Answer Me 1994: Episode 8

Is that not the saddest shot ever, with the third wheel left behind to peer at the other twosome? Brace your hearts for some tugging, because there’s plenty of moments both sweet and bittersweet in this episode, which spreads some of the love around to the other characters, who get a moment to shine and bond amongst themselves. And a surprise twist! (If you’re me, that is, being surprised at the way one of the love triangles shakes out.)

Ratings continue to climb; this episode scored another high with 7.1%.

EPISODE 8: “A moment’s choice decides your whole life”

2013. Na-jung grumbles at the inconvenience of preparing more drinking snacks for the crew, and calls Garbage “Oppa” as always. (This points us in the “Oppa’s not the husband” direction since she previously addressed her husband differently, but it’s not enough to take him out of the running. And clearly this show knows how to be coy about things like this.)

Garbage accidentally spatters the only mayo they’ve got left, then carefully scrapes it off her face into a serving dish (gross). Then we get a glimpse at her wedding photo, but as the groom is predictably kept out of sight, it’s not even much of a tease.

1994. The gang (minus Chilbongie) sprawls on the campus lawn drinking beer, and it’s Binggeure’s turn to answer a question: Which of the two girls would you marry, if forced to choose between them? This seems like a dangerous game.

Binggeure picks Na-jung, and so does Samcheonpo. Yoon-jin doesn’t mind being passed over the first time, but Samcheonpo just has to state his case with a few backhanded insults (he is soooo tone-deaf to social cues and it cracks me up) and gets beer spewed in his face.

Haitai picks Yoon-jin readily, and expects to get picked right back. But she names Garbage, making Haitai pouty.

Then it’s Oppa’s turn, and Na-jung holds her breath in anticipation—only to be bypassed for Yoon-jin. Aw. I have a feeling he’s just deflecting but Na-jung feels the blow, so at her turn she points defiantly elsewhere—at Chilbongie, walking toward them. Aw, more deflection. Then when Samcheonpo tries to borrow Chilbongie’s baseball cap, Na-jung intercepts it and plops it on her face to cover her tears.

Garbage steps aside to check his pager message, and Na-jung follows to make him re-answer the question. It’s almost funny, the dead-serious way she poses the hypothetical question (“The earth is destroyed, the mountains crumble, the land bursts, the seas part, all beasts and humans die—the only ones left are you, me, and Yoon-jin”), but it just means so much to her and that pinches my heart.

Oppa looks at her with serious eyes, coming close. He turns the baseball cap around and cups her face in his hands, looking sincere as he says, “Of course it’s you. Do I have anything but you?”

It’s sweet and heartfelt… until he flips that mental switch and turns jokey, squeezing her cheeks like they’re made of putty, teasing that he’d never find a toy as entertaining as her. Oh, Oppa. Did you mean it? And if so, why do you have to cover it up by hurting Na-jung?

He smooshes her face and keeps laughing while her eyes well up with tears. She calls him a moron and kicks him in the shin, which I’m thinking he earned.

Back with the gang, Chilbongie gets the same question posed to him, and he answers easily, “Na-jung, no matter what.”

On a rainy day, Yoon-jin walks into a pharmacy (the song is Kim Gun-mo’s “Red Umbrella,” to match the one she carries) and finds Haitai already at the counter. He freezes up as the pharmacist packs up his purchases, which includes a box of condoms, and I swear you can see the panicked wheels turning in Haitai’s brain, trying to think of an explanation.

He lags behind her on their walk home, then tosses his umbrella away so he can use the excuse to share hers. He makes the worst explanation ever for why he would be buying condoms—that his professor declared that one shouldn’t feel shame buying them, and so he was just doing that as practice, yunno, like a social experiment. LOL.

Yoon-jin cuts through the bull and tells him she’s no idiot. There are different types of guys in the world and that’s fine—he doesn’t have to be a sweet guy who dreams of platonic love, he can be his sex-addicted pervy self. Ha. I love how she can cut him down so swiftly, and she tells him to wash off his dirty body in the rain before he comes in.

Haitai looks at her with indignant eyes that glow green… matching the eyes onscreen of the Drama Du Jour, hit horror series M starring Shim Eun-ha as the possessed heroine with supernatural powers. (M wasn’t that terrifying but there was a definite creepy vibe to it, back in a time when horror television was rare.)

Na-jung is especially jumpy and clings to Chilbongie, practically twisting the shirt right off him. Samcheonpo blusters that he’s not scared at all, just as Na-jung screams and jumps on Chilbongie again… and then we pan over to Samcheonpo clinging desperately to Binggeure, ha.

Yoon-jin and Haitai come home, and the four TV-watchers ditch the show to witness the much more interesting argument. It’s mostly a one-sided thing as Haitai defends his honor: “Did you see me sleep with anybody, huh? What’s wrong about an adult buying condoms?”

