Answer Me 1994: Episode 8

Is that not the saddest shot ever, with the third wheel left behind to peer at the other twosome? Brace your hearts for some tugging, because there’s plenty of moments both sweet and bittersweet in this episode, which spreads some of the love around to the other characters, who get a moment to shine and bond amongst themselves. And a surprise twist! (If you’re me, that is, being surprised at the way one of the love triangles shakes out.)

Ratings continue to climb; this episode scored another high with 7.1%.

EPISODE 8: “A moment’s choice decides your whole life”

2013. Na-jung grumbles at the inconvenience of preparing more drinking snacks for the crew, and calls Garbage “Oppa” as always. (This points us in the “Oppa’s not the husband” direction since she previously addressed her husband differently, but it’s not enough to take him out of the running. And clearly this show knows how to be coy about things like this.)

Garbage accidentally spatters the only mayo they’ve got left, then carefully scrapes it off her face into a serving dish (gross). Then we get a glimpse at her wedding photo, but as the groom is predictably kept out of sight, it’s not even much of a tease.

1994. The gang (minus Chilbongie) sprawls on the campus lawn drinking beer, and it’s Binggeure’s turn to answer a question: Which of the two girls would you marry, if forced to choose between them? This seems like a dangerous game.

Binggeure picks Na-jung, and so does Samcheonpo. Yoon-jin doesn’t mind being passed over the first time, but Samcheonpo just has to state his case with a few backhanded insults (he is soooo tone-deaf to social cues and it cracks me up) and gets beer spewed in his face.

Haitai picks Yoon-jin readily, and expects to get picked right back. But she names Garbage, making Haitai pouty.

Then it’s Oppa’s turn, and Na-jung holds her breath in anticipation—only to be bypassed for Yoon-jin. Aw. I have a feeling he’s just deflecting but Na-jung feels the blow, so at her turn she points defiantly elsewhere—at Chilbongie, walking toward them. Aw, more deflection. Then when Samcheonpo tries to borrow Chilbongie’s baseball cap, Na-jung intercepts it and plops it on her face to cover her tears.

Garbage steps aside to check his pager message, and Na-jung follows to make him re-answer the question. It’s almost funny, the dead-serious way she poses the hypothetical question (“The earth is destroyed, the mountains crumble, the land bursts, the seas part, all beasts and humans die—the only ones left are you, me, and Yoon-jin”), but it just means so much to her and that pinches my heart.

Oppa looks at her with serious eyes, coming close. He turns the baseball cap around and cups her face in his hands, looking sincere as he says, “Of course it’s you. Do I have anything but you?”

It’s sweet and heartfelt… until he flips that mental switch and turns jokey, squeezing her cheeks like they’re made of putty, teasing that he’d never find a toy as entertaining as her. Oh, Oppa. Did you mean it? And if so, why do you have to cover it up by hurting Na-jung?

He smooshes her face and keeps laughing while her eyes well up with tears. She calls him a moron and kicks him in the shin, which I’m thinking he earned.

Back with the gang, Chilbongie gets the same question posed to him, and he answers easily, “Na-jung, no matter what.”

On a rainy day, Yoon-jin walks into a pharmacy (the song is Kim Gun-mo’s “Red Umbrella,” to match the one she carries) and finds Haitai already at the counter. He freezes up as the pharmacist packs up his purchases, which includes a box of condoms, and I swear you can see the panicked wheels turning in Haitai’s brain, trying to think of an explanation.

He lags behind her on their walk home, then tosses his umbrella away so he can use the excuse to share hers. He makes the worst explanation ever for why he would be buying condoms—that his professor declared that one shouldn’t feel shame buying them, and so he was just doing that as practice, yunno, like a social experiment. LOL.

Yoon-jin cuts through the bull and tells him she’s no idiot. There are different types of guys in the world and that’s fine—he doesn’t have to be a sweet guy who dreams of platonic love, he can be his sex-addicted pervy self. Ha. I love how she can cut him down so swiftly, and she tells him to wash off his dirty body in the rain before he comes in.

Haitai looks at her with indignant eyes that glow green… matching the eyes onscreen of the Drama Du Jour, hit horror series M starring Shim Eun-ha as the possessed heroine with supernatural powers. (M wasn’t that terrifying but there was a definite creepy vibe to it, back in a time when horror television was rare.)

Na-jung is especially jumpy and clings to Chilbongie, practically twisting the shirt right off him. Samcheonpo blusters that he’s not scared at all, just as Na-jung screams and jumps on Chilbongie again… and then we pan over to Samcheonpo clinging desperately to Binggeure, ha.

Yoon-jin and Haitai come home, and the four TV-watchers ditch the show to witness the much more interesting argument. It’s mostly a one-sided thing as Haitai defends his honor: “Did you see me sleep with anybody, huh? What’s wrong about an adult buying condoms?”

Another argument breaks out between Mom and Dad. His first love has become a star, and after being hounded by producers to do a reunion show with her, he filmed it after telling Mom he wouldn’t. Oh, Dad. It’s no wonder Mom’s spitting mad, accusing him of wanting to trade in his wife, which has Dad sputtering defensively.

Garbage calls because he doesn’t have an umbrella for the walk home, and Na-jung happily volunteers to pick him up from the library. Chilbongie tags along and muses at the lovers’ spat between Haitai and Yoon-jin, but Na-jung scoffs that he’s got it all wrong—a girl who likes a guy wouldn’t look at him that way. Which leads him to ask, “Then how would she look at a guy she does like?” It can’t be a good thing that the song scoring the moment is Seo Taiji’s “Sad Pain.”

Cut to: The walk back, with Na-jung’s eyes shining adoringly at Oppa as they share an umbrella. Chilbongie trails behind, and the light slowly dawns in his eyes as he watches the two of them focused entirely on each other. Ouch, my heart.

More M watching with the gang, and this time Na-jung leaps at Oppa in a scary moment, while Chilbongie’s left to watch from the other side. I love the sight gag of panning over slowly to reveal Yoon-jin with her arms wrapped around Haitai’s neck… and then Samcheonpo huddled up to Binggeure again.

