Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (May 4, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Lovely Runner: Still the highlight of my week. I was very relieved that the show only taunted us with hints of just-missed connection for a limited time before delivering the much-awaited reunion. Given too readily and without that build-up, it wouldn’t have felt quite as earned, but dragged out too long, it turns into a sadistic act of anti-fanservice. While it’s a little eye-rolly to depict a 34-year-old top pop/movie star being that innocent and awkward around the girl he likes, I enjoy Sun-jae’s utter lack of cool around Sol too much to look that gift horse in the mouth. As for that murderous plot turn, the prospect of a third-party evildoer did occur to me and I’m sure some fans saw it coming, but I think I would have preferred the initial version where Sun-jae falls victim to depression and Sol’s desperation to save him brings them together. That feels more intimate, meaningful. Maybe that plot has fewer twists and a more straightforward trajectory, but I would have been fine with just a character-based story of growth and connection. Not that I don’t think the story works now, since saving Sun-jae remains the goal, but I would have rather we got there without spending time on nefarious villains whose only purpose in the story is to be a plot device of evildoing.

Queen of Tears: Such… slow… going. My pesky sense of completionism is provoking me onward and I’m sort of mad about it, but for whatever reason I feel like I have to finish despite not really enjoying this anymore. I know where this is going and generally how it will end, but despite the appealing visuals and well-acted performances, this drama seems to be wallowing in its beauteous misery and I have no patience for that. Sometimes pain and poignancy can be lovely and thoughtfully portrayed, with tears that feel cathartic, so it’s not that I take issue with the premise. But when the end trajectory seems so obvious, all that time luxuriating in dramatic angst just feels overindulgent. Cut the fat and get to the point, please!

Doctor Slump: I wanted something breezy and easy to watch and the premise hinted at healing dramedy, and for the first six episodes or so it was delivering on my expectations. I liked exploring the existential crises of these two overachieving adults who’d never had a chance to slow down, only to find circumstances forcing them to screech to a halt and reevaluate their lives. I could relate to that sense of “what is it all for?” weariness, when a lot of dramas tend to focus on the go-getter culture of chasing career success. Ten episodes in, though, and the plot seems to be spinning its wheels a bit. And while I understand that arrested development is sort of the point of their characters, I tire a bit of watching grown adults behave like emotionally stunted teens. I do want them to grow… but maybe offscreen, and in fast-forward.

Lovely Runner: I love this drama sooooooo much I don’t even know what to say first or what I love the most. This week, in addition to that kiss (*TKO*), I’m just so impressed with the nerviness of the writing — to think they built the high school portion of the story so painstakingly, made me feel the ache of leaving it, and then got me 100% invested in the newly improved present day? So fast, and so seamlessly? Touché.

Lovely Runner: I’m running out of ways to say “I love this show so very, very much,” but that remains just as true this week as it has been all along. (Though, HOW is it already halfway over??) I CANNOT with these two and their mutual pining over what’s right in front of them, not to mention their adorably awkward commitment to try and play it cool in spite of themselves. And when they finally came out and admitted their feelings — and ACTED on them! — it was so deliciously satisfying even though I knew it couldn’t last. I may be in the minority on this, but I don’t mind the serial killer aspect at all, because for me it helps answer the “Why her? Why now?” questions regarding Sol’s time travel. When it seemed like she was just a random fan Sun-jae happened to have had a teenage crush on, there wasn’t a very strong reason she’d be the one sent back to save him, but it makes more sense (in my head, anyway) that it would be tied to a significant event in their shared past and the person responsible for that event returning to wreak more havoc. Likewise, seeing the full story of Sol’s accident in the original timeline helped put things into better perspective, especially Sun-jae’s part in it — it wasn’t technically his fault, but no wonder the guilt ate him alive! TL;DR: This week was a roller coaster and I never want to get off.

The Midnight Studio: I bawled my eyes out over Seo Ji-hoon’s episodes.

Chief Detective 1958: Park Jung-hyuk, the adorable little rattlesnake! It’s always exciting to see one of my favorite musical actors on screen, heh. I don’t think I’m all that invested in the overarching plot yet, and the comedy can be hit or miss for me, but I have to admit subduing a snake gang with actual snakes was hilariously apt. I feel like I need to turn off my brain and enjoy this ridiculously zany wild ride, haha!

Unit

Currently covering: The Atypical Family

Lovely Runner: This week had me all giddy, smiling at my screen and swooning at how utterly adorable Sun-jae is as a smitten puppy in love. That man is really a goner for Sol in all timelines. Sun-jae and Sol were cute together in high school, and I love that they’re still serving that cuteness — of course, sandwiched between tension and electricity — in their adult era. My highlight of the week is obviously the kiss(!), and it was absolutely hilarious to watch Sun-jae inevitably get “oppa-ed” when Sol bundled him out with a scarf over his face.
PS: I hope a certain drama can see the level of fan service that other dramas are giving their fans. No, I really hope that drama sees how normal people react when they finally address their miscommunications and get together after a period of separation.
PPS: That crazy cab dude needs to leave Sun-jae and Sol alone. Actually, all serial killers and psychopaths need to leave rom-coms. Period!

Frankly Speaking: I’m not a hundred percent sold on this yet, but I enjoyed watching Mr. Announcer struggle with his new unfiltered reality. I could do with less toilet and stinky socks humor though. By the way, having zero filter might seem like a curse to our announcer, but I know a specific couple who’d actually benefit from this blessing in disguise. But how else would we get 16 episodes of miscommunication and angst?

LIVE WATCHES
Frankly Speaking
More than happy to stay tuned in next week. I do sort of wish I could binge through to the end already--this isn't going to be a show about the intricacies of the story, as we can all pretty much predict how things are going to turn out. Instead, I believe it's going to hinge on the success of the humor when playing out each predictably awkward situation (not unlike Chicken Nugget, except less absurd). So far, so funny...toilet humor included.

Blood Free
There are no truly sympathetic characters in this drama. And yet, I gotta admit...I'll recommend it to others.

The Midnight Studio
I'm waiting until episode 16 comes out to watch 15 and 16 together as a mini-binge. I'm afraid I might need to skim-watch through to the end...I care more at this point about watching the interactions between our lead couple/remaining side couple than knowing how the "plot" focused on the curse and the camera ends up.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic
A delightful weekender! If QoT was a (poorly?) condensed weekender, then I might argue that so far, BMR is on track to be a way longer, (hopefully) more intricate sixteen-episode rom-com. Seriously, it's moving about as fast through plot points as a traditional drama. We've already had revealed a tremendous number of the central secrets and lies, and are on target to have the predicted downfall of the FL well before midpoint! Either this thing is going to run out of steam quickly, or the writer has a lot more in store for us. I very much hope the latter.

FROM THE RESERVES
On the Verge of Insanity
Truly one of the best, character-driven K-dramas I've ever seen. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who like stories about the relationships that can form between people, especially those focused on trust/distrust, betrayal and forgiveness...with a side helping of mutual respect and a soupçon of love. Also if you are, or love, an engineer, you MUST watch this show.

ON DECK
I've completed two of my April-May "airplane watches" (Wild Romance and OTVOI), leaving Crazy Love and The Spy Who Loved Me from my original list. After OTVOI, though, I can't find it in me to start either of these "lighter" rom-coms. I'm not in the mood. @amany filled the gap yesterday with a recommendation of Dinner Mate and I thank them kindly! Busted was the fifth on the list, and is funny so far, but I can tell it will be an ongoing time-filling, skim-watch, and I've just skipped ahead to Season 3 where I can not only tell they've hit their stride--but I think I've finally found the modality in which I think SUHO SHINES. He's darn funny in a variety show. Excellent news for all, but @zindigo, this begs the real question: how's he doing over there in Joseon?

