EPISODE 6: “Understanding broadcast accidents”

Seung-chan asks Joon-mo whether he remembers Ye-jin’s drunken words the other night. Joon-mo thinks, “Of course I do, why wouldn’t I remember—that accident.” He explains that accidents arise after three factors provoke it, and that night Ye-jin got upset (at being embarrassed over the Cindy incident), she drank on an empty stomach, and Joon-mo felt the urge to drink.

We jump back to the events of that night, after Ye-jin passes out at the pojangmacha. Joon-mo carries her home on piggyback, and Seung-chan zigzags tipsily behind him while admonishing Joon-mo not to zigzag so much. God I love drunk Seung-chan. He insists on seeing them home, while staggering off at intervals to fall down and puke into bushes.

Joon-mo looks after Ye-jin that night, then tells us that after spending the night in confusion, he decided to forget the accident, which would allow them all to return as things were. “But of all things, this kid had to remember everything.”

Back to their confrontation, where Seung-chan says that he finds Joon-mo’s actions cowardly, because even if you edit things out, the original content exists somewhere. Joon-mo continues the metaphor, saying that it’s up to the tape’s owner to decide what to do with that original, whether it be saving it or getting rid of it.

Seung-chan replies that Joon-mo must have never experienced a one-sided love, because if he knew how it felt to like someone and be unable to give up, he’d never be able to pretend not to know Ye-jin’s feelings. Joon-mo tells him he ought to be a prosecutor instead of a PD, but Seung-chan counters that his role in this case is as witness, with a duty to tell the whole truth to Ye-jin.

Joon-mo picks up on Seung-chan’s answer, in siding with Ye-jin, but breaks the moment by reminding them they have to go edit. Not a metaphor this time, since they have an episode to get out.

Back in the editing bay, Seung-chan delivers iced coffee to Joon-mo, then waits with anticipation for him to take a sip. Joon-mo’s face screws up in disgust, and Seung-chan hides a smile before pretending with a totally innocent face that he thought Joon-mo requested tons of syrup, rather than none at all. HAHA. He’s finally using his clueless reputation to his advantage, the wily little nerd.

Then when Joon-mo chuckles over a funny clip, Seung-chan hides his own laugh to say blandly that it’s kind of old-fashioned and obvious.

Joon-mo doesn’t buy Seung-chan’s innocent act and calls him a terrible liar, and Seung-chan just silently gets up and leaves the room. He calls Ye-jin to meet outside her building, and tells her that Joon-mo was assuredly drunk and doesn’t recall her confession.

Ye-jin brightens in relief, and when she admits to feeling embarrassed to have him know all this, Seung-chan tells her that liking somebody isn’t anything to be embarrassed about. She explains how her apartment came to be Joon-mo’s apartment, and they realize they’d both grown up here, playing on this playground.

In a flashback to 1997, we see Ye-jin crying on the same swing set, with Joon-mo sitting next to her. She’s upset about having to leave Seoul and giving up her apartment to Joon-mo’s family, though she’s touched when Joon-mo cradles her head and pats her shoulder, telling her not to cry.

In the present, Ye-jin ruefully notes that she’s confiding a lot in Seung-chan, and he looks pleased at that, reminding her that she can talk to him whenever she wants. She ruffles his hair affectionately, which makes him even more bashful.

Ye-jin’s the one who points out that his phone’s been ringing all this while, and it’s only now that Seung-chan notices and hurriedly assures Joon-mo he’s on his way back. He dashes off, then returns to give Ye-jin a bow before running off again. And that’s when she finally changes his saved ID in her phone log, from “Door Dent” to his actual name.

Brownnosing PD Hong-soon spies Office Nazi driving in a fancy convertible and fixates on how she can afford the car. He wonders whether she’s siphoning office supply money to fund her lifestyle (which would take her a hundred years to amass that amount, Joon-mo points out) or blackmailing higher-ups. Ye-jin asks if he likes her, tired of hearing about this for days on end.

Hong-soon asks Ye-jin for her help on a special broadcast he’s putting together of KBS Big Show, a music concert program. The special features families of politicians and bigshots as guests, and he’s got his eye on sucking up to the VIPs and asks Ye-jin to manage the stage performances (which she points out is his job).

Cindy is slated to perform and hears that this program often uses PDs from other shows, which makes her wonder whether any 1N2D PDs might be working there. Her manager oppa guesses she means Umbrella PD, and for one hot second she looks alarmed that he knows about her interest—until he declares that she must be worried Seung-chan will muck things up.

He’s about to make the demand to keep Seung-chan far away from the show when Cindy snaps at oppa to stop reading extra meaning into her words, to which he points out that she’d ordered him to read more the last time.

In anticipation of their new season’s premiere, the 1N2D team makes a pool betting on their first episode’s ratings. They range from 7 percent (pessimistic, but certainly not likely to happen, says CP Kim) to 15 percent (overly optimistic, though it makes them all feel good), until Seung-chan offers up a precise 6.8 percent prediction with all the research to back it up. It kills the mood, though not as much as Joon-mo assuring his team that he has a really good feeling about this season—strangely, his optimism puts his team in panic mode.

The FD explains to Seung-chan that Joon-mo has a reputation for jinxed predictions—if he thinks something will be great, it’ll tank, and vice versa. Flashback to Joon-mo insisting everything we know to be false: that Lee Seung-gi should only sing and not do variety, that Suzy is the least appealing of her group, and that Norazo will be the face of Hallyu. He’s so reliably wrong that managers go to him for his opinions—and then do the opposite. (Ha, it’s running joke on the real 1N2D that Cha Tae-hyun has terrible luck, always guessing the exact opposite of what’s true, to comical results.)

Showtime. Seung-chan’s family welcomes him home as they all sit around waiting for the show to come on. CP Kim, on the other hand, has to actually beg his daughter to turn the station from competitor show Running Man to 1N2D instead.

Seung-chan’s parents are excitable and enthusiastic, though as the show goes on, the mood grows quieter and quieter—they don’t quite see the appeal of the show and Dad wonders, “Why do they sound the laughing noises when things aren’t funny?” Seung-chan: “It’s supposed to be funny…”

Then the show airs the bit of Seung-chan and Cindy hiking through the woods, him catching her when she trips, and him bending down to tie her shoelace. It’s a lovely romantic moment and Cindy smiles to watch it—although it puts Seung-chan’s family in an uproar that some hussy who dances in her underwear would dare make their precious son stoop to tie her shoe.

Joon-mo and Ye-jin watch together, and she comments that Seung-chan looks good onscreen, and manly—a remark that Joon-mo doesn’t appreciate. But a bigger problem strikes when a mistaken caption comes onscreen, labeling their location with the wrong province name. Eek!

Ye-jin steps aside to take a call from Joon-mo’s mother, who asks her to make sure Joon-mo makes his blind date with the prosecutor’s daughter. He’d missed the first one and is refusing to go to the rescheduled date (to Ye-jin’s pleasure), and when Mom threatens to barge into his home herself to see about his hidden woman, she hastily promises to do what she can.

The caption error is going to be a headache to deal with, and Joon-mo’s already dreading the fallout. Ye-jin tries cheering Joon-mo up, then broaches the topic of his date—but before she can say much, he tells her he already went on it. Huh.

She looks him face to face while he studiously avoids meeting her eye, and she calls him out on the lie. It makes her conclude that he heard her confession after all, and he’s drawing the line between them. He insists she has it wrong, calling her confession an accident—and if he acknowledged it, things could get awkward between them. “We’re good right now,” he says. “It’s comfortable.”

Disappointed, she just agrees and says she caused the accident and apologizes for the inconvenience. “You’re right, it was an accident. I didn’t mean it,” she says. “But strangely, right now I’m a lot more embarrassed and hurt than when I’ve been dumped by someone. You did this.”

She retreats to her room and buries herself under the covers, and Joon-mo can’t do anything but feel terrible.

Ratings are posted at the office, and turns out, Seung-chan was right on the money. He wins the pool and everyone hands him cash, which doesn’t make him feel any better—especially when Joon-mo pettily pays him in singles. He compliments Seung-chan’s foresight sarcastically, and word spreads quickly about his supposed clairvoyance.

