Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 21-27, 2015

Another week has passed, so let’s take a look at how well the shows did purely on the numbers front.

Let’s see… The Monday-Tuesday race remains steady with no major shakeups or changes. I expect the numbers will remain in this general ballpark through the end of Oh My Venus, which is followed by the youth fantasy action drama Murim School. (My feeling is that the rankings will stay in the same order then, too, but we’ll have to wait to see.)

The Wednesday-Thursday race seems to have settled into its ranking order, with legal thriller Remember—Son’s War inching upward from last week and solidifying its first-place status. The family-centric comedy Sweet Savage Family has been mostly overlooked and has slipped further behind; we’ll see how Jang Nara’s divorce-themed romance One More Happy Ending does as its replacement. Master of Trade—Inn 2015 still has a ways to go (it’s got 41 episodes total) so there’s some room for its numbers to shift with the entry of new competition (though I have a feeling it’ll hold steady as well).

And over on the weekends, Answer Me 1988 has paused its upward climb (for now), but that’s nothing to be worried about since its 16% ratings number is absolutely huge for tvN. Granted, it is in sort of a strange timeslot without the same kind of competition as most prime-time dramas, but considering that not all of the dramas in that timeslot have pulled in those numbers (JTBC has also programmed in the Friday-Saturday timeslot, and even KBS has flirted with the Friday-night dramas), it’s still a noteworthy achievement.

As for the Saturday-Sunday family dramas, no big surprises there (and the Sunday numbers will be updated shortly), so I’ll leave it at that for this week!

It's so great to see my favourite dramas doing well. Remember - Son's War and AM88 are my top 2 dramas right now. I'm going to join the 6FD bandwagon soon! I better watch it now when only half of the episodes have aired, otherwise 50 would be too overwhelming for meme to catch up!!

I'm mostly "Excited" for Kim Young Chul reprising his role as Bang-won/King Taejo (must watch for me). I hope Choi Myoung-Gil is available to play (Lady Min) Queen Won-Kyung again. If they bring Kim Kap-Soo that would be awesome too. I'll stop here because I'm getting greedy lol.

I am one of them. Well, my complain started from the ep 1 when it was cryingfest (and nonsense cruel acts). But I kept watching hoping they will show hero's journey to become the master of trade, but so far it was more about love triangle and some stupid revenge stuff. I don't know what the writer is thinking since actor/actresses are awesome. This is one of biggest disappointing shows this year for me (unless they clean up their acts for the rest of episodes).

I agree fan;Since it got extended to additional episodes and it's adapted from a 10 volume series many fans were hoping the remaining episodes would be about how he became the Master of Trade but the reason why the ratings are so bad is because the writers won't get off all the love triangles (they are ALL boring -no chemistry on any of them and the baby kidnapping thing-tiresome as well.)

The ratings won't get better until the writing gets better and more than likely after the New Year they may go down as well. Won't be the first time that happened on a show that got extended because the one to follow it wasn't ready.

I don't keep up with Saeguks (6fd is the only one that has been able to keep my interest) but I've sort of noticed that recent Saeguks have not had really high ratings. I think even these days, 40% would be a rarity but by have even come close. I think Reply's success is a combination of being quite well written and acted and appealing to a wide range of demographics by focusing more on the family than romance than its predecessors did. It's on another level but it's also the rare ratings juggernaut we see every other to few years nowadays

The last sageuk to hit national drama status was 3yrs ago. I think that 30% is attainable these days.

Maybe they need to do more sageuks that focus on women? Dae Jang Geum, Queen Seon Deok were pretty big hits. Empress Ki (last year) almost made it to the 30s (29.2%).

I loved NIF - I did a marathon watch of it over the holidays. I love Hu Ge but have totally gone for Wang Kai (Prince Jong) - I do wish the good guys had more set backs as things were too neatly set up for them.

I am currently watching "The Disguiser" which weirdly stars a lot of the same actors; this is a really awesome drama set in 1930s Shanghai. But it is weird going from seeing one actress playing a concubine and mother to Prince Jing and best friend of Hu Ge's character's mother to her playing Hu Ge's sister.

0

@ John

I'm on episode 4 of NoF and I am enjoying it very much :).

I'm a bit tired of Liu Shi Shi but looking forward to "The Imperial Doctress" nevertheless. Sad thing is I'll have Goryeo in the back of my mind while watching this.

Bear in mind the vastly different drama landscape between 2015 and when Queen Seon-deok was on. Dramas reaching in the 20s will now be considered breakout hots - SFD is doing well and it is a good drama with an excellent cast.

One of my Korean friends texted me to say that I should be watching 'I have a Lover' (I am fairly sure that's what she said as the text was in Korean). For her to randomly contact me about a drama she wants to recommend is a little bit unusual for her. It's figures are pretty dire for a weekend drama, and I haven't seen any people on DB commenting on it, but I am thinking I may give this some consideration. Wonder why it's doing so poorly in Korea.

Don't. You'll regret it, it's beyond awful. I checked it out because of the preview they showed at the end of TTWWNIL and couldn't even finish the 1st ep beacause of how ridiculous it is.

Point is, There's a reason it has poor ratings.

No drama appeals to everyone but how would you know that it's so awful when you didn't even finish the first episode??? I'm not saying IHAL is a masterpiece but Geum Wa Sol is more of a mess than IHAL but has typical weekend drama ratings so that argument is moot.

