Yoon Eun-hye cast in period film Chronicle of a Blood Merchant

The already star-studded cast of Chronicle of a Blood Merchant just got a little shinier with the addition of Yoon Eun-hye, who will join—get this lineup—Ha Jung-woo, Ha Ji-won, Joo Jin-mo, Jo Jin-woong, Sung Dong-il, Kim Sung-kyun, Kim Young-ae, and Jang Gwang in the story about a merchant who sells blood to support his family.

Based on a Chinese novel written by Yu Hua, who received the James Joyce Award in 2002, the film will be directed by Ha Jung-woo, marking his second directorial feature; his debut was with last year’s comedy Roller Coaster (aka Fasten Your Seatbelt). He’ll also be starring in the lead role as a man married to Ha Ji-won who, together with their three sons growing up in the 1960s, anchors this “cheerful story about a family that is thicker than blood.”

Yoon Eun-hye is the last cast member to be added to the production, which held its first script reads on May 22. She hasn’t done a film in three years, her last being the trendy My Black Minidress in 2011, which I thought was going to be flirty and funny and instead turned out weirdly heavy and angsty. I like Yoon Eun-hye in dramas because she has that wonderful approachability that works so nicely with television, where an ability to build rapport with the audience is as valuable an asset as anything, but the idea of her doing something period intrigues me. And I can definitely see her making her mark in a role that is reportedly on the short side but has a strong presence.

Fun fact: Yoon Eun-hye’s casting came about because she and Ha Jung-woo are reportedly quite friendly (which I did not know, and now find super intriguing). So when he asked for her help, she readily agreed, and will be doing Blood Merchant for free.

Chronicle of a Blood Merchant plans to begin filming on June 3.

Ooh, story sounds interesting even if it weren't for all these amazing talents! I have a book of short stories by Yu Hua that I've been dipping into (english translation, of course) and they do tend to stick with you. I will definitely keep my eye out for this!

There are other actor/actress who have done this..the one I can currently remember is Bae Doo Na...she was so impressed with the script of "A girl at my door", that she did the movie without any pay..
So in YEH's case, either the script is amazing or she is a VERY good friend :)

actually many actresses/actors doing free services esp to support friends project, just they didn't announce it.

and Yes, talking about Miss Yoon Eun Hye, acting ability, when I watched Mini Black Dress, or her latest movie, I realized she needs lot of work on her acting. Too far behind than many talented newcomers. On TV, she's so lovely and quite charming.

"Fun fact: Yoon Eun-hye’s casting came about because she and Ha Jung-woo are reportedly quite friendly..."

I'm not into the K-ent gossip but I'd ship them. Ha Jung-woo is ridiculously talented and Yoon Eun-hye is ridiculously beautiful.

I wish I could read the book in Chinese. I had a feeling that some parts were lost in translation. Loved the story and hope the movie will be great.

Ha Jung-woo is ridiculously capable of creating chemistry with literally anyone. Not that it's that hard when your costars are Gong Hyo-jin, Jeon Ji-hyun (that bandage scene in The Berlin File!) and Ha Ji-won, but poor YEH probably doesn't want any more 'scandals'.

Yay! Yoon eun-hye is something that sounds spectacularly promising! I love her & I'm always so sad when her projects end up sucking through no fault if her own (usually crazy writing). I was already wanting to watch this since I also love Ha Ji Won but both in one movie! Awesome Sauce !! Hope Yoon Eun Hye's part is a good one but it might not be as big a part as I'd like since there are SO many big stars in this movie. Can't wait!

Ha Jung Woo and Ha Ji Won looks like uncle and niece. Surprisingly, they're actually the same age. LOL. Ha Jung Woo and Ha Ji Won also are very talented and been known to create good rapport with co-stars so no worry with their chemistry.

Ha Jung Woo sure knows how to work with fellow actors and actresses if he can get YEH for free. Hope this movie will be good!

Good for her! It looks like a first rate story and she's probably so pleased to hook up with a project that is probably pre-written and won't crash on her half-way through production.

Yeah, but engaged is not the same as married. If Georgie can prove the whole world wrong about him being a forever bachelor, that would be great. I really like him as a person though, so I hope it works out.

About Ha Jung Woo, I thought he's dating SNSD's Yuri?

Yoon Eun-hye in a sageuk!!! In a production that isn't going to chase viewer ratings and get messier and messier as it goes!! I am totally up for this.

It's funny but a lot of actresses of her generation/close in age to her, have either never done sageuks at all or only did their first very late in their careers (see: Jeon Ji-hyun, Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Min-hee, Song Hye-kyo, Shin Mina, Kim Tae-hee and YEH herself)

They wear hanboks and use sageuk-ish formal speech but it's not Queen In-hyun's Man, the timeline was totally 2006.

Oh no, not at all!
It was a modern drama that was occasionally dressed up as a sanguek, but it was not a sanguek.
For pure sangueks you have to watch gems like "The princess' man" and "The tree with deep roots"...for half sangueks pogo recommended the best one out there! "Queen InHyun's man" is just LOVE! ♡

I agree, Goong was NOT a sageuk period.

"The Princess Man" was not your typical traditional sageuk with 50+ episodes and it didn't fall under fusion sageuk either. It was the perfect sageuk in my opinion and I wish they would produce more like it.
"Joseon Gunman" becomes my most anticipated drama for the year because of "The Princess Man" team behind it plus the prince of sageuk himself Lee Jun-ki.

"Tree With Deep Roots" was definitely a fusion sageuk. One of my all time favorite.

A traditional/conventional sageuk would be something grand and epic with historical background like "Cruel Palace: War of the Flowers", "Gwanggaeto the Great" etc.

The story has been moved to the 1950s Japanese Occupation of Korea.

The original story was set during Chairman Mao's rise. Though political aspirations play no part in the story at all.

But the cast!!! Oh my, if only this was a drama...the endless wonderful possibilities! :)

...although that's mostly because I probably won't be able to actually see this movie until next year, after it gets released on dvd *sigh* But this does sound intriguingly good -- and if HJW is directing/starring, this'll likely gonna be another ratings king...

I'm so happy that YEH will be in the movie Chronicles of a Blood Merchant. Although she is not the main female lead, I think her role as Ha Jung Woo's character's first love seems interesting. This will be a good experience/opportunity for her to work with good movie veterans and learn more about her craft. They also say that YEH is doing the movie for free as a friend to actor/director Ha Jung Woo, YEH really is a kind and generous friend. I also like that in the group picture of the entire cast/crew for the movie, YEH sat at the corner instead of beside Ha Jung Woo and Ha Ji Won. It gives me a sense that, although YEH is also an A-lister like the 2 HJW's, YEH knows her place and so gives the center stage to the main leads of the movie. Such is her humility.