Seung-chan’s broadcast appearance makes the Office Nazi look at him differently, too, and when he goes to her desk on an errand, she hands him a ream of paper he didn’t even ask for. “Keep it, and use as needed,” she says breathily. Omg, that’s hilarious. Then she asks him about her future, hoping he can read her fortune.

Joon-mo is taken to task for the caption accident, and stays late writing a report of how the accident came to pass, and how the critical issue with accidents is how you handle the aftermath. He looks over at Ye-jin, wondering what to do with both accidents.

Seung-chan catches up to Ye-jin as she’s heading home, bounding up to her wearing a huge smile. He makes up the excuse of wanting meat for dinner to invite her along, and buys expensive beef that he grills for her. She tells him that Joon-mo heard her confession after all, and when he asks what she likes about Joon-mo, she sighs that she doesn’t know. She asks him what he liked about his sunbae, and he thinks it over: “She’s pretty… and… she’s pretty.”

Ye-jin figures that men just need women to be pretty, and says wistfully that to Joon-mo, she must be a comfortable longtime buddy: “I must not be pretty to him.” Seung-chan blurts, “You’re pretty.” She looks up in surprise, and he repeats, “You’re pretty too.” Aw, so sweet. It makes her smile, though she just takes the kind words as evidence of his improved social skills.

Joon-mo sits around waiting for Ye-jin to come home, visibly disappointed when it’s kid bro Ye-joon instead. Ye-joon guesses that they fought and offers up the information that Ye-jin’s looking into month-to-month housing, and does his Cupid thing by trying to make it seem like part of a dating game power play so Joon-mo can step in and dissuade her. But when he does ask Ye-jin about it, he finds that she’s serious, and that moving out is her method of cleaning up her “accident.”

Hurt, he tells her to do whatever she wants, which he seems to regret right away. But she leaves the apartment and spends the night at her office rather than coming back home.

In the morning, the bratty writer is first in and sees Ye-jin sleeping in a chair, and offers her something to cover up with. It’s a grudgingly nice gesture from the rude upstart… until she drops a towel over Ye-jin’s face, saying she’ll want to cover that up. God. Why are you still employed anywhere? I don’t get her, but I hate her. Learn manners and get off my lawn!

It’s the day of the Big Show taping, and Ye-jin gets her crew in place, which includes Seung-chan on standby duty, making sure all the performers have everything they need.

Cindy arrives in the parking lot, and runs into Lee Seung-gi, playing a hilarious version of himself that may very well be true, where he’s super nice and helpful, but mostly because that’s his established image and he’s in too deep to risk damaging it. He adds that he’s envious of Cindy for being able to get angry and act out whenever she wants, since that fits her bratty image.

Cindy rolls her eyes and wonders why he went for the perfect boy-next-door image in the first place. Seung-gi says you don’t know what’ll stick when you debut, so you just go with what works. He admits that it’s stressful keeping it up all the time, but whispers a secret: There’s a special group of celebrities with good images, which includes Yoo Jae-suk (national MC known for being awesome) and Sean of Jinusean (famously philanthropic with his wife, Jung Hye-young).

Cindy asks how that gathering helps relieve stress, and Seung-gi says they compete with things like community service and donations. LOL. That’s awesome and hysterical. You guys would relieve stress by doing more good deeds. Then Seung-gi rushes off to help a boy who tripped and makes a photo op of it.

Cindy watches Seung-gi’s display shaking her head, but when it’s time to ready for her performance, she wants to change her image up this time, ditching the strong, sexy look for a softer, cuter one. She asks her manager if the PDs will be by to check on her before the show, and oppa is proud to inform her that he told them to leave her alone today. She glares, and he asks, “Was that… not right?”

He fixes things by bungling them again, naturally, and sends Ye-jin in to check on her, having demanded the PD in charge to come in person. Cindy says very casually that she only meant for minor checks, which could fall to a lower PD, and Ye-jin’s happy to call in Seung-chan instead.

Cindy sits up straighter when he enters, and perks up visibly as Ye-jin informs her that Seung-chan will be going through all the pre-show checks with her.

As Ye-jin and Seung-chan leave the dressing room, Seung-gi grabs her from behind in a bear hug, and they have an enthusiastic reunion that sours the expression on Seung-chan’s face. Ah, I love when he’s jealous.

It says something about Seung-chan’s improvement in feigning innocence that I’m not entirely sure he’s being serious when he says that he didn’t know Seung-gi was a singer, and brings up one of the dramas he did AGES ago (rather than, say, any of the huge hits in the meantime) which his mother loved, and then gets his character’s name wrong to boot.

Ye-jin jumps in to sing Seung-gi’s praises, but in the process inadvertently ruffles Seung-gi’s feathers by getting his song titles wrong. Ha, Seung-gi is unexpectedly sensitive about this, correcting her minor errors (“Marry Me” instead of “Will You Marry Me,” for instance). They head off for coffee together and leave him behind, sulking.

Cindy smiles at Seung-chan as they head off to the stage together, and her manager and stylist are absolutely floored: “Did she just… smile? Not sneer, or snort, but just smile?”

Seung-chan gets Cindy miked up for her performance, and she stands frozen with heart pounding as he leans close to affix her mic pack. Then he apologizes for the discourtesy before leaning in even closer, brushing her hair aside, and fixing the earpiece that’s slipped. It’s a wonder she doesn’t melt right into the floor.

Next he ushers her to the lift to rehearse her entrance, offering her a hand, which she clasps, and then grabbing her arms to steady himself when the lift lurches. All the while Cindy clenches her fists tightly, trying to act cool on the surface while he remains oblivious.

CP Kim and Hong-soon stuff themselves on their lunch break, only to run into the station director on their way back, who suggests lunch. Both of them are ever keen to seize opportunities to get in with their superiors, so they uneasily agree to another lunch, though CP Kim is the smarter of the two brownnosers and excuses himself to check on the show, earning extra points for his dedication.

Ye-jin is onstage preparing for the show when a mechanized platform begins moving onto the stage. She calls over to Cindy, who’s standing in the middle of the stage with eyes closed, listening to something, and when she sees that Cindy isn’t aware that she’s in the platform’s path, she rushes forward to shove her out of the way. In the process, Ye-jin gets hit with the platform and falls with a thud.

Seung-chan hears of the accident and races for the hospital, where he asks about the KBS accident. He’s directed to an area, but to his surprise, it’s Cindy lying in the hospital bed. He asks for Ye-jin, but Cindy doesn’t know where she went.

Turns out Ye-jin got up from being hit, only to see that she’d shoved Cindy into the lift pit, hurting her ankle. He finds Ye-jin in the waiting area nursing a bruised arm, and she’s defensive about being hurt too. Seung-chan is so relieved she’s okay that he just smiles doofily while she complains about Cindy getting all the medical attention while she has to wait.

Joon-mo is out with his team scouting locations when a message pings in Hong-soon’s chat room. He ignores it, thinking it more nonsense, so it takes a while for him to actually read it. (In typical Hong-soon fashion, he makes the accident announcement all about his hardship in directing the show alone.)

Ye-jin and Seung-chan head to check on Cindy, having heard that the doctors recommended a minimum four-day stay in the hospital. They encounter a wall of Cindy’s oppa fans outside her wing, who hear that they’re PDs and ask for information—is it true somebody pushed Cindy onstage? Ye-jin gulps and says she knows nothing, and when the oppas recognize Seung-chan from 1N2D, she hurriedly pushes him along before they get caught up by the fanboys.

Ye-jin approaches cautiously, but Cindy’s surprisingly reasonable about the accident, saying that she knows it wasn’t intentional and that she doesn’t blame them. She even says it afforded her a rare chance to sleep more than three hours, and will consider it a nice break.

CEO Byun is of a different mind entirely, though, and arrives in high dudgeon, slapping the manager oppa for letting this happen. Then she turns to Cindy oozing premeditated concern, saying how of course her injury is most important, and she worked so hard to cancel all Cindy’s engagements for the day, but she absolutely must make her Japan event in two days because the breach fee is so high.

Ye-jin balks at this disregard of doctor’s orders, and Seung-chan chimes in with his own protests. Together, the two defend Cindy’s right to rest, citing potential legal ramifications if she insists despite the medical diagnosis.

