Book giveaway: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

This is a little out of the ordinary for us here at Dramabeans, but we thought we’d offer it up to you guys anyway: We have three copies to give away of a young adult novel, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Korean-American author (and drama fan) Jenny Han, which features a Korean-American heroine and is centered around a contract romance.

This is not a book about K-dramas, but it sounded kinda right up our alley so girlfriday and I gave it a read and both really enjoyed it. I found it sweet and clever (I love young adult novels, I love romance, and I love dramas—the book hit my sweet spots), and we’re happy to have free copies to send your way for three interested Dramabeans readers.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before features a half-Korean high school student as the protagonist, Lara Jean; she’s the middle sister of three, and together they call themselves the “Song girls” after their mother’s surname. The plot gets going when Lara Jean’s love letters—the ones she writes to boys she’s been in love with, never intending for them to be sent—get mailed accidentally (horrors!), and what ensues is a really cute, funny story of contract dating, love triangles, bickering couples, sisterly bonding, and growing up.

Aside from the cute romance and touching family moments, I have to say I was really happy to read about a Korean heroine in a novel where her Koreanness is a clear presence without the novel being all about her being Korean, if that makes sense. And despite not having anything explicitly to do with Korean dramas, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing a few dramaland actors in the roles, thinking this would make a cute TV series.

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama that includes contract dating. (Author Jenny names My Name is Kim Sam Soon as hers. I might have to pick Dal Ja’s Spring for mine, even though it only barely qualifies for contract dating.)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

Deadline: Thursday, April 17, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it was just released by Simon & Schuster today so it’s now available.

(This post is not sponsored and we weren’t given anything to do it; we just liked the book and were offered the chance to give it away to our readers. And who could complain about free books?)

My all time favourite contract dating is Goong. Nothing could go wrong with fake royal romance which transforms into a relationship deeper than what a contract can offer:)

I loved My Name is Kim Sam Soon!! An oldie but a goodie! I'd love to win a book and this one sounds right up my alley. As a teenager all I do these days is read young adult books and watch k-dramas......I need a life

I'm not sure if this counts as the drama skips over contract dating and goes straight to contract marriage/forced marriage, but Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang/Sassy Girl Choon-hyang! That drama started me off on a such a love affair with dramas (and Jae Hee!).

I'd say Goong. I liked it even though it becomes a little unbearable towards the end. T_T

Lol never mind it is indeed the one and only Jenny Han hahahahahah. I was typing really fast and didn't even look at the book cover properly =_=

The Summer I turned pretty was the only YA book I read in which I didn't know which male lead to root for (Connor or Jeremiah?). Till now I'm still kind of bewildered about how things went in the last book of the trilogy. Oh well.

Looking forward to the new book!!!! Can't believe I started reading her book when I was in secondary school, and now I am already in college. Time flies haha!

I actually think that My Girlfriend is a Gumiho is a contract dating series (but it's not like official or anything on paper) and it's been my first drama and one of my top favorites!

Oh gosh, contract-marriage/relationship immediately takes me to Full House. The choice is cliche, but then again Kdrama are all about embracing that cliche! Thank you :D

While my first ever drama was Full House, my favorite is definitely Coffee Prince.
I was still so new to dramas and while trying to find subs for it (while it was airing) I found dramabeans. I have been coming here ever since.
Side Note: When I first found this site (Coffee Prince recaps) I thought it was a Coffee Prince fan site...coffee beans...dramabeans. LOL, such a newb.
Coffee Prince => Dramabeans!!!! (>-<)

This was such a tough choice between Go Eun Chan and Han Kyul versus Chae Kyung and Shin. So, after wretched hours of forethought :) I have decided I love Goong!!!! Was it Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Hi Joon's chemistry? Was it their amazing kisses? Was it those cute little teddy bears? Or, was it Joo Hi Joon's half nekkid... ahem, face?

I guess we will never know. I love Goong!!!! (and Dramabeans :)

If I had to pick a favorite drama about contract dating (it's a hard choice!) I would choose Full House.

I am so, so happy that Jenny Han's written a book about a Korean girl. I remember reading her Summer series and then realizing that the writer was actually Korean - I found, with some dismay, that she had not published any books about Korean girls. I felt like maybe she would, once she gained enough popularity to write about what she wants (because honestly, I feel like books with WoC protagonists have less of a survival chance) and here she did! I screamed.

My favorite contract marriage drama is definitely Goong. It's also one of the first dramas that I remember watching - I'm in college now, but back then I was in elementary school or something. My cousins from Korea were visiting, so we would all crowd around my dad's computer and watch it together. I had the hugest crush on Joo Jihoon, and hated, HATED Prince Yul and his mom with a passion. A few years later, I watched it again with a friend and I distinctly remember throwing my sock at the screen when he showed up.

My Name is Kim Sam Soon' still remains my favourite. I liked that the ending was open-ended and Sam-soon was such a sassy heroine, with bags of courage and wisdom.

p.s. to think, *soon* there could be a giveaway for dramabeans' book. ;)

I actually really loved "Marry me, Mary' or 'Mary stayed out all night".
I know it is considered a huge terrible mess but I just found the central romance and marriage contract stuff adorable and totally loved it all!!

So many to choose from. Let's see.... How about Full House 2? Does that count? I've never seen the first one, and I really enjoyed the second, mostly because I just love Park Ki-woong.

Also, I enjoyed My Name is Kim Sam-soon, too, even though it's been a while since I saw it, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

Maybe I'm going overboard, but I also liked My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. My first Hong Sisters drama, with a mini dating contract of 100 days. Super sweet, and one of my favorite dramas. :)

A brilliant drama that went largely under the radar but has built a loyal fan base that came back for more every week for every week was something amazing! Kang Ju and Do Rim forever!!! :)

Kim Sam Soon.

I had never seen a Korean drama before when I up and bought the DVD for no reason other than it sounded different. I was about 6 months pregnant at the time. And for the first few months of his life when he was fussy I would hum 'Go Byul' (by Jo Young Won) to my son. Now every year when I marathon it, my son dances with me to this song.

I think my contract marriage based favorite has to be Goong. It was one of the first Kdramas I watched way back, during my undergrad years. What I loved about it was the friendship that formed between the main pair and the adjustments each had to make to fit into each others lives (The bit when Ji-hoon had to live with Eun-hye's family was classic). Also, the soft romantic scenes kind of reminded me of old Kdramas like Hotelier (one of my other faves)

The other would be Creating Destiny because of the gradual progression of their relationship….and the eventual real life marriage of the two main actors!!

Ohmyah!!!
I am a huge Jenny Han fan! I love her "the summer I turned pretty" book so much. She is an amazing writer. And apparently she also has fantastic taste because My Lovely Samsoon just so happens to be my favorite drama of ALL TIME (next to Queen Inhyeon'd Man).

And My Lovely Samsoon is also my favorite contract dating/marriage drama. Although the contract didn't last super long like Full House, its my fave.

this is such a great giveaway, thanks for this ?

Even though Full House has a special place in my heart, I'd definitely say Goong! Not only did that drama make me love Yoon Eun Hye to pieces (and excuse all the terrible pieces she has taken up in the past years), it was funny, quirky, beautiful and I loved it so much. I think I marathoned it in two days, I was kind of obsessed with it. I also can't deny that the word 'MAAAAMAAA' got a whole different meaning for me as I had never seen a historical drama before (and this technically wasn't a historical drama either) and I didn't know that royalty was addressed like that.