Another argument breaks out between Mom and Dad. His first love has become a star, and after being hounded by producers to do a reunion show with her, he filmed it after telling Mom he wouldn’t. Oh, Dad. It’s no wonder Mom’s spitting mad, accusing him of wanting to trade in his wife, which has Dad sputtering defensively.

Garbage calls because he doesn’t have an umbrella for the walk home, and Na-jung happily volunteers to pick him up from the library. Chilbongie tags along and muses at the lovers’ spat between Haitai and Yoon-jin, but Na-jung scoffs that he’s got it all wrong—a girl who likes a guy wouldn’t look at him that way. Which leads him to ask, “Then how would she look at a guy she does like?” It can’t be a good thing that the song scoring the moment is Seo Taiji’s “Sad Pain.”

Cut to: The walk back, with Na-jung’s eyes shining adoringly at Oppa as they share an umbrella. Chilbongie trails behind, and the light slowly dawns in his eyes as he watches the two of them focused entirely on each other. Ouch, my heart.

More M watching with the gang, and this time Na-jung leaps at Oppa in a scary moment, while Chilbongie’s left to watch from the other side. I love the sight gag of panning over slowly to reveal Yoon-jin with her arms wrapped around Haitai’s neck… and then Samcheonpo huddled up to Binggeure again.

The boys tease Yoon-jin for her involuntarily reflex, and she rolls her eyes while Haitai decides that all her bickering earlier was just her way of showing affection. Garbage advises her to choose well because a decision made in one moment might stick with her for life, teasing that her future husband may be in this room.

Everyone cracks up when he suggests it could be Samcheonpo, though the Kim cousins vote that Haitai is more likely. Na-jung sides with Oppa, voting that Samcheonpo has a bigger chance of being Yoon-jin’s match.

All of a sudden, the lights flick off as the whole neighborhood loses power. The gang gets out their lighters and candles, and Samcheonpo nervously sits on the toilet and tells his buddies to knock off the joke ’cause he ain’t scared. Heh.

Chilbongie caaaasually selects a spot next to Na-jung as they settle down listening to a soothing radio show. There’s something about the way he rolls on his side to face her that kills me a little, especially since she hardly even notices. The DJ comments that a night like this is an opportunity, instructing his lovelorn listeners that if their crush is nearby, turn to see their face.

Chilbongie’s already looking at Na-jung, but she turns her face away from his, to look up at Oppa on the other side. Oof.

The DJ instructs his lonelyhearts to indulge their fantasies for a few minutes, imagining that their love is requited over the course of the next song (Lee Seung-hwan’s “Humble Confession”). He encourages everyone to try ending the one-sided love with a confession tomorrow, on the chance that they might find their hopes realized.

Everyone listens to the song peacefully… while in the bathroom, Samcheonpo grows increasingly agitated in the dark. He threatens his friends with harm if they don’t turn on the lights, unable to actually count to three to make good on the threat. (“Two and a half, two and three-quarters, two and seven-eighths….”)

In the morning, Na-jung gets up with purpose and practices making her love confession. She musters up the nerve, but gets waylaid first by Oppa’s sleepiness (“I’ll wait for him to wake up”) and then by breakfast (“I’ll tell him after eating”).

It’s no surprise she doesn’t find a chance to make her move, so next she leaves a voicemail on his pager. She struggles to get out the words, “I like you, Oppa-ya.” And then she deletes the recording—that was just practice. She’s never gonna say it, is she?

Samcheonpo embarks on a long-awaited solo bicycling trip, only to drop his wallet in the yard and have to come back. Yoon-jin finds the wallet and checks the ID, and something about it makes her eyes widen in surprise. When Samcheonpo comes back to demand its return, she orders him to be nice to his noona—he’s two years younger than the rest of them. HA. Best sight gag ever, to make him even younger.

He explains that his birth was registered late (which happens sometimes, making your legal birthday different from the real one), but curiously he refuses to explain more. Ha, but this means that Yoon-jin now treats him like a little boy and forces him to be more polite to her.

Yoon-jin happens upon another secret when she answers the phone and hears that Binggeure’s paperwork is incomplete for his leave from school. And then Yoon-jin walks by as Na-jung kisses a photo of Garbage. It’s all about the secrets today.

Na-jung pleads with Yoon-jin to keep her secret, though Yoon-jin is hardly surprised—she could tell from the way Na-jung looks at Garbage. Aw, Yoon-jin takes charge and orders Na-jung to confess right now while she has the nerve, dialing his number for her. But Na-jung chickens out with more procrastinating, deciding she has to bathe first to clean mind and body before confessing.

Chilbongie calls the house, getting Na-jung on the line and asking for her father. Is he trying to confess too? Na-jung thinks nothing of the call, and then he calls again later, only to get Haitai.

Garbage keeps running into Binggeure around town, first at his job at a convenience store, then at his job in a cafe. He sits him down and gets him to confide about taking a break from school; Binggeure’s been saving up for the day his father finds out and cuts him off. Medical school is his father’s dream for him, but he doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life, or even what he likes or hates. He hangs his head in dismay, calling himself cowardly and pathetic.