Dinner Mate - first half was really good, the second half... well, depends how much you like the second leads. 😅

OMG yes. I've gone from having never seen Kim Nam-hee in anything before Chicken Nugget (and Third Dude was so totally my jam), to seeing him here and now looking forward to Bittersweet Hell mainly 'cause he's in it (doesn't look too good for his character though 😂).

Anyway, back to OTVOI, the last thirty seconds of this show ripped my freaking heart out and stomped on it. In a good way.

As for Dinner Mate I almost always love the second leads more than the first, and I gather that Lee Ji-hoon will be there and is going to either make it or break it for me. He's one of my faves--even in Grand Shining Hotel which I keep remembering when my mind is at rest like I've done something wrong with my life up to this point (@jenzy you too at all? Or are you free of it? This drama apparently haunts me...). Anywho, I've got an ff-finger and I'm ready to rock-and-roll.

This week will see the bulk of my airport/airplane time (close to 24 hours)...

Firstly, I had a good laugh when I noticed the picture that was chosen for this week's WWW 😀

I'm also glad/intrigued that BMR is still going strong. And I agree that FS might be better as a binge watch.

As for Suho... we haven't gotten to the "fun on the run" part of the story yet so I don't have any comment with regard to his Joseon comedic skills. When/if we finally get to see that, I'll put it in my weekly update 😉

I appreciated Busted even more after I recognized some of the cameos. Bless them for using their real names so I could google haha.

I watched Busted before I even heard of Running Man or X-Man so seeing the dynamics of Jae Seok with fellow variety veterans (Kwang Soo, Jong Min, & Seung Gi) was such a delight. Especially Jae Seok & Kwang Soo haha

One of my favorite moments is when Kwang Soo's walkie talkie wasn't working so he just yelled from a hill or something "JAE SEOK HYUNG! SEUNG GIAH!" causing folks to break around him haha

Oh another moment is when the members realized how competitive Suho was haha. He spent up Kwang Soo's money trying to win at the claw machine haha
Another moment was when zoned out on trying to solve a rubrix's cube haha. He spent hours on the cube haha

Oh my heart haha

@Britney anything with Lee Kwang-soo made me laugh the hardest, and then anytime the boys were freaked out by snakes and the girls calmly and efficiently completed the task for them 😂 I also liked the episodes with the other Detective team - including Ahn Bo-hyun!!!

The pacing of our weekender has been just right. Ten episodes in and now we have seen enough to understand why our 2ML would be legitimately angry at his manipulation at the hands of our FL's sociopathic mom- and would in fact react with the classic madness of a truly spurned lover. We needed all of those seven episodes which followed her childhood story arc in order to fully appreciate why his reaction is actually a normal one- but we did not need any more than those seven episodes. That much more careful sense of time and timing already distinctly distinguishes this weekender from the one that came before it. The fuller exploration of what will become our secondary couple is being timed for a later moment while the story arc of the friendship of Do-soon and Ma-ri has just barely begun and need not be rushed.

The writer of this weekender also wrote the hit weekender YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN- and seems to have learned lessons from that experience as the pacing of this story is actually even better than her previous work.

Required fields are marked *

I'm with you for sure on the pacing, but must say that I'm not sure I think Jin-dan's reaction to being spurned is "normal," per se...I mean, he's threatening Do-ra's whole career because he's not getting what he wants...and what he wants is not something he can demand! No, instead, I think it's deliciously over-the-top and I love it.

Required fields are marked *

When I said 'normal' I did not mean what the average person would do but rather a centuries old literary trope- and you should love it because it is quite literally a classic one that has stood the test of time. It is good because the spurned lover has a reason for his madness- as opposed to the twisted sociopathy of our Mistress from Hell in the just concluded QUEEN OF TEARS- where we never got even the slightest clue as to why she became or ever was that way.

I saw Kim Se Jeong in this before I saw her in anything else and she was so fun in it. I liked how during promotions, Jae Seok kept saying how she and Suho had gotten better at the quips & pace each season (actually he kept saying they got better at "talking") haha

Lovely Runner
This week was a real rollercoaster but mostly funny and sweet just as I like it. Please, please, please stay good I beg of you. I couldn’t bear it if this goes down hill in the second half.

Frankly speaking
The episodes seemed to fly by. I enjoyed it and can see that it will be my candy floss watch - no substance but nice at the time.

I love love love this drama. It has a really tight story of the staff and customers of a local hairdressers. It covers some deep subjects sensitively and yet manages to keep a lightness through some really laugh out loud funny moments. We are watching this as this month’s Watch and Discuss K-drama club drama.

Book club:
The comeback and The stand in both are written by Lily Chu and read by Philippa Soo. What a joy to listen to a stage actor, she brought the story to life in a different way to other voice actors I have listened to recently. They were both free on Audible (guess who used up her credits 6 months early, again😞) They read like they could easily become a made for tv rom com film, especially the fun elements of the story and the ridiculous decision making in the last few chapters. My knowledge of Korean fan culture really helped me to understand the storyline of The Comeback in a way I don’t think I could have if I hadn’t seen so many K-dramas about the idol lifestyle.

COMPLETED
Queen of Tears - I decided to binge rewatch the entire show before the finale and I'm quite glad I did. I think if I hadn't, I might have upturned a few tables at the turns the plot took towards the end. But instead I just revelled in the full emotional beats of the story, complete with multiple bouts of crying resulting in a massive headache 😭. To me this was a story about two people (and two families) learning to (re)love each other and I'm sure I'll look back on it and rewatch it fondly in the future. Have to specially praise the perfection the leads brought to the story 💖.

ONGOING
The Midnight Studio - I didn't like how they ended the cop and uncle's stories. Made no sense and I don't feel like there was any real closure for anyone in either situation. At least the OTP are still going strong.

Lovely Runner - My cheeks hurt from the amount of smiling I did in these episodes. I love that Sun-jae is still so head-over-heels. Not worried about the way it ended - the return to the past one more time was needed to truly course-correct I think.

Blood Free/ Dominant Species - RIP Ho-seung 😔. Ja-yu putting herself on the line to prove the technology was almost an eventuality. Loved the back-and-forth between the two press conferences. The torture scenes were also intense oof. Really looking forward to the finale next week.

Chief Inspector 1958 - Ep. 4 was hard to watch and quite a bit of a tonal whiplash after the madcap car chase of Ep. 3. The story is inevitably becoming darker because of the time period in which it's set but I hope it won't lose its humour even when things get tough.

STARTED
Frankly Speaking - The humour really didn't work for me. Go Kyung-pyo is working hard though so I'll give it another week.

C-DRAMAS
Completed There's a Lover in My Hometown/ Will Love in Spring - I don't know if 'lovely' is an accurate description of a show dealing with such heavy themes but it really is a lovely little show. Eps. 16 and 17 were so beautifully written and shot. I also really liked the letter Grandma Lin wrote. The ending was wholesome too - Jisan Goose!

Started Young Babylon and almost dropped it in the first episode because the second-hand embarrassment was killing me but it's proving to be deeper and more interesting than I expected. I thought it'd be a 'youth in the 90s' story but under the cover of a youthful romance, it's more of a study of the socio-cultural and gender divides in 90s China.

Ha true that. I think they addressed it a bit in the finale where she talked about how the way she talks and deals with situations comes across as facetious to him. So even when she's sincere, she's unable to transmit that sincerity. Good for her that she found someone so tolerant lol.

2

Am I the only one who dropped the drama the moment he pushed her against a wall and forced a kiss? She was seriously fighting him. And he actually did it twice. I won't tolerate this stuff anymore. In that moment he lost all his charm for me. It's a pity because I was loving the drama.

Consent is a very important matter for me. I see many would consider the kiss okay since she kisses him back after a bit of struggle. But this happens twice. The first time she got free by biting his lip, the second time she just gave in into the kiss and reciprocated it.
But for me it gives the wrong message that when a woman is saying no, probably she doesn't really mean it.
We know from the story that they are in love, but it doesn't make it right anyway.

