Three Days writer to come back with Cold Case
by javabeans
SBS’s save-the-president drama Three Days was touted as the Korean version of 24 (…even though it totally wasn’t, grumble grumble), and now the writer, Kim Eun-hee, is coming back with what’s being called the Korean version of Cold Case. Which also happens to be titled, conveniently, Cold Case.
It’s about — guess what? — investigating unsolved cases that have long gone cold, and while this project isn’t being reported as a remake of the American show or connected to it in an official capacity, it seems pretty clear where the inspiration comes from. I suppose this writer does seem a logical fit for a show like, since she’s built up her career with procedural(-ish) shows like the cyber-thriller Ghost and forensic-investigation series Sign.
I liked Three Days well enough, once I gave up on the idea that a ticking clock was anything other than a gimmick (that didn’t even have any effect on the proceedings), and wondered whether the 24 reference was abandoned early on or just poorly followed. (The format is so clear! And there were eight whole seasons to copy from!) I haven’t really been drawn to her other shows, but I do think she’s better suited for the procedural niche, and Cold Case has a pretty simple setup: Something happens to bring an unsolved old case to light, and in the ensuing hour you solve it.
Writer Kim will be pairing with director Sohn Jung-hyun, the PD on Thrice Married Woman and Protect the Boss, and while a synopsis has yet to be finished, they two are planning for a broadcast next year.

I loved Cold Case, but you know it ended ages ago and I didn't think it was that popular I'm surprised South Koreans even know it exists.
My personal favorite cold case themed show is by far the first season of Japan's Zettai Reido.

I loved Cold Case! I acualy liked it more than CSI, which is bigger and a lot more popular. Though I don't have high expectations of the Korean one, I think it would work because the concept isn't that complex like 24(which was at times unbelievable).

So is So Ji Sub going to be in Cold Case? I'm confused on the picture so I'm making that assumption.

I've loved Cold Case. It was one of the few procedural shows I liked. I didn't like 3 days, but I'd be interested in seeing where they're going with this.

I went into watching Three Days with no expectations whatsoever and I was impressed by how stylistic the scenes were, when they were shot.
In my opinion, the writer, director and actors did an awesome job for that genre and with that drama and I welcomed the change in plot from the usual kdrama love triangle or love square. I also loved Sign and Ghost - so what does that say about me? Funnily enough, American Procedural TV Shows (including 24) began to bore me to tears, while on the other hand I am excited to watch these dramas show up on Korean TV. I guess everyone has their own taste.

Oh that's true! They had great tracks in every episode.
And I am fond of Philadelphia where it took place, meaning to visit it some day.

I thought the 1st episode, maybe 2, were really great in 3 Days. Then it went downhill, and fast. I'm guessing that it might have been better if they'd held to the 24 hrs format. (As javabeans said "The format is so clear!")
But it meandered back and forth, good guy, bad guys, which is which, etc. I got very bored. I stuck with till the end, though I wish I hadn't.
Unfortunately God’s Gift – 14 Days was on during that period. Same thing, though perhaps more profound. GREAT first 2 episodes, then oy vey. Could someone please keep an eye on the kid? And the end??
To me that was a real low point in Kdramas, very unlike the recent stretch with King of High School and Fated to Love You. What a fun ride that was!

Well the idea of cold case isn't exactly original. I wouldn't say they would HAVE to be inspired by the American series though they MAY have been. Investigating cold case is a very common idea in thriller genre...

Awww, cold case , that show shouldn't have ended ever! I loved it, it was emotional and suspenful, you had no idea who the killer was until the episode had ended ...I liked the main lead too...
I'll surely be watching this...

I've seen a few episodes of Cold Case a while back and I don't think I liked it too much. But that's irrelevant because after Three Days, I'd do myself a favor and not see anything from this writer.
I just hope they don't cast someone I like. It would reel me in when I'd really rather not.

I'm excited to hear about this - I love "Cold Case" series. Hopefully, it will be all about the cases and not about romance.

Cold Case, a show where you have older versions and younger versions of the same character. If there ever was a concept designed for Kdrama. :P

It would be even cooler if the Korean series did what the American series did, and have the older and younger versions of a character LOOK like the older and younger versions of a character. Most Kdramas don't seem to bother.

'Cold Case' was a pretty decent series, a cut above most American police procedurals, mainly because it had to deal with character action and motivations in more depth than most of them. It does seem well suited for Kdrama, as most of the cases necessarily had to deal with crimes of passion in which the burden of guilt, vengeance, and justice lingers on for decades or generations.

I did enjoy some episodes of Cold Case because of the emotional storylines as it says something about their motivations and background story. I consider it a human-drama more than police procedural drama. Anyways, I'll see who will be the leads first before deciding whether I should follow this drama, haha.

Cold Case was one of my favorites, and definitely my favorite of the procedural cop shows. I loved the characters and engrossing cases. I could see a Korean show adapting this well enough. In fact, I think Ten was a lot like Cold Case, and that was a pretty great show.
