excitement that she forgets for a moment that things aren’t quite as they used to be. She stops herself for a second, but Garbage stirs and she reverts to her cheery self, delighting in the sight of the snow.

They sit on his bed looking out his window, until Na-jung returns to her somber mood and broaches the subject. Referencing Yoon-jin’s drunken outing of her secret, Na-jung says that it’s true that she likes him. He doesn’t react outwardly, and after a few moments of waiting for some sort of response (Oppaaaaa, you are so frustrating), she buries her face in her hands feeling embarrassed.

Garbage starts to say something in a tone that is not encouraging, but Na-jung cuts him off in a hurry. She says he doesn’t have to say anything and that she’s not asking for him to like her back—she just wants him to know how she feels. Mortified over her confession, Na-jung then clings to Oppa for comfort, which is so the perfect expression of her confused feelings.

Na-jung steps out as Chilbongie comes down the stairs, and his face falls to see where she’s coming from. He’s heading out, so she motions him close until he’s leaning over her, then pulls up his hood to cover his head, telling him happily that it’s snowing outside. And with that, his mood is restored. Smile, Chilbongie, smile!

Dad cooks this morning instead of very pregnant Mom… which explains everyone’s quizzical looks at breakfast: icy noodles in the heart of winter. Oh, pregnancy cravings, are you ever not funny? Samcheonpo worries about brain freeze and Haitai tries to grab his parka, though Dad barks at them to just eat already.

Garbage sits next to Na-jung and gives her the usual pat on the head, but today that platonic pat hurts. Chilbongie notices Na-jung’s sinking spirits.

Haitai has received free movie tickets and invites everyone to join him, but most of the kids have other plans. Only half of them head out to see the movie, and then last-minute plan changes cut the group further till it’s only Garbage and Na-jung who actually make it to the theater.

Na-jung spends most of the movie looking longingly at Oppa, but he seems determined to ignore the pink elephant and laughs up a storm without looking at her. With sinking heart, Na-jung confirms her suspicions with Yoon-jin later—Oppa doesn’t see her as a woman, does he? Yoon-jin gives it to her straight: Nope.

Na-jung confides that she was so frazzled that she doesn’t even know what movie she saw, and swears Yoon-jin to secrecy about everything. I have to laugh at Yoon-jin’s solemn claim that she is super good at keeping secrets. Though it’s sweet that she means it?

Samcheonpo’s father calls to check that his son is coming home for the new year, and gets along great with bubbly Na-jung. So when Dad asks whether she has a boyfriend, then whether she’d like to see Samcheonpo (the city), I have to laugh. Parents will forever be matchmaking.

It’s the promise of fresh-caught seafood that has Na-jung’s eyes bulging, and the next thing we know, Samcheonpo’s got a crew of tagalongs, who’ve all been invited home with him.

It’s New Year’s Eve when the foursome leave—Samcheonpo, Haitai, Na-jung, and Yoon-jin—while the other three have to stay in Seoul for personal reasons. But then Chilbongie’s interview with a scout gets pushed a day due to the snowfall, and Garbage’s presentation is canceled. I love the way their faces both light up slowly at the unexpected free day, and both boys take off running. Aww.

Samcheonpo’s parents greet the friends with a welcome spread to rival anything Mom has ever put together, the table loaded with mountains of fresh seafood. Samcheonpo’s parents give Haitai the seal of approval for his politeness, and are already eyeing Na-jung as a prospective daughter-in-law, approving of her enthusiasm and monstrous appetite. I love the way she eats; there’s no joke to it other than the sheer sight gag, but it’s hilarious.

It’s a stark contrast with Yoon-jin, who picks at her food and eats silently. She gets chillier reception and a lot of disapproving glances.

Haitai assures Dad that their absent friends are surely regretting not coming along, just as we cut to Seoul. The boys dash out of their respective buildings with fun on their minds—Chilbongie beelines for a bus to Samcheonpo, while Garbage… joins his buddies at the pool hall? Aw, my heart actually sank at that. I feel like my Oppa just disappointed me personally.

The city of Samcheonpo is currently in the middle of a dispute with neighboring Sacheon; the two are set to merge, but argue over whose name gets to remain. Dad is involved in the demonstration and suggests that the kids join him, since protests are what college kids do.

Samcheonpo, Haitai, and Na-jung arrive at the demo with an “Are you kidding me?” look splashed across their faces—the demo is more of a trot dance party than anything, middle-aged ajummas and ajusshis dancing joyously with their protests signs. Dad is all, We don’t know anything about demos, what do you suggest?

Cut to: Our trio leading the bunch, leading them in a group dance. Haha. The police officers standing guard actually shake their heads at the sight, but the gathering does get into the spirit of things, following along. At least the dancing is synchronized now?

At home, Samcheonpo’s mother takes a break from shucking shellfish to take a phone call, and when she comes out Yoon-jin is there in her seat, shucking away deftly. What mother would be immune to that? Mom’s chilliness melts bit by bit as she and Yoon-jin sit side by side with the clams, bonding and chatting.