2

I think that scene is meant to illustrate some of his preconceived notions about her. My memory's hazy but I feel like they also talk about the forced kiss later? Casually and in passing, not in a substantive or deep way, but that's the nature of most of their conversations early on.

Definitely fair to draw your own line on it though if it makes you uncomfortable.

@Lalla32 For me, they had a great relationship. They needed to share their insecurities emotionnal and physical. We don't often see this kind of relationship in dramas. But it's true they were pretty physical in their way to communicate too but it didn't bother me so much because they weren't hurt by that but by their words.

3

I did exactly the same thing at that exact time! I wish I could unsee it, it was awful. I hate it when they romanticize sexual assault in movies and tv shows. Despicable!
I cannot trust the writer/director to tell something good after allowing such a scene.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I'm totally with you. I tolerate a lot of crazy stuff in my dramas, but not this.

1

The huge difference in this drama is, that the first forced kiss was actually initiated by the Heroine (in the train, ep 5). The Heroine also generally sends mixed signals and pushes the buttons of the Hero. And as @kurama says, they were both sometimes quite physical in their communication. This is a journey of an adult mature relationship. They both made mistakes and hurt each other, they both apologised, they both learnt to know each other better and understand each other better. And I loved how they treated her handicap.

That said, you have absolute right to drop the drama if it makes you feel in any way uncomfortable.

Sorry, but it's not a matter of personal sensitivity. You know, that could be considered sexual assault. A guy that forces himself on a girl because he is jealous and frustrated, has real problems. I wouldn't want to have anything to do with him.

Carry Sun-jae and Run: 🏃‍♂️‍➡️❤️ I love that she got to say "I protected myself." The return to the present wasn't as painful as I thought, and I'm still loving it and squeeing with all my might (EEGAD the KISS🫠)!! Byeon Woo-seok is excellent. Adult Sun-jae is still like high school Sun-jae: a little bit prickly on the outside, he tries to play it cool, but he's truly a melty lil' marshmallow who gets giddy being around Im-sol. It's like My Perfect Stranger × Extra-Ordinary You + a smidgen of Her Private Life. But good grief, the cliffhangers on this are no joke.

Frankly Speaking 👨‍💼🔊 Frankly, it's fun AND funny!! I laughed so much! Go Kyung-pyo is HILARIOUS as an upright, uptight, stuffed shirt announcer, and Kang Han-na is delightful as a fast-talking writer with a Girl-Friday patter who rolls with the punches (our ML, poor dear, does not 😂). The utter chaos of that opening newscast, the dressing-down of the entitled pop star, and Aespa's "Next Level" singalong were all delicious. Fun fun fun!!!

Unlock My Boss 🙍‍♂️📲 (1-12) Do I have a long list of dramas I'm currently watching? Yes. Did I choose to watch this for the 3rd time anyway? Also yes. "Hopeful," you may ask, "why are you obsessed with this drama?" That's a good question, dear Bean! I think it's a combination of focusing on a tight cast of characters; themes of what sets humans apart from AI that are more timely now than when it was released a year ago; a ML who is kind, principled, and listens; a FL who seizes agency and the steering wheel; a bodyguard who gets a beautiful story of reflection and growth; symbolism and metaphors related to both Snow White and Beauty and the Beast (apples and mirrors; temptation, reflection, illusion; the transformative power of kindness); In-seong's lovely family and their support of the FL; flashbacks to both Min-ah and the FL's respective moms; tight plot and assured pace; a great background OST that helps propel the action (*the track "Nobody is Perfect" is a banger!*); and an ending that is both realistic and hopeful. "I have another dream" 🥹❤️ It's the perfect rewatch for me!

Lovely Runner name a better duo than me and doing something I’d resolutely said I wasn’t going to do. I got a bit too curious after watching edits and ended up watching episode 8 in its entirety. So I guess we’ll be continuing this here nor there strategy (I tell myself that having one foot out is how I protect myself from possible heartbreak but we all know I’ll be gutted all the same in the end if the plot takes a nosedive).

Midnight Studio the preview for the next - and last episode - is giving me slight Tail of the Nine Tailed vibes. Is that just me??? A solidly enjoyable show though, I’m not like in love with it but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching it all the same.

Destined ahh the leads are the best!! Honestly the other subplots are being carried by how much of a fan I am of the ML and FL together. They’re a partnership in every sense of the word and I love that they’ve had each other’s backs from so early on (I’m halfway through now). The slowburn is being complemented by their very natural individual growth arcs and the fact that you can tell they’re falling more and more in love with each other - even if that’s not been acknowledged with words just yet.

New Life Beings conversely here, while the leads are sweet (especially the ML!), I’m enjoying the wider plot-line and all the supporting characters the most here. This show is the lil spot of sunshine in my current drama roster, which seems to be inadvertently following the theme of ‘ANGST’ lol

Just started Will Love In Spring with high hopes after all the glowing beanie reviews ✨

Keen to check out Atypical Family too when it drops tomorrow!

Live Watches
The Midnight Studio: Holding off on watching this week’s episodes until the finale airs this week. Excited to finish and get closure or a HEA for everyone!

Queen of Tears: There were times when I needed to check to make sure I wasn’t watching the episode of CLOY where Jeong-hyeok goes to rescue Se-ri from the villa about half a minute after he’s taken a bullet for her - complete with snow! But watching our OTP fall in love again was so cute, I mostly forgot the parts that were annoying. Eun-sh!t-for-brains turned out to be a pretty textbook example of an abusive partner, and I wish we’d gotten to see more of Beom-ja’s adorable romance, but on the whole I enjoyed the watch so much, and I’ll remember it fondly.

Older Dramas
Marry My Husband: (through episode 8) So much fun! Na In-woo’s eyebrows should be getting their own paycheck, and the revenge is so satisfying to watch. I’m loving the moments of introspection when Ji-won is unsure of herself and mourning the loss of the two most important relationships in her life - it’s nice that the drama is continually differentiating her from those who took advantage of her. I love that both our leads got a makeover scene - I’m such a sucker for a slow walk entrance!

Our Blooming Youth: I loved it all over again. The lack of easy answers, the hard conversations, the merciful forgiveness, the dreamy romance, the amazing friendships. Part of me still wishes we got to see more of our characters at the end - more of them thriving and doing what they do best. But probably my imagination is better anyway.

Queen of Tears - Well the buzz was worth it.
Can we have a decline of chaste married couples on screen? Reflection of You had steamy scenes that you expect from married couples. What makes it stand out is I didn't expect to find Go Hyun-jung in steamy scenes. Same with the husband costar Choi Won-young. This one didn't. QoT simply didn't nail the sexy part of being married.

Daddy Hong retiring from corporate is very very accurate.

Blood Free - Jayu's recollection of the conversation she had with her bodyguards was very touching and a favorite highlight of this week.
I liked the Jayu vs Jae showdown via media broadcast.

Frankly Speaking - I didn't exactly enjoy episode 1 until the moments post - electric shock.

Missing Crown Prince - Not bad. I'm not yet so into it but I somehow didn't dislike the first episode.. I intend to get into episode 2 today.

Queen of Tears (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D / D / D+ / D / D / D
Both Kwak Dong Yeon and Park Sung Hoon can play a himbo and bastard in their sleep respectively: it’s a frustrating watch seeing them gain 0 meaningful acting experience through this project despite the money and exposure. It does feel like there was zero consideration towards the cast and it’s sad how the high ratings will send the wrong message.

Hide (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D / D / D- / D-
Comparing this show to Oh! Young-shim, it’s surprisingly hard judging which was the worse project for Lee Min Jae: his character in both shows was solely to support the FL and there was negligible development. Unfortunately, his next project is Weak Hero Class 2 which doesn’t interest me one bit with the story, so it’ll be quite the waiting time.