The boys tease Yoon-jin for her involuntarily reflex, and she rolls her eyes while Haitai decides that all her bickering earlier was just her way of showing affection. Garbage advises her to choose well because a decision made in one moment might stick with her for life, teasing that her future husband may be in this room.

Everyone cracks up when he suggests it could be Samcheonpo, though the Kim cousins vote that Haitai is more likely. Na-jung sides with Oppa, voting that Samcheonpo has a bigger chance of being Yoon-jin’s match.

All of a sudden, the lights flick off as the whole neighborhood loses power. The gang gets out their lighters and candles, and Samcheonpo nervously sits on the toilet and tells his buddies to knock off the joke ’cause he ain’t scared. Heh.

Chilbongie caaaasually selects a spot next to Na-jung as they settle down listening to a soothing radio show. There’s something about the way he rolls on his side to face her that kills me a little, especially since she hardly even notices. The DJ comments that a night like this is an opportunity, instructing his lovelorn listeners that if their crush is nearby, turn to see their face.

Chilbongie’s already looking at Na-jung, but she turns her face away from his, to look up at Oppa on the other side. Oof.

The DJ instructs his lonelyhearts to indulge their fantasies for a few minutes, imagining that their love is requited over the course of the next song (Lee Seung-hwan’s “Humble Confession”). He encourages everyone to try ending the one-sided love with a confession tomorrow, on the chance that they might find their hopes realized.

Everyone listens to the song peacefully… while in the bathroom, Samcheonpo grows increasingly agitated in the dark. He threatens his friends with harm if they don’t turn on the lights, unable to actually count to three to make good on the threat. (“Two and a half, two and three-quarters, two and seven-eighths….”)

In the morning, Na-jung gets up with purpose and practices making her love confession. She musters up the nerve, but gets waylaid first by Oppa’s sleepiness (“I’ll wait for him to wake up”) and then by breakfast (“I’ll tell him after eating”).

It’s no surprise she doesn’t find a chance to make her move, so next she leaves a voicemail on his pager. She struggles to get out the words, “I like you, Oppa-ya.” And then she deletes the recording—that was just practice. She’s never gonna say it, is she?

Samcheonpo embarks on a long-awaited solo bicycling trip, only to drop his wallet in the yard and have to come back. Yoon-jin finds the wallet and checks the ID, and something about it makes her eyes widen in surprise. When Samcheonpo comes back to demand its return, she orders him to be nice to his noona—he’s two years younger than the rest of them. HA. Best sight gag ever, to make him even younger.

He explains that his birth was registered late (which happens sometimes, making your legal birthday different from the real one), but curiously he refuses to explain more. Ha, but this means that Yoon-jin now treats him like a little boy and forces him to be more polite to her.

Yoon-jin happens upon another secret when she answers the phone and hears that Binggeure’s paperwork is incomplete for his leave from school. And then Yoon-jin walks by as Na-jung kisses a photo of Garbage. It’s all about the secrets today.

Na-jung pleads with Yoon-jin to keep her secret, though Yoon-jin is hardly surprised—she could tell from the way Na-jung looks at Garbage. Aw, Yoon-jin takes charge and orders Na-jung to confess right now while she has the nerve, dialing his number for her. But Na-jung chickens out with more procrastinating, deciding she has to bathe first to clean mind and body before confessing.

Chilbongie calls the house, getting Na-jung on the line and asking for her father. Is he trying to confess too? Na-jung thinks nothing of the call, and then he calls again later, only to get Haitai.

Garbage keeps running into Binggeure around town, first at his job at a convenience store, then at his job in a cafe. He sits him down and gets him to confide about taking a break from school; Binggeure’s been saving up for the day his father finds out and cuts him off. Medical school is his father’s dream for him, but he doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life, or even what he likes or hates. He hangs his head in dismay, calling himself cowardly and pathetic.

Garbage assures him that it’s fine not to know what the wants to be at his age, and listens sympathetically. He asks, “What can I do for you? Say one thing—I’ll do it for you.” Best oppa/hyung ever. Binggeure asks for Garbage to buy him one meal a day, and after teasing with a fake-out, Garbage promises to once a week.

Yoon-jin is expecting a visit from her mother that night, though she insists that Mom doesn’t have to do anything since her mother won’t be staying. But then a call comes in from the bus terminal to tell Yoon-jin that her mother’s waiting alone after her bus got in early. Haitai takes the call and offers to page Yoon-jin, but she’s at the bathhouse with Na-jung and misses it.

Samcheonpo comes back home again, having left his pager behind this time. The day is getting longer and Haitai suggests he postpone till tomorrow, but Samcheonpo is stubbornly determined to keep to his plans, as “I have never broken a promise with myself.” Ha.

He almost makes it off the property this time, but the phone rings in the empty house and sends Samcheonpo scurrying back in forth indecisively, wanting to leave but also feeling pressed to answer the phone. He ends up taking the call from another kind stranger at the terminal, who worries that Yoon-jin’s mother has been waiting for hours, so afraid of missing her daughter that she won’t even eat or go to the restroom.

Samcheonpo leaves Yoon-jin a voicemail chiding her to get to her mother asap, and rushes out to begin his trip again. But he starts and stops a half-dozen more times, wrestling to leave as planned but held back by his conscience.

Yoon-jin finally checks her messages and races for the station in tears. Finally she finds her mother sitting outside… and next to her is Samcheonpo, offering Mom the precious coffee he’d refused to share earlier.

When Yoon-jin’s mother spots her excitedly, it becomes clear that Mom can’t speak—she makes grunting noises as she signs her words at her daughter. Yoon-jin scolds Mom for risking it in the big scary city alone, but Mom assures her that it’s a myth that Seoul people are mean. She’s been helped by so many good people today, and Samcheonpo even bought her kimbap—and described himself as her very best friend. LOL.

Yoon-jin spies a pile of notes, in which Mom had worried that Yoon-jin was too reserved and Samcheonpo had assured her that Yoon-jin has lots of friends and is really cute and bright.

Samcheonpo’s narration: “Sometimes I imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t answered the phone that day, and what would have happened with us if I hadn’t gone to the terminal. Living is all about the choices you make moment by moment. Even if it’s just a log bridge, you must make a choice: Do you go forward? Do you turn around, or do you stop? Where I am now is the result of countless choices made in the past. That day I answered the phone and went to the terminal, and those small choices gathered to make up the present day.”