Then as they leave Cindy’s wing, they see the wall of fanboys outside and Ye-jin grabs Seung-chan’s hand tightly. He smiles bashfully the whole time, as Ye-jin pulls him past the fans’ clutches.

Meanwhile, Joon-mo hurries back to Seoul, receiving no answer on Ye-jin’s phone and getting stuck in bad traffic. Cindy listens dully as CEO Byun presses her to make all her engagements, Hong-soon bemoans his bad luck at actually having to direct his show (instead of hobnobbing with the VIP guests), and Ye-joon looks for new apartments while wishing they could stay here.

A look at Chapter 6 gives us the lesson for today, regarding broadcast accidents: “No matter how much you reflect on it, it’ll happen again.”

Cindy’s manager oppa trembles in the aftermath of being slapped, while Cindy cries to herself in her hospital bed.

Joon-mo pulls up to the hospital just as Ye-jin walks out with Seung-chan, and in his great relief to see her in safe health, he does his usual (wrong) thing and covers it up by picking on her. He asks after Cindy instead, blaming her for the accident and clucking that he knew she’d get into trouble. Aw, don’t you rub salt in the wound!

So when he tries to check on her arm injury, a stung Ye-jin recoils and says she’s sorry for hurting his cast member and making his life difficult.

She walks off crying, and Seung-chan finds her and silently hands her a handkerchief. She asks why he’s always around to see her making mistakes and asks to be left alone.

“Sunbae,” he says seriously. “I’m sorry too. I think I’m about to cause an accident.”

Then he steps forward to cradle her head and hold her to him, in a position that echoes teenage Joon-mo.

EPILOGUE

Seung-gi surprises Ye-jin backstage, and while he’s heaping on the compliments, Seung-chan watches sourly and trudges off feeling jealous. But then he spies Seung-gi’s name on the dressing room door, takes a furtive look around, and whips out a pen.

He scribbles furiously for a while, and then the door opens and Seung-gi steps out. He greets Seung-chan with alacrity, then bounds off to do more good deeds for a passing writer. And Seung-chan looks back at his graffiti with a satisfied smile: Instead of reading “Lee Seung-gi nim,” it now just reads “Lee Seung-gi.” Oooooh, that’ll show him!

COMMENTS

I love Seung-chan so much, in all of his iterations, and it’s no wonder that Kim Soo-hyun has another hit on his hands. How is it that every project he does is a career-making one? Some of this must be attributed to luck and good fortune and good projects, but at this rate, his amazing success rate really has to point to his talent. I know he’s acting, particularly since he’s played such a wide range of personality types at this point, but his Seung-chan feels completely real and in the moment, which is a huge part of the reason he’s so compelling. My admiration may be for Kim Soo-hyun the actor, but all of my sympathies and emotional investment is with Seung-chan the character.

I love that Seung-chan is childishly petty while at the same time conveying a wisdom that speaks of greater maturity. His juvenile pranks in earlier episodes regarding his noona crush were funny as comic beats on their own, but the show has tapped into something even better by repeating that dynamic with Ye-jin as the cause, because I care about her (and his crush on her) in a way that I didn’t care about his noona. And now that he’s cluing in (a little bit, and in pieces) to how to be sarcastic or roundabout or doubletalking, and gets to use his reputation as a clueless kid as his shield. It’s the best thing to see him learning how to say the opposite of what he means, and dishing things back to Joon-mo.

Of course, when it really matters he’s the most honest and stiffly principled of everyone, so I’m glad that this foray into sarcasm and passive-aggressiveness isn’t, say, tainting his eternal soul. He’s straightforward in an admirable way, which contrasts with Joon-mo’s passivity.

Granted, Joon-mo is the one who acts more like a normal person, with all of a normal person’s attendant insecurities, fears, and defensiveness. I’m mad at Joon-mo right now and reserve the right to hold today’s episode against him for a good long while (okay, at least another episode or two), but I totally understand his reactions. Seung-chan had it right by calling him cowardly, but it’s not more cowardly than the average person trying to protect themselves and fearing rocking the boat—better to hold onto the thing you want than to dare hope for the moon, isn’t it?

It’s the classic underachiever’s dilemma, where trying to protect yourself actually ensures yourself against the one thing that would make all that pain worth it. But in this mode, you’re more about hedging your bets and hanging on to what you have than venturing out into the unknown. It’s ironic that his comment about editing was all about giving up something good to hold onto something better, because from the perspective of us, the omniscient viewer, the “something better” would be to have Ye-jin’s love, which is what they both want. But from his limited perspective, he can’t know that, and so for him something better is the bird in the hand, not the two in the bush.

I’m not sure where things are headed for Cindy, but I really like the way the show depicts her budding feelings—it’s all in the sidelong glances and hopeful looks, and what’s not said rather than what is. When we’re in her point of view, all time slows to a crawl and every one of Seung-chan’s movements is magnified in glorious slo-mo… and then we cut over to him and he’s going about his business briskly, not noticing that this very small touch, interaction, or look is a momentous thing to her. It’s so reminiscent of a youthful crush, and makes me thrill a little for her while also feeling pre-emptive pity for the fact that it’s all unreciprocated.

I suppose the romantic feelings are unreciprocated for Seung-chan too, but that dynamic feels different to me, because you can see that he’s becoming an important person to Ye-jin. She may not love him, but he’s definitely a comforting presence, particularly since her supposed best friend is actively inflicting wounds now. (Seriously, Joon-mo. You’re on my shit list for the week.)

I don’t know yet how I want this romantic tangle to work out, because I like Ye-jin and Seung-chan so much that I want both of them to get what their hearts want, but those things are at odds with each other. But maybe the important thing isn’t their romantic roles for each other but their friendship ones, where she’s a guiding hand in his career struggles and he’s a spot of comfort in hers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

-- is all i can say. i need to calm down. omg. why. MY UMBRELLA COUPLE OTTOKE. i do love seungchan's relationship with yejin, but i don't feel that they're equal. both yejin and joonmo have this deep-rooted problem that they need to solve, and i would love to see them man up to their feelings. no matter how nice yejin will become toward seungchan, he will always be her puppy and that kind of dynamic annoys me so much.

ALSO HOW CAN YOU RESIST IU'S EYES?!?!?! come on, producers, don't let me down!

Kim Soo Hyun has been amazing in this show right from day 1. He's just so charming and talented. Recently I feel as though some people forget (or purposely try to forget) that he's actually an exceptional actor despite being the current biggest Hallyu star. Its like there is a misconception that young Hallyu actors only sail by their fangirls' support when in reality, Kim Soo Hyun is amongst the best actors of his generations. He can start right from scratch today and be able to bring himself back to the heights he reached because of how talented he is.

Back to topic at hand, I'm shipping Seung Chan and Ye Jin because other than the obvious chemistry, she is the girl Seung Chan actually likes. Lets see if he eventually takes a different route...

KSH is doing a great job w/ this role, but his acting, while good, hasn't been exactly eye-opening in his previous roles.

CTH doesn't even seem like he's acting and there's no higher compliment to an actor than that.

Disagree, Completely.

The reason Cha Tae Hyun may seem like he is not acting is because he is not i.e. he himself has said this is a PD/not-married-with-children version of Cha Tae Hyun. It takes no special (key word) effort or talent to act like who you are on a daily basis. That's basically easy which he himself has also hinted at. The real acting compliment is for someone who acts the opposite of who he is in real life and/or his previous character. Cha Tae Hyun is a great actor but it is Kim Soo Hyun that has the huge burden of washing away the image of a character as impactful, popular and iconic as Do Min Joon. That he could do it so darn convincingly in the first moment he came back on screen - there is no higher compliment to an actor than that.

@Fan

Agree to everything you said. Word by word.

@bd5

I was about to reply to you earlier, but I realized you're repeating yourself in many posts about CTH being the better actor etc etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I completely disagree. He is not bringing something new to the proceedings because this is exactly how he acts in his variety shows (in which I love him so much more than Joon Mo, but that's a tangent)

The reason he looks like he is not acting is because he chose a character so similar to his real life persona that there is no actual need to act or be different. Its like LSG playing a hapless clueless nice guy. Or CSW playing a cook who is bossy, sassy and a genius. Thats who they are, duh it wont look like they are acting, because they in technical terms: aren't really acting.