The dance party—er, demo—is in full swing when a bus roars up and soldiers pour up with riot shields and tear gas at the ready. Ohhh crap. Armed guard does not seem to be the appropriate response to a little trot dancing, but all of a sudden the mood turns serious and Dad leads the protesters in a chant. Now this feels like a real demo.

Chilbongie arrives in the neighborhood and narrowly escapes a run-in with the town drunk who rages about his wife leaving. The ajusshi tries to pick a fight with Chilbongie for looking at him wrong, but thankfully Chilbongie gets directed to Samcheonpo’s home by a friendly ajumma who gives him the warning to beware of the grandma of the house: “You’ll find out why.” Uh…

It’s a stand-off at the demonstration: The riot officers line up ready to act, and the protestors face them in tense silence. There’s a funny moment when a protestor recognizes a soldier as his nephew and starts in on a scolding, and in the process a grenade tumbles to the ground and rolls to Na-jung’s feet… and the uncle-nephew pair realize the pin has been pulled in their tussle. Ruh-roh.

It takes a comically long moment before anybody reacts, and then the grenade emits a huge cloud of smoke that sends everyone to the ground in coughing fits. Na-jung gets a particularly strong whiff and falls, and Haitai carries her off on his back. Hahaha. This is actually a case of the preview making the episode funnier, because I was expecting a serious turn and instead we get Hilariously Incompetent College Demo.

At the house, Grandma brings Chilbongie dinner, and sits verrrrry close as she serves him. He awkwardly tries to keep her at arm’s length without offending, but it’s sort of a losing battle. It’s equal parts uncomfortable and amusing.

Outside, Mom hears with relief that Chilbongie is a nice boy, because I guess that means he’ll put up with Grandma’s habits gracefully. Mom explains that Grandma looooves men, particularly good-looking ones, and was the last gisaeng of Joseon. Lol. That certainly explains her brand of sly coquettishness, old age notwithstanding.

Grandma gets close and touchy-feely, but at Chilbongie’s questions about her husband, the flirtatiousness drops as she gets thoughtful. Grandma hears his age and thinks wistfully to her own youth, saying that if she were twenty again, “I would tell the person I liked that I liked him.”

She explains that she grew up next door to an oppa who was best friends with her brother—he was like a brother to her until one day she started thinking of him differently and couldn’t get him out of her mind. Back in those days girls couldn’t just confess their feelings openly, so Grandma kept her feelings to herself and liked him on her own. This sounds familiar, and judging from the look on Chilbongie’s face, he seems to make the connection too.

But that oppa got drafted into the army, and she eventually married Samcheonpo’s grandfather. Her husband left, though, to be with a woman he’d been madly in love with from before his marriage.

Grandma speaks with the peace of an old woman who’s put her resentments behind her, saying that the man she once hated now seems pitiful to her. And as time passes, she thinks back to that time when she was twenty: “If I knew that I’d regret it so much in my old age, I would have just told him I liked him, as a final farewell.”

Haitai runs home carrying Na-jung, and tends to her as she sleeps off the effects of the gassing. Meanwhile at the protest, the mayor requests a meeting with civilian representatives from both cities, and Samcheonpo gets nominated—he’s the educated Seoul boy who’ll know how to talk all fancy-like. Ha, this is probably a bad time to mention the three F’s you just got, isn’t it?

In the conference room, the Samcheonpo vs. Sacheon argument rages on as the ajusshi reps from each city argue that their city name is better. It’s a back and forth of “Mine is better!” and “No, mine!” until Samcheonpo speaks up. They quiet, waiting expectantly to see what the city boy will say.

Samcheonpo agrees diplomatically that both cities have a point, so instead of choosing one over the other, how about they merge the two names? Keeping in mind that sam also means three and sa means four, he helpfully offers up the alternative: Chilcheonpo, which is to say, Sevencheonpo. Bwahaha. I laughed till it hurt.

The neighborhood drunk has stepped up his threats to kill himself, and this time he’s ready to act on it. His long-suffering wife begs Samcheonpo’s mother to help, and they race to the beach where he’s attempting to drown himself. It’s Chilbongie who goes after him, struggling to drag him in amid the drunkard’s shouting and resisting.

The effort lands Chilbongie in the sickbed with the shivers and a cough. Stirring to take some medicine, he notices Na-jung sleeping nearby and inches closer to her side of the room… little by little… and falls asleep next to her. Aww.

Samcheonpo’s mother has warmed up to Yoon-jin considerably and gives her some after-dinner coffee. We’d previously learned that a drop of coffee keeps her up all night, so when Mom urges her to drink up, she hesitates. Samcheonpo starts to intervene, but then Yoon-jin drinks up and compliments Mom, who beams. I love Samcheonpo’s reaction to this, smiling and looking at Yoon-jin in a new light.