Garbage assures him that it’s fine not to know what the wants to be at his age, and listens sympathetically. He asks, “What can I do for you? Say one thing—I’ll do it for you.” Best oppa/hyung ever. Binggeure asks for Garbage to buy him one meal a day, and after teasing with a fake-out, Garbage promises to once a week.

Yoon-jin is expecting a visit from her mother that night, though she insists that Mom doesn’t have to do anything since her mother won’t be staying. But then a call comes in from the bus terminal to tell Yoon-jin that her mother’s waiting alone after her bus got in early. Haitai takes the call and offers to page Yoon-jin, but she’s at the bathhouse with Na-jung and misses it.

Samcheonpo comes back home again, having left his pager behind this time. The day is getting longer and Haitai suggests he postpone till tomorrow, but Samcheonpo is stubbornly determined to keep to his plans, as “I have never broken a promise with myself.” Ha.

He almost makes it off the property this time, but the phone rings in the empty house and sends Samcheonpo scurrying back in forth indecisively, wanting to leave but also feeling pressed to answer the phone. He ends up taking the call from another kind stranger at the terminal, who worries that Yoon-jin’s mother has been waiting for hours, so afraid of missing her daughter that she won’t even eat or go to the restroom.

Samcheonpo leaves Yoon-jin a voicemail chiding her to get to her mother asap, and rushes out to begin his trip again. But he starts and stops a half-dozen more times, wrestling to leave as planned but held back by his conscience.

Yoon-jin finally checks her messages and races for the station in tears. Finally she finds her mother sitting outside… and next to her is Samcheonpo, offering Mom the precious coffee he’d refused to share earlier.

When Yoon-jin’s mother spots her excitedly, it becomes clear that Mom can’t speak—she makes grunting noises as she signs her words at her daughter. Yoon-jin scolds Mom for risking it in the big scary city alone, but Mom assures her that it’s a myth that Seoul people are mean. She’s been helped by so many good people today, and Samcheonpo even bought her kimbap—and described himself as her very best friend. LOL.

Yoon-jin spies a pile of notes, in which Mom had worried that Yoon-jin was too reserved and Samcheonpo had assured her that Yoon-jin has lots of friends and is really cute and bright.

Samcheonpo’s narration: “Sometimes I imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t answered the phone that day, and what would have happened with us if I hadn’t gone to the terminal. Living is all about the choices you make moment by moment. Even if it’s just a log bridge, you must make a choice: Do you go forward? Do you turn around, or do you stop? Where I am now is the result of countless choices made in the past. That day I answered the phone and went to the terminal, and those small choices gathered to make up the present day.”

2002. The wedding. Yoon-jin mans the camera as her husband signs the guest book: Kim Sung-kyun. Ah, it’s the real name of the actor! I’m sure some Haitai fans will be crushed, but how much do I love that Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin ended up married?

Samcheonpo: “Whichever path you choose, there are always lingering thoughts of the road not taken. That’s why there are no choices without regrets, and no one right answer to life. All you can do is believe that the road you’ve chosen is the right answer, and turn it into the right answer. The right answer to life is to believe that you don’t regret your past choices and live on.”

1994. Dad has coffee with his first love, played by comedian Lee Kyung-shil. She flirts openly with Dad, who flatters her right back, and says she regrets her choice years ago when he’d asked her to run away with him.

He’s pretty good at deflecting gracefully, telling her that she’s made so much of herself and is better off this way. When she sighs about envying his wife, Dad grumbles up a storm about Mom’s housekeeping and flatters the ex until she’s giggling over his obvious lip service. She practically swoons to see that Dad ordered a cake to take home, assuming it’s hers—and pouts when he says it’s for the wife. To remind us, for good measure:

Samcheonpo: “Believing in my past choices without regret and loving them—that is the right answer, and that’s how to grow old with style.”

Na-jung cracks open Garbage’s door that night, practicing under her breath, “Oppa, I like you. I love you.” He doesn’t hear her, and Mom’s interruption gives Na-jung another excuse to keep procrastinating.

Chilbongie calls one more time, and Na-jung picks up. He’s already forgotten his earlier excuse of calling Dad, and hems and haws before arriving at the point. But he loses his nerve, instead telling her not to sleep with the fan on. Na-jung tells herself she’ll confess after their snack, and Chilbongie tells himself he’ll confess tomorrow.

Another blackout hits, and the gang pulls out the candles and the liquor. Yoon-jin is the first to get drunk, and asks the resident sex addict if he’s used all his condoms yet. When Haitai gets defensive, she announces that she saw him buying porn the other day. “It’s okay,” she says, “it’s a disease, it’s not your fault.” Pwahaha.

Then she turns to Samcheonpo and outs him as being two years younger than them all, to their shock. Next is Binggeure, whom she nags to get the proper paperwork filled out for his school leave. Haha. And gasp! There’s one more secret she knows.