Lovely Runner (Episode 7-8) - Mood: C-
Yeah, this week’s cliffhanger demonstrates exactly why you don’t want a serial killer arc: your story essentially becomes an irritating drag of the romantic tension between the OTP interspersed with convenient moments of thriller crap. Sure the kiss is great, but it would’ve been nice to develop the other leads instead of making them a plot device or even worse, a cameo.
Frankly Speaking (Episode 1-2) - Mood: D+
I don’t know, I love the leads but the humour isn’t landing for me, not to mention a 2ML who has history with both leads and appears to be there only because there’s going to be a love triangle down the road. The issue with superficial comedy is an extremely simple one: you can’t keep it going for 12 episodes. Even if we ignore the lame setup, things will get tired so fast?

The Midnight Studio (Episode 14-15) - Mood: D
Lol, it took the show 15 episodes to finally start talking about the fantasy element in the room after a sudden conclusion for the evil spirit whose motivations were simply explained away as greed (wonderful, brilliant). And if the show didn’t have the break in the scheduling during the 1st half, we would’ve seen the angel of death only during the first episode and the finale.

Dr. Slump
I was not in the right mood to finish Queen of Tears and finished Slump instead. This show was so strangely uneven, with parts I loved and then with parts I liked (much) less. I will fondly remember it for Haneul (dorky, heartbroken, depressive, picking herself up... and this was for me the best I have seen from Park Shinhye so far), Mom and Uncle noodles... and I teared when the proposal was about being part of Haneul's family. Even annoying Bada grew on me and it was nice to see him loosing his inferiority complex (and hearing Mom's story about Bada's name, how he was special from the beginning). There was also Yoon Park. 🙂

Kiss with Sunjae
Ooooh, Byeon Wooseok is such a delight to watch 😍 regardless if he plays an innocent flustered teenager or an adult entertainer emitting (so much of!) smexiness. I also enjoy his comedy timing and what a dedication with that falling into the fountain! 😄
The kiss was hot and I loved all the eye-kissing, but I also have to admit that for me Sol's transition from fan-love to romantic-love was a bit fast. I would also like to have more from other characters... and a bit more depth. 😅

Go Kyungpyo without a filter
So far it is mainly Go Kyungpyo's show, but I enjoy his performance very much and he can make even the Korean toilet somehow graceful. 😆😆
What surprisingly elevated the show for me was that trippy family dream scene when Kibaek faints at the awards ceremony. What a suppressed subconscious. I think if handled well, this can be an interesting journey of Kibaek to find himself and his true happiness.

Will Love in Spring
While I was slurping the first half and waited impatiently for new episodes, I now slowed down a bit and I'm giving it some space. Episode 15 was painful, but so real. And although I could understand all the insecurities of our Heroine, I was glad our Male Lead was able to say stop, I can't go like this. Thanks to their friends and family they got another chance to talk and be open... and to listen to each other. And this time they managed. The second leads also finally managed to connect and they are generally a joy to watch... and I have to admit I teared together with our Heroine when her Bestie announced her engagement. What I also noticed, both male leads are very very kind.

Webtoon corner
My Lucky Strike had a very satisfying season finale.

Last Week Tonight: 9.5 Who needs to binge kdramas when HBO just freed the whole first season on Youtube? Hint: John Oliver's content & style have aged better over the last 10 years than his hair :)
#lastdecadetonight

Chief Detective 1958: 7.0

Queen of Tears: 7.0 We won't have Eun-slime/scum/snake/sleeze to kick around any more, but those of us who were disappointed can start working on nicknames for Park Ji-eun-xxxxx. At times the "Tears" were viewers' bitter tears of blood and the "Queen" was the writer.
If we're going to have 2 bonus episodes later, will they explain things like why Evil Girlfriend targeted the Hongs?

Missing Crown Prince: 7.5

Lovely Runner: 7.6 Tip of the Day:
1: When a kidnapper ties you up but you free yourself with a box cutter, take it with you when you run away. If you don't need it right away when he chases you, you might need it 15 years later.
2: Hold on to your phone!
3: Buy a damn case and screen protector!!!! I don't care how much PPL money Samsung offers you to show it in all its unprotected glory.

Midnight Photo Studio: 6.5

Blood Free: 7.5

Frankly Speaking: 9.0 :) As @attiton says, this show is flipping made of gifs.

Seriously, go watch John Oliver. I think it's available internationally.

Here are some additional Lovely Runner tips or thoughts:

1. If your crush falls asleep on the bus and misses her stop, do not just watch her sleep as she gets farther and farther from her intended destination, especially at night when buses run less frequently. There is no way out of such a situation that would not be massively inconvenient for both of you. I found this frustrating to watch as a regular transit user.

2. If you kidnap somebody, don't leave your keys and a box cutter behind in the car where you left your victim.

3. If a car is chasing you, do not run on the open road. Run on uneven terrain or anywhere inaccessible by car with obstacles (e.g., trees, signs, etc.) between you and the oncoming vehicle.

4. If you plan to run a person over, get on with it. Don't slow down or wait until you reach a more populated area. Mow down your witness, too. Don't make eye contact and wait for him to rescue your victim before you attack him.

5. If you are filming such a scene, do not film it in slow motion. It looks ridiculous when the victim turns to stare dumbly at the oncoming vehicle before magically flying into the air (as if suspended by wires) and landing in a bottomless pool of water.

6. If you wake up in your original body after time traveling and you have no memory of the previous fifteen years after you altered the past, maybe take some time off to figure out what's happened so you don't jeopardize your current job, relationships, etc. Also, ask questions about what happened during that time, especially regarding life/relationship-changing accidents. Wonder about the person you replaced who has those memories (and who is not really you anymore, since you no longer share the same experiences).

7. If you are mistaken for a stalker who bumps into you while she is fleeing from the police, clearly explain what happened and seek evidence to prove your case. Don't sign a restraining order that incorrectly assumes you are the stalker.

8. If you just regained your ability to walk, do not wear stiletto heels to work, especially if you have a history of falling down a lot and your office apparently has no elevator (unless you're a masochist).

9. If your current employer is the same one that rejected you when you were in a wheelchair, be a little less enthusiastic about working there or consider how you could change your office to be more accommodating.

10. If your best friend calls you at work with an emergency, call someone else to help her or tell your boss about the situation. Do not just run off in the middle of a scheduled meeting without telling anyone.

11. If the girl you like rejects you because of a traumatic experience you shared, accept that and move on. Do not pine over her for 15 years. It's not romantic; it's unhealthy. If you're a friend of someone who does this, encourage them to move on, but do not badmouth the girl for rejecting him. She's not responsible...

12. If you find yourself frequently in time traveling situations and you need some essential facts to know who, when and what you are, don't interrupt people who are talking to you!!! Listen. It could be helpful.

HIDE (Ep. 11-12) The series' sledgehammer theme was that you cannot trust anyone; that anyone is a disposal asset; and that family members can be the worst offenders. Betrayal was the show's oxygen.

The series was like a roller coaster ride of twists and turns, turning average people into minor superhero characterizations. The last episode was a rushed explanation of all the events. Pros: Pure entertainment. Good escapism. Cons: Almost too much plot to handle. FL had a lot of personal baggage and strikes against her to have a happy ending.

SPIRITED AWAY (Movie) I went to the movie theater to watch my favorite film. I surprised that the Sunday matinee had 28 people in attendance, the most I’ve seen since the pandemic. The audience was very mixed in race and age which shows the power of entertainment crossing cultural boundaries.

JOURNEYS: JAPAN’S IRON ROAD (NHK): A micro-documentary/travel show to Western Japan region known for its steel making history. It showed the ancient art of making prized Japanese swords. The technique was to blend soft iron in the middle of the blade surrounded by harder iron to give it strength and flexibility. But the technique of making such swords is slowly getting lost since it is dying art form and no young people want to learn from the remaining master craftsmen. It was a nice show to find by accident after Shogun series.