Chilbongie has to take a late bus to Seoul to make his morning interview, and Na-jung insists on taking him to the terminal. Grandma’s reluctant to send him off, and when he promises to come back next vacation, she says that thing that always kills me about grandparents: “Will I still be alive to see you then?”

Na-jung: “There were days when Haitai, Sung-kyun, and Yoon-jin would come in with puffy eyes. Days when, even after coming into the boardinghouse, they’d be choked up all day. They were days when they’d gone back to their hometowns. Saying goodbye is sad and strange. Parting ways is never something you get used to. And if it’s a goodbye that you don’t know will be the last, even if it’s just one day’s connection, it’s still bound to leave you reeling. In 1994, on the last day before saying goodbye to being twenty, we said a goodbye that might become the last. And we spent a fateful night that might become the last.”

Na-jung and Chilbongie set out with linked arms. Waiting for the bus and with five minutes till midnight, Na-jung wonders why Chilbongie bothered to take a six-hour bus ride to spend a mere few hours here. He looks at her, his reason so obvious, and asks, “Are you dumb?” Omo. Confession time.

Chilbongie asks, “Why do you think I came?” He says it plainly this time, “I like you. That’s why I came.” He knows she likes someone else and isn’t asking for her feelings in return, “But if I didn’t tell you today, I thought I might regret it.” Through this all Na-jung has been sitting silently, taking it in, maybe not even completely shocked.

He looks up in time to catch the last 10 seconds of 1994, and counts down with the clock. He wishes her a happy new year, and then bends down to kiss her.

Na-jung: “First love, and age twenty. Could there be anything as delicate and heart-thumping as those things? On December 31, 1994, our twentieth year came to an end, and our first loves awaited a new start.”

Back in Seoul, Garbage gets a page while he’s playing pool with his buddies. It’s Puppy Binggeure asking him to see a late-night movie, and Garbage hesitates for a long moment before saying yes and heading off to the theater.

Binggeure belatedly realizes that Garbage already saw one of the movies earlier with Na-jung… and strangely, Garbage hesitates to answer. Then he agrees to see the same movie again, saying that he doesn’t remember anything about it—which is the same thing Na-jung said when she spent the time too flustered about Oppa to concentrate on the screen.

New Year’s Day. Samcheonpo’s father prepares a special boat ride for the kids, who had been excited until realizing that it came with a 5 a.m. roll call. So when the friends don’t make it out to the pier on time, Dad decides to head out with Samcheonpo… just as Yoon-jin arrives. Samcheonpo watches with a goofy grin on his face.

They sit at the boat’s prow watching the sunrise, making wishes. He scoffs at Yoon-jin’s Seo Taiji-related wish, the admits that his own was to have his first kiss. Samcheonpo checks to see his father sleeping in the cabin and says, “But it came true.” And he leans in and kisses Yoon-jin.

Na-jung: “Like our first kisses that we couldn’t have foreseen, that’s how our loves that couldn’t be predicted, our twenty-first year, and 1995 began.”

Back to 2013. After some prodding, Na-jung agrees to open up Dad’s prized victory liquor, which he’s been waiting twenty years to drink. (They’ll just top it off with soju, they say, and he’ll never know the difference. I do hope we’re around when Dad finds out.)

Yoon-jin gets a call from her mother-in-law with the news that Grandma is getting married yet again, at the ripe old age of 102. Oh, she didn’t die? Chilbongie asks about that oppa Granny loved and couldn’t forget after he got called to war. Samcheonpo clarifies that that’s not why they separated—it’s because that man was married. Pwahaha. He says that you can’t trust anything Granny says, and Chilbongie marvels at having been hoodwinked all these years.

COMMENTS

In case you’re wondering, Koreans count age by the new year, so everybody moves up together. It’s why in social contexts people only really care about the year in which you were born, since you all sort of age together and say goodbye to a particular age at the same time. So while the West does also see New Year’s as a time to wipe the slate clean and start fresh, there’s an added layer of meaning in Korean stories because it’s tied in directly to the concept of age and growing up.

Twenty is an important year in that it often marks your graduation from high school and entry into college and adulthood. A story about turning twenty would be more about the concrete divide between child and adult, legal minority and majority. So moving on from twenty is a subtler version of that coming-of-age concept, of clearing out the lingering traces of childhood and puppy love, which is a nice expression of today’s theme.

Yay for Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin! Of all things, I love that what opened their eyes to each other was their kindness to each other’s mothers; there’s a lovely reciprocity to that. The show could’ve chosen to couple them up soon after the incident with Yoon-jin’s mute mother, but I appreciate having them back at each other’s throats and fighting like normal, until the romantic realization came to both of them. Timing really is such a key element in romantic love, and it’s nice to see them developing at their own paces.

That’s also the reason for all the angst in the main romance, since everybody’s feeling everything on varying timetables. I don’t think we’re dealing with a lack of interest on any side, so it’s more about being ready to be in a certain place at the same time as your partner, and nobody in the main trio has managed the trick of that yet.