......what happened to evaluating a performance on its own merits, though? Are we to totally discount what Cha Tae-hyun brings to the table as Joon-mo just because he has the same persona in his variety shows? (which is likely a conscious decision by the writer and director, and also ignores those of us who aren't familiar with his variety persona).

According to you he isn't acting at all, and if anything that's a bigger compliment to his performance than you think. Because I'm not so convinced that what we see on-camera on variety shows isn't an act either. Several variety personalities have admitted to playing up or 'acting' to make things more entertaining, so it's apparent that the persona is not the person. You've made the mistake of assuming they are one and the same.

0

@pogo

You can take my comment as a compliment all you like if it makes you feel better, its not like I'm not stopping you... Thanks for pointing out my apparent mistake but what you think about his real life persona and his variety persona is your own judgement which I have no reason to care for or bother with. Because irrelevant on whether he is putting up a so-called act in his varieties or whether its real, the point is that he brings nothing new or special that would differentiate Joon Mo from Cha Tae Hyun I see weekly. Thats not to say he is not doing a good job because he is. But that is also saying that his performance is hardly as impactful or impressive as KSH's because creating a character completely different from what you were known for (as @fan described) is far more defining for an actor than just looking as though he isnt "acting". But, you know what? Each their own because we all have our way of judging acting. You dont have to agree with me and I most certainly dont have to do the same.

Still asking: Does he need to put an extra effort on such an easy task? He can act hands down. This drama is not exactly a Shakespeare's play and all the overanalyzed comments sound a bit much for a 12-episode kdrama-slash-variety programme.
Let's not kill all the fun on our "surgical" tables and under our "knife". It's entertainment and a hobby for us, right?

0

@kalel

No he doesnt. Why is why he is not a stand out to me. Simple.

Also, just a free friendly advise: If you're visiting the comment section of a drama and then complain about viewers overanalyzing, I think you're in the wrong place. Jus sayin'.

0

We're visiting the comment section for fun and the jokes on the drama and to each other, Klaus, right? Not for the nagging part and the (slight?) people-bashing! Just sayin'...

0

@kalel

We are? Noope. But you probably are. The comment section is meant for many things including in depth analysis of characters, plot, actors and writing. Of course people swoon too. Its not simply for "fun/jokes" (whut?) or this place would have 50 comments instead of 300. "Slight people-bashing"? LMBO if you mean pointing out that an actor is not as impressive as the other is what you normally call "bashing", then you're wrong because I'm definitely visiting to see people do just that (:

Ouch, it's kinda harsh to say no real effort is given by Cha Tae Hyun. Like ok, I admit I found the light in KSH after I started this, he was just ok but here he blew my mind. But I'm pretty sure CTH did put a lot of efforts as well.

As for me CTH is still about 20 level above KSH. And that's saying a lot because I respect KSH so much.

That's the thing people get WRONG about "acting" - whether the character of JM is like CTH doesn't mean that CTH doesn't have to ACT the part (and I don't think the 2 are entirely similar based on what I have seen of CTH on variety shows).

CTH still has to act the varying emotions that his character experiences/goes thru, but get zero semblance that he is acting the part as opposed to being that character.

Too many times, people are drawn by more flashy characterizations (which is why actors taking the parts of unusual or handicapped characters or even real life figures tend to win awards), but it's when the actor/actress ceases to be seen as acting is when the craft is being done at its best.

While KSH is doing a real good job w/ his character, I still get the sense that he is acting the part.

Totally agree! CTH to me is brilliant, i don't feel,or see or hear him acting at all. He is just CTH. The best thing about KSH is that he is meticulous, he thinks this through and carries it exceptionally well.
YG on the other hand is betting on the fact that she has a fan base who loves her and will support her despite contrived acting and over acting...even with ridiculous wardrobe that does not really go with her character or does she have one?????

There is no real basis why Seung Chan likes her, she bullied him, gave him nightmares about going to work, changes her attitude 180 degrees once she finds out the repair cost is non negotiable, takes advantage of his gullibility by paying him back in coins. This woman is pretty rotten if you ask me. If such people exist in real life, SC would be so intimidated by her that he would turn the other way every time he sees her, let alone develop a crush.

The only reason he likes her is it's the writer's convenient way of prompting JM to face his fear of confrontation. Again in real life, there may never be a confrontation but this a drama and there are too hints in the story why YJ and JM are meant for each other. The drunken kiss, the ex-boyfriends testaments, the way he opens all the lids for her when he found out about her wrist, how she keeps savoring the moments they share together with flashbacks, looking at their old photos and keeping the milk bottle cap.

I think it is kind of a shame that a lot of people are more focused on the romance and loveline when there is more to the story than just the romance aspect of it. but i am somehow afraid that the writing may end up shifting to include more romance than the behind-the-scenes of the entertainment industry. that would be such a waste considering how the show is called "The Producers". I'm expecting to see more of the working culture of producers in a broadcast station. Sure, the romance would be an icing on the cake but i hope they won't delve too much into it.

But since we're speaking of lovelines and chemistry, I just would like to share my two cents.

Personally, I ship Joonmo & Yejin. They are the couple I could actually see and quite sure of happening at the end as opposed to Yejin & Seungchan or even Seungchan & Cindy.

I guess I could understand why some people would ship Yejin and Seungchan together since they both have chemistry and they have meaningful interactions with each other plus it's Kim Soohyun & Gong Hyojin (It's like a dream pairing for some people). But storywise, it's not really as appealing as Joonmo & Yejin's storyline. Joonmo and Yejin has history and buried feelings that is just waiting to be explored. and they emphasized on that plenty of times. So it wouldn't really make sense to me if they would suddenly make Yejin do a 180 degree change in feelings and have her like Seungchan when for all the past 6 eps it has always been Joonmo on her mind. I know, having a change of heart is possible but we're talking about years of her having those feelings for Joonmo. He is pretty much her first love. It won't be so easy for her to change.

Some people might bring up about how it's easy for Seungchan to move on from his first love so why not Yejin. But the circumstances is so different. Seungchan's crush on his first love was shallow. They don't have a friendship that links them together. Even his reason for liking her was that 'she's pretty'. Yejin's crush on Joonmo, on the other hand, is deep. It stems from their years of friendship.

While Cindy's crush on Seungchan is harmless, I think Seungchan's crush on Yejin might just pose a threat to Joonmo & Yejin's relationship. It would most likely bring out the jealousy in Joonmo and encourages him to finally step up. I think that would be awesome. As much as I love Seungchan and wants him to get what he wants but I can't deny that he's definitely the third wheel in this triangle. hahaha

& lastly if we were to talk about chemistry, I personally think Seungchan and Cindy has more palpable chemistry with each other than Seungchan and Yejin. Or rather Kim Soohyun and IU just has more natural chemistry with each other. I think it probably stems from their real-life friendship which projects well on-screen. It's kinda easy to distinguish between chemistry on professional level and chemistry on a personal level. I actually would love for them to have...

another project together. Probably less likely an acting project because that's a rarity. Maybe a CF or a photoshoot together. That should make some of the Umbrella shippers a bit happier. Because honestly as of now, I just don't see them ever happening since Yejin is all that Seungchan sees. lol. Unless, the writer comes up with a plausible idea on how they could end up together once the Joonmo-Yejin pairing is confirmed. But for now I doubt it. It'll most likely be an open ending for them.

They might have a short lived romance but realize the reality of show biz and decide to focus on their careers instead.

I think this may be one of reasons KSH picked this role, because it's (suppose to) focus on the rookie PD's journey to becoming a somebody in the variety entertainment world.

If he had wanted to do another romantic comedy, it wouldn't have taken him this long to pick a drama after a year + long absence. However, he did decide he take the role after receiving the script for the first two episodes, which was written as a mockumentary without much love line. Due to high expectations for ratings and viewer's resistance toward new the format, the production seemed to have succumbed to follow the typical kdrama formula. If this is the case, I feel bad for KSH and feel that he's been cheated in what he signed up for.

