Yoo Ah-in takes up the sword in Six Flying Dragons

The first teaser is out for SBS’s historical drama Six Flying Dragons, and it looks pretty great—all cinematic and thudding with suspense. The drama feels exciting and epic, not like your father’s typical stuffy old sageuk (or fine, my father’s stuffy old sageuk—he likes ’em extra-boring and historically accurate), that’s for sure.

Six Flying Dragons begins in the waning years of the Goryeo dynasty, which was overthrown and supplanted by Joseon. General Lee (or Yi) Seong-gye founded the new nation, becoming its first king. His ambitious fifth son is our drama’s central character, Lee Bang-won (Yoo Ah-in), who engaged in bloody battles with his rivals to claim the crown and become Joseon’s third king, Taejong. (He was father to Sejong the Great, Joseon’s fourth king, who was the subject of this PD and writing team’s earlier drama, Tree With Deep Roots.)

So in the teaser below, we’re told that the Goryeo nation is in tumult, and a caption gives the order to kill and conquer Goryeo. Then, “a new era opens” and we get our first glimpse of Yoo Ah-in, who declares, “I am the new master of this nation.”

Kim Myung-min (A New Leaf) plays Jung Do-jeon, who aided the first king in establishing much of Joseon’s ideological foundations; he clashes with Lee Bang-won/Taejong and becomes his fierce political rival. Not that he’s the only foe, and the six dragons of the title refer to six important people; given that the dragon is a royal symbol and King Taejo had six sons, I’m going to go ahead and suppose those are our dragons.

Chun Ho-jin (Doctor Stranger) will play King Taejo, while Shin Se-kyung reteams with the Tree producers to play a pure-hearted young woman and love interest for Yoo Ah-in. Byun Yo-han (Ex-Girlfriend Club) and Yoon Kyun-sang (The Time I’ve Loved You) both play swordsmen, though in opposite camps; Byun will serve Kim Myung-min, while Yoon fights for Yoo Ah-in.

Six Flying Dragons will premiere on October 5, airing on SBS as a Monday-Tuesday drama.

Yoo Ah In is slaying Korea right now with his movie Veteran. It's already surpassed 9 million admissions and going to cross 10 millions. This drama got a lot of attention because of that too. So, SBS you'd better be good!

This won't even come close to Tears of the dragon. It's going to be a crowd pleaser and we are going to just ride with it.

0

@Kiara. I've never even seen Tears of the Dragon, but I've heard so much about it. I know, I'm a bad sageuk fan. I'm trying to become a better one! Unfortunately my Korean is still very basic, but I'm working on it so that someday I can see all the great sageuk without subs (which is most of them, sadly). I was so happy when someone put the entirety of Age of Warriors up on Youtube.

Anyway, yup, we have to take what we can get. Maybe it'll be more like TWDR, and less like some of her other stuff.

0

@juniper Tears of the dragon was back in the days where Historical dramas was about history. Our parents/grandparents' sageuk :).
Glad to hear Age of warriors is on Youtube.

We have the fairytale version for our generation and the source materials is rarely from the history books but from popular novels.
Mishil was based on a novel by Kim Byeol-ah. Tree with deep root was based on a novel of the same name written by Lee Jung-myung.

I'm not a good sageuk fan either. I'll watch anything sageuk related but I do appreciate writers like Jung. He is rare and original and he knows his history.

0

It's not going to be like Jeong Do Jeon but it will be entertaining with good ratings.

Yoo Ah-in and Kim Myung-min are the main draw here for me. I really like Jung Yumi after watching her in Maids. Looking forward to her performance here.

JB If we put it in a chronological order , Is Six flying dragons' era older or Empress ki's ?

0

Required fields are marked *

Empress Ki is a couple years older. Chunghye, whom Joo Jin Mo's character is based on, was Goryeo's 28th king.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Empress Ki was around during the twilight years of the Goryeo dynasty, from the mid 1300s to around 1370. Lee Bang-won will become Taejong, the second king of the Joseon dynasty, in about 1400, but he also played a critical role in his father's betrayal and usurpation of Goryeo's military dictatorship in the 1380s, as well as finally overthrowing the Goryeo line of kings in the 90s. If this drama limits itself to the war of succession after Taejo is proclaimed king, however, it will take place post-1392 (ie, post-Goryeo), a good 20 years after Empress Ki died, and a good 30 after her influence over Goryeo had waned.

