Lee Min-ho returns to the big screen with global project Bounty Hunters

Lee Min-ho (Gangnam 1970, Heirs) has signed on to his next project, a pan-Asian blockbuster titled Bounty Hunters, and it’s got my interest piqued—not specifically because it’s Lee Min-ho (although yes, he’s still very pretty), or that it’s got a huge-scale budget (35 billion won, or about $31 million USD), but because it’s described as an action comedy. It’ll be brought to us by Shin Tae-ra, the director of entertainingly absurd action comedies Runway Cop and Level 7 Civil Servant (hey, the movie version was great, okay?). Can Lee Min-ho be funny? I don’t know, but I want to see him try!

There isn’t much given about the plot of Bounty Hunters, though we’re told it’ll feature high action, rollicking comedy, and investigative thrills in a plot that involves bounty hunters and a chase to capture hotel bombers. I can’t promise that the action-chase plot will make much sense—in fact, I’d put my money on the opposite—but I do feel like this director will bring the zany. Did I care about the bioterrorist Russian spy plot in Level 7 Civil Servant, or understand it, or need it to make sense? Not even a little! It was wacky and hilarious and a whole lot of silly fun.

Lee Min-ho’s character is sharp and a skilled fighter who also displays a quirky, cute side—we’ve seen both sides of him before, though not necessarily at the same time. I don’t actually know that he’s a great comedy actor—not the way that Kang Ji-hwan owned director Shin Tae-ra’s prior projects—though I can see him working the humor in a straight-faced, deadpan way. After all, there were moments in Faith, City Hunter, and Boys Before Flowers. Fleeting, but they were there.

In any case, I’m just looking forward to Lee Min-ho tackling an outright, full-on comedy project, which would be a nice change after his more melodramatic recent turns in Gangnam 1970 and Heirs (okay, that was more like melo-lite); I hope this’ll be a good vehicle for him to broaden his range.

Bounty Hunters is a joint production between Starhaus Entertainment (which reps Lee Min-ho), Pegasus Motion Pictures, Harmonious Entertainment Shanghai, and Union Investment Partners. It’ll be filmed in various cities in Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Thailand, and one name mentioned as a potential co-star is Chinese actress Angelababy (Angela Yeung) of movies Temporary Family and Love on the Cloud, and the Chinese version of Running Man.

The film plans to begin shooting in August for a release next year.

I am looking forward to it..
City Hunter was action but not DARK. It is WHY I LOVE it!
I take this project will be even lighter.. :))

I, too, love seeing LMH in any media, but I draw the line at Gangnam Blues. It lost me after the first half hour. The movie was trashy, ugly, and mean, not at all the kind of vehicle for a fine actor and high-quality person like LMH. I hope he'll steer clear of such filthy scripts in future.

LMH can be funny. I thought he was funny im Boys Over Flowers. I'll watch it, however this time I won't drive all the way to L.A. to see it like i did with Gangnam Blues!

I can't be the only person who thinks he's better at comedy than anything else. The funny scenes in City Hunter are some of my favorite LMH moments ever.

Sounds like fun, and I'd really love for LMH to try out new things and challenge himself. He's never done out right comedy before so I'm looking forward to how he fares.

These Chinese-Korean productions are all the rage now. Guess that's where the money is. The K actor then has to be teamed up w a non-Korean actress. I'm so used to looking at Korean faces, w PS and all that others pale by comparison. I'm strictly a K-actor addict!
I jump at mention of LMH, but 'Angelababy'? Nothing personal, but Wish it was Go Ara, Kang Sora, Moon Chae Won, etc. instead.

Finally Lee min ho <3 Action-comedy-drama? Something new for Lee min ho though he showed some glimpses of each in his dramas but never together. =) Yang Mi is going to be the female lead according to Chinese reports, not Angela Baby.

Think he will be great in comedy, before his big break in BoF, didn't he make a career out of playing goofy, comic, dim-witted sweet strong characters (see Mackerel Run, my school ET, Secret Campus, but mainly Mackerel Run :))??

look wise he a 10 plus so he never had to earn a role through acting, I think he could learn to act better, but frankly he never had to, or maybe even asked too.

I don't think that's true, like others in the industry, he was unknown for a while, played small roles,a villan who dies in the middle even, dramas that were not hits before finally having a breakout role in boys over flowers. He is not a bad actor see city hunter, yes some of his projects are questionable and yes his face has played a big role in making him a success which is both a blessing and a curse.his still young and growing as an actor, he's not great YET like kim so Hyun for example but he is good and hopefully he will continue to choose diverse roles that can help him grow and show case his talent.

I might be in the minority but my fave LMH drama was Faith! Suave. d=

I partially worry that the reason he's not as recognised for his acting, compared to Kim Soo Hyun, might be that he's so busy with projects. I agree with you that he needs to be slightly more discerning to find the ones that give him growth and also showcase his talent. I was bored by Gangnam Blues' plot, but I think he acted well - I don't think the film did that well though, so it didn't help him very much.

He's got so many Hallyu fans it's kinda impossible for him to NOT be over-rated. Even the best actor in the entire universe probably doesn't deserve that number of fans.

But he's still a solid actor. He's a master at the old-fashioned leading man thing that's almost impossible to find these days outside of K-dramas. There are plenty of ways he can still grow as an actor, but he knows his craft and continues to grow. He may be uncannily good looking, but I don't get the impression he's sitting back and relying on his looks.