2002. The wedding. Yoon-jin mans the camera as her husband signs the guest book: Kim Sung-kyun. Ah, it’s the real name of the actor! I’m sure some Haitai fans will be crushed, but how much do I love that Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin ended up married?

Samcheonpo: “Whichever path you choose, there are always lingering thoughts of the road not taken. That’s why there are no choices without regrets, and no one right answer to life. All you can do is believe that the road you’ve chosen is the right answer, and turn it into the right answer. The right answer to life is to believe that you don’t regret your past choices and live on.”

1994. Dad has coffee with his first love, played by comedian Lee Kyung-shil. She flirts openly with Dad, who flatters her right back, and says she regrets her choice years ago when he’d asked her to run away with him.

He’s pretty good at deflecting gracefully, telling her that she’s made so much of herself and is better off this way. When she sighs about envying his wife, Dad grumbles up a storm about Mom’s housekeeping and flatters the ex until she’s giggling over his obvious lip service. She practically swoons to see that Dad ordered a cake to take home, assuming it’s hers—and pouts when he says it’s for the wife. To remind us, for good measure:

Samcheonpo: “Believing in my past choices without regret and loving them—that is the right answer, and that’s how to grow old with style.”

Na-jung cracks open Garbage’s door that night, practicing under her breath, “Oppa, I like you. I love you.” He doesn’t hear her, and Mom’s interruption gives Na-jung another excuse to keep procrastinating.

Chilbongie calls one more time, and Na-jung picks up. He’s already forgotten his earlier excuse of calling Dad, and hems and haws before arriving at the point. But he loses his nerve, instead telling her not to sleep with the fan on. Na-jung tells herself she’ll confess after their snack, and Chilbongie tells himself he’ll confess tomorrow.

Another blackout hits, and the gang pulls out the candles and the liquor. Yoon-jin is the first to get drunk, and asks the resident sex addict if he’s used all his condoms yet. When Haitai gets defensive, she announces that she saw him buying porn the other day. “It’s okay,” she says, “it’s a disease, it’s not your fault.” Pwahaha.

Then she turns to Samcheonpo and outs him as being two years younger than them all, to their shock. Next is Binggeure, whom she nags to get the proper paperwork filled out for his school leave. Haha. And gasp! There’s one more secret she knows.

Garbage tries to usher Yoon-jin to her room since she’s half-asleep, but she starts hitting him and calling him jerk: “Can’t you recognize Na-jung’s feelings?”

Droopy heads perk up as she continues, “Na-jung really, really likes you.”

Na-jung is too drunk to freak out and just starts her drunk-winking, but Garbage’s face grows serious. Chilbongie’s too.

Yoon-jin sits down in front of Samcheonpo and orders him (calling him Sung-kyun) to give “noona” a back massage, telling him that her mother was grateful to him. But as she starts to explain about her mother not being able to speak, Samcheonpo grabs her to cover her mouth before she says more. From the looks on Garbage and Chilbongie’s faces, would that she were quieted a few minutes earlier.

COMMENTS

First, a great big awwwww for the Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo romance. I thought there might be room to go that way in the future, but that was just a distant possibility; I hadn’t expected things to swing this way at all. It’s not only that it was a twist on expectation that I loved it, but because it happens to perfectly illustrate the theme of the day—that your life can change paths with a single, in-the-moment decision.

Not that a single decision decides your life, of course—it’s up to you to build your life upon a foundation of daily choices, but one thing is enough to make an opportunity… or let it slip by. It’s the difference between Samcheonpo and Haitai, though it certainly isn’t arguing that Samcheonpo is the better man for going to the terminal over Haitai. If the situation were flipped and Haitai got the later call, he may have gone to Mom too. But Samcheonpo being the guy at the terminal opened Yoon-jin’s eyes to him, and therefore the door to their potential future courtship. While we already know that they end up happily married in the future, I think it’ll be plenty of fun to watch them racking up more daily choices to direct them in that eventual direction, because at this point in 1994, it’s hardly a done deal.

The storyline also gives a nice counter to the main love triangle, which was an example of missed opportunities. Or maybe it’s deliberately surrendered opportunities, because both Na-jung and Chilbongie let their fear take over and talk them out of confessing.

I’m pretty confused over Garbage’s reactions, which I know is the intended effect because we haven’t been given an insight into his feelings or behavior yet. It’s exciting on one level to dig for hints of his feelings and feel that flutter of excitement when he takes a step in Na-jung’s direction; I feel like we’re watching their relationship through Na-jung’s eyes, and the drama captures perfectly that feeling of harboring both hope and despair that your crush might like you back—the tiniest encouragement can sustain you for days, but a setback can be heart-crushing.

I have full expectation that the drama will give Garbage a good reason for his hot-cold reactions (well, more like serious-not-serious), but I think they have to start peeling back the veil on his emotions soon. The longer they tease, the more they run the risk of pushing too far and aggravating us rather than titillating. Okay, by us I mean me, because while I adore Oppa as a character and a person, he’s really toeing that line for me where I find him frustrating.

Without further explanation I can only think that he’s either afraid of his feelings or misguided about what’s best for Na-jung. If there’s a good reason, I want to be with him and feel that conflict for him, rather than feel irritated that he clearly likes her but keeps pushing her away, which results in a lot of mixed signals.

The contrast is especially stark because we’ve got Chilbongie waiting right on the other side, and he has no problem choosing Na-jung and facing her full-on. He’s not conflicted, he’s not withdrawing, and he’s 100 percent on Na-jung’s side. I understand that it’s easier to put yourself out there when you’ve experienced less pain, so maybe Chilbongie finds it easier to be that way than Oppa… but at this point in the story there’s no indication of that so that’s a lot of scrambling for justification for a reason that may not exist.

I never subscribe to the belief that one person “deserves” love more than another person, because that’s not how love works. Love is a gift, not an entitlement. But right now I’m leaning more on Team Chilbongie, because it’s hard not to love a guy who’s willing to love you wholeheartedly.