LOVELY RUNNER (Ep. 7-8)
Still my favourite watch of the week! I’m working on the assumption that any changes/choices Sol makes, opens a new timeline. For example, we make many choices in life, and every choice we make or don’t make, results in one of many potential alternate timelines, futures, and possibilities. So for me Sol is jumping between timelines, when she was thrust into the “present” in these current episodes, her lack of memories is quite telling in that she doesn’t belong in this particular alternate future. Ultimately, I think with all this back and forth time-travelling, Sol will probably end up in her OG timeline, since her main motivation is the save Sun-jae

FRANKLY SPEAKING (Ep. 1-2)
Fun, over-the-top and my kinda humour. I’m curious how our ML’s truthfulness on and off switch works and I’m actually glad our FL has already caught onto things

CHEIF DETECTIVE 1958 (Ep.3)
I like the heist(ish) vibe of the show, and also appreciate the politics, especially with pointing out the blatant corruption amongst the police. Instead of protecting the people, they are sent to harm the very people they’re supposed to protect, for example harassing the homeless and the vulnerable

Lovely Runner: I want Tae Seong back. Make him part of the band!
Boys Be Brave: "brave" wouldn't be the word I would use to describe any of these boys.
Frankly Speaking: Go Kyung Pyo is killing it! He's hilarious. Love him.
And, uri Licia acts?? Seeing Patricia here felt as random as the final cameos in QoT. I'm not complaining tho, just shocked.
PS. for a second the ending of episode 2 made me wish this was a body swap drama. LOL I miss that trope.
LTNS: Loved this. I wouldn't mind another 10 episodes of it. And I LOVED Esom in it. This writer+Esom = YES.
Weak Hero Class 1: kdramaland kids are scary af.
PS. Choi Hyun Wook playing himself is always the best part of his shows.

BONUS
At 25:00 in Akasaka (jdrama): the main character goes from 1 to 100 out of nowhere, he's scaring me.
Sonny Boy EP9 (animation): So far, 9 episodes of people telling the ML how wrong he's been living his life.
Usury Academy (movie): all over the place.
Joseé (movie): I liked their chemistry. Maybe I'll try The Light in Your Eyes next.
My Sibling's Romance (reality show): I think the show is stuck in "my sibling". No romance here.

Mask :
I quite enjoyed this but towards the end it got a bit tedious.

Queen of tears : phew. It’s over and I got my bean.

Parasyte - The grey : I quite liked it. Even with just 6 episodes it made the emotional connection with characters.

Best Choice Ever (cdrama) : it is a family drama through and through. Even though the mother was shown to make an effort to change and be a better person, the amount of time spent on her was too much. I didn’t like how the family were enablers till the end. She was selfish and her family kept catering to her needs till the end. I wish the show spent more time with the OTP. I loved them. they were calm, mature and really worked well together. Xu Kai needs to do more modern drama if he wants to keep his hair line 😂

Ongoing

Frankly Speaking : I quite enjoyed the premier episodes.
A lot of laugh out moments. The bird sound poem!!

Blood Free : The lead actors are carrying this show. I liked all the scenes with the prime minister.

Lovely Runner : BWS is too cute!!

Nothing uncovered : almost there. I think the show did a good job with the investigation and the reveals so far. Now, how is the detective going to make this all work in the legal system with evidences?

Will love in spring (cdrama) : Upto ep 15. I am starting to see how complex the FL’s character is. As much as she puts up a front of being a happy person, we now start to see the cracks of her facade. The almost love making scene and her reaction to it was hard to watch. I felt for both the characters.

Hi Beanies! One more week in my favorite section of this site.

What I have been watching:

_ Lovely Runner (8/16). I guess that something has not clicked with me yet, because I rarely think of this show when I'm not watching the episodes, and I can't feel the chemistry that makes my heart flutter. But what's sure is this drama makes me laugh, and that's good enough :)

_ Gu Family Book (10/24). From the eternal "plan to watch list", I have started this 2013 fantasy sageuk. Even if I had not known it came from the same screenwriter than King of Baking (2010), I would have guessed it. There are so many similarities among the two dramas! I could talk about a few of them, but that would be spoilery.

_ Minidrama Under the Gun (6/6). A drama which can be finished in less than three hours. A very "slice of life" and nice story. I liked the main couple, their great chemistry, the three songs in the OST... And I earned a bean.

_ C-drama Joy of Life (episodes 3 and 4). I have re-started it after several months. And now I am determined to finish it. Episodes 3 and 4 are so funny!

Western show:

_ The Three Bodies (Netflix) (6/8). I know the c-drama is better, but this adaptation is interesting and well done. The pace is faster, obviously.

Like you this week Isa I really enjoyed the six epsode mini series Zuho’s UNDER THE GUN (Viki US). I could never find out who produced UTG. I saw somewhere that it was a ‘Viu Original’. Also this is my introduction to Zuho (and you are so right Isa about the Zuho-Lee Joon-gi resemblance). Uncanny. (Lol, Zuho at 27 is probably too old to be a LJG (at 42) love child, but then again…)
It is in a way a high school drama (our 2 leads) revolving around the world of poker. Unusual setting to say the least.
6 twenty-two (ish) minute episodes so things move fast including the sweet little romance.
Will I be rewarded a bean for this? Great. I will be getting a bean for QOT which was the equivalent of around 24 one hour episodes.

UTG follow up. The content ratings on this drama imo are a bit too harsh. Viki rates it with an ‘R’ and MDL rates it with ‘18+ Restricted (violence and profanity)’.
Trigger warnings: In this drama there is gambling, smoking, drinking, some fighting (not particularly memorable to me because I can’t remember them already). We are in the world of poker clubs after all.
I personally would have rated it ‘15’. The average Korean teenager probably would not be shocked by anything there.

The Midnight Studio I think the Uncle deserved a better arc.

Nothing Uncovered Leave this family!

Lovely Runner I love the couple, they're the cutest! I don't like the killer arc, I would prefer that a simple car accident and depression...

Frankly Speaking I couldn't help to think he wasn't Hwa-Shin... But overall, I would have prefered they let us know a little bit more the ML before.

Chief Detective 1958 I didn't watch the episode 5 yet.

Blood Free I wished the story explored all + and - of the meat instead to go further with the organs and super strength...

Begins Youth It's nice to see so many familiar faces like the singer from My Dearest, Seo Ji-Hoon, Seo Young-Joo (he was so good in Solomon's Perjury and Girls' Generation 1979), Ahn Ji-Ho from Nobody Knows. But their stories are a little bit too much, each of them is suffering 😅

Will Love in Spring (cdrama)The episode 17 was definitely my favorite! In general, it was a great show! The end could have been written a little bit better but it was fun to see her family to stay in contact with him 😄 I loved the actors in their role! I loved each relationship, friendship, family and of course the love ones!

Queen of Tears The couple was the best part.

Hide The story was quite meh but the actors were good.

The Midnight Studio: There is FAR and AWAY too much happening in this drama for 16 episodes. The writer should have paced this differently. Going into the 16th episode, there is too much that needs to be resolved. Also, Nam Gu mistreated his wife even in death. All he had to do was be there and he couldn’t even do that, but now he is gone, smh. Also my girl Ji Won deserves better than to be dating a dead person, her entire storyline is shenanigans, from the the terrible boss to her “boyfriend.”

Lovely Runner: The best part was that top tier kiss. I felt that in my bones, so I appreciate the actors, but I would really like the writer to pace better.

Blood Free: Woof, so much happening. I really hope the writer doesn’t pull a grid and actually resolves this story; however, she decides to do it. (I remember Grid) I am going to assume there will be some more deaths, who? I am not sure.

Frankly Speaking: It was fine. I like the actors, the comedy is meh for me and the story is just okay so far, but I will continue on to watch it.

Chief Detective: AWWWW Sungchil. I am glad they got justice for him. I really love this case of the week format; it really works for the show. Also, the maknae heartbroken that his boss ended up with his crush is hilarious. His poor face as they got engaged and married.

The atypical Family: I look forward to this!!!