Not that we’re getting any clarity on Garbage’s own feelings, which remain frustratingly (and deliberately) opaque. I really hope the drama explores his inner thoughts with the same attention (and voiceovers) given to the others, and soon! While I think we all adore him as a character, it’s starting to feel as though the mystery of his feelings is being kept up to cloud the plot more than to serve his character. Which is to say, I fear that the writers are keeping him from us just so they can “trick” us later, which feels manipulative and not organic to the story. A twist is great if you don’t compromise your narrative integrity for it, but once you do things in service of a twist, you’ve let the plot machinations trample over your characters. And that’s what it feels like the show is starting to do with all its fake-outs and long, long meanderings.

We are willing to give Garbage the benefit of the doubt and attribute ALL SORTS of possible explanations for his behavior, but a lot of that comes from our affection for him and not from the actual text itself. I’m sure Garbage has good reasons… but at what point am I just making excuses for him and arguing, literally, “Oppa didn’t mean it”?

Not that his behavior is inherently bad. He’s a college student who may not be in complete touch with his own feelings, and he’s not trying to hurt Na-jung. But guys who send mixed messages and then deliberately hide behind a facade of ignorance wear on my last nerve, because could you maybe just have a spine? You don’t even have to take the grand leap of faith or make big declarations—it would just be nice if he didn’t actively muddy the waters further. There’s a difference between being ignorant of your feelings, and feigning ignorance to avoid dealing with the matter, and I fear Oppa’s headed into the latter territory.

There’s nothing wrong with Garbage choosing to chill with his friends on his day off, especially since he’s older than the others and has his own social circle. Still, I do have to admit to being disappointed that he isn’t the guy whose first desire was to join the gang, our gang. Given that setup, though, it was sweet for Garbage’s choice to ultimately be with Binggeure (in a platonic way, though I know there’s an active minority who reads that relationship as potentially gay. Personally I’m not getting that from the show).

That difference doesn’t mean Chilbongie is the better man for going to Samcheonpo; it just made me really happy that he was the guy who would choose that readily. Which mirrors the way that he chooses Na-jung without reservation, without hesitation. And how can you root against somebody like that?

I am excited to see the promise of first loves ending and new loves coming on the horizon, and it’s not because I’m upset with Oppa right now. I could even still support him as the eventual husband, perhaps after they work out whatever it is that needs working out. But in this time and place, I want Na-jung to be twenty-one and happy and adored, and you know what, I know exactly where she can get that.

This is why I love your site more than the other ones that do recaps. For a non-korean like me, I very much appreciate the sociological and cultural relevance of what is happening, like what New Year means to you guys. I also like your writing style, very wise and clean, I mean it doesn't look like the recaps and reports, insights and reviews are written by some teenager who has nothing better to do. Keep up your great work, I for one look forward to your posts. Thanks

Gosh, I love this drama. There are too many heartwarming scenes such as the ones between YJ + SCP's mom. She saw past the tsundere exterior and got to know a little bit about her future daughter-in-law, and I just loved how they were able to relate so well. Such a cute family.

As for the OTP -- I'm all for Chilbong, but Oppa is slowly making his way into the game. His comment about missing the plot of the movie was an especially big hint about his feelings, so like many others have said it sounds like he will dominate the second half with grand gestures and maybe a confession. I just hope Bong-ah isn't the normal second lead plot device to get the NJ/Trash ship sailing.

Also, the revelation of Halmoni's lie also gives me hope that NJ won't be romantically linked to Trash forever. But it could also mean CB will get over his first love too and NOOOOO.

They are so stingy with Oppa scenes.

How much do we really know about him? NOTHING.

They need to give us more more more before we sail.

Yes, I also think that oppa will reveal his feelings later we are just kept in dark - don't know for how long... However, hopefully it won't be a usual second lead plot and NJ will develop romantic feelings for CB, even if it takes longer for her to realize this new love...

Thank you for the recap and for loving this show so much.

As handsome, athletic, ambitious, sweet and loving the two of these men are, I would prefer Oppa.
Bottom (or top) line, he would be a better match in the sack. :)
It's those hands of his, and the ease that he kissed Bing, and all that knowledge he has about Anatomy...Oooph. He's the man for me NAJUNG.

Don't shush me. I know this isn't the way we are supposed to look at leads, or maybe it is, but my thoughts and imagination ** sigh ** are leading me to Team Oppa, if and when he decides to admit his feelings.

I am not saying that CB isn't one sexy guy, but, but, but it's Trash-magnetism...Team Oppa for me.

Agree about the whole magnetism theory. LOL
On paper, chilbongie is the PERFECT son-in-law, friend, boyfriend, husband. He's the kinda guy you want more in k-dramaland. If he was going up against the likes of someone like Kim Joo Won(Hyun Bin) or Gu Jun Pyo i would pick chilbongie without a moment's hesitation.