Gah I ship them two so much! Love how their interactions are more in the present compared to Joon Mo's which mostly come in flashbacks. I'm a sucker for best friend-turn-lovers kinda storyline but I have to abandon that for now and start shipping these two already! The thing I love most about this show is every episode resolves around titles of producer's guidebook and how exactly overlapping with it. That book actually seems to me something like " being producer your own life " ^^

As for scenes tump ups for 1.BREATHTAKING Slow mo frustrated Cindy in reversal , 2.SO SAD YJ crying her heart out under trees 3.JUST TOO FUNYY SC playing pranks on his rivals 4. SWEET JM looking at YJ with smile while she is not aware at balcony.

As for pairing maybe it will be like jinx mentioned this ep. how much we sport a pair it will end up wise verse ^^

Unless the writer decides to shock the audience, Seung-chan is basically the conduit/facilitator for Joon-mo and Ye-jin eventually getting together.

SC basically has a crush (puppy-love) on YJ. SC was too socially obtuse to not take YJ's puffery at the onset seriously and thru their repeated contact (whether it be about the car door, Joon-mo, etc.) he has gotten to know the real YJ (her real emotions, insecurities, etc.) where he has grown attached to her.

See this more as a crush since this is probably the closest he's ever gotten to the opposite sex after harboring his one-sided, 1st love crush for yrs (SC seemed to have gotten over that pretty quickly now that he has actually done more than stumble a few words with a woman); and aside from pulling rank, YJ has acted very naturally w/ SC, just like how she is w/ JM so there isn't all that fake being on your best behavior getting in the way of actually knowing a person.

It is kinda funny that SC, while developing a crush on YJ has been totally oblivious to Cindy doing the same towards him, esp. since Cindy is supposed to be the "pretty" which was the sole reason why he a one-sided "love" for his former crush.

YJ is really vulnerable right now and can see how something that has gone from a supervisor-subordinate to a mentor-mentee to a friendship to possibly something more would be attractive to her emotionally, but don't think she is going to go down that route aside from using SC's affection for her to prop up her spirits and it giving JM the kick in the pants to get over his fear/hesitation.

JM desperately wants to keep things "comfortable" b/c he doesn't want to run the risk of losing YJ (whether it be due to her confession not being genuine and//or the ramifications if their having a romantic relationship doesn't end up working out), but in doing so and giving her opposite feedback to how he really feels (such as rebuking YJ for Cindy's injury when he realizes that YJ was fine aside from a bruise on her arm and a wounded pride), he ends up risking being at the exact place that he fears.

The writer has done a great job in making these relationships and their progression seem real (frankly, much better written than YFAS).

As for acting - while GHJ is her excellent usual self and KSH is doing the best acting job that I have seen him do - the one performance that has really blown me away is CTH's.

CTH doesn't seem to be acting at all - he IS Joon-mo (while KSH is also doing a great job, bringing a lot of nuance to his character, still get the sense that he is "acting") - where CTH seems to totally embody JM.

IU's acting has improved some, but as of yet, she hasn't exactly had much to do.

Despite being his 1st non-cameo acting role, Kookie is doing a respectable job as that constantly scheming, brown-nosing PD (a role that seemingly would be more befitting his RM castmate, Haha), but Kookie is doing a good enough job where I don't see him as...

I see it like this: If Joonmo and Yejin can be together, they would have been together by now. I can see this drama exploring the very issues that cannot get them together to get them to move on with their lives. Maybe they are meant to be just friends. This exploration would just be as appealing (my best friend's wedding vibe) regardless whether Yejin and JoonMo will get together. I'll be fine either way though.

I think it is quite telling that physically, Cindy and SeungChan's former crush look similar that, if it was the draw for SeungChan, it would be easier for him to fall for Cindy. Yet, he is pulled towards YeJin for her maturity (most of the time).

I totally agree on Cha Tae Hyun. Ra JoonMo is the most difficult character to play in the drama, I think.

I don't really see it that way - in Joon-mo and Ye-jin's case, fear of losing their friendship blocked them from being open with each other about their feelings previously, but I don't think their case is quite as lost. I mean, look at the kids in Answer Me 1997.

And as for Seung-chan's crush pattern, it isn't really girls who look like Hee-joo, it seems to be noonas like Hee-joo. Ye-jin fits perfectly into that particular pattern, and on a side note, she's a lot nicer to him than Hee-joo ever was.

Although i agree that SC and Cindy have not been that developed and that they lack a lot quality interaction, It may be the very thing that makes them stronger. We all notice that from her point of view she has fallen, and that she has a deep attraction/affection for SC. But through him we see a nonchalant attitude but there's something almost sexy about their his level of comfort with her. I get a good platonic feel from YJ and SC but i guess we'll know for sure how he feels and what JM intends to do about it.

I can ship YJ with both JM and SC. As for Cindy, I sympathise with her but I'm not sure that means I want her to end up with SC, because at the moment her crush is completely one-sided. I actually feel that it would be interesting if the show wouldn't just go down the "two perfect pairings" ending route, not because everyone doesn't deserve a happy ever after, but because I don't need the bow tied so neatly. An open ending, or only one pairing would be perfectly fine, because, for example, in the case of Cindy, I think even if she gets her heart broken (as painful that will be), she has a lot to gain from this experience of liking Seung Chang: it's a way for her to feel feelings she's never felt before, to start caring for people, to start treating others differently and allowing herself be treated differently (not just being a distant, cold star). Rather than her getting her perfect happy ever after immediately, I'd prefer her to see develop a friendship with YJ, who did step in to protect her and who also defended her in the hospital.

Found it a bit of a pity that there wasn't much of the experimental format in this episode!

And I hope Cindy and her manager become friends too, because he actually cares about her as well.

I actually think the friendship part is more important for Cindy than scoring a boyfriend/husband-to-be. Just getting one person that loves her isn't going to help her. Her loneliness is sad, but the solution to her loneliness isn't only one guy. She needs much more than that.

yeah, I'd honestly root for friendships to be formed in this case, and personally I'd love to see a reluctant friendship between Cindy and Ye-jin, to mirror the one between Seung-chan and Joon-mo.

but IU sells the humongous crush and Cindy's vulnerability so well that I end up wanting it to happen for her, even if she hasn't a snowball's chance in hell. She's a total kitten, all sharp claws and snarl on the outside and can't stand all humans, but really wants her tummy scratched by the one human she does like.

First of all I must say that IU has an incredibly sexy deep voice and that lends itself to her character well.

Either pairing is A-ok with me. I feel Cindy-BSC romantic scenes are mostly sexy cos of the lighting/rain and basically the set up. But it's the way Cindy looks at SC that really elevates it and IU deserves credit for that.

With YJ and BSC, it's all SC looking at her and smiling like a goofball which comes across as more puppy love. If/when YJ looks at him in a diff light; I believe it could be incredibly sexy. (SN: I've never felt that KSH has had sexy chemistry with his older costars so we'll see)

YJ-JM is complicated as hell but I can see her moving past this lifelong crush w/ or w/o SC. If they haven't explored a possible r/ship yet, maybe they never should.

This ep made me really like TYJ; she risked serious injury to save someone and did it in a matter of fact way. YJ and SC defending Cindy was another highlight. I don't know how anyone can still say they dislike YJ; she's all bark and no bite.

Most of all I wish that more focus would be on the on goings behind the scenes. I'm disappointed that they have all but removed the interview sessions. I guess they can't risk being experimental with a star cast. And I need to see more of TYJ as a PD and not just with Cindy.

I love this show, I can't even comprehend why exactly. I guess I'm just a sucker for stories that are really close to life stuff and job struggles, e.g. Misaeng, Pinocchio, etc. The love geometry here is aces. At least, right now, it's not as frustrating as most love triangles are in dramaland (ahem, School 2015) because whichever it goes, you all find them endearing. Though, as much as I like the interactions between Ye-jin and Seung-chan, I am so rooting for her and Joon-mo, because there's just so much untapped emotions there that could get super beautiful if only they fully acknowledge it. I also agree with your point, JB, about how Cindy takes each moment with Seung-chan as if they are all that matters: reminds me so much of an old-school crush, hee. I hope the last 6 episodes do well! This is, by far, my favorite character of Kim Soo-hyun <3

It's just that the chemistry between Cindy and BSC is undeniable. You can watch it without subtitles and still feel their chemistry whereas this is not the same for YJ and BSC.

but people looooove the noona romance, specially in Korea.