I am celebrating the start of an actual comedy with FRANKLY SPEAKING. The first two episodes were a bit uneven but did have some genuinely funny moments. It is so good to see Kang Hanna on the screen again after Disney made sure that I would not see her in BLOODY HEART (Does that sound bitter?).

My wife and I are finally watching SHOGUN. We are now past the half-way point and I can only say that it is at least as good as everyone has said that it was.

She also watched the excellent ‘historical’ Chinese Costume Drama BLOSSOMS IN ADVERSITY and also HARD TO FIND, keeping up with each new episode as it came out.

Viki has also posted the classic HONG GIL-DONG: THE HERO and that show has also had my wife staying up late.

The new weekender BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC is moving along smartly. Will ratings pick up now that QUEEN OF TEARS has ended? Good question- as QoT ended I realized that what I had seen was a half-length version of a weekender- and that much of what seemed to be missing from QoT represented the things which had been stripped out to reduce the show to officially sixteen (but in terms of total runtime really twenty-four) episodes.

While it aired QUEEN OF TEARS was my favorite show and I still think well of it but like many others felt that some things were missing. The same writer has actually written even better shows: CRASH LANDING ON YOU, THE LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA and MY LOVE FROM THE STAR are some of the very best K-dramas that you will ever see. QoT was a very good show but to me did not quite match those three in total quality. Park Ji-eun is a great writer but perhaps it is a bit unfair to expect that she always clear the bar that she has set for herself with her past work. That being said, I look forward to her next show.

I have also continued my watch of the excellent 2017 Weekender MY GOLDEN LIFE. It is well written and the FL is played by my favorite actress, Shin Hye-sun.

Note: The new season of BRIDGERTON is coming soon, on May 16. The new season of OUTLANDER is already here. Both are on Netflix.

It's weird. 8 episodes are not a lot for a season but they chose to split it? I don't think it's a good idea. People tend to get tired by seasons, so if they split them, it will make it worse.

3

I guess the main or only reason is they don't want people to pay a suscription for just one month to watch the full season in a row 🤔

2

Sorry Isa, idk how to tag you, but that is the exact reason they are doing it. They want people to have the subscription for 2 months and because a lot of people have fomo, they anticipate they will watch the first 4 episodes instead of waiting until June to watch all 8. @kurama, it is frustrating because a weekly drop will have the same affect as above, but they want to be annoying.

May-hem is here!!! 🥳

Started FRANKLY SPEAKING, which is a lot of fun! Humor and comedy mostly works for me. FL and her colleagues are a riot, so is our jinxed ML in all his glory of comical ummm… agitation? 😂 (His inner focus on those song lyrics while his boss was talking him down was priceless. „I’m listening!!!“ Thoughtfully rude, LOL!) I hope this stays as good, but we’ll have to wait and see!

Continued MIDNIGHT STUDIO, which I’m right now watching for the romance TBH. Will surely finish for our sweet main couple. 🫰

Started MILITARY PROSECUTOR DOBERMAN, because it features ABH, became available in my region, and nobody stopped me. The best thing about it - next to our leads 🔥🔥🔥 (taking a moment to appreciate that hand instead of wrist grab 👏🫰🤝)- is the mullet and overall style of that gang leader. 👀 Watching while fast forwarding heavily, I have to admit. But love the cast!

Still watching c-drama WILL LOVE IN SPRING, which continues to be beautiful.

Looking forward to start more dramas this month! 🫰👏🥳

LOL! The “inner aespa” - so haunting 😂 How their marketing team managed to position that song so prominently in not one but two current shows is truly amazing. It wasn’t “merely” background music in both cases, either! Very well done.

I finished Doberman recently, I came for ABH too, and discovered Jo Boah. I think the show got better in the late episodes. Now whenever I think of the scene when Do Baeman came unexpected while his aunt was waiting to have dinner with his boss, I still laugh out loud 🤣 The three of them are so cute!!

If one day I'll start "Destined With You", it would be because of Jo Boah.

I really like Jo Boa in this drama as well! She is definitely no Hongjo here. In fact, quite the opposite 😂 (I wouldn’t be worried if Cha Wooin went into a forest alone to search for a criminal. 👀👏🔥)

Also, her chemistry with ABH is sizzling. For whatever reason, because it’s definitely no romance drama 😂 But that phone call, where he asked her to enable the camera so that he could show her the dog was… 😳🫠🫠 LOL! Totally got why she was suddenly flustered when she noticed that intense look. 💯

Yay for auntie! I really like her, too! Their family scenes were always a breather. 😃

Yes, that video call, that was him flirting!! He unashamedly ditched the dog and occupied the whole screen 😁 And then the next video call before he got hit. He carefully chose the lighting angle before dialing 😄

For what it’s worth, I really liked DWY! It surely has its flaws, but there were also very funny, sweet, and touching scenes in there. You have to stomach the bane of rom-com reality (very creepy characters, & the usual tropes), but overall I’m not mad that I watched this - on the contrary! Jo Boa’s character was cute as well. Just became a little frustrating later on. Maybe give it a try? 😉

I’m living for those small scenes between them in MPD! The meals, the hand grab, etc. 🥰 Fast-forwarded most of the creepy stuff. 🫣

Ps: Yes. She fell into that pit in the forest. 🙄😂🫣

I found people very hard on Hong-Jo when her character and reactions were explained by her past.

CURRENTLY WATCHING
LOVELY RUNNER Episode 8 may have been the single best episode of anything I have seen in a long time. The show and actors have done such a great job of establishing the characters of Sol and Sun Jae and their connection that when they reunited in this episode, it was so layered with feelings, meaning, longing and hope that it held my attention and heart the whole time. There was so much good comedy in this episode and then, bam, in an instant the poignancy of their feelings would just hit straight to the heart. And the kiss was everything-their past, their present and their hope for the future. Kim Hye Yoon and Byun Woo Seok are magical together in this show.

I don’t understand everything about the time traveling (however, I do admit that it made me go back and rewatch the episodes to catch all the details they have been showing us the whole time), but it became evident that both Sol and Sun Jae have been saving each other and changing each other’s lives for the better through big heroic gestures, like water rescues and headbutts, and also often in small, but meaningful gestures, like a kind word, food, and acknowledgement of one another’s struggles. Part of this show’s message to live and love while you can and appreciate the small moments with the people you love, and this show makes me do that for the show. Sun Jae and Sol have eclipsed all other dramas for me at the moment.

WILL LOVE IN SPRING Interestingly, this show has a lot of similarities to Lovely Runner, a FL with a disability, lessons about the unpredictability of life and death, and living in the moment. (However, there is not much comedy and many more deaths as he works in a funeral parlor.) The leads in this Cdrama are grown ups and act like grown ups, which is very refreshing. The central tension between them, how much one should sacrifice one’s own dreams and commitments for a relationship and whether such a sacrifice or compromise would lead to resentment, is understandable even if it is not always handled well. Li Xian and Zhou YuTong are such natural actors with both charm and gravitas and the chemistry between them is amazing here. A good watch.

THINKING ABOUT WHETHER TO WATCH ONE EPISODE IN
FRANKLY SPEAKING I made it three-quarters of the way through the first episode, past the elevator but before accident that sets up the show. I haven’t had the time between travel and rewatching episodes of Lovely Runner to finish this week’s episodes. However, the first the impressions were that it didn’t keep my attention despite all the frantic antics—hair pulling, pant pooping, etc. The acting was fine, but I think I wanted more heart with the comedy. I think this show is a victim of being pale in comparison to my current watches, so I may return to it when it will fare better.

FINISHED:

1. MY MAN IS CUPID - A stupid but fluffy and amusing tale about cupids. You are, however, required to leave your brain at the door in order to enjoy this.