Garbage tries to usher Yoon-jin to her room since she’s half-asleep, but she starts hitting him and calling him jerk: “Can’t you recognize Na-jung’s feelings?”

Droopy heads perk up as she continues, “Na-jung really, really likes you.”

Na-jung is too drunk to freak out and just starts her drunk-winking, but Garbage’s face grows serious. Chilbongie’s too.

Yoon-jin sits down in front of Samcheonpo and orders him (calling him Sung-kyun) to give “noona” a back massage, telling him that her mother was grateful to him. But as she starts to explain about her mother not being able to speak, Samcheonpo grabs her to cover her mouth before she says more. From the looks on Garbage and Chilbongie’s faces, would that she were quieted a few minutes earlier.

COMMENTS

First, a great big awwwww for the Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo romance. I thought there might be room to go that way in the future, but that was just a distant possibility; I hadn’t expected things to swing this way at all. It’s not only that it was a twist on expectation that I loved it, but because it happens to perfectly illustrate the theme of the day—that your life can change paths with a single, in-the-moment decision.

Not that a single decision decides your life, of course—it’s up to you to build your life upon a foundation of daily choices, but one thing is enough to make an opportunity… or let it slip by. It’s the difference between Samcheonpo and Haitai, though it certainly isn’t arguing that Samcheonpo is the better man for going to the terminal over Haitai. If the situation were flipped and Haitai got the later call, he may have gone to Mom too. But Samcheonpo being the guy at the terminal opened Yoon-jin’s eyes to him, and therefore the door to their potential future courtship. While we already know that they end up happily married in the future, I think it’ll be plenty of fun to watch them racking up more daily choices to direct them in that eventual direction, because at this point in 1994, it’s hardly a done deal.

The storyline also gives a nice counter to the main love triangle, which was an example of missed opportunities. Or maybe it’s deliberately surrendered opportunities, because both Na-jung and Chilbongie let their fear take over and talk them out of confessing.

I’m pretty confused over Garbage’s reactions, which I know is the intended effect because we haven’t been given an insight into his feelings or behavior yet. It’s exciting on one level to dig for hints of his feelings and feel that flutter of excitement when he takes a step in Na-jung’s direction; I feel like we’re watching their relationship through Na-jung’s eyes, and the drama captures perfectly that feeling of harboring both hope and despair that your crush might like you back—the tiniest encouragement can sustain you for days, but a setback can be heart-crushing.

I have full expectation that the drama will give Garbage a good reason for his hot-cold reactions (well, more like serious-not-serious), but I think they have to start peeling back the veil on his emotions soon. The longer they tease, the more they run the risk of pushing too far and aggravating us rather than titillating. Okay, by us I mean me, because while I adore Oppa as a character and a person, he’s really toeing that line for me where I find him frustrating.

Without further explanation I can only think that he’s either afraid of his feelings or misguided about what’s best for Na-jung. If there’s a good reason, I want to be with him and feel that conflict for him, rather than feel irritated that he clearly likes her but keeps pushing her away, which results in a lot of mixed signals.

The contrast is especially stark because we’ve got Chilbongie waiting right on the other side, and he has no problem choosing Na-jung and facing her full-on. He’s not conflicted, he’s not withdrawing, and he’s 100 percent on Na-jung’s side. I understand that it’s easier to put yourself out there when you’ve experienced less pain, so maybe Chilbongie finds it easier to be that way than Oppa… but at this point in the story there’s no indication of that so that’s a lot of scrambling for justification for a reason that may not exist.

I never subscribe to the belief that one person “deserves” love more than another person, because that’s not how love works. Love is a gift, not an entitlement. But right now I’m leaning more on Team Chilbongie, because it’s hard not to love a guy who’s willing to love you wholeheartedly.

I do wonder at the 2013 timeline skewing so heavily in Chilbongie’s favor, though, and it makes me suspicious that a massive reversal is in our future. But the only reason for thinking that is because it has to, it’s too straightforward otherwise. Gahhh, this love triangle is both really good and really, really terrible.

Some are saying that Chilbongi is the type to be friend zoned and I beg to differ. Chilbongi has that very confident, straightforward side, that is not annoying. He knows what he wants and he knows how to get it. I mean how do you friend zone a guy who smiles at you like you're the best thing he's ever seen?

On the other hand, Trash Oppa is the kind of guy who misses on the best part of the meal. It's either he's too late or hesitate for others. He has his reservations and well, he should but at the same time it ain't helping him when it's Chilbongi! Na Jeong did get stirred by them abs, amazing pitch and most importantly that smile. Geez, we got 12 more episodes! And I am dying.I didn't know I'd love this show this much but I do!

Don't forget in Ep 6 before the famous fart scene, Na Jeong felt something too when Chilbongie leaned over her. She stared and then looked away awkwardly. :D

It can be interpreted in both ways.

You made the argument why Chilbongie is friend zone material. The fact is, guys who are nice and 100% honest with their feelings will be the friend 99% of the time, while the guy who's bit of a jerk or isn't always cooperative will get the girl. This is what happens in real life, and in the most part, dramas.