I do wonder at the 2013 timeline skewing so heavily in Chilbongie’s favor, though, and it makes me suspicious that a massive reversal is in our future. But the only reason for thinking that is because it has to, it’s too straightforward otherwise. Gahhh, this love triangle is both really good and really, really terrible.

My biggest curiousity is whether or not Garbage will reciprocate. If he likes her, why won't he be willing to date her? Chilbongie is already facing her full-on, and maybe that's what Na Jung needs and wants. Yes, I also love Garbage as well, but I feel that Chilbongie is giving her all the attention and devotion she deserves, even if she doesn't see it. I honestly think she and Chilbongie will end up together because of his support and devotion towards her, while Garbage is just turns a blind eye until he is actually confronted with it (like now). Team Chilbongie all the way!!!

This show conflicts me so so much. I really love Oppa and I would love it even more if we finally get a glimpse of what is in that mind of his but still,I can't help but root for Chilbongie. Sweet Chilbongie who just broke my heart when it was obvious when he realized Na Jung' s feelings for Oppa. So, no matter how much I love Oppa, I really want Cholbongie to end up with Na Jung.I would hate it too if Chilbongie and Na Jung date for a while and Oppa figures out what he wants to do before confessing to Na Jung and her going back to him.Not just because it'll break Chilbongie's heart and make me hate Na Jung(which I really don't want to do) but also because I'm so tired of the cliche first love always winning at the end in Dramas. It doesn't always work out like that in real life and I hope that the show will try to portray a realistic view of someone having their first love and getting over it gradually with the help of someone else. But I'm really starting to slowly lose hope because Chilbongie is displaying characteristics of a perfect second lead. Always sweet and present for the girl but getting friend zone even when he's trying his best. And also because like Javabeans mentioned, the 2013 is timeline is skewing too much in. Chilbongie's favor. They would never make it this obvious unless they're trying to trick us. But,I'll try to not lose all hope and root for team Chilbongie until the end!

Oh my Chilbongie.....

I dont want to care about this guessing game anymore but I cannooott T_T Im obsessed!!!

In a way I have this feeling that it will be CB in the end because if I remember correctly from AM 97, YJ love was one sided too at first, where SW was all about mature Oppa. And I think Oppa doesnt love SW as much as YJ. I sort of having the same vibe going on here, but then I remembered unlike AM 97, Jung Woo is the lead right? (Or at least his name is first in any casting list) and my baby Yoo Yeon Seok named second! Gaaahhh this is frustrating!

Anyway, thank you for the recap! Im happy that we are on the same boat.

To console you and because I'm a Chilbongie shipper searching for ways to keep my sanity in check, :) if this does follow the 97 trajectory, then Oppa may not answer Na Jeong's feelings even if he feels the same (I think he kinda does have feelings for her) a little like how Shi Won loved Yoon Jae's hyung but it was never romantic from her POV.

Then she noticed Yoon Jae after his confession at the norebang and realised she feels for him instead.

So put Na Jeong in that scenario, she may realise that what she wants from Oppa, Chilbongie will deliver...
*fingers and toeses crossed* ;)

Team Chilbongie!

I thought a good point was made, that even though we know that Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin end up together, there is still plenty of time in for the drama for them to have other relationships. Perhaps Haitai and Yoon-jin date for a bit before she and Samcheonpo have a relationship to help those that were for Haitai and Yoon-jin

This is probably true.

In a pack of friends this close, in reality, people may date around and though they are initially uncomfortable around each other, y'know like, "Your best friend's ex-girlfriend is also my ex-girlfriend." but it sorts itself out after a while.

Because in 2013, everyone is very close, they run around the house like it's their own.

So I hate to break all the hearts of the Oppa/Na Jung shippers but Oppa is gay. He will end up with Bingrae. He has never looked at Na Jung as anything more than his little sister. He loves her but not in a romantic way. After watching episode 8 and trying to understand the actors choices in that scene it hit me "What if he is gay." So I marathoned the WHOLE show over again looking at it from that persoective and guess what - IT ALL WORKS! Every character choice and actor choice the 2013 scences (take a close look folks and you will see it) the clues are all there. And in fact the developing relationship between him and Bingrae is adorable. I have a list of moments I could point to that will illustrate my belief but as I don't have it with me at the moment I will post them later. But it is clear to me as can be that he is just discovering that out for himself and he is opening up to that because of his feelings for Bingrae. So Na Jung will end up with Chil bongie - unless they do a crazy reversal and make Haitai take the over but I don't think that will happen.

Now before anyone starts throwing things at me - please keep an open mind and look at the shows again for yourself.

Although I'm not ruling out that possibility, there are moments where Trash looks like he has not-so-platonic feelings for Na Jeong. For instance, the look he has when Chilbong kissed Na Jeong, and how he undressed in front of her, knowing full well the effect it has on her. Or how he told his friend who wanted her number that she already had a boyfriend. I can chalk up the first and last one to him just acting as the protective brother but that second one is just a little harder to explain away.

I see Trash's relationship for Binggrae as more hyung-dongaeng-y but sometimes, Trash is awfully a bit too touchy with Binggrae, both in the 1994 and back in the present scene where he was fiddling with his collar. I don't know, it is a little suspicious that is why the possibility Trash being gay/bisexual is not as outrageous as it seems.

Cam - I see that scene a little differently - it is because he only sees her as a little sister that he changes in front of her and I don't think he has ANY idea he is making her uncomfortable. We, the audience, know how she feels and so we feel uncomfortable for her. When Chil bong kissed her I didn't see his face as jealous merely surprised or curious. I think this is the first time a guy has liked his "sister" and he is processing what his role should be. I think he was just being a good Oppa telling his friend she had a boyfriend and he may even feel that she almost does because he has been watching Chil bongie and her together - he just didn't realize that she has feelings for him and she doesn't notice Chil Bongie's feelings.