The difference is GWS is a typical weekend drama while IHAL tackles infidelity which turned many people off initially because it was portrayed quite boldly. Without a doubt, the first 10 episodes are hard to watch because it's a flashback to a marriage that has fallen apart and the husband cheating. Many who have stuck with it are riveted by it and and it encourages lots of (heated) discussion because like with makjang there can be difference of opinion and frustration. It is not amazing but I think it is very good and addicting for a 50 episode makjang drama.

Ah, Deb, I think I understand now why my friend is keen for me to watch it. She has studied in both the US and the UK and told me once that she felt so comfortable here because she didn't have to conform to anyone's expectations, either parents or society. Although she is proud of Korea and fiercely patriotic, sometimes she despairs at the role foisted on women. I would presume that she is thrilled to see a drama dealing with a controversial subject rather than being conservative in outlook. I have decided that I will watch it.

Agree with deb the first 10 episodes are hard to watch. The subject matter is hard to swallow, but the actors are wonderful, so give it a try see if you like it.

0

I also watching n enjoying GSW, but not as much as IHAL. I agree with what Ji Jin Hee said, that this drama is for adult, because the issues tackled are quite heavy. At the first instance, we thought this drama will only tackle issue on infidelity but later we discovered, that this drama has brought many other issues.

Dear, you should watch it.

I am in the opinion, its rating would not represent its quality. If, just saying, if this drama is in weekdays' slot, I think it will do well. This drama has been my favourite melodrama not only in 2015 but in recent years. While I agree, first 10 episode was hard to watch and I wanted to give up, but I am glad that I continue the journey until recent episode. This drama really playing with your emotion a lot.

I have been commenting a lot about IHAL here, on Open Thread. ;) Tbh, i have been haunted by this drama. Not only because the acting are awesome, but its plot and OST are perfect. I have been watching every episode at least twice, first without subs then again with subs.

After all, 50 hours is 50 hours. Or in this case a hundred hours. :-)

Maybe if IHAL had a kpop idol in their cast they would get better ratings. I'm glad they don't have one though. Watch it. Like everyone has said, the first 10 episodes are rough on the emotions. I can't say I'm an expert on Korean culture/values, but I can understand why the topic of infidelity can make IHAL an unpopular show there. I'm so glad to see many people commenting about IHAL on this thread. I'm all alone where I live lol. My friends have yet to understand my KD addiction. Anyway, just seeing the amount of discussion IHAL gets on the viki page and soompi should be indicative as to how good the show is. :)

Next week will be interesting as Cheese in the trap is entering the picture and i'm curious to see how its ratings will be esp since it has many buzz and if it may affect the big 3 cables (tho i doubtful since the audience that will watch CITT is certainly not the one who watch 6FD).

My favourite mon-thu is OMV. i've got no will to watch long saeguk or intense melodrama so OMV is perfect for me. short and sweet. i don't care about its ratings just like i didn't care for SGG. those who loves loves it.

I'm happy for remember since i catched up with the episodes last week and it's really good! YSH improving each episode and NGM and PSW sure kill their roles.

BTW..does anyone watch riders?? i really like it! it feels like a web indie drama. still need to catch up with the 2 last aired episodes. i love the bromance! it's really light and i recommend it to someone who looks for something nice and commiting since it airs only one episode a week.

OMV... what a waste of time! this rating is more than good for this strange creation.
The sad thing for me "more than the stupid good for nothing plot" is the main leads lack of chemistry. I had never imagined that SJS and SMA would feel this empty and flat in a drama together. I mean who would after their dazzling chemistry in that CF!
and the more they touch the more it shows!

Required fields are marked *

What? they sure have chemistry and may i say it's one of the best OTP i saw this year. i agree , the plot doesn't offer anything new and SJS and SMA rather save the drama but it's evident they are sizzling together, i didn't saw SJS so lively like that in master's sun (and i loved him with GHJ), here they are literally eating the screen ..

I have a technical question. Not being in Korea, I was wondering - do these stations work like terrestrial broadcast stations? ie. each station gets a designated number on the remote, and programmes play at set times?

I ask because in some countries, some channels are only available via the internet, which could then be swung onto a TV, just to make it more confusing.

Required fields are marked *

Having stayed in Korea numerous times I have encounted both terrestrial television and cable. The main channels seemed to be on the same number on the remote no matter which part of the country I travelled to, and I have been pretty much all over the country. To be honest, I couldn't see any difference at all between the system used in Korea and the system in the UK (where I live), except for language of course.

How i wish tvn has year end ceremony award, considering their strong drama line-up throughout the year.

When it comes to rating i do feel thankful for being international viewer, watching it online gives more flexibility in time. Totally understandable with the rising online viewership in Korean, especially for youngster (?).

I am curious though, for korean viewer if they watch drama online, should they pay? How about tvn drama which is cable in the first place?

OST 'Years' by Ryu: Some of his interview-
This song was in one of his album, but he newly put the lyrics to fit to the story per request from 'I have a lover' production team. He said he tried to express the feeling about this couple-Jin-un and Hae-gang's meeting and separation, re-union, regrets and love which got deeper, and to express Jin-un's mind loving his wife all over again. He said he wrote with the thought of forgiveness and love again.
He complemented the editor and music director about using this song in all the right places in the show, and said he was so excited that he couldn't fall asleep after watching these scenes.