If you want to see for yourself, try going to a bar or club and watch some guys hitting on girls -- I bet you the girls are going home with the jerks and not the nice guys.

Thanks again for the recap!!! I died a little in this episode, my heart bled for Chilbong, But if this is parralel to AM 1997, then I still have hope (how many times did In Guk's character get hurt, only to end up with the girl).

I think that the fact that Chilbongie is a baseball player is significant. The unique thing about baseball is that you can be at the bottom of the ninth with two outs, trailing 10-0, and still walk away with a victory. In basketball, for instance, or most sports, if you are near the end of the game and the other team has a significant lead, its nigh impossible to reverse your fortunes.
I think Chilbongie is going to apply the principle of baseball to his courtship of Najung, and although Oppa has the advantage, what with knowing each other their whole lives and her already sporting a crush on him, Chilbongie is going to try to pull a grand reversal.

From a narrative point of view, it makes more sense that Chilbongie's character arc will be about winning the girl, since if in the beginning his feelings are unrequited and at the end they are unrequited, he is basically left with nothing as a character.
With Oppa, I can see his character arc being about how he broke Najung's heart, but gradually the two are able to mend their relationship

for me i just amazed at chilbong who always try his best for na-jung,
but oppa just lean on their memory cause they living together,

he show lots of affection but i just think it doesn't appeal as a signal,
we know it sweet and heartwarming because it was in na-jung point of view, girl in love will make it everything even if it wasn't a special thing

with oppa rejected to give the pager number, i think he gonna show something to us, like saying NJ is mine in front of people, or a little bit gesture,

if i'm na-jung, i'm gonna choose chilbong, so far his affection to NJ is lovely and he always try to make a moment for them

so, even if the ship will sink, i'm gona sink with chilbong

Ooh great analogy there! See, that is exactly where I think this storyline intends to go but you managed to say it much more eloquently than I ever would have. I feel like with Chilbong being the husband, there would be so much more character growth to explore. Right off the bat we already know Na Jeong's feeings for Trash. So in terms of that conflict, yes, there will be heartbreak along the way but I can't see her just waiting and dating and until she waits for Trash to come around and act on his feelings. But if Chilbong ends up the husband, she has to go through the process of getting over her first love and falling in love all over again along with some other significant changes she goes through in life. And like you said, Chilbong can't just be there as a mere distraction (albeit a very big one), he has his eye on the prize but unlike baseball, he won't win it as easily. I have a feeling this guy isn't used to losing so we'll see him knocked down a peg or two over and over again. And what makes it even harder, assuming the theory that Trash is not gay, is that Trash is also starting to realize he might have feelings for Na Jeong. So there is much more emotional payoff for everyone involved the writers intend to go down that route. Because Trash is admittedly a much more mysterious and complex character than Chilbong, he has more of a story to explore: med school, distant relationship with the real family, a growing friendship with Binggrae that not being the husband won't take away from his own emotional journey any less. With Chilbong, almost all of his scenes involve Na Jeong in one way or another that if he ends up not getting the girl and all he's left with is baseball again, it'll just feel really unsatisfying.

So I really hope you and I are interpreting things right in terms of where the narrative is trying to go.

I'm still on the Oppa ship but NJ ending up with CB would seem the better choice for character development and more realistic reflection of love in life. Versus NJ ending up with Oppa would be a great romantic ending, but one that exists only in the dramaland. But whatever happens next, Oppa has got to to do something. Now that the fact NJ is in love with him in out in the open, if he continues avoiding the issue, it just makes him a coward. NJ is a great girl and someone so precious to him, so the least he can do is to face her feelings honestly. If he has to reject her, then do it, it will be a part of her growing up. So please, Oppa, use your brain and heart like you did with those two kids at the hospital.

What you described happens ALL THE TIME. There are countless Korean dramas that have characters that experience unrequited loves (aka the second lead).

Is this show trying to kill me because as far as I know I used to have a healthy heart but now my heart is acting up. I feel sad that CB is sad and am saying it again if its not CHILBONGI am really going to hate ever watching this show. Don't worry CHILLY U D MAN. Na jung shine ur eyes

I feel sorry for Chilbong but am pretty sure Garbage is the end game. Trash is going to leave the boarding house and will come back, loving Na Jung. I don't think Na Jung will ever love Chilbong. She will always think of him as a good friend and that's why I think Na Jung won't hurt Chilbong in any way. I actually think she will talk to him about Garbage as well,Like a friend. It's not her fault that he is in love with her. she made it known to everyone that she loves Garbage oppa.

the 8 ep is for choice, i think it's also imply how na-jung and chilbong confession who didn't happen while they really crazy about it the whole day,

is that mean na-jung will not with oppa and chilbong will not with na-jung,
if that is the case, since we've settle that YJ-SCP,
maybe it's will be na-jung and haitai or na-jung with binggurae

well i just confused

Today, I spent literally my whole night replying to various people in favour of Chilbongie :D

Apparently, I'm going to go down with the ship like a good captain ought to.