But somehow the writer has managed to give us a perfect but imperfect trash oppa, which makes it SUPER hard to pick between the two. Even if show is being super stingy lately on oppa scenes, he's got that pull that has me hooked and proper.

i'm already preparing my heart for oppa-najung endgame... i think i might stop watching once they get together because i really don't think i'd be able to watch chilbong being rejected or sad :( i think najung would date him for a while and but she'd never stop liking oppa so chilbong will step aside for oppa... just thinking about it makes me so sad and angry :(

I freakin' love Chilbong and his go-forth attitude. Can't help rooting for him! This series is so enduring that I can't help loving every character. I hope Oppa starts opening up. Everyone is except him!

Its dramas like this that make me want to tear my hair out while simultaneously praising its ability to make me hyper-impatient for the next episode (so I can tear my hair out all over again). It is obvious that the writer and director are having fun with us by manipulating us towards a major second guessing fest. We are left to assume a lot but then thrown another crumb that will dizzyingly spin us in opposite direction.

Notwithstanding my disclaimer, I am so in love with this drama. I want to get to the end but I never want it to end. I thought there could never be one better than 1997, but here it is. In 1997, we assumed from day one who would end up with whom. In 1994, forget about it – I don’t feel confident about anyone, except that mom and dad will continue to be together 20 years later and their son, Sooki Sooki, grows up to be really cute and a player.

So many opened ended questions: Is or isn’t Trash, you know, gay? Maybe no No (he is hanging with Baro to help him become confident), maybe yes. or Yes (they are going into a relationship)? Is Korean TV ready for that? Does she end up with Haitai, who hasn’t even been thrown into the mix yet, but he is ready with the condoms. I’m all over the place.

I cannot look up the correct spelling of their names, so apologies ahead of time.

When I watch Oppa with Na Jung, I totally root for them. When Na Jung is with Chilbong, I root for them too. I like her even with Hai Tai (it would be really interesting, but maybe it's to late to gain the favor of the public).

too much stress changing my mind every scene. So I just decided to watch and be happy whatever happens...

I was starting to think that Chilbong could be the husband until Trash revealed at the end of the episode that he didn't remember the movie he saw with Na Jung. Now I'm back to believing that Trash is the husband.

Here too... the writers are definitely messing with our heads ...The storyline for NaJung's loveline is like a pendulum ...Chilbongie one moment and Trash the next ...

It is as if they realized that '97 was kinda more obvious ...so they're making up for that here ....

This episode got me thinking – for all that Chilbongie does for Na-jung and Oppa “not” doing anything, it highlights the difference between first love (Chilbongie) and familial love (Trash Oppa). If we all remember our first “grand” love, we do anything and everything to be with that person which is exactly what Chilbongie is doing. But in the process he disregarded all reason, including potentially injuring himself and not being at his best form when the scouts from the pro baseball show up, and possibly altering his future as a pro baseball player and perhaps he would rethink his actions that day. I’m thinking this may be weaved into the storyline on the next few episodes, just because they refer to him being a future baseball star in the past, and in 2013 I don’t remember them alluding to that at all. I don’t think he will regret his confession to Na-jung, perhaps just the timing of it all would cause some sort of friction between them, maybe?

Trash Oppa may have been around the block a few times (citing his ex-gf on the earlier episode) to know what is at stake by giving in to his feelings to Na-jung, but this is of course deliberately fuzzy from our POV. I could see why THAT could be a hindrance in acknowledging his feelings that are there, but am not sure if that is a big enough reason why one would withhold from revealing true feelings for someone other than to serve the show’s plot. I think I’ll be a bit disappointed if that’s how the show goes, but I’m also hoping the writers would let Oppa-ya would step up his game and be a worthy contender to Chilbongie. At this point, I just want to KNOW how he feels towards Na-jung instead of watching that darned wedding video.

Although I’m loving Chilbongie right now, I still think the writers will do a bait and switch and Oppa will get Na-jung in the end. But I honestly don’t know if I want to be right or wrong on that one :P

4 scenarios why Trash can't confess:
1) he's gay or bi
2) he has a fiance arranged by his family
3) he got his ex pregnant
4) he's impotent; which may explain the mystery of the two kids we haven't seen.

Most people are only frustrated because of the husband scenario but for a 20 episode drama, you can't expect to learn anything until the 12th or 13th episode; but for a drama that's based on the unknown, I think everyone who's interested should just chill and wait for it!

"4 scenarios why Trash can’t confess:
1) he’s gay or bi"

This is stupid. He could confess if he was be and he liked the girl. Sure if he's gay he doesn't like women, but if he's bi, that means he can fall in love with women and men as well so i dont see how would that keep him from confessing?

Yes there were 3 kids... Na-jung, Trash Oppa and Hoon Oppa which is Na-jung's real brother on the pictures in the earlier episodes At least I thought that's what Na-jung was saying in her voiceover. Not sure where the 2 sibling storyline came from?

In one of the episodes with chilbongie sitting down across the table with na jung, he mentions that she has three kids (in response to her potty mouth).
I foresee them making an appearance sometime in the future.