I'm hoping for CindyXBSC. and more character development for her character.

If they push aside CTH and IU to make time for YJ and KHS, i feel the drama is gonna get boring. to me, there's not much those two can offer as a due. though I don't mind if they end up together. I don't get where the sudden crush on YJ came from tbh.

I really liked IU's acting in this episode. She barely has any dialog so most of her acting comes from all the subtle changes in her facial expression and she did them really well. At this point in the drama, I think all the leads have equally embodied their respective characters and are all doing some great acting. Equally.

I agree. IU got a lot of criticism for her first couple of episodes but when you realise just how much of this episode involves attempting to conceal her true feelings, she's doing great. And her chemistry with Kim Soo-hyun is off the charts despite his character being totally indifferent to her - she nails that.

Realistically, it's going to be a one-sided love for her because Seung-chan simply doesn't register her in any romantic way at all, but she still brings the viewer along for the ride of Cindy's vulnerability, and her swoony feelings for the rookie PD.

This was a fun episode and touching episode.

I so enjoy the side characters especially the Office Nazi, the writers/PD's in Music Banks and 1N2D, Cindy's oppa manager, SC's mother, etc. they add a lot to the show.

JM throw away line about SC rebelling because he's going through puberty made me LOL. I love their relationship.

I don't ship SC with anyone because he's great with Cindy, YJ and JM. So I'm okay if he continues to grow as a person and remains single. Maybe he leaves KSB in the last episode to be a prosecutor which was his original goal. His talents are wasted at KSB and the job isn't a passion for him.

I do need an epilogue with SC's mother meeting "scandalous" Cindy! I want to give props to IU. I can feel her emotions every time she's with SC. She has such a huge crush on him. That elevator scene was kinda hot but then funny since SC was scared by the shaky lift.

KSH is really awesome as SC. And SC is such a wonderful character. Love his petty revenges, honesty and dorky personality.

I enjoy the hell out of this drama, ambiguous ships and all. It's good to see Kim Soo-hyun back in a role that actually requires more of him than looking cool, I feel like it took four years for dramaland to get another look at the potential he showed in Giant and Dream High (he did well in Moon/Sun and YFAS but honestly, compared to his earlier work he was just coasting).

and one thing I especially liked about this episode was Ye-jin sticking up for Cindy in the hospital. She may personally dislike Cindy, and the attempt to appeal to CEO Byun's conscience probably won't work and we'll get an injured Cindy going back to work far too early - but it's good to see anyway.

I am starting to feel very Reply 1994 about Producer. I remember all the earlier comments which suggested that maybe the viewers should focus on the actual show, which was trying something different and experimental, rather than the shipping angle. But I have to say that at this point, I completely disagree with that take. When about 75% of the episode is either shipping based or ship baiting, the fact that your ship is sidelined/doomed/etc. is bound to affect your enjoyment of the show to a massive extent. And considering that the whole mockumentary angle has been played down to the extent of being almost non-existent (at least in this episode), I'm getting a far more regular-drama-feel, so I can't exactly use the experimental style to counter the shipping angst.

Cindy is my favorite character. I adore Seung-chan madly, and I really like Ye-jin and Joon-mo, but there's something about Cindy, as a character and as she's played, that really appeals to me. I feel like, despite criticism to the contrary, IU's managed to do a fantastic job with her limited screentime and limited dialogues. In this episode, her emotions were almost palpable, and I absolutely love how the drama frames them, as javabeans said, that the camera-work and editing in her POV is just so beautifully, believably first love. I would take a great Cindy arc even over Cindy/Seung-chan, because I'm so invested in her. But the problem is that becomes nearly impossible when nearly all of Cindy's scenes revolve around Seung-chan. To root for her, I have to root for them, because that is her arc till now. I could have imagined it being about this experience opening her up emotionally, making her feel things she hasn't allowed herself to feel before, and making her more receptive to happiness. But I feel like that's so difficult at this point to do convincingly with the limited screen-time that she has and half the show over now. Which means her entire arc is almost literally Seung-chan, and being alone at the end of it may be existentially really profound or such, but it would have made for an average drama experience for me.

I'm also disappointed because as much as I love the Ye-jin/Seung-chan dynamic, I'm feeling a very low-key, comfort vibe, which I love in friendship, but it's a bit bland for what I want out of romance. Also, I don't know why the direction isn't adding to it, like they deliberately do with Cindy's POV, when the POV is Seung-chan's in SC/YJ. Holding hands with Ye-jin should be more of an experience for the viewer! He's clearly falling in love, but I get an 'aww that's cute' feeling, rather than the Cindy-falling vibe, which is almost entirely built on intensity, and where every moment together with SC in her POV is remarkably, ridiculously visceral.

Anyway, that's just my issue, and clearly I'm in the minority. But I do so hope that Cindy gets a real arc, even if she's disappointed in love, because IU is...

I think there's potential for more with Cindy's arc - like the demands of her pop star life and maybe finally taking some control over her schedule, not to mention learning to trust people more. But since she's the only one of the four leads who isn't employed by KBS, her storyline tends to be Seung-chan-centric. I won't mind if she ends up alone at the end of the drama (though I really root for that no-chance-in-hell crush of hers) but I want something more to happen in her arc than just falling in love. Personally, I thought one baby step towards it was Ye-jin standing up for her in the hospital despite their previous animosity - I would really like to see that turn into friendship somewhere along the way.

I really think IU is doing a fantastic job, not just by lowered 'idol actor' standards, but in her own right. The framing of the Seung-chan scenes does help in setting the mood, but I've seen enough wooden actresses ruin perfectly framed, shot and lit scenes to know that IU is the real deal - she's living up to her material, and holding up really well against a cast of veterans who would have made a really unfavourable reference point if she couldn't act.

I do think there's a LOT more potential for Cindy's arc, and there's been hints of it, in her relationship with CEO Byun or her idol life or what she actually wants to do (instead of where she clearly feels she's just stuck and is going through the motions), but at this point I'm not sure how much to trust the show in the realization of it, because it hasn't been developed so far, in contrast to how good a handle we have on the lives and histories of the other leads. I wouldn't mind her being alone at the end either, but if her entire arc has revolved around love, and then she ends up alone, I will definitely feel my favorite character's been short-changed, and that it's not a good narrative, because then the character would have lost out to the shock-value aspect of the which-couple-will-get-together quadrangle, which is incredibly frustrating to watch when you're so invested in the character.

I too liked the Ye-jin/Cindy interaction this episode too- especially how Ye-jin was so surprised that Cindy wasn't creating a fuss about what happened, and was instead just accepting of it (and I liked the way IU played it, like watching Ye-jin with Seung-chan always seems to take the fight out of her, as in the earlier scene when she was being lifted over the puddle by him, and Cindy was watching from her car.)

I completely agree with you about IU! I genuinely think she's phenomenal, her non-verbal cues raise the intensity of the scene to such incredible proportions that I am completely absorbed in it. I think there's such a marked difference in the romance from her POV than any of the other scenes, while, ironically enough, hers is the most unreciprocated. Slow motion is used in a lot of the shippy scenes, but it seems most effective in her case because she's actually showing really subtle, kaleidoscopic emotions. For an female actor with limited screen-time to have made the audience ship her with the character with the maximum screen-time, when the feelings are entirely on her part, is a rarity in dramaland, in my experience.

killing it here.

On a completely shallow note, the Cindy/Seung-chan mic scene was incredibly hot. I'm a huge fan of the moment-someone-falls-in-love and it's visible through the change in their gaze (as with Cindy in episode 4), and I'm equally a fan of well-done sexual awakenings, the moment that you know that someone is impossibly, physically attracted to someone else. I like that she's attracted to practically every single thing that Seung-chan is, without him having had to do anything for her at all. He has literally not done a single thing that an averagely nice person might- lending her his umbrella, helping her on her feet, tying her shoelaces because she was unable to at that moment, lending her his book, etc. There is no actual grand gesture, or anything out of the ordinary, but that it's so momentous to her- that the umbrella, the headphones, the book, the shoelace have so much significance for her, is beautiful. And I love that in this episode she's full-blown crushing on him, and is completely physically attracted to him as well. While these are the kind of things that Seung-chan does for Joon-mo and Ye-jin and possibly his entire team on practically an hourly basis. Considering Seung-chan's character and his usual mode of operation as the guy who gives more- leaving the legal profession for his first love, the amount that he's doing for Ye-jin in every episode, it's a very interesting reversal, and a marked difference from his dynamic with almost every single other character on the show.

totally agreed that the mic scene was hot.