Haha don't get me wrong, I would not mind at all if that was really the case as I'm firmly on Team Chilbongie. But I still think the scene where he changes in front of her was still in response to seeing Chilbong and Na Jeong together and his way of testing her. I don't know, he's actually a very hard character to read because one moment, it looks like he's aware of Na Jeong's feelings and the next it's like he really had no clue! But I am not discounting your reasoning either! :)

Totally agree, Trash has no idea about Na Jung feelings, the same way he interact with her the first 3 episodes is the same way he interacting with her now. Trash taking off his pants and shirt in front of Najung is something he done a millions time you can tell because he was so comfortable and she didn't make one complaint about his actions. I think people really need to start watching this drama base on the characters view point and not as an viewer you get a more in depth connection to the characters as while as the storyline. I felt so sad for Trash hearing Yoo Jin confession about Na Jung feeling. At this time Trash love her as a sister not in love with her as a woman. Trash now have to deal with something that come at him out of left field, he might find himself going along not to hurt Na Jung and not being true to his feelings that she only family. I also know he not "GAY "he touch everyone, that could just be the doctor in him.

Also my brother told his bestfriend that he will kill him if he tred to talk to me, that what brother do... This the guy he hang and pick up girls with. My brother don't want to think about me being one of those girls they chase around. Totally understandable why Trash said what he say, look at the guy that was asking about Na-Jung...come on now people

"I also know he not “GAY “he touch everyone, that could just be the doctor in him. "

He doesn't touches everyone. That's the thing. He hardly ever touches the other male characters, but he touches Binggeure A LOT. Plus he acts like him an Binggeure are super close, he wants Binggerue to call him "hyung" instead of "sunbae", and he offered to talk to him if he has problems, and even offered to buy him food once a week. Binggeure and him only met a few weeks/months ago, and they're really not all that close at all, but Trash is clearly trying to get close to him. At the same time he totally ingores every other male character, and female characters as well (except for Najung). That doesn't show he's into girls at all, not that he would be touchy-feely with boys generarily!

I'm on board with the Bingrae-Oppa ship!

It's cute how Oppa always makes a pair with Bing. Like he ordered him to sit down so Oppa could put his head on his lap.

I think in Oppa's POV Bing's an adorable puppy dongsaeng and Bing hasn't confessed, just gotten flustered here and there it could even be hero-worship, but I'm shipping this pair alright :D

I have this sinking feeling that you're theory is correct, that Oppa is in fact gay. My problem with it is I love the actor, and I was so excited when I found out he isn't in fact Na Jung's biological brother. I was firmly shipping them together, but it really does look like they are setting him up to be gay.

Normally I wouldn't mind, but just knowing how brokenhearted Na Jung will be just makes me so sad for her :( I agree with all the little clues you're mentioning, and now that he will be eating lunch every week with Bingrae, it makes sense that they're setting it up to be moments when they become closer.

I really like Chilbongie, but my heart was set on Oppa..

I completely agree with you. In fact, I was a little ticked off at the writer because I thought the ending was made so obvious in this episode.

There's only one scene so far in 2013 where Bingrae and Oppa are NOT touching, and that is where Oppa is cleaning mayo off of NJ's face. Then we switch to NJ by herself in her bedroom (with a horribly obvious bit of product placement - Anthony would be so proud) making a comment about how disturbing she finds it to still be affected by Oppa's touch so many years later. With this we know that Oppa is not the husband. (And as someone else mentioned, she still calls him "Oppa", not "Honey".)

And on the Bingrae - Oppa love line, I thought it was interesting that Oppa made a comment, when Bingrae asked him to buy him a meal every day, that he couldn't be seen dining with a man all the time. This shows a awareness of social restrictions that a gay man in a restricted society might have. And this right after Bingrae talks about being confused about his preferences.

And neither Oppa, nor Chilbongie are wearing wedding bands, though NJ is. Haitai is wearing a wedding band, and when NJ tells her husband to get more beer, Haitai is the first to respond to her, and tells her to be more like YJ. This is a kind of familiarity they don't have in 1994. The only problem with my theory is that the groom is quite a bit taller than Haitai. So there's a change in the groom?? Interestingly, Chilbongie doesn't seem that compelled to watch the wedding video; He goes off to sleep, and drinks coffee with NJ. Perhaps he's a bit chagrined?

Ah, show, you're driving me nuts! But in a good way.

This show is officially driving me crazy. No show has done that to me before! I was always good at predicting the endings! But thia one's giving me a run for my money! IT'S KILLING ME! I WANT TO KNOOOOOOW! I love them both! Chilbonhiiiieee! Oppaaaaaa!
I'm shamelessly rooting for chilbongie though. He's just too charismatic and loveable. Knowing that he'll experience heartbreak from here on out only makes my own heart ache but also makes me anticipate the possibility of NJ's feelings switching to him.
Thanks for the awesome recap! I agree with everything you said!oppa completely has me stumped. I can't understand why he would react the way he does.. is it fear? Guilt? Something else entirely?

LOL, my sentiments exactly! Opp and Na Jung just looks and feels SO natural and in sync, like they belong together. But it's a bit unfair to compare them to the interactions b/w Na Jung and Chil Bong, since these two have just met, albeit with mad chemistry, as well.

To all those complaining about "first love in k-dramas" (both here and on soompi), if Na Jung ends with CB, it will be again the first love cliche, just not Na Jung's but CB's first love. NJ and CB are essentially the same in regards to their crushes. So, theoretically speaking, those who are annoyed by the 1st love trope should be rooting for haitai.

Just saying :P

I was kind of hoping for Haitai, because it's more cliche to fall in love with the guy that you fight with all the time, and it would've been nice for a guy to cross the friend barrier slowly and then the boyfriend one. However, this is still super cute too. A couple of dramas have pointed out love is about timing as much as anything else, which works. I think Haitai would have gone, but that's not the point is it? And him covering her mouth at the end eeeeeee! Someone should have done it sooner lol but it's like you can't stop a train going at full speed and you don't expect there'd be more.

I'm totally fine with Oppa's dilemma, and it'll mean greater angst in the future so. I had to pause it when Na jung asked him at the phone booth because I was panicking. And then he responded and I just flopped around. I actually understood the tears as relief and 'How could you do that to me before' rather than dejection. And man that cut in the umbrella scene with the three of them .......

First of all, amazing episode! What a way to leave us with a cliff-hanger.

So, you know how Oppa and Na Jung has that one theme song that the show plays over and over and over again during their interactions? Well, that song was playing when Yoo Jin was looking for her mom at the train station, and who happens to be there but SCP...and cue to the wedding day big reveal that SJ and SCP are married! So, could that theme song be another clue? Like, if it's playing during a couple's scene, it could mean that NJ will end up with Trash.