But I also look at the drama in a viewer's POV you know, minus all the shipping what would provide the most fruitful storyline?

In order for it to be a great story, Na Jeong must grow and change during the 20 episodes. From what I see in 2013, she's still a foulmouthed sailor :P But what I mean is emotional growth.
Who's best at providing that growth? That guy should be the husband!

Which means if it's Bing who swoops in to help her change :D

Lol @dashi keeping the Chilbongie ship intact. I was actually very pessimistic up until when writernim dropped the OTP that is SCP and YJ. If writernim can make that happen, especially since in the preview before the real episodes start where we were given a lot of scenes between HT and YJ, I don't think she'll go down the same road twice with CB and NJ. It can be interpreted differently obv. But my intuition is telling me that CB and NJ will make it the endgame. For sure. Yeap.

Oppa-garbage holds the key to our sanity because his actions in the next few episodes will determine the fate of this love triangle. Right now, i'm still definitely team oppa. I love chilbong and his friendship with Na Jung but yeah, I just can't forget oppa's endearing actions toward Na Jung. I mean in the end maybe I can accept as just a siblings' concern for each other but right now I just can't see oppa being hurt.

This drama made me miss my own oppa who I was once very close to before and yeah had developed a bit of a crush on (like oppa-garbage he was always pulling on my cheeks like oppa-garbage or if not we usually walk together like NJ & oppa during the umbrella scene) But then that kind of interaction can't last very long when one develops feelings as i did. In the end, we just grew apart and have not stayed in touch. Sigh, and you drama, you remind me and give me all these feels haha.

And I just have to ask this: did Haitai even page Yoonjin? I'm not familiar with beepers but what would be the first message when you call in to get your messages? Because in the episode, the first message she hears is that of samcheonpo, does this mean that haitai did not even bother to page yoonjin? Not trying to hate on haitai, i love everyone in this drama, but i have to agree with one commenter that right now, he's the most immature out of all of them.

Haitai did page yoon jin.
When she first picked up her beeper, there were 12 messages. The audience only gets to hear 1, so perhaps it's the very last message we're listening to, which would be samcheonpo's.

SOrry for saying it like this guys but I think some of you are CB biased not because of the character itself but the looks of the actor? He is young, flower boy and really cute.

JW is old, not flower boy or the so called ''handsome'' and I can see why so many people are on CB boat, if they are younger, the more reason for so many CB fans.

CB character is awesome too, but for me it is still 60-40 OPPA/CB

Awww, it's almost kinda sad that you feel that way. *sending some virtual hugs for good vibes*

I'm not speaking for all CB fans, but here it goes...

There's more to life than pretty faces. I'd like to believe that most people root for CB not just because of his good looks--but rather, because of the way he shows his affection towards NJ.

As Javabeans pointed out: "The contrast is especially stark because we’ve got Chilbongie waiting right on the other side, and he has no problem choosing Na-jung and facing her full-on. He’s not conflicted, he’s not withdrawing, and he’s 100 percent on Na-jung’s side."

"I never subscribe to the belief that one person “deserves” love more than another person, because that’s not how love works. Love is a gift, not an entitlement. But right now I’m leaning more on Team Chilbongie, because it’s hard not to love a guy who’s willing to love you wholeheartedly."

While I'm not complaining about the abs (both of their abs), there's no doubt that the show manages to pull some heartstrings--and that's what matters. :)

I don't agree 100% with what Liz says, but i wouldn't discredit everything she said. You might not be one of those people(which is good), but you could also find tons of people who are that shallow. That's reality, imo.
I'm also basing it on the tons of comments i read daily on DB.

Clearly, I failed to send the warmth of the virtual hug across. *facepalm* Better luck next time. Peace! :)

There will always be instances when people choose sides based on looks--c'est la vie. That's why I wanted to give her a virtual hug (because this realization is such a bitter pill)... a hug with every intention to make her feel a bit better, a hug which meant: "These things happen, but don't lose hope! Let's try our best to avoid letting the whole my-puppy-is-cuter-than-yours fiasco spoil our love for such an amazing show."

If anybody felt offended, my apologies. *goes back to my rabbit hole*

Actually there are way more people on Oppa's boat compared to Chilbongie's, especially among the Korean audience. With the recent character developments we've seen with Chilbongie, more people have been jumping onto his ship.

As a Chilbongie shipper I find both actors, Jung Woo and Yoo Yeon Seok attractive in their own ways. I like to believe that most fans ship who they ship based off of which character appeals to them most. It's not technically a matter of sexual appeal but rather character appeal and personal preference.

I really do love that Chilbongie is beginning to garner more attention and interest from viewers though. There were a few people who were doubting whether or not Chilbongie would be able to sway the audience away from Oppa, and it seems he's succeeding. (Now he just needs to sway Na Jung away lol).

