Lee Joon turns genius barista for thriller drama

What is a “genius barista”? you ask. Beats the hell outta me, but apparently that’s what MBLAQ idol star Lee Joon will be in the upcoming tvN thriller Gap-dong, which is the drama based on a true story about a string of unsolved murders whose perpetrator resurfaces after twenty years.

Why does a murder thriller need a genius barista? you ask. WHO KNOWS.

In any case, Lee Joon’s character (if he confirms—he’s currently considering) is a twentysomething named Ryu Tae-oh with an IQ surpassing 150, the looks of a manhwa hero, and, presumably, some mad coffee-making skills. He also happens to be adept at drawing out conversation and blessed with an excellent memory that doesn’t miss a detail. I suppose those would come in handy for the cops in the case, to be played by Yoon Sang-hyun (the investigator leading the hunt for the resurfaced killer) and Sung Dong-il (as the veteran cop who was on the original case). Kim Ji-won is also up for a role as the killer’s new victim who becomes pivotal to solving the case.

On one hand, I hope Lee Joon has brushed up on his acting skills, because he was some kind of terrible in IRIS 2. (I felt uncomfortable watching him, because it felt like he was doing rom-com acting in a spy thriller. Shudders.) On the other hand, I don’t think he was quite as bad (I hear?) in Rough Play, plus it sounds like his role in Gap-dong will be one of the smaller ones, so the producers will be able to reduce or increase his screentime depending on how good he is.

As a drama, Gap-dong does have my full attention—that real-life serial killer angle will do that—and I hope it lives up to its promise. It’ll be quite a tonal shift away from the drama it’s following, tvN’s I Need Romance 3, and premieres on March 10.

I couldn't make it through Rough Play but I don't think Lee Joon's acting was really the reason, so I'll give him a chance. This sounds like one of those I'll watch it if there's nothing I'm more interested in at the same time kinds of plots though

That movie was painful, but it was mostly the plot and the misogyny. It really was quite uncomfortable on multiple levels. I think Joon did well, but I can only remember the sex scenes and the 75 scenes of him smoking.

Where did you watch it?

And ah, I think Kim Ki Duk can be an acquired taste? He is very in your face and down on the world/society and he sticks that in many of his films. They are interesting, though...

Daily Motion. But seriously, think 3-4 times before you watch it. You will NEVER see Lee Joon the same way.

Hope he improved. One of the idols I like but his acting is far from perfect. tVn hasn't been disappointing as of late so that's a bonus. However, the plot seems off, guess I'll give it a shot.

Genius Barista+ Mudrder thriller? ROFL.

Ah my sides *wipes tears*. What other geniuses can you come up with kdramaland? Genius bakers, doctors, pianists, computer game maker, potter, computer hackers, and um, yes, geniuses. Not that I don't mind them, but the genre pairing on some...

I hope there comes a day when I get to see a fusion rom-com sageuk with a genius cobbler somewhere in there. Ha.

I want to see a drama with a genius taxi driver. Drives at light speeds and gets through the tightest spaces, and never gets in an accident. Or gets stuck in traffic.

At least it would be a useful type of genius for once. Especially considering all the Trucks of Doom which are apparently roaming the streets of Seoul, looking for victims...

We just need more genius street walkers.Super street-smart people who can even cross roads on a green traffic light without getting hit by Trucks of Doom.

The day when someone doesn't get into some form of road accident in a kdrama, will it ever come?

Lee Joon as a genius barista? That's a very random thing to be a genius in.
Then again, couldn't help but LOL at this casting after seeing Joon in MBlaq's Sesame Player... there's that episode where he basically had to 'announce' that he was stupid as a punishment. XD

This is the only explanation I can come up with.

'You From Another Star' needs a genius carpenter. In Episode 11, I just saw Song Yi slam her apartment door shut and she nearly tore the door and frame out of the wall.

YOU DON'T BLOW 20-30 GRAND ON A SET AND MAKE THE DOOR FRAMES OUT OF 1/8" PASTEBOARD!

Really, use your budget to buy some real wood.

Joon has greatly improved on his acting. Rough Play, while really disturbing to watch, was actually watchable due to his take on the character. He worked hard to portray an evil character, the rise and fall of an actor trying to make it big then letting the fame get to his head. Bottom line is, I'm glad he's getting more acting cred under his belt. I'm really looking forward to this drama and hopefully the barista thing will make sense later.

Iris 2 as a whole was annoying (turning Im Soo Hwang's badass character into what) but when Joon started killing people and was the double agent that was enjoyable enough lol

lol, at least the usual "genius" roles in dramas seem somewhat logical... i'm not even sure what to make of a genius barista.

if he really has a 150 IQ, why is he a barista??? though i guess it is a suspiciously good place to eavesdrop and collect information (which he apparently remembers perfectly)? i don't even know

Maybe he's just a barista who has high IQ...so "genius" is not really modifying "barista." (i.e. a genius with high IQ who chooses to be a barista)

Most importantly though, why would a barista need a gun? why does the main poster (or any poster) for a character who is a barista consist of said character posing with a gun?

maybe the poster is for Iris2. Gap-dong is still on planning stages, so i think there's no poster yet.

totally agree with you JB =). i think he should be described as a genius who work as a barista, not a genius barista. Unless he could concoct delicious coffee based on his customers personality. Now, that is a genius barista =).

I think his character with photographic memory will be the one who would connect the comics clues to the reality ones. Exciting!!! A barista who loves reading manhwa thriller =)

...and i hope his character will bring light moments or the comic relief. I don't like him serious and dark with heavy eyeliners

It's not quite the same thing but...
(SPOILER ALERT if you haven't watched the end of God's Quiz season 3 but plan on doing so)
...I can't remember his name, but that psychopath genius in the last couple of episodes seems a bit like this (besides the fact that he was the "bad guy"): barista/coffee shop owner who is also a flower boy but whose real identity is a genius scientist/researcher/psychopath doing experiments on real people...sounds really dumb I know but the character was actually really awesome and yet very chilling. One of my favourite kdrama villains ever. So if I consider the genius barista/photographic memory character that Lee Joon will supposedly be portraying, it doesn't sound so far fetched. A barista is a great disguise for collecting a lot of information on people.

My local coffee shop owner knew when I had started dating what he calls "that other guy" ,when my kids were out of town, and the correct spelling of my mother's name. Even more chilling he just about always knew what I would order. But, hey, he gave me free cookies and told me I was pretty.

I puzzled over who Lee Joon was. I am not a MBLAQ fan, and I couldn't place where I had seen him. He sort of looks like a cross between Lee Woo-Bin and Lee Joon-ki. Then I goggled ... he was the younger version of Rain in Ninja Assassin.

I'm going to guess that he's a genius barista because a coffee brand/shop is going to be one of the commercial sponsors of the drama. Kind of like in "Pretty Man/Bel Ami", where the only place in all of Seoul for the leads to go and have heavy conversations over untouched lattes is Cafe Droptop in Myeongdong.

In general, I adore Lee Joon, or rather his real life persona. His acting does leave much to be desired, though I'm hoping he's improved. So, whatever level his character has in this drama, I'll watch it. Previously, I'd been intrigued by the concept, but now I'll watch, if only to see my Joonie oppa. :)

Looking forward to seeing this! I was looking forward to Lee Joon (another site said he confirmed, but I guess it's not true...yet [hopefully]) but it's real life stuff! I always get excited about crime dramas that include real stories. They're usually interesting.