Where does Faith fit into the timeline?

Required fields are marked *

Empress Ki is Ki Cheol's sister, but in the drama it was almost never mentioned (as long as I know). The drama only mentioned she's the daughter of Ki Jaho and then having romance with Wang Yoo (based on Chunghye)
But in the last episode (sometime around 1360) it's said Goryeo king slaughtered her brother. So EK gives order to Shimyang (Shenyang) King to rebel against Goryeo.

(Ignore historical inaccuracies, EK have so many of them, even WY and EK love story is fictional)

I haven't seen Empress Ki, but I looked Chunghye up just now and seriously, wtf O.o....as long as they decided to throw history out the window anyway, you'd think they could have shifted the timeline and picked a king that wasn't in the habit of abducting, raping and killing women.

It's just so weird hearing about another version of Gi Cheol, too, I have to say. I'll always think of him as that rat bastard in Shin Don.

0

Empress Ki is like Dae Jang Geum. They are mentioned maybe in 2 or 3 lines in the history book but we can make a 40-50 episodes drama about them lol. You are not going to get any history here girl :).

0

@Kiara. lol true enough. Every time I read about Empress Ki I get really weirded out because it overlaps with Shin Don. Jung Ha-yeon did such a great job interpreting historical events...while Empress Ki's writers sound just plain crazy.

0

@juniper I didn't watch it. Kim Hye-Ri was my Empress Ki and no one could've wrote her character better than Jung Ha-yeon.

0

It's based around the figure of Choi Young, right? Since Lee Min-ho is not in his 50s, I'm guessing it must take place early on during the reign of King Gongmin, so probably in the 1350s and 60s? That makes Lee Min-ho a little young for the role, but he was a little too pretty and beardless too, so.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Correct, Faith's timeline would be around 1350s-1360s. Gongmin was still in the Yuan court at the beginning of the drama. He was 20 or 21 when he left. I believe Gongmin, Noguk and Choi Young were still alive at the end so it never made it pass the 1370s.

I watched some but not all so my memory of the drama is pretty vague.

Empress Ki is during Goryeo dinasty, as EK was from Goryeo.. After EK and Toghon (Tahwan) died and Yuan was overthrown by Ming, Goryeo was having troubles and in the end succeeded by Joseon..

This drama will be based on the twilight of Goryeo's dinasty and the founding of Joseon's dynasty.

That's really impressive list!!

To add some more:
Secret Door - drama, about Yeongjo and his crown prince Sado
Sado/The Throne - movie (to be released), about Sado again but will be based on Memoirs of Lady Hyegyeong. Starred Yoo Ah In

Six Flying Dragons will be centered around the creation of Joseon dynasty.. That put this drama at the same time/period with The Great Seer (Ji Sung and Ji Jin Hee's drama) and Jung Do Jeon, just with different focus. SFD will focus more on Yi Bang Won and Jung Do Jeon.

lol, shin se kyung was Not good in Deep Rooted Tree...just average. Some people said she's bad in that drama...but she's not horrendous like Go sung Hee in Night Watch Man's Journal. GSH is so darn horrific. She is the worst actress in the history of Korean sageuk dramas.

0

I'd take SSK over GSH and JSY any day...Hate those 2 girls so much. Their "acting" is woefully incompetent and so bad to the bone. they can't act their way out of an empty barrel. keeping my fingers crossed SSK will be watchable in Six flying dragons. yoo ah in & kim myung min Fighting <3

0

maybe Shin se-kyung improved....ugh (rolls eyes) Go sung-hee's really terrible acting in TNWJ is such a horror to watch. between the 2, i'd rather watch SSK than GSH, who just cannot act to save her life. she's really awful and the most wooden actress i ever seen.

0

I wouldn't worry about SSK here because Kim Young Hyun knows her limitation. This is the 3rd time she's been casted in Kim's sageuks. If she end up sucking then blame the writer lol.

Lol People don't forgive shortcomings, it seems. I think Se Kyung is not a terrible actress. She's not a good one, but that doesn't make you automatically terrible (proof, there's a lot worse than her). She was average (and average does not ruin a show) in TWDR and QSD. FK and WAML were flops, but we can't really say it was all because of the actors, and she did quite well in comedy lately with IM and GWSS. Granted, this will not be a comedy, but I don't think she'll ruin anything. Plus, her character will be secondary at best.