LIVE WATCH:

1. BLOOD FREE - Han Hyo-Joo and Ju Ji-Hoon continue to deliver week after week!

RESUMING THIS WEEK:

1. DR SLUMP - Stopped halfway before I embarked on my travels. Hopefully I can finish it this week.

OTHER WATCHES:

1. SUZUME - This sublime Fantasy anime movie offering from Makoto Shinkai just shines!

TO BEGIN THIS WEEK:

1. LOVELY RUNNER - Discovered that it's on Viu so here we go! I could do with a nice fluffy rom-com that doesn't have a serial killer plot shoehorned in...

Lovely Runner (through Ep. 8): Whew ... things got hot for a moment there. But as delightful as it was watching Sol and Sun-jae being on the same page romantically for once, I'm not surprised more trouble is on the way because we're only halfway through the show. Also, it felt a little unfair/unbalanced that Sun-jae had nursed a one-sided love for 15 years, whereas Sol's non-fan feelings toward him had existed for only months at most thanks to her trip to the past. I wonder if there will come a time when they'll be more balanced in terms of the duration and knowledge of their mutual affection.

Midnight Photo Studio (through Ep. 14): Saving Ep. 15 so I can watch the last two together as perhaps they were meant to be. To be honest, some of the supernatural elements have lost me, but I'm still hoping for the best for the OTP. As for our ghost-human pairing, I just don't see how that's going to last.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic (through Ep. 12): Still speeding along! And still very watchable (with liberal fast-forwarding of the scheming villains). It's evident that Do-ra and Pil-seung belong together -- they really are happy together in a way they aren't in any other circumstances. The secondary and tertiary couples are promising, too.

Missing Crown Prince (through Ep. 6): Was that a twinge of sympathy I felt for the dowager? She thought she had the palace under her control, but now she seems to have been sidelined. Looking forward to the OTP's adventures in the wild. I was wondering when we'd finally get more romance. Perhaps this weekend.

Will Love in Spring: So, so, so good. What a contemporary romance should be. Except it's not just a romance -- the family relationships and friendships are also richly portrayed. And it wrestles with the complex issues of life -- love, desire, death, separation -- with a lot of warmth and wisdom.

Blossoms in Adversity: Hugely entertaining with an optimistic viewpoint and one of my favorite historical FLs of all time. One of the most fun shows to watch in recent memory.

Starting:
Twinkling Watermelon: A fine tale, charming. I watch on viki and love the possibility to comment, but hate all that hate … I think the FL is fun and am really tired of all the petty moralistic puritans. Trouble like her is completely necessary in this story.
Watching Continued:
Our Blooming Youth: There’s a great Re-Watch Club. I giffed a sequence for Thursday’s discussion, on the fan wall of @23new2Kdrama
My Lovely Runner: Arriving in our time, this story is getting better – though still angsty.
The People Demand that Woo-seok Live Happily Ever After!
Love Is Like a Cat : This ends Tuesday, and they have the whole “scandal” thing to clear up before that.
.
Queen of Tears: I believe everybody would have liked to see more of how their lives worked out together, but it was a beautiful ending, and consistent with the trend of this drama to reflect upon authenticity, “what does it mean to be yourself?”, acting, and tropes. It was done dramatically and with a lot of humour along the way.

Not a K-drama:
Bird Box Live Cam: Thursday was The Great Hatching Day. I was really worried about the chicklets being so quiet, but I think most of them will come after it. I put out some water yesterday … hope it’ll be helpful. And for you, I put up a Hatch Day video on youtube. Links in the comments. (When the DB staff has had time to make sure I am not scamming y’all. If you are impatient, go to my fan wall, the link is there, too.
Finished:
SPY Family Season 2: Still a hilarious (and dramatic) anime – And heartily recommended. Now I can’t wait for season 3.
Heartbreak High: A very dramatic but also very good show. I hope there’ll be a third season.

Doctor Slump: Never actually good but more pleasant enough with judicious fast forwarding, even in the last episode. I feel both these actors did what they could with the writing, but they have aged out of some of the silly antics. Would have been much better as 12 episodes.

Shogun: I remember the original version back in the day. The production value here is off the charts and the acting is fine. I'm interested in the story but not particularly invested in any of the characters. So on the one hand, I like the more ensemble way of doing it but there is a cost. Maybe that will change as I'm only close to half way in.

I am on a mission to complete shows that inadvertently didn't get completed and I can't remember why. Hence me finally finishing Dr. Slump. However, I also finished the last season of Mike and Molly and the last season of Rizzoli and Aisles and I still have a few others.

Favorite show watched recently is Fallout on Amazon Prime. Not familiar with the game at all but well done.

Show I will start next is Lovely Runner. Y'all can't be wrong ;)

COMPLETED
Flex X Cop: Terrific from start to finish! When an ensemble drama comes together this well, it's storytelling magic. I really enjoyed the characters, the acting, and the production overall. Just the right mix of mystery, drama, comedy, and thrills. It was edgy without losing that k-drama charm. I don't usually like second seasons, but I love that we're getting one here. ❤️
Once Upon a Small Town: Cute and just right for my mood, plus I'm a sucker for stories like this filmed during the summer in rural South Korea. The scenery is wildly appealing. Having rejected this when it first came out, I was curious to give it a try after @attiton mentioned it recently 😉 There's absolutely nothing groundbreaking but it is easy on the heart and eyes.

WATCHING
Carry Sun-Jae and Run: eps 7-8 What more to say about a show that's reached 10/10 on the squee-meter thanks to chemistry that's like a house a-fire 🔥😍
The Midnight Studio: ep 14 Saving the last two eps for next week. I liked ep 14, although I'm sensing from fan wall posts that not all beanies did. I was ok with the resolution of the uncle's death, although it was a little abrupt. In the beginning 16 episodes seemed like too much for this story, but now it feels a bit rushed.
Missing Crown Prince: eps 5-6 I still like it. Really! Will post my reactions again this week on my fan wall.

STARTED
Frankly Speaking: eps 1-2 I like it, but I don't love it (yet). It does have its moments of cute and silly, and a first OST to match ("Freeze" by Seo Heo and Lee Do). Definitely feels old school and I'm a-ok with that as long as the story doesn't fall apart.

C-DRAMA
Will Love in Spring: I tried this, but the ML's occupation in the funeral industry is not working with my mood rn having just visited a few elderly relatives last week. I may watch Blossoms in Adversity instead.

Have a great week everyone! 😎

It was like a balm to the soul...it proceeds exactly how you'd think and ends by being satisfying on all the main plot lines! Lovely Runner: SQUEE! The reunion was just so beautiful and funny and fully of emotion and tension. Definitely the highlight of my week too!

Queen of Tears: Ended well, though I could have really done without all the makjang dramatic twists and dragging some moments out to the point of me rolling my eyes, especially when the episodes were already so long. I'm going to miss the sparkling dialogue, zingers, positive relationships, and the creativity when it came to the non-villain scenes.

Blossoms in Adversity (cdrama, up to ep 31): I love all the stuff with the heroine taking care of business and leading her family and the women supporting each other, but the palace stuff is a pain. The emperor seems like a ticking time bomb of narcissism. Poor Sixth Prince!

Finished QUEEN OF TEARS and read the death year on the grave first as 2014 and that she had died from the brain tumour after all. The two episodes with all that makjang, the imprisonment, shooting and happy end would have been then an 'ATONEMENT'-style fantasy. Just when I thought that this is maybe not the worst ending, I realized that both lived a long and happy life and this is ok for me as well. The weekend is a little empty now, sadly so.

Catching up with CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958 and love it. I don't think Lee Je-Hoon has ever let me down!

NOTHING UNCOVERED is weirdly watchable. The psycho psychologist is gone, but the other villains are doing a pretty good job. The pregnancy is adding an interesting dilemma to the story. The two ML carry the drama with all their tensions and the frequently changing ups and downs in relation to the woman they both want.

Still on the fence with FRANKLY SPEAKING. The humour is hit and miss, but at times really good. Quite a few things copied from Jealousy Incarnate, but that is not a bad thing.

Will have to catch up with BLOOD FREE and will give ATYPICAL FAMILY a go, even though the both the writer's and director's track record is not promising.