The one major(but small) hint that has yet to have been brought up is the implication that chilbongie is the perfect son-in-law while trash on the other hand not quite.
There's that stark contrast while they were getting ready for breakfast... with appa asking why chilbongie can't just be his son-in-law already. Then trash oppa walks in all trash like and gets scolded.. That familiarity hits it RIGHT on the dot in k-dramaland and real life.
This writer likes to troll the audience and she also likes to troll her characters. Thus, it is very likely for sung dong il (appa) to get stuck with someone like trash oppa as a son-in-law.

Required fields are marked *

As a Chilbong fan, I definitely noted that and it did worry me because like you said, it would be just like the writer to reverse expectation and have Trash be Sung Dong Il's son-in-law instead. But if Chilbong was the husband, the context of the scene where Appa would just not let Na Jeong would have that added hilarity in that just when his wish to have Chilbong as his son-in-law is finally coming true, he's not so eager for it after all. So that's also another possibility for the writer to troll both us and her characters.

oppa doesn't see binggrae in that way because he totally has a thing for our girl (i actually thought he was gonna confess when she stopped him) but binggrae is most deffo into him. that's pretty clear to me. so strange how much i rooted for oppa and now it feels like the writers are making him go so downhill as a candidate for her that it's not even fair. it's not really. he should be shown in a more decent light but it's working because now i am shipping chilbongie all the way. i hope they redeem oppa because i truly saw a lot in him in the start. and yoo jin and her man. CAN I JUST SAY HOW MUCH THAT MOMENT MELTED MY HEART. get yo man girl!

and haitai... let's just say that he better be stalking about yoo jin in that preview because no way am i having him butting in this triangle that is enough of a mess as it is. i swear he better not even go there!

@javabeans Please tell me when did Garbage send mix messages? He has not change since the first episode, just because Na Jung did a 360 does not mean that Garbage have to follow suit. What have Na-Jung done any differently then what she has been doing, when she only saw him as a brother! Yes episode 10 she told Garage what Yoon-Jin said was true but for her it was confirmation for him it was shocking!

JavaBeans stated “This mirrors the way that Chilbongie chooses Na-Jung without reservation, without hesitation. And how can you root against somebody like that?”

Okay, I guess it just me! Garbage doesn’t like her, like her knowing “NOW” what he knows is why Garbage is such a caring person. Garbage “WITH” reservation and WITH hesitation did not go to a place he would have love to be, but for him it about Na-Jung being comfortable and not making her more confused. The last thing in the world Garbage wants to do is be the cause of Na-Jung pain. Garbage choice not go is more endearing because it shows how much he really care for her that he would put aside the things that also bring him joy which is friends and family. Garbage giving Na-Jung space or maybe Garbage is the one that need some time to come to term with this change of event. Chilbongie actions to me don’t mirror anything other then the fact he like her, when you like a person you do things without reservation and without hesitation but when you love a person everything you do is with reservation and with hesitation because you are giving thought to that person feeling before yourself.

I just wish people don't assume any thing about Garbage that the storyline hasn't show with fact... For me the 10 episodes only confirmed that Na-Jung like Garbage and Chilbongie like Na-Jung and Garbage love Na-Jung as a sister, but he just not into her is there anything wrong with that? She has Chilbongie people should be happy with that!

I agree on this observation. And I do believe that there are situations and people who are like that, because for one, I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT MYSELF. Im not saying that this is gonna happen in Reply 1994. Ive stated before that the writers are very clever on penning and trolling us around, jerking our hearts in frustration..... , which is part of the fun in watching this drama. And yes, in the real world , it doesnt mean that your first love would be your last. So, CB fills the bill perfectly.
But, I like Oppa because I guess I personally can relate to his personality being in a shroud of mystery, almost vague and periodically frustrating. But it doesnt mean it ends there. We are only halfway through the series. If sweet Chilbonge becomes eventually the husband , I wont be disappointed either since his character is not being a 2nd lead at all. I think Reply 1994 is showing that there are two paths are infront of Na-Jung, and these paths are neither bad. That there are two leads here. Two good contenders. Samcheonpo did once pointed a very poignant lesson when it comes to life and love:

“Whichever path you choose, there are always lingering thoughts of the road not taken. That’s why there are no choices without regrets, and no one right answer to life. All you can do is believe that the road you’ve chosen is the right answer, and turn it into the right answer. The right answer to life is to believe that you don’t regret your past choices and live on.”

We all have our own preferences and our own dream prince for Princess Na-jung.

And how I laughed when one netizen mentioned, what if Haitai turns out to be the hubby. LMAO. Now , that would make k-drama history. The underdog gets the Princess.

I love Chilbonge for his tenacity and honesty.
I love Oppa because underneath that ambivalence there is depth there.
Taber has a point. If there is a winner at this time, it is the writers.