However, with 12 episodes left, a LOT could happen. And I love where this episode ends because with YJ's drunken confessions on behalf of everyone, everything is set on motion to kick the show up a notch for our OTP.

In the meantime, I'm just going to enjoy the ride, b/c either leading man is so amazing, I would be ok with Na Jung ending up wither either Oppa or Chil Bong.

Thank you, javabeans and DB for the recaps! I look forward to this every weekend :)

I am rooting for Chilbongie. I loved the baseball stadium scene, then the one where they are all lying in the dark, listening to the radio. Even if she does end up with Oppa, I think she will also date Chilbongie at some point.

What bothers me about the Oppa ship is that they are so close, it's almost claustrophobic. In 1994, they are already like a married couple who have been together for a gazillion years. He is incredibly sweet to her, but in terms of her personal growth I think Chilbongie would be better.

Most people keeps berating Trash for not confessing yet; but between him and CB, he has the most to lose if their relationship goes bad.
What I think is that if the writers does not make him Gay;they will either choose to remain siblings or take a chance,if they both feel the same way.
And this whole discussion about first love, Oppa is NJ 1st love as NJ is CB's first love, but who is to say that NJ is Oppa's 1st love?

right? Oppa yah has so much to lose, he has this close relationship with Nj, with NJ's parents and if their relationship doesn't work their close relationship might end, plus no one thinks Oppa-yah might like her since they were young - but then Nj's brother died and Garbage feels he needs to be her oppa forever for his dead friend - maybe he blames himself for him dying or something like this.

Oh wow! I haven't thought about oppa's 1st love now that we are talking and picking at the possibility of whose 1st love will not gonna end happily. I think we are about to be revealed with oppa's 1st love since both NJ and CB 1st love story already out. I always wonder there is something incomplete about oppa's back story and now I think I know what it was; it's oppa's 1st love that is yet to be revealed. Dear writer I am hoping that you guys won't leave that out and I want to know oppa's take on his BFF death and what prompted him to be the oppa for NJ and everything, I want to know what made him do what he did now. Please writer-nim flesh that out coz I think people are being too judgmental on oppa for his hot and cold reaction towards NJ.

From what we've seen so far (with Dad's story, Haitai breakup and the second marriage of CB's mom) I think Reply 1994 is about not getting your first crush/love, but finding love again after your first love.

(Or I'm only wishing it cause CB and NJ are sooooo cute together...)

I decided to go back and watch preview episode 0 and saw the scene with na jung and chilbong under the umbrella in the rain (scene from this episode). Not to mention another crucial scene that has yet to be aired.
did the production team really finish all 8 episodes (possibly more) by the start of this drama? In that case, that reassures me considering they're not scrambling for live shoot.

Yay for Sam Cheon Po and Yoon Jin! I was hoping they'd get together since the breakfast incident, so I'm happy to see they're the end game. Also, making Sam Cheon Po the maknae is the best joke ever.

Ugh, this love triangle is killing me. I'm with you jb, if I knew how Oppa felt or what the hell he was thinking, then I could root for him, but right now, I'm on Team Chilbong. Because how can you not fall for that cute puppy? I can't help but think endgame will be Oppa though, just because everything we saw in episode 0 (Oppa not actually being the real oppa, Haitai and Yoon Jin's romance, Binggeurae liking Na Jung) has turned out differently and with 12 more episodes, I'm sure the writers will keep screwing with us.

Okay, am I only one that think that maybe, just maybe Garbage don't like Na-Jung in that way. Why do he has to be deflecting his feelings, why couldn't it be he don't have those kind of feelings for her. Till this day my older brother get mad at his friends comments about me so it normal that Garbage look at Chilbong when he Kiss Na Jung as an older brother who making sure the guy is being respectfully and also because his little sister is growing up.

Hmmm... interesting that I understand why Oppa does what he does?

He is like the SW from Answer 1997. She liked YJ back but was afraid of their close relationship go ''sour'' and YJ was always there for her and she didn't want to lose that.

The same for Garbage, it is not hard to understand sometimes people choose to not gave one step more into a relationship, afraid of things not working out and comfortable with the present relationship.

But now Oppa yah that ignored NJ's feelings as a simple crush and that it would end go soon, he also can think NJ was just confused due to their close relationship.

Seems like Oppa loves NJ too much to risk their present relationship. He isn't in a easy spot, CB can confess and he'll not lose anything - maybe will get a heart break, but oppa yah will lose his close friendship with NJ and her parents.

Plus, he wasn't too sure about her feelings until YJ told how serious it was and that she was really hurting, now oppa yah will have to face it and things will be hard for both NJ and Trash.

It seems he never saw her as ''woman'' so far, but seeing his friends noticing her as blind date, seeing CB kissing her, and other things made him wake up from it, that she is no longer a child... next episode he'll see her with no clothes and Uh-oh, I can't wait hahah, I'm sure he'll keep a distance and NJ will be so hurt... going to CB. I feel sorry for CB, he is an awesome guy, but so far he is friendzoned, NJ does seem feel physical attraction for CB but that is it. Her eyes just have oppa.

I'm pretty sure my love for Oppa comes from being Jung Woo biased. I'm rarely so with any actor when it comes to their character. Usually I pick whichever character tugs on my heartstrings more. But I just adore Jung Woo so much! He was one of my favorite characters in YTBLSS. Bread Man was just awesome! And Jung Woo is such a fantastic actor, too. Which makes me love Oppa so much. Chilbongie does tug on my heartstrings, but, as I said in the previous episodes comments, I'm not a big fan of Yoo Yeon-seok's acting. He didn't impress me in GFB, but he is here. Still, my love of Jung Woo and Oppa is hard to overcome, even for Chilbongie.

As for the main love triangle, I don't really care anymore. Both are good guys and both seem good for Na-jung. But at the end of the day, I will still choose Oppa. However, whichever way it shakes out I will accept. Like with Yoon-jin, Samcheonpo and Haitai. Because of the bickering nature of their relationship, I expected Yoon-jin's husband to be Samcheonpo, so I wasn't all that surprised when it was confirmed. I feel bad for Haitai and hope he meets an awesome woman one day in the shows future. We still have nearly twenty years from 1994 to 2013.