Which is not a word I ever thought I'd use to describe any part of a performance by IU, but she's the one who makes that scene - yes, the way it's shot lets you know exactly how physically close he is to her in that moment, but IU's face and body language is the thing that makes you FEEL it.

I am still !!!!!!!!!!!!!! over it. I love how, during these moments with Seung-chan, when the POV is Cindy's, he literally fills up the screen, and every single second is stretched. I thought IU and Kim Soo-hyun would be cute and low-key in general, because they are adorable-looking people (ala Suzy and KSH in Dream High or even KSH and IU's own friendship in Dream High), but I could have never in a million years have imagined, without actually seeing it, that the chemistry would be this palpable, and they could be that- there's no real other word for it- hot. Also, because Seung-chan not being affected by Cindy, ironically enough, makes a difference to the scene, because he's not making his bashful/pleased-puppy face, like he does when he's actually in love (holding hands with Ye-jin, for instance), and his expression is neutral throughout as he concentrated on whatever he's doing, which helps add to the intensity. I am part amused at that aspect (that his not being in love makes the scene physically intense), even as my ship sinks, haha.

With the slow-motion and tight close-ups of the Cindy-Seung-chan scenes, there's very little room for error if an actor fails to find the right expression for that scene. If IU wasn't able to find the right expressions, it would have magnified her failings for sure. Instead, it makes her even more believable, especially in the mic scene where her physical hyper-awareness of Seung-chan takes the step up from swoony to sexy.

And you're right about Kim Soo-hyun's neutral expression just making the scene even more intense, because the moment and the feelings are all Cindy's. Sure, he actually has about as much interest in her as he does in an umbrella, but the poor girl has fallen HARD and it's pretty apparent even in the non-close-up scenes.

(and yeah, the mic scene was certainly steamy......I mean, who'd have thought IU had it in her?)

0

In a way it reminded me of Lee Seung-gi's hilariously exaggerated version of himself saying that you don't choose your image. I feel like that's the image that IU herself is caught in as the Nation's Little Sister. Suzy now has more of a leeway, as miss A transitions to a sexier concept, but IU just looks so young and vulnerable that her transition is automatically more difficult. (Like when she was sitting alone with those huge headphones in the last episode while everyone else ate on the 1N2D set, she looked adorably 14 or so.) All the roles that she's yet played have also been catering to that same image. So this break-out reversal in Producer is certainly astounding.

This is a show dealing in so many relationships, but this one alone has been highlighted in a positively sexy light. It's all one-sided, and yet the sexual tension is so visceral because of Cindy's POV, and how she's feeling in the moment. Enough that you can feel exactly what she's feeling to the point where it's almost easy to forget that Seung-chan is a non-participant in the scene. As much as I love the friendship-comfort-warmth etc. dynamics between the other three, I'm much more unused to seeing this particular dynamic in dramaland, so I'm definitely very invested in it.

0

Let us not yet accept that our ship has sunk! It may be a little wobbly right now but we still have some time. Keep our hopes up!

It turns out Cindy is a very interesting character. Somehow she's the one-sided love that is not annoying. Given how unfortunate her life is (ironically at that), I really hope for her to find some happiness. All the more lovely if that happiness comes from someone so normal.

Please, writer, DO NOT SINK MY SHIP.

0

I read the word 'steamy' used in a couple of comments in connection to them, and I have to keep reminding myself that it's IU and KIM SOO HYUN doing steamy. Like, wrapping my head around that concept is very hard, even when I can see it, LOL.

Haha, I'm at that point in my life where I want to write fanfic and make my own headcanon. The last couple to make me write fic was Kang Ja/Bok Dong in Angry Mom, whom I adored MADLY, so judging by that alone, my investment in Cindy (and Cindy/Seung-chan) is indeed very high!

I think it really speaks of IU's acting that there ARE so many Seung-chan/Cindy fans and that people are angry that she doesn't get enough screen-time. Very rarely have I ever seen a relationship that is almost entirely one-sided on the girl's part (and probably not endgame) which has people rooting for her. There are always far more supporters for male second leads than female second leads, no matter how nice. And while IU isn't second lead according to what the producers have said, there's no denying her screen-time is much lesser than the others', and we know very little of her background, which definitely sets her in almost-second lead territory. But IU's been doing extremely well in the few scenes that she does have, and in just that much time, she has me completely aboard her unrequited love.

I have been watching her works since she was in her twenties and the quirkiness, raw emotion, vulnerability, and quiet strengths she brings to the character still surprises me. She is like the antidote to the endless string of generic actings out there.

GHJ fans, I believe, are a mature lot (not old but mature). They are just fine watching her on screen with or without the romance played out the way they wished it to be.

I think it is even more daring of her to take projects with the younger cast and be subjected to calling her "old an ugly" just because their characters connect well.

"there is nothing there at all but I think the “fan” factor is at work here..since GyJ has a fan base who wants their favorite star to end up with BSC"

I'm fan of Gong Hyo jin and from what I know, most of GHj's fans dont mind at all with who TYJ end up with... most of us even staying out from shipping TYJ with any male character. Even here in DB, many familiar names (GHJ\'s fans) want TYJ end up with RJM better.. dunno which fanbase you're talking about.....

from what I've observed, GHJ's fans mostly more focus on story-line than love-line
and objectively/wisely, it's pretty clear which love-line making more sense...
I'm mostly agree with @pogo and believe many GHJ's fans have same view-point as well... also many GHJ fans respect IU better and give fairer judge to Cindy character compare to others...

I feel Cindy's character and do hope there will be open ending between her and SC... IU doesnt great, but doing good and I give credit to her for the intense chemistry between her and KSH..

I'm my self, prefer my gongvely get paired-up with same age or older actor than younger actor, because it makes me sad that people keep talking about how much older GHj than KSH, talking about visual looks... I wont mind though it GHJ get criticism for her acting or fashion or attitude, but for her looks? :( saying no matter what, her looks doesnt match to be KSH's lover... even using "disgusting" word.... >_< while in fact, GHJ has been pairing with many much more good-looking actor than KSH and have more sizzling chemistry with them all... hate everytime people bringing up about looks, while looks is given by God, it's not like we can chose to be born with certain looks...

I am sure that Ye Jin's brief encounter with Lee Seung Gi already has made someone out there think to get GHJ and LSG in a project together. *fingers crossed*

It really saddens me that the level of "criticism" towards GHJ (and also CTH, I was shocked!) just because the story unfolds the way it does, has stooped that low. Because the rich setup and its supposed experimental approach the drama has established would have made an interesting characters and relationship study. This is definitely one of the more interesting piece that comes out so far.

Fortunately the criticism for GHJ & CTH seems to be localized to some ifans rather than kfans. But unfortunately IU is getting unnecessary criticism from kfans. All actors are doing a good job imo.

But the ageist and somewhat sexist attitudes are annoying as heck.

I too want Cindy to have her own arc. She is smart and wise for her age although immaturity sometimes get the better of her. She is not cruel to her manager, she handles the stage accident rationally.

The encounter with Lee Seung Gi brings a subtle understanding that even though it's just an image, if you live the image through you could become the image you are projecting. She takes control of her own image and she does not want to be a brat.

She should rebel in a better way, rather than engaging in a passive aggressive battle with the CEO.

What I like about Cindy and her crush is that she is not being pushy about it. She let herself experience it as if it is not SeungChan per se, it's the feeling of falling in love that she, and audience, savoured.

I like what you said about Cindy and not being pushy about her crush! I think that's one of the things I love about the whole thing actually, how she's just savoring everything (since this is possibly the first time she's ever fallen in love) as much as she can and letting herself fall. It's just so sweet and I think a lot of people can identify with that because everyone's had crushes.