I'm in the Chilbongie-Na Jung ship it's not even funny. It sucks because I have a very strong intuition that Oppa will be the husband in the end. Like, I was all right with RM1997 because it's obvious that Tae Woong is not a very good contender to Yoon Jae as a love interest, but...omg. I really much, much prefer Chilbongie as Na Jung's lover, compared to Oppa because their relationship feels more platonic than romantic. I geddit that writernim's trying to make him one, but no, not for me.
I actually wasn't really sold on the Yoonjae-Shiwon relationship in the end, too.
Like, I'm so firmly stuck on this ship that if writernim do make Najung-Oppa the endgame, I am going to feel so depressed. I am one of those who WILL see this drama in a different, less shining light if my OTP doesn't make it to the end.
Nothing against JungWoo as an actor, as he is one of the very few (like Song Joong Ki and Son Ye Jin, imo) who has a very natural ability to act.
I find Oppa compelling as a character, and am curious about him, but Chilbongie is THE ONE imo for Na Jung.

I completely agree with PhoenixSB. Oppa had a smile and touched look on his face when najeong confessed her feelings. The scene made me cry because you could tell Oppa was holding something back and not allowing himself to tell her he liked her too. I agree with the others in that the back story is probably that the real oppa died and he wasn't able to save him. So he feelings responsible.
Though Chilbong is better looking but I still want it to be Oppa. He's the underdog with the emotional issues so I think the writers will choose him

you know what sad in this drama, the reality they've shown
the truth is heart doesn't always understand what our brain has collected as data
no matter how close you are before, how you understand him/her
or no matter how hard you try or he/she try to reach you,
if your heart doesn't feel the vibe, you'll not choose him/her

so back on SCP narration, for every choice you've made, try to make it best but just don't regret it
now we see them happy in 2013, what do we wish for?

unlike any other drama who deal with sad or happy ending, hope everyone realize that this drama ended up happy

Did you guys notice the groom (stand in) ? His hair isn't dyed but yeah...I do think na jung loves oppa and is not currently considering cb as her love interest.

What Oppa said in the preview will def strike us in the next ep, and it feels like na jung will end up getting hurt and will seek comfort from Haitae.

Remember- they did not get married until less than a decade later from 1994. Anything could change the plot. Can't wait!!

Trash, really loves her. He is the one willing to do what he thinks is best for her. He understands her the most and wants to take care of her. But he is Trash, even Dad thinks that something is wrong with him. He thinks that he is not good enough for her. Chilbongie likes her, he thinks this is what he wants for now. So when he gets the call for his career, he wants her to come with him because it is all about him. Trash will be there to comfort her after she does not go because he is always there for her. She ends up with Oppa because they both finally realise that he is not Trash.

There are many hints (arms, heads, the hand, the athletic walk, wedding rings and even the milk in the fridge) that can point out that its...omg its Oppa...errr...no "that physique looks like CB"???

Ive seen these kind of scenes in movies where the writers try to jerk your mind around. Im not saying that its CB but Im not saying its Oppa as well. That kinda make me sound that I dont have a principle (im on the Oppa ship).LOL

What Im trying to say...that the writers are gonna play with our heads. For all we know they are using body doubles? Its a mind game.
How about the ring? Good gracious. Ive been trying to spot which guy has a ring on their fingers. They are sure not showing. Its brilliant I think. They are misleading us for entertainment. Sounds like a masochist statement, but boy , the writers are gonna twist it around and make us cry until...OMG...its......."Who knows?"

This...Ive learned a great lesson on "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens.

Present Chilbongie's hair color and the stand in's hair color plus the back of the head haircut killed it for me--I spent time taking snapshots based on skin color and back of the head. If that's not it, they have some serious explaining to do.

Chibongie's and Oppa's back of the head DO NOT MATCH. In the present or in the past. =P

Chilbongie changed his hair, but Oppa didn't, not once. I'm fairly sure after that. Also, the skin color match ups and even the hand shape and veins... otherwise they got a really poor stand in. ^.~

Skin color does not match on Chilbongie and Oppa. They didn't even try to get a different skin color.

But not saying the answer to spare people who like the tension.

From the zero episode, they filmed the whole thing already. Scenes from episode 6 and 7, showed up in the zero episode. The actors are so playing with you. They know by now, but I would suspect a gag order to not reveal it, and they might even be contracted to play along with everyone. Plus the three act structure pretty much gives it up at this point. (Which they followed religiously last time.) It's also very expensive to have to refilm it. So I doubt they did, because last time they did panning to the side as the line was going, which costs more. And last time they said they didn't know either, but that was a clear lie.

Plus last time, they threw in the red herring from Yoon Yoon Jae, saying he hoped that someone else would win his character... and I knew that was a red herring.

Noonchi, ne?

There is NO way they used any of the husband candidates to film the groom scenes. They purposely used other actors/standins to keep everyone guessing. The only thing the actor had to be was tall enough. Hair, skin, other color only approximate.

A gag order MAY work if we were talking about just the leads - who have everything to lose by revealing the secret ending, but when you have hundreds of humans on set in a studio working while filming, from catering to make-up to delivery guys - any of them could snap a quick cell photo and share it with the world in seconds.