I love the parents' relationship. They are so cute. The actors complement each other well, too.

I still think Bingguere is Hoya's love interest from AM1997. At least, I hope so. Partly because I want Bingguere and Hoya's character to be happy, but also because I don't want Oppa to be gay.

Anyway. Thanks for the recap, JB!

I loved the secret reveal and Garbage oppa's expressions. Man, Yoon-jin is super frightening when she's drunk. I am a total Garbage-Na-jeung shipper and had always LOVED oppa-ya. And I love Chilbongie too 'coz his expressions weirdly reminds me of Sam Winchester's expressions in 'Supernatural', namely, puppy-dog looks. More like a puppy who'd been left in the rain for too long and is giving you that look, seated by the door and drenching wet, with it's nose pressed against the glass. . . . and I'm getting ahead of maself. Any who, I'm positive that whatever the ending might be in this awesome, unpredictable drama, it WILL spurn fanfictions. I, for myself, already started some. Ha. What I wanted to say was, Chilbongie was super adorable, but its still a crush. But with oppa-ya, its love. I'm 100% positive that oppa loves Na-jeung back, more than a brother should. He's afraid that he'll risk the family r'ship he'd created. He might have a sordid past, but he's just so amazing that you can't word it even. He's the BEST actor in the drama. The expressions, man, kill me, why don't you? Team oppa-ya, ftw forever! <3

Song that plays on NJ and Oppa scenes:

I just laughed over what you said
But you wouldn’t know
I like everything about you but I’m scared right now

Too many thoughts are blocking you
But you smile at me (I’m just thankful)
Your innocent heart is still so pretty
But I don’t know why but everything is so hard

The world will definitely change
Our thoughts will change, think about it
It’s just hard
When you look at my warmly
I sometimes turn away
But do you feel it?
It’s not because I don’t like you

After meeting you, starting from some point
I started to have worries
After I started to like you
When I think of you, I only sigh

When I see your lovable eyes
My heart gets peaceful
When I’m holding your hand (I dreamed these kinds of dreams)
When you kiss my cheek, it feels like the whole world is mine
I just want to hug you like this
But there are still so many things in this world that are in front of you

Think about it, it’s just hard
All of the new things that you’ll experience
Everyone will start to turn their eyes on you
Do you know how I feel?
I don’t want to hurt your small heart
That’s what it is
Adults always tell me, there are still more things you don’t know

I just hope your innocent heart won’t change

(Cr. popgasa)

I think the song pretty much gives away Oppa feelings for NJ. He feels like NJ is young and there is so much to live and feel, that she never experienced true love and might be confusing her feelings for him, I think oPPA is sure about his feelings but afraid of her feelings.

That her crush might be something temporarily... and if he confess and things don't work, it will ruin their relationship.

I don't see how hard is to understand Trash imo. I think you guys just want him to say the words with his mouth, but imo JW is showing trash feelings well through his eyes. I can see him hurting, I can see he loves NJ and I can see he is holding it in.

You're right. That song pretty much says how Oppa is feeling. And your explanation of why he won't say how he feels is spot-on too, I think. I also think it has something to do with the fact that her brother died. Maybe Oppa feels/felt that he had to step in to take care of her as a brother, and be a son to Mom and Dad. And now that he has feelings for Na-jung, he doesn't know what to do. Should he remain loyal to his friend's memory and remain a good Oppa and son? Or should he give in to his feelings and confess to Na-jung? Up until now, though his eyes speak volumes, it has been the former. But who knows what Yoon-jin's drunky-tongue will make him do? And the fact that Mom is pregnant, and we know she has a boy, may come into play with his confession at some point. I hope Oppa doesn't wait too long to confess, because Chilbongie probably won't hold back anymore. I just hope Oppa doesn't hurt her feelings too badly if he feels it is necessary to turn her down. Which I don't think it is. Love can conquer all.

And here's Chilbongie's song!! :D Sorry I couldn't resist.

With You - B1A4 (aka Kim Cousin's Band)

My dear, look at my eyes
So I can go
into your eyes
Now tell me honestly
Don’t hide it anymore

My dear, close your eyes
You can see with your heart
even if your eyes aren’t open
Stay by my side just like this
So I can always
feel you breathing

I didn’t tell you even
once for a long time
But my heart for you
is always the same
From the moment
we first met to my last days
Only you are in
my heart until always

The way you speak, your actions,
your facial expressions fill up my eyes
Zoom in to our scattered
memories like a black and white film
Just like when I first saw you,
I’m right here as always
I’m a reliable goalkeeper but you’re the
only person who
made a goal in my heart
Stay by my side just like this
So I can always feel you breathing

I didn’t tell you even
once for a long time
But my heart for you
is always the same
From the moment
we first met to my last days
Only you are in
my heart until always

I want you I wanna love you
I need you I wanna love you
I want you I wanna love you
I love you
until always
Until always

This is totally Yoonjin episode!
She is such a fierce little firecracker... reminiscent of My Sassy Girl, the scenes she totally bully Samcheonpo and the terminal scene... is super jjang... little moments of decisive decision we make... can I just aww for this couple? Samcheonpo with her mom was just too sweet...

And I super agree wrt to Oppa being hot-cold or more like serious not serious... Like... what is holding him back... all the teasing and skinship with Najung is killing me!

So actually I do think as much as awkward as it is... am actually glad that Yoonjin drunken secret exposing session happen... I mean it has to catalyze things onwards... For Oppa and Chilbongie, coz Najung obviously is drunk and is winking as per usual...

And can I just say, when Oppa was talking to Binggeure in the café that he was doing his part time job... I die... why so casual but why so charming Oppa... ahhh I feel you Binggeure... Double aww....

And Haitai is becoming this version Hakchan with all the porn reference lol...