It would be interesting to find out just how skewed the the polls would be if JB did another poll of who will end up as Na Jung's husband. In JB's episode 4 recap, the votes were in Oppa's favor with him garnering 53% of the votes against Chil Bong's 40%. I bet the figures will be markedly different this time around.

Gosh it's not the looks because Oppa- yah is so thoughtful and sweet. Then darn oppa irritating as well.

But it's the fact that CB is so earnestly and honest about liking and going for NJ. It just makes him so hot.

Because trust me I am one of those absolutely torn in two by those 2 choices. But also, what is with the gay side speculation man? Oppa doesn't need to be gay to excuse him not chasing NJ. Maybe he doesn't know how serious or long NJ's feelings will be. And darn it, I am back at the Oppa shipping boat. This speculations are driving me nuts. I don't know who she's ending up with and I can't make up my mind whom I ship. Grr....

Thank you (for saying things a hundred times better than I can)!

Both of the guys are soooo effective in making us swoon (and at times, frustrated, haha)--to the point that their looks (both charming/appealing in their own way) and their abs are merely bonus brownie points for the awesome characters that they are.

I don't think so! The reason I'm hanging around discussing the drama here is because the Beanuts are more about personality and character than looks.

Besides, Oppa's all kinds of hot even if he don't look like an idol! :D

YYS looks are rather unique in that he can switch from young(and cute) to old within seconds.
He looked older in GFB, and even older in Intro. to Architecture. But then here in 1994 he really does fit the bill of a young 20 yr. old college student.
He'll have no difficulty switching between 20's-30's because he has such distinct facial features.
In the 2013 timeline, he really does look like he's in his late 30's. It's also the hair. when he has the bangs he looks absolutely cute, but when his hair is swept out of his face he looks older.

Now in 2013 NJ is married to CB

On a different note, how can NJ be turning 40 tomorrow when they are born in 1977? that would mean that in 2013 they are only 36

Remember YJ making fun of SCP for being 2 years younger than them, that makes YJ, NJ, HT, etc. all born in 1975 or around that mark. So in 2013, they would be 38 and so 39 in Korean age.

Oppa's line - “Of course it’s you. Do I have anything but you?” really did me in. I mean how can the man not be in love with Na Jung even though he turned all goofy again the second after? But I think it's precisely because Na Jung is so important to her that he doesn't want to risk it all in a more romantic relationship. He may be an endearing brother, but from his previous experience with the ex-gf, he may not be the sweet bf that CB has a better chance at. Protecting his younger sister comes as a second-nature to him, but protecting his younger sister who also happens to be his lover, that can create a lot of problems/conflicts/arguments etc. At least I hope this is what Oppa's underlying conflict is.

Other readers have commented on Oppa possibly being gay, or not realizing his feelings until too late, or even getting married to someone else and divorced. I suppose with these writers, anything is possible. But please try not to break the hearts of so many fans, regardless of which ship they are on. Please make the end game bearable for both sides =)

Maybe it's because I have a fifteen year old son who is a pretty decent and very popular kid, who has several little girls, 10 and under, who have crushes on him, but I don't see any confusion in Garbage's reactions at all. Garbage treats NJ the same way my 15 y.o. treats the 10 year olds who have crushes on him. He's sweet, he's kind, he ruffles their hair and such, but he also teases them like kid sisters- he doesn't have kid sisters, but he does have young nieces, and that's kind of how he treats these girls- as an affection and sometimes annoying older brother or uncle. He knows they like him, and he doesn't want to hurt their feelings or crush them, and he knows they will outgrow those crushes and won't want to be humiliated or embarrassed around him later.

Garbage is the same- he dotes on NJ, but he dotes on her like she's ten years old. I think he's figured out that she likes him, but he thinks of it as a typical crush that little girls have- and he got all stiff when she was outed because he'd been trying to protect her and didn't want to have her outed. He really meant it when he told his army buddy that she was too young to date. It hadn't even occurred to him that NJ was 20 and so were the other girls who were at the meeting.

That's been pretty clear- he refers to her as the child when talking to her dad, he's astonished when she says she's not a kid, and he says 'of course you are. What else would you be?' She's grown up and he didn't realize it, and that's why it seems like he's sending mixed signals. Viewers know she's 20, but he sees her as a child, still. If she were 8 or 9 years old, we would see as actions as those of a very affectionate older brother, not as mixed signals at all.

I think he's going to reject her first because she's just a child, but the drunken revelation is going to open his eyes to the fact that she's an adult now, a woman, not the little sister mascot he's been treating her as, and he's going to go through some angst of his own for a while.

And then I no longer know or care which of them get her- I just will enjoy the trip. I like both guys equally, and I think the lesson from this episode works well- she could choose either one of them, and that would be the right choice. They're both wonderful for their own reasons. Whichever she chooses, she just has to believe in that choice and make it the right one.

Or, some mysterious 3rd man will pop up- like that minor character who shows up in most episodes for a minute or two- the guy who was getting into the nightclub easily. That would be hilarious. Honestly, I don't think the writer has totally decided yet.