I was just thinking, too, they don't have to match everything from those scenes, btw. They can keep only showing everyone's back and then film the post wedding scenes with the real groom without worrying about continuity for hair. Although NJ's hair in that get up would be easy to replicate...

0

Required fields are marked *

I might have to disagree with you on the "expensive" to refilm part.
The reason why it would probably be the opposite is that everything in 2002 takes place in ONE scene and everything in 2013 takes place in ONE scene. Therefore, it would probably be super easy to just fill in the missing pieces as they did for Answer me 1997. I get how it would be expensive to re-film multiple scenes, but it's probably an easy feat for our answer me 1994 team who are probably even more skilled coming off of 1997.

I can see how it's a greater possibility for maybe the LEADS to know the husband by now ( i heard the crew is currently filming the episodes in the teens so they're not yet done) but i'll take seo in guk's word when he said shin PD didn't want his actors to reveal something or have it affect their acting in knowing. The fact that we really don't have a clue yet (as in, no spoilers about who the hubby is) tells me that very very few people (if any) know.

hrm... this thought just came across today after I finally watched episode 10.

what if... oppa is gay? his story line is getting really close with binggure lately and this might be the progressive storyline that this show is definitely capable at pulling off. maybe this is the reason why we really haven't given a window as to how he truly feels for na jeong. we know he has mad love for her... but maybe as a sister.

could the boy london t-shirt be a clue?

just a thought. i wouldn't mind this coming true anyways since i think CB is a good match for na jeong's personality.

Hmm....Samcheonpo and Yoojin's love story is sweet. Both of them slowly realising the good side of the other. I'm surprised that Samcheonpo would step up so fast and make his move on the boat, given how often he is bullied by Yoojin. I was worried for a moment that Yoojin would kick him off the boat. I guess, love is about timing. :)

This episode sealed that I am Team Chilbongie even if he doesn't get the girl in the end. Unless he does some jerk moves in the months down the road. Chilbong is such a sweet and earnest boy! He is sweet and polite to the elders (Grandma), and willing to help a stranger (who threatened to kill him earlier). I'm not saying that the other boys aren't, they are too; but in the earlier episodes, we only saw him interacting with Najung and her parents where his action may seem to be for Najung's benefit (or to be in parents' good book). In this episode, it shows that he is really a decent guy. And his confession. It takes a lot of courage to confess to a girl that you like her despite knowing that she likes someone else (and he is not looking for reciprocal). There is a 80% chance that she is going to avoid you like plaque after your confession, and 20% chance that she might see you differently after your confession (and kiss). Perhaps also because I'm a person who doesn't like to live with regrets. For his courage, his earnestness and his sweetness, I'm rooting for him and his happiness.

Maybe it's my own perception, when he smiles in 2013 after realising that Samcheonpo Grandma lied to him, I sense a hint of gratefulness in that smile. That despite the lie, he is thankful for her encouraging tale (to tell someone that you love her so as not to regret in future) that had helped him to win the girl.

now after watching episode 10 i'm sure that TRASH OPPA might be the husband.

1st hint: yoojin said in 2013: "hey groom, how did you endure it for so long when u like her so much?"
fact: chilbongie already confessed his feeling in this episode, which means it doesn't take a long time for him to show his feeling. still waiting for last 10 episodes for sure where I believe Trash Oppa's real feelings would be revealed.

2nd hint: the baseball player said that the groom and the bride look alike
fact: in 4th eps, Chilbongie and Binggeure think that Najong and Trash were a real siblings. Then trash added: "we look the same, right?"

oh, yes and I believe there have to be something to do with najong's back problem which actually very serious and need to be fixed by surgery. but since najong is too young they need more years to do that. now, i am sure that trash oppa, the genius one in his class, would perform the surgery later.

I started watching the show pretty late, just last week actually. At first I was so sure I was on Team Oppa but in the last few episodes, especially this one, I'm thinking Na Jung should end up with Chilbongie. He's just too adorable beyond words and he's such a nice, thoughtful kid. I think he and Na Jung would be really cute together. The fact that he traveled all the way to Samcheonpo just to spend time with her for less than 3 hours, that was the deal-breaker for me. I can't imagine how it'll all turn out with us still being halfway through the show.

Although I won't be totally against Oppa getting the girl in the end, I will be somewhat disappointed though that they're making it Reply 1997 all over again. It's basically the same plot except with different characters. I need the writers to give us something from the other perspective, with the second guy winning big at the end. I'll also find it unsettling and unrealistic if oppa turns out to be the husband in the end since that back view of the groom looks nothing like Trash at all.

About adding Haitai as a 3rd option, I'm interested to see how that will play out although I don't see them having as much chemistry as with the other two guys. But the writers are welcome to convince me otherwise.

As for Samcheonpo and Yoon Jin, kekekeke, they are way too cute. :)) That aegyo Samcheonpo did for Yoon Jin in the previous episode was beyond LOL and their moments together are developing so nicely. I'm all smiles here. :)