If NJ ends up with Oppa than I'll be a little mad since it's like CB is giving NJ so much love and comfort that her Oppa doesn't but in the end she marry Oppa because half way through he realized his feelings for her and so he just wasted all those time. Mm. i beg to disagree.
Just because trash oppa isn't vying for na jung's affections quite the same way as chilbongie, doesn't mean that oppa doesn't give her love and comfort. In fact, his love and comfort is on a whole other level compared to chilbongie. Sure, it's all those years they spent growing up, but both guys have different ways of showing love. And oppa is still a mystery in terms of his feelings and his reason for holding back, or being in denial. Chilbongie has nothing to lose, whereas oppa has to reevaluate what it means to start a romantic relationship with najung.
I find oppa to be a rather complex character, and possibly the most complex character of the whole series. Everyone is adorably cute, but oppa.. He's the guy you wanna know more about.

TBH, if there wasn't a Chil Bong character in this drama, I would be okay with how cold Oppa's treating NJ right now but since there's CB I feel torn between the 2 because NJ deserves the love that CB is giving her right now not the confusing feelings Oppa has towards her. I love Oppa btw.

Unfortunately, it seems like Korean netizens have "figured" out who the husband is. There's a scene where, after she gets mayo in her eye, Go Ara in 2013 chastises someone about "growing up because he's 43 now". That age timeline makes Garbage the only character who is 43 in 2013. That's not to say I 100% buy into him being the husband. Obviously, the producers of the show are more than capable of reversing that little nagging to simply be directed to him as a sister to an immature older brother. But it sounded more like she was nagging a husband to grow up so... to me, and to most k-netizens, Garbage is clearly the husband. I am completely on the Chilbongie boat so this just breaks my heart. I might stop watching and wait till I can watch the whole series marathon style, or watch the ending first because I can't keep shipping Chilbongie for weeks only to have my soul crushed. GAHHH.

They're trying to throw the viewers off. There will be moments in favor of chilbongie, and moments in favor of oppa. Don't give up because you feel your ship is sinking.
How much you wanna bet the writer/pd is reading some of the viewer's comments and laughing at our misery?
Aside from keeping us tuned, it's to give both guys an equal shot at love.. Unlike your typical k-drama with a douche lead and the nice 2nd lead, who always loses. They're giving us a run for our money.

At first, I was like, "nooooooooooooooooo, what about Haitai?", but then, watching the episode, I was totally sold on Yoonjin and Samcheonpo. The way he takes care of her mum, the way he stops her from spilling her own secret, the way he got teased by Yoonjin-noonim lol. Poor Haitai though, I like him so much, hope he has his own happy ending (I don't even care with whom anymore, hehe).

Oh gosh, chilbongie is just killing me with how adorable he is! I think any girl would be lucky to be pursued with a kind of conviction and passion Im being led to believe hes about to deliver. But I dunno in my heart I still kinda want garbage to come in at the end and give her a hot kiss!

I want to refrain from guessing (who I want) Na-jung's husband. It was such a pain in 1997 and I don't want to do it here in 1994. I just want to see how Na-jung will find her husband, but damn those 2013 scenes I can't help but to take guesses. But I laughed at myself when I realized that I even covered the part of the screen when they showed the wedding photo! I was begging the whole time to let me see who the hell the husband is but I was not that ready to see it! hahaha!

I am rooting for Chilbongie! Trash oppa can stay as oppa foreveeeeeeeeeer!

I still can't get over the whole burger scene!

I don't know why but this drama reminds me of Huan Zhu ge ge/Princess returning pearl/My fair princess(a chinese drama in 1998). In that drama there's 2 princesses and many princes. The 5th prince likes xiao yan zi but she doesn't know and they way CB makes those sad and heartbroken face reminds me a lot of the 5th prince TT

How much do I wish that it would be chilbongie. But I just know that it would be oppa. The writers better give more reasons for us to warm up to oppa rather than do a one time reversal like yoon Jin.

They need to show one of Na-Jung's 3 kids. Maybe that will shed some light...the eldest would be at least 10, if we assume she had them after marriage. I don't know who the hubby is, like some one else pointed out, it was 8 years later she's finally getting married.

Side note, i wish more dramas would do this; keep us guessing as to who the love interest is.

I was reading the recap and saw all these Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo interactions and I was like, they're going to end up together, aren't they? And BAM! It's true. So if my feelings are this true, then I have a feeling hubby is Chilbongie.

Before episode 7 I was Team Oppa 100% but now I just don't know. Chilbongie is <3 <3 <3

For me the most glaring and maybe strange clue is the wedding date. Quarter-finals of World Cup. Taking place in YOUR country. And it was Your Country vs Spain!!! SPAIN!!! Your. Country. Quarter-final!!!! All Asia were rooting for Korea! It's a time when any regular k-drama addict ahjumma turns to be a temporary football fan. Who in their right minds will go to a wedding??
So I think the husband is not too crazy about football after all, and it reminds me a scene where CB had to be drag, literally, from his bed to watch other important match, hmmmm...but to choose THAT date to have your wedding not only made the groom a lukewarm fan of football, but he is a simply crazy person, and talk about crazy guy...Oppa seems to fit the bill more than Chilbongie...but Oppa plays football and very good at it...aahhhh...*pulling hairs*

I suspect Oppa will have the same conflict as Yunjae did in 1997. For Yunjae, on 1 side, its his first love, the one girl he has been nursing his crush since they are toddlers. On the other side, its his hyung, the only family he has and the 1 person he knows would never abandon him no matter what.

For oppa, he has been acting like the older brother he thinks NJ need in her life but also I can feel that his feeling grows more than just oppa/dongsaeng kind of relationship. There's this scary feeling of rocking that boat, of tilting the balance of the scale and those are the very things he is afraid of loosing seeing how he is closer to the "adopted" family than his own. What if something happens and he lost everything, but for how long should he keep denying the desire to reciprocate NJ feelings especially now that the secret is already out in the open. I am pretty sure that oppa has that romantic feelings for NJ but so far he managed to conceal it because he is really not aware of NJ infatuation towards him no matter how much he said he understand women but truthfully when it comes to NJ I think he tends to ignore the obvious because of those reasons. It made for both good and frustrating conflict -sighsss-

CB is cute but since I am stubborn that way, I am still rooting for oppa-NJ to be the end game. And yay! For SCP and YJ, coz I always thought they would ended up together and I am glad the writer didn't tease us too long with who would be with YJ coz I don't think I can handle another mysterious suitor game in the same drama. Please give my heart a break, damn!
