Joo-won goes on the run for Yong-pal

Ah, it’s nice to have an intrigue-filled set of stills as our first look at a drama, and here we are with the promise of thrills for SBS’s upcoming melodrama Yong-pal. The series centers around a talented surgeon who takes illegal side jobs treating the rich in secret, operating under the code name Yong-pal, and I’ve been hoping the story would live up to the darkness hinted at from the premise. This is only a few shots, but so far I’m encouraged.

Joo-won plays that doctor, and in these early shoots he’s depicted mid-chase scene alongside a gangster boss (Song Kyung-chul), who’s sporting a nasty wound in his abdomen. Reasons aren’t given for why the two men are on the run or why they end up on a bridge railing, but we do know that Joo-won will make friends (or at least allies) with shadowy types who hover on the fringes of the law (hence the need for medical treatment outside of the system). Perhaps this is one such case.

I’ve always generally liked Joo-won, but I find myself appreciating him more with every role; he certainly throws himself all-in and commits. And of all the many genres he’s tried his hand at, I do really enjoy him in the dark action role best. I was nervous when the drama switched out the God’s Gift—14 Days PD for a director with much lighter credits (PD Oh Jin-seok did Modern Farmer, Lovers in Paris, and Lovers in Prague) but these stills capture my interest, and I’m trusting that writer Jang Hyuk-rin of Reset will bring the darker edge.

Yong-pal held its script reading at the end of June, and below are some photos from that gathering of its principal cast, which also includes Kim Tae-hee as the heiress kept in a coma by her enemies, Jo Hyun-jae as a chaebol villain, Chae Jung-ahn as his wife, and Jung Woong-in as a surgeon with questionable ethics.

The drama will premiere on August 5 as SBS’s next Wednesday-Thursday series.

Yay yay yay looks like Good Doctor meets Cruel City. :D

Oh you meant 49 Days Jo Hyun Jae, not Punch Jo Hyun-jae. Hehe. I'm so confused, I saw a still of Punch Jo Hyun Jae earlier today in a suit in a new drama too...

But 49 Days JHJ is still cool. I haven't seen him in an evil role. I hope he and Jung Woong-in and Chae Jung-an give our leads hell. But, not too much hell, y'know? Just enough for me to be worried sick and then be glad when Joowon and Tae-hee win in the end.

49 Days = Jo Hyun Jae
Punch = Jo Jae Hyun

Similar enough to be confusing. :)

I, too, love Joo Won more when he plays dark, action roles. Hoping for a really awesome Yongpal this August! :)

I remember the reaction after the news of Kim Tae Hee's casting broke off and all I want to say that is I hope that it turns out to be good. We've been proved many times that not only actors make the drama (ekhem, Hyde, Jekyll, Me ekhem) so I have high expectations for this one.

Any one have any confirmed reports on Kim Mi-kyung (ahjumma on Healer) being on the show? She posted something on her Instagram a week ago that seems to be one of those blue scripts. Anyways, I hope this drama will deliver. It needs to help me get through the next two years without Joo Won.

That lady in the background of the last picture of Joo won looks like her. On the right, in glasses and a black shirt.

I don't find Joo won to be a sexy lead but I like his acting. Good enough. Kim Tae hee I don't find attractive either but that doesn't matter as well. I hope she's not as bad as everyone says. I think she hit the jackpot with the public about her looks because I fail to see it. Anyway, I will try this because I like Joo won. He usually pulls up good performances.

Supposedly, she made some great strides in her last drama, Jang Ok-jung, Living by Love.

I didn't see that drama, though, I did like her in My Princess. Of course, she was much better than her counterpart, SSH, who at least was moderately acceptable as the lead.

Anyways, I'm curious about this, because I like Joo Won, I do think she's really pretty, and I'm curious if she actually has gotten better.

So much Healer feel from those stills ( I need to watch this drama again), I'm crossing my fingers for this to be really good!!! But KTH character is in a coma ??

KTH's character was in a coma for 3 years but she became increasingly immune to the effects of the drug. I read this and more but I am unable to confirm if the source is accurate. Anyway, her character is not a damsel in distress. I had thought that she will just lie there waiting for her Prince to wake her with a kiss. However, it seems it is not like that at all.

Truth be told, as much as I love Joo Won, I haven't finished any of his dramas since Gaksital. I agree that he is so well-suited to these darker dramas, so I'm excited for this show! I love Gaksital, but I want Joo Won to not be synonymous with that character forever. He's too good!

I just finished re-watching Gaksital so I've been in a Joo-Won mood lately. So this is coming out at the perfect time.

He definitely is better in the darker character rolls because he is so INTENSE as an actor. It feels like the lighter rolls he has played recently has had him holding back as an actor.

Joo Won is one of my favorite actors though so I'm thrilled for this just because of Joo Won.

But somehow, I think he's also good in lighter ones. It's just his last project didn't work out well.

I shall be shallow. I'm gonna watch this simply because it's Joo Won!
He's really one of the most interesting actors nowadays since he dare to take up diversity of roles and really commit himself into all of them (yes I watched every drama he's in). Of course Gaksital will always be his best role and I can't wait to see him dark again.
He looks great with his new hairstyle too! so excited.

Yongpal pleaseeee be good! The premise is so interesting even before Joowon was cast so I hope the PD change and the writer won't disappoint!

I decided to trust Kim Taehee since I know she can be good. Is she going to romance Joowon? If so, please God spark some chemistry between them

Looking at the pics, Joo Won's character looks like Healer (a mysterious errand boy) in mission, right? Haha...He doesn't look like a doctor, but more like a secret agent! LOL

This is an unpopular opinion, I don't find Lee Jun Ki good in this drama. He is overacting in a melodramatic way. Does not help that Yoo Bi is overacting cute. Together it's jarring. If it's all out campy and cheesy, I won't like it but I can still go for the ride. As it is, I don't know what the show is trying to go for. I laughed when I think I shouldn't. Gwi is the only character that seems to fit in whatever genre this is meant to be.

I will prefer Lee Jun Ki in contemporary dramas like 14 days. Enough of saeguk for the moment, they all start to look the same. Unless it is more of a political, non-fantasy type written by a reputable writer.

There were a few photos of Joo Won with a much fuller face. Did he get fillers/fat/steroid side effects?
His face looks "normal" here but I got so distracted I spent two hours googling Joo Won + fat cheeks (sorry!!!)