I completely agree! I've thought this for a long time, that the comments regarding how mean and bitchy and rude Cindy is (even if they clarify that she's supposed to be that way) are a bit exaggerated, because while I do get the sense of her being in a bubble and rude on occasion, I've never yet felt the diva-for-being-a-diva's sake attitude. She stands up when challenged, but she doesn't seem to ever initiate a confrontation or be unreasonably demanding.

Like I found it very interesting that she, even when she wasn't very interested in Seung-chan, was semi polite to him- slightly annoyed about his long-winded explanation about how she should return the umbrella immediately, but gave him her personal number nonetheless, which is fairly incredible for a celebrity. And every time that he goofs up- getting her lost to the location, leaving her to get drenched in the rain, etc., not giving her any food for a day, we've never seen her actually chew him out for it, as she well could has considering the top star/rookie PD angle. Even without the camera on her, she just took all his mess ups with minimal protest, I think that's a fairly good indicator that she's not a brat per se, even as she has her share of left-over teenage rebellion.

I found the Seung-gi cameo super interesting also because Cindy was clearly the only person that he was truthful with in all his scenes. With every single other character he had this hyper-exaggerated 'nice' image to hold up, but he felt free to tell her that he was dying because of it. I think her blunt nature brings that out in people.

That feeling of falling in love is just so amazingly projected that even when IU's alone in the scene- in that KSH isn't supposed to be feeling anything- it's so fraught with tension and romance, like we can see her overanalyzing the moment as it happens. She's doing such adorably teenage things to be closer to the boy she likes- asking strangers on the internet to deconstruct his actions, reading his book, listening to his music, angling to have him around. I do love that so much, but on the other hand, it's difficult for me to imagine her doing this with any other character than Seung-chan because of who she is, and who Seung-chan is, so in my head those two things- her crush, and her crush being Seung-chan are inextricably tied.

Same. I feel like they should've just explored both couples separately without getting everyone tangled with another. The romance doesn't have to take center stage, just implied like Misaeng or maybe a wee bit more. But I started this interested in the showbiz and stuff, but now I can't help but SHIP because it's what they're shoving in my face. Now no matter which couple is endgame the viewers are already divided. I hope this won't go as crazy as Reply 1994 though.

Ah, it took all of two episodes for the Umbrella Couple to be doused in a thunderstorm and blown away by the wind. Admittedly BSC-YJ are starting to become cute, but I'll still be here using an umbrella to collect the tears I'll shed for my sinking ship lol.

In the midst of all this pairing shuffling, can I suggest one very solid one in my eyes? Cindy x Manager Oppa. Get on this netizens. Make it happen like you avidly are KSH-GHJ.

All kidding aside, I'm really drawn to their relationship. Even if he is often exasperated and 'why-am-I-still-enduring-this-torture', you can still tell that he really cares about Cindy. His concern over Byun CEO jampacking her schedule so she has no time to eat, him noticing her interest in BSC (even if he did mistake it for another type of interest lol), it's apparent that despite Cindy's difficult behaviour, all those years with her has done a toll on his emotions too. He's attached to her pretty much 24/7, and if there was anyone that was close enough to seeing her loneliness, it'd be him. I wish they'd explore this almost father-daughter relationship further, but judging from the screentime Cindy's been getting, it'll be dealt with in 2 minutes and then onto the next plot. Sighhhh.

But aha, Joon Mo is finally showing more of his side of the JM-YJ relationship, and personally, it's pretty obvious that Ye Jin's feelings are not at all one-sided. That side-long look of happiness Joon Mo gave Ye Jin while they were drinking their beers on the balcony because she was trying so hard to cheer him up made me grin stupidly into my keyboard. He cares about her as more than a friend, but as Seung Chan said: he's a coward. I really hope seeing BSC tryna snatch YJ up will spur him into further action, because honestly, they're the couple I'd really like to end up together (even more than BSC-Cindy as much as it seems like the contrary lol).

Let me just finish this comment by saying: that mic and lift seen between BSC-Cindy? HOT. (I didn't know IU had it in her! U GO GURL)

I'd be really impressed with this drama if Seung-chan doesn't end up with anybody. That'd break of the mold of "all leads must somehow end up with each other" like Coffee House. As much as I like Seung-chan, I think he'd be the wiser to come out of the drama as a more matured man and PD. After all, the story revolves around him learning the ropes of the industry.

This is why I think the ships are there to hook casual viewers, but to me, it's more like a slice of life. The editing in between the major scenes, and the nice montage break in the middle of the leads dealing with their everyday life, and even the little lessons of each episode all drive the drama. I like all of the leads too, and could see all of them moving on without their romantic happy endings but being strengthen by their time together. Maybe this is too anti-climatic for folks, though. This is being in the real minority, imo.

Basically sunbaenim is ms. Yejin, but without -nine it's informal. But that wasn't jut that in that conversation. It's like difference between "what Re you doing "and "how do you do" as far as I know English does not discriminate status while speaking but Asian languagea mostly does. As long as they don't give you permission you can't speak casually with your olders or someone you just met. So he seems to just a bit jealous of their casual speaking since sc and YJ become close recently he have tried to address her casually twice (without knowing he always does when he is drunk ^^) and in the and he called her "sunbae" and hugged her.

Lonely celebrity and sensitive commoner ^^ as for age-difference couples pattern it's succesful older and strong willed charming younger what I saw mostly. But in here despite being successful YJ is clumsy and SC indeed a hard worker however not manly but lovely so they would've funny couple and suitable for concept of this show^^ on the other hand Cindy-SC couple would have satisfy expectations of romance and happy ending for everyone so don't be bothered by it anyways ^^

The whole hospital scene also shows how whiny and childish YJ is. Yes, she was injured, but does she need to whine so much to cover her guilt? After so many years of experience as Mubank PD, wouldn't she know how to handle idols? No wonder her subordinate writer disrespect her.

I don't see why JM is the bad guy here, for pretending he didn't hear the confession. Can't there be a possibility that he doesn't love JH (yet)? All he did was to protect JH's feelings. To avoid any awkwardness and to protect the friendship.

On the same note, when JH knows SC has a crush on her, I hope she will reject him clearly, for his sake. Instead of using him to mend her own feelings JM.

In this episode, I am getting less and less convinced anyone can love JH.

All this has nothing to do with my preference of actress/actor potraying their respective roles.

Are you serious right now?? She tried to SAVE Cindy and risked herself. It's Cindy's reaction that should be off-putting; sure she brushed it off but the way she way she did it wasn't exactly nice. As for her 'whining', I'm gonna assume you're talking abt when she had to wait for treatment, are you purposely forgetting that she hit her head as well as injured her hand. She may have gotten up but you can't rule out anything. Plus it was mostly played for laughs.

When YJ and BSC defended Cindy, I saw a possibility of a friendship being formed but some ppl are hell bent on making YJ some sort of villain when she's anything but. Sure I disliked and was annoyed by YJ'S attitude initially but there's no reason to now: especially in this episode.

To me all characters are likable at this point in the show; flaws and all.

Oh man...I've been holding off to comment till now but just hv to speak or my mind might explode. Darn it.

I really really miss the fresh Mockumentary style the FIRST and more newbie director used. The show is now much more mainstream and run of the mill :-( I don't DISenjoy it...but it's not rocking my world anymore crafting-wise.) Im totally rooting for the characters- all of them. The writing has left all sorts of growth and wiggle room potential. But again...not rocking my world like the first ep shaped up to do.

And last gripe. For a show that is supposed to be cutting edge and quirky, can someone explain to me WHY the music -every single bit- is dowdy and predictable and mundane???? Very disappointing. Big super letdown. Doesn't match the proposed freshness of this show at all. At all at all. AT ALL. WAE?!?!?!?! * Sobs into pillow.* I want to LOOOOVVVEEE this show and it's leaving me holding a dying fish. *sob*

I'm still rooting for the Umbrella Couple.
With a handful episodes to go, how can YJ un-love JM, whom she's so in love with, and who loves her back? They've been together for decades - that's so hard to beat.
Besides, I have learned in Reply 1994 not to ship with the girl who loves the guy so much, and who loves her back too, especially if they have been together for decades too.
Anyway, I hope for more development with the Umbrella Couple this weekend.
