Joo Ji-hoon reunites with Antique Bakery director

It’s not a done deal yet, but there’s a strong chance Joo Ji-hoon (Medical Top Team) will be reuniting with Antique Bakery director Min Kyu-dong in his newest project, a sageuk called The King’s Advisor. Joo Ji-hoon must just be really close to Min Kyu-dong and Hong Ji-young (they’re a married director couple and Joo Ji-hoon has also starred in wife Hong Ji-young’s Naked Kitchen and Marriage Blue). Not that I’d blame anyone for wanting to work with Joo Ji-hoon all the time.

The new historical film sounds intriguing, and even the title can be interpreted as either The King’s Advisor or Treacherous Subject, since both technically apply. It’s about Yeonsangun, the tenth king of Joseon, who was widely considered one of the worst kings of the dynasty. He was known for bloody purges of scholars and turning Sungkyunkwan into his own personal pleasure palace filled with women.

Joo Ji-hoon will star as the trusted advisor to the king, a man described as “the king above the king,” who pretends to be a faithful subject but actually wields the true power. He’s shrewd and manipulative, and will use the king’s trust and his wanton excess against him in an eventual coup. It sounds like a great palace conspiracy, and Joo Ji-hoon would be great in something dark like this. Plus, the re-team with the director has me excited, so I hope he signs on.

The King’s Advisor plans to start shooting later this year.

Agree with you, the plot sound great, i would also love if it was a drama but movie is fine, the plot sounds so so good to be honest, i hope this will be another breakthrough role for JJH, after his scandal he hasn't been able to gain back his popularity, i think he need to be given another chance by the people in Korea, sigh, he used to be so popular during the 'Goong' era.

He actually has not had a decent character since the bakery role, his characters have all been so stoic and no diversity in the characters personality. I like him but his roles are a turn off.

You'd call his character in The Naked Kitchen stoic? Because that was in 2009, and was the last acting project he did before the scandal hit.

Didn't love Five Fingers, but I don't know whether that was because of wackadoo makjang, a weirdly mismatched costar or the atrocity that passed for his hairstyle. And Medical Top Team wasn't great either, but I think his movies have him in slightly more playful mode.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Ji-hoon in a Mane of Glory again? Come to noona, baby!!! ♥♥♥

Just don't wait until 10 minutes before the movie ends to finally reveal him as Teh Bad Guy (à la 'Empress Ki'). WILL NOT FORGIVE seeing that plot reveal more than once in my lifetime. *grrrrr*

I don't understand it, cherkell, what do you mean by revealing the bad guy in 10 minutes before ending ala Empress Ki?

Yeah, what's this about? There was no last-minute bad guy. Do you mean when we found out who runs Eagle House? That was near the end but not the very end. Plus they dropped hints several eps beforehand.

Yes, I know it wasn't during EK's "last 10 minutes" for that big reveal. I utilized a 'movie timeline' (as compared to a 'drama timeline') to get my point across. 10 minutes prior to a 120-minute movie's end would be the equivalent of 4 or 5 episodes prior to a drama's finale.

Sometimes you guys take things waaaay too seriously. :D

Aha, I see. Relatively speaking in the timeline of 51 hours, I could see it your way. I loved Empress Ki from beginning to end so I was, yeah, maybe taking things way too seriously. I thought your comment unfairly reduced the show to that one plot point, when it wasn't a mystery I was much concerned about and the reveal wasn't a big deal to me.

COOL! I've become such a fan of Joo Ji Hoon. Not from Goong, but from all the other projects he's accumulated over the years. Loved him in I am King. So funny. Can't wait to see more of him :)

Oh no, not her again!

I get that Goong might have been something since it is mentioned so often and so favorably here. But then, Mirae's Choice happened!

I don't know if he'll ever live down the drug scandal, but I would absolutely love to see him be successful again, he's too good an actor to be kept down forever. And Antique Bakery was one of my favourite projects by him, so reuniting with the director is good news!