There has been lot of talk about oppa being gay.If they make oppa gay it is will be extremely insensitive and stupid to be honest. Oppa is shown as a very self aware and confident guy. If he is not out by 25 then it makes no sense he is quite comfortable dating women and never shy to be shirtless around anyone(i aint complaining :D) . Yes know it was a 1994 and being gay was(is still kind of) taboo. Dont get me wrong I am all for a positive and nuanced portrayal of gay characters. Infact we need more of them, but making Oppa gay would not be fair to the character. It will be a cop out ending. After making a guy so confident in his own skin you cant suddenly change his orientation.
I do think Bingrae is gay, but oppa is such a person that most people gay or straight will be attracted to. I just think given the history of the show Bingrae will be another heartbreaking portrayal of a guy's first love. I do hope though that Bingrae confesses to oppa and Oppa is rejects but is still treats him the same. That is what i loved in 1997 though Yoon-Jae found out about Hoya he did not withdraw from him.

"not be fair to the character"? I'm sorry I don't think you really mean it in a negative way, but I have to say that it comes off that way. I, myself, don't think that Oppa is gay. If they do choose to reveal that Oppa is gay though, they wouldn't suddenly be changing his orientation, he would have been that orientation all throughout. It just means that he hasn't come out yet. And I don't think someone being confident in their own skin has anything to do with whether they are gay or not.

Required fields are marked *

>> "After making a guy so confident in his own skin you cant suddenly change his orientation."

If he's really gay, it doesn't mean they changed his sexuality! It doesn't get "changed", it only gets "revealed". It's not established fact that he is straight right now, so there's really nothing to change here.

Also: You can be confident in your skin and be gay at the same time. Just look at some of the Hollywood actors that are gay. They are confident, good looking, and attractive to women as well as men, and they're still gay. Not all gay guys are shy or feminine. In fact, the gay guys I know in real life are more like Trash, and less like Binggeure, both in looks and personality.

>> "I do think Bingrae is gay, but oppa is such a person that most people gay or straight will be attracted to."

So you're saying only gay people would be attracted to Binggeure because he's gay as well? I'm sure there are a lot of straight girls out there who dig his type. He's friendly, he smiles a lot, he may be a bit shy and quiet, but he's not unmanly at all. He's just a regular university student. Why wouldn't girls find him attractive? I'm a girl but personally I would chose Binggeure's type over Trash's type any time!

And I don't understand how who is attracted to you has to do anything with your sexual orientation? It doesn't. You orientation shows who *you are* attracted to, and not who are attracted *to you*! If you are a straight girl and a bunch of lesbians find you attractive, that doesn't make you a lesbian. Same for gay guys, if girls find them attractive, it doesn't make them any less gay.

There really is no use in guessing when we're less than halfway there I guess. The writers can twist it around whenever they want to.

BUT, I'd love to see the show go away from the 'must-be-with-your-first-love' convention. I mean, mom and dad here aren't first loves, so Na Jung could follow that example.

And the other thing is that CB is so sweet, and so it seems like he could be the 'type' to get friend-zoned, but I would also LOVE to see the show turn that on its head too.

Anyways, thanks for the awesome recap. :)

I agree with you. Someone posted earlier that even the writers haven't decided yet, so while I hope they ultimately choose Chilbong, it is pointless to use any of their clues because they're only there in order to make us think it's one person and then the other. I love this show for actually making us sweat over who is going to get the girl for a change, but it does remind me of why I like kdramas in the first place: you know who the lead couple is from the very beginning and get invested in them from the very start. It will be a hard for me to switch at this stage in the game.
Another thing is I actually had the Oppa-Najung relationship in my own life (or rather, something similar to that) and I regretted it. Of course, we were able to salvage the close, friendly relationship we used to have, but I found that it was much more exciting to start a relationship from scratch with someone new and build on it to the point where we knew each other in ways that the other guy and I didn't. Of course, the relationship with my first crush was always special, because we were friends that grew up with each other, but I came to realize that I appreciated him more as a friend. It was the one that came later that became my first love though. Of course, this is my life, and it could be nice to see this show go somewhere different, but I just love Chilbong and want Oppa and Najung to keep their relationship as it is.

My theory for why Oppa is hesitant about accepting Na Jung's feelings is that he promised her brother to take care of her and be the brother she needs. Yeah. Binggeuri is your typical 20 year old college student who doesn't know what he wants to do and is pressured by his family to go the doctor route when he doesn't want to. I think that's why it's too simple -- we see it everyday. Or, well i do, growing up in an asian household.
I think binggeuri is adorable but it'd be great for his character to get more meaty stuff.
Baro(the actor playing binggeuri) has the least amount of NGs among the cast because he has the least amount of lines(as said in interview).

Therefore, as of this episode I'm rooting for Chilbongie. (I also walked past a guy on the street that looked so similar to Chilbong, I had to do a double take! Haha)