I haven't seen any of his other movies but this piques my interest. I either love or hate action comedies, depending on how they're done.

I really want him to pick up another drama, though, even though some of his drama choices tend to be questionable. I do think LMH is a good actor but I think he needs a good director to really shine (like City Hunter), so I'm hoping that whatever drama project he picks up next has a good director to boot.

I am always glad to see actors trying new things. It is one of the reasons I like Kang Ha Neul. I always feel LMH has tackled somewhat safe roles so far. This will be a good challenge and I don't think he and his "people" would put him up for this if he really couldn't do it.

I guess I'll see it when it hits one of the movie outlets online next year.

Tick, tick, tick...

I think Lee Min Ho can pull off the same acting as Kim Soo Hyun, it's just that the projects he chose or are chosen for him are projects where he only needs to be gorgeous all the time but he was really good in Heirs. Only we've seen him do that kind of role so many times already were thirsting for more diversified role for him. I haven't even seen him guest in a variety show in Korea before. The only variety show I saw him was Guerilla date and its not even a variety show.

Angelababy? I don't like her. I saw her in Running man Chinese vs Running man korea. She's really pretty and she knows it herself so she uses it to her advantage all the time. There's nothing wrong with using your charms, after all she's a celebrity, but she's really annoying. A little humility wouldn't hurt her at all.

Do you understand first the meaning of somebody outshinning someone.. Do you know how many shippers and fans LMH gained after Heirs? you wouldn't imagine in your life time.. its above 10mio and yes 10MIO.. He always outshines whomever steps in the screen with him.

Him outshinning all who steps in the screen with him is well documented.. stop writting BS you have no knowlegde of. We live in a time of online informations and make good use of it in the future.

I think by outshine, xilem was referring to portrayal on screen, acting on screen. Heirs was not a show that showcased LMH's talents as an actor. Did he get fans? I don't doubt it but true fans give constructive criticism because they want to see the actor do better, so they can continue to enjoy their favorite actor. That's what we are talking about here. There are many great actors that may not have his populArity nor fan base. # of fans does not equal great acting. The minute he starts to look at the # of fans as the indicator for his acting prowess, he will fall painfully. I'm a fan that wants him to mature like good wine so I hope he continues to challenge himself so he can continue to do great things.

It's all about the material given to them. I thought Kim Tan character was written so poorly, but LMH still managed to make it work. I don't think Heirs was his best work (that would be City Hunter for me) but he still gained recognition, and yes, millions of fans for his KT performance.

I didn't say it was his best work. I said he was good in Heirs. Heirs was written so badly but he still pulled off his character well. He made do with what he had.

@viros how i writing bullshit if i even watch full heirs ep? popularity gaining is not the same with their performance. i can clearly see kim woo bin wholely carry the drama till the end. the reason why it so popular because lmh tackle the same chaebol with cinderella story which is like by a lot of people especially teenage girls who always fantasied about real life like that and the kim eun suk drama will sure get high rating.. are you a teenage girl? please grow up.. @krisS if we talking about lmh's best work, i do agree with city hunter.

What teenage girls and aren't they also viewers and count?

with there performance? but the question is who are you to judge there performance because you are just one individual and the majority counts..

The love and fans he gained for the as Kim tan compared to his second lead is like throwing a ring into the large arabian desert where the ring is Young do supporters fans gaind where as the desert is the team Kim tan.. talk about outshinning then. its not even debutable and you posting this is just quite hilarious. its nothing but a spam to be honest.

But city hunter and Heirs had large fan following but heirs tops city hunter IMO. fan wise! hack Heirs is the most supported and watched K-drama ever after BOF

LOL! Are we still arguing about LMH best work? City Hunter brought him massive recognition and popularity in China but it was Heirs that propelled him to where he is now and even gaining recognition as hallyu star in Asia inc HK. If you've hit HK you have made it big time. Well done to LMH, he has chosen his roles well. I am not his fan but I guess his fans should respect each other's choice on which is his best role. After all art is subjective.

Sounds like another City Hunter role. Can see why he picks it. It'll help him grow in his popularity especially in China, which means more money for him and his agency. But sadly, don't know if it will help him grow as an actor playing the same type of roles all the time. Personally I admire actors who care more about being a great actor than being a popular one.

He's a good chess player. He piles on commercials after massive Heirs success and now he's planning his exit strategy before military service; hence, this movie. He capitalizes on his popularity and this genre is a safe bet. It has a little of everything for every gender and age bracket. K drama ratings have been all over the place lately so

City hunter showcased that LMH can fight... he's got the skill and agility.. I hope in this action flick they bank on that too..a skilled action actor is what I want to see. Enough of that fast forward fighting scenes, that's cheating for an amateur actor who's trying to be an action hero. Action-comedy movie can also have some kickass fighting. The likes of A-list actors such as Bruce Willis and Jacky Chan.. LMH has the looks it wouldn't hurt to show some badass moves.

OK, I acknowledge I'm a fan of this guy, but, I am wondering when he's going to start acting again, instead of promo-ing products and modeling? Getting sick of all the news about the light weight stuff he's been doing; as he's so pretty and popular he doesn't really have to do anything gritty, like acting anymore.

Sooo, me LMH, get off your high horse and get back to using your other talents, ones that require more than a pretty pose.
