Premiere Watch: Uncle Samsik

Time slot: Wednesdays
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Period, historical, drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Buzzy period drama Uncle Samsik premieres today, and it not only brings Song Kang-ho to dramaland, but an ensemble cast that includes Byun Yo-han, Lee Kyu-hyung, Jin Ki-joo, Tiffany, Seo Hyun-woo, and more. Set in the turbulent 1960s, we follow our titular uncle (Song Kang-ho) and co. through much wheeling and dealing. Disney+ will release the first five episodes today and then go back to their two-episode Wednesday release schedule for the rest of the run.

TL;DR: Shrouded in drama, intrigue, and acting talent, Uncle Samsik is here

I think it is just okay for now, very watchable, but nothing I would rave about.

She is like a random PPL. I never get her character or acting, if you call it that.

I didn't recognize Jin Ki-Joo on this picture 😱 She looks different with bangs.

This star-studded cast is too good to pass up. And period dramas are always intriguing.

Byun Yo-han is a phenomenon for me. In that I find him extremely charismatic, but I haven't (and don't feel any unrge to) watch any of his shows.

I pin all my hope on him to make it in the film industry.

I bet all my money on him after watching Misaeng that he will make it big LOL, ahead all other young actors in that crop. He does, in film but not drama.

Looking forward to watch Uncle Samsik as there must be something in the script that caught Song Kang-ho’s eyes to do it. I think it will be more like a ‘film’ than the usual drama fare.

Also, I always think Byun Yo-han has a shade of Leslie Cheung.

That's a great compliment! We need more younger talents with a future in Chungmuro. While we have some going back and forth, no one has been as successful as Yoo Ah In.

I feel like I am watching a movie rather than a drama when it comes to Uncle Samsik

Same. After two episodes, the history nerd in me wants to keep watching it, but my plate is full, so I'll probably binge it after JoL 2.

When dramaland giveth, it does so generously.
I went from watching nothing to 4 dramas at once.

I just came here to complain about how much of a sausage fest this picture is because I thought Tiffany was the only woman, and then I zoomed in and saw Jin Ki-joo!!!

I mean, still a sausage fest, but I like how much Jin Ki-joo blends in hahaha

With you on this. 1/4 is an appalling ratio.

Just watched the first episode and I am impressed. Just found my first drama that can possibly join my Top 10, 15 or 20 favourite Kdramas.

Oh wow I hope that it stays that good nothing worse than loving a drama and then have it nosedive.

Will catch up this weekend. Based on the trailer, I feel it would be like Giant or Reborn Rich but without the makjiang - reflecting an era in modern Korea.