Lovely Runner remains the highlight of my week, which now consists of counting down how many days remain until Monday. I described it to a friend as akin to watching a Great Dane bemused and smitten with a feisty kitten, both super protective of the other, but of course it's so much more than that.

The only other watching I squeezed in this week was Iris, which somehow magically did not disappear from Netflix after all. I'm getting pretty impatient with it, fast forwarding through the many longing-for-each-other and reminiscing melo scenes, and rolling my eyes at the outdated plot, which to its credit moves quickly from one improbability to the next, but I'm hanging in for Jang Hyuk. Where the heck are you, Oppa?

Finished Queen of Tears, and may I just say how much I enjoyed the amazing Grace? Now there's a redemption arc! I don't think I've seen a drama with so many happy endings for so many characters, excluding of course our two sociopathic villains, who got the ending they deserved. And so much pretty. Not since Money Flower have I enjoyed looking at a male lead quite so much, for both acting and sheer good looks. (Now you know why I'm hanging in on Iris.)

Not found anything new Kdrama-wise to watch this week, and dropped Frankly Speaking halfway through ep 1- that manager fiddling with his toes all the time makes me want to barf. I cannot continue. Waiting for Midnight Hagwon Romance with bated breath now.

Fast-forwarding heavily through Chief Inspector, because all that beating up and violence is just egregious to me. I'm still liking the team and their problem -solving; I just wish they'd use their brains, and not their fists, as the first resort- they seem to get better results like that anyway. Also hoping nothing happens to his new wife, because they seem to be targeting the team personally now :(

All this dissatisfaction is because Will Love in Spring has me in a damn chokehold- I don't know how many times I've rewatched excerpts or whole episodes (7, 8, and 17) while waiting for new ones to drop. It is a complete antidote to the OTT-fest that was Queen of Tears. Everything about this drama is just so so beautiful - I read somewhere that the director has worked with Wong Kar Wai, and I can see the influence.
And to hear Adler, Goethe and David Eagleman mentioned in the space of a few episodes? Wow. I've read Brain, but I ordered the audiobook of Sum: 40 tales of the Afterlife, after that excerpt he reads in ep 8, and it's every bit as wonderful in whole. Though Li Xian can film himself reading the phonebook and I'll now watch ;) I appreciate that they don't shy away from dark themes, but deal with them deftly and sensitively, and of course, the chemistry between the leads is fire! It's a drama with adults, for adults- I haven't seen this in Korean shows, I don't know why the coyness. Though I haven't seen enough Chinese shows to decide whether this is an exception - Fake It Till You Make It is also similar in treatment, so maybe I'm just more attracted to dramas like these.
This show is now in my top dramas of all time across languages. I hope Midnight won't disappoint me- because One Spring Night is in my Top 10, so fingers crossed!

PS the mother practically forcing ML to become a prosecutor and cutting him off and treating him harshly when he dropped out was annoying to watch. The poor guy isn't at fault in how she ran away and became a single mother. Why does he have to become a prosecutor for her to so proudly brag about raising her son to be a prosecutor just like his so-called father without getting any help from him?
Surely, she will regret it a lot after finding out about her son's illness.

I thought she was the worst mum in K-dramaland. I could not believe how she treated her son when he was well let alone when she knew he was sick.

This Header brings me Peace😊

Doctor Slump🧑‍⚕️(16/16): Third Bean of 2024 earned!🥳Much heavier than I expected, a tad too long, and some unnecessary plot points. So far, the bad stuff. The show also has our two Parks that brought lovable characters to life and created friendship goals. While not minding the romance, I loved them a lot more as friends for two reasons: First, we need more healthy representation of friendship across genders. Second, the duo mirrored many of the hardships my watching bestie and I endured. This drama honored and acknowledged our suffering through our OTP and many wisdom quotes. Also, Yoon Park!❤️

Bridgerton Season 1 (8/8): Polin season 3 is around the corner, I must make haste!😉 I finally finished the first 4 books and binged the first season as a breather between the two halves of this week. I hope to finish the second season by next weekend to be caught up by the premiere date and to be able to clear my watch schedule for the May batch!🙏🏻

I started and finished the CDrama Will Love in Spring this week, and.....my goodness, what a beautiful, heartbreaking (in a good way!), wistful, and thoughtful drama!!!! I felt like I could watch Li Xian and Zhou Yutong learn to love each other, make mistakes, and communicate with each other forever, instead of just the 21 episodes. The ending of the last but one episode had be ready to blow a gasket, but they quickly fixed that in the finale. Altogether a wonderful drama from episode 5 onward (heh) all the way to the end. It could very well be the drama of the year. 9.5/10

That cliffhanger … it was hard for me to sleep on it! But it would’ve been out of step with the rest of the show to go there, so I’m glad it was a fake-out. I could’ve used a few more minutes with all the lovely characters at the end, but that’s the show’s fault for making them seem like real people we loved spending time with.

AMIDST A SNOWSTORM OF LOVE (30/30) : Once you accept that it’s slow and nothing happens, it's easy to watch. The couple has incredible chemistry and the friendship between all the characters is adorable. I now want to play pool (even if I still don’t understand the rules 😂) ! I recommend it for those who are looking for a relaxing drama.

BURNING FLAMES (09/40) : - On break -.

GROWING TOGETHER (11/40) : A realistic drama. All the characters are friendly.

KESENAI "WATASHI” (08/13) : I’m still waiting the subtitles for the ninth episode.

SU JI & U RI (28/120) : Na Young has (and is) a serious problem : she is definitely sick and needs medical treatment.

Queen of Tears: The biggest miss of this show was no explanation of Moh Seul-hee's motive. Why did she infiltrate the Hongs? Why after successfully killing one grandkid, did she never try to kill anyone else in the family for 20 years? The second biggest miss of this show was the absence of Hyun-tae's wife. I get that they were going for a Reborn Rich reunion, but it's ridiculous when even Da-hye and Gun-woo visited Hyun-woo in the hospital, yet his own sister-in-law and nephew never did, nor was she in their joint family photo or at Hyun-woo and Hae-in's wedding. When Grace was released from jail and Soo-chul called after her, "Where are you going? My mom told me to pick you up. Hurry up," then took her bag, I awwed. I adored our secretary trio, despite barely meeting Soo-chul's secretary, and was relieved that Secretary Kim turned good. The best PPL was when Conan texted a phishing link to the hitman. I burst out laughing when Soo-chul asked Beom-ja, "Aunt, do you live here?" I never bought Kwak Dong-yeon and Lee Joo-bin as a married couple (or Kwak Dong-yeon as a father), but Beom-ja and Young-song gave me second-hand embarrassment. Overall, Queen of Tears has been the worst drama that Park Ji-eun has written.

Hide: I loved our four good guys so much. I need to apologize to Shin-hwa because I didn't trust her at first, but since day one, I'd wanted Moon-young to work together with Jin-woo and Officer Baek. They made such a good team. I squealed over the four of them working at Shin-hwa's new law firm, and Shin-hwa trying to maintain her composure in front of their client while on the phone with her investigators was ROFL. Jin-woo was my favorite character. Did he like Moon-young, or am I just seeing romance where there was none? (For the record, I never shipped them.) Jin-woo really was Moon-young's biggest cheerleader. The way I cackled when Shin-hwa lied to her ex-husband, "That young ex-con is my boyfriend."! Last week's cliffhanger, I was so excited about Seok-goo turning to Moon-young's side. I felt sorry every time Ma Kang abused him, so I'm sad that Seok-goo died. Bom was the true victim in this and Chairman Choi. Sung-jae and his mother were beyond shameless. She kept calling Moon-young's dad a murderer when she and her son are murderers themselves. I wanted to pull Sung-jae's mother's hair like Moon-young pulled Yeon-joo's. Moon-young's confrontation with Yeon-joo and Sung-jae's mother was my favorite scene, "Police? Okay, let's go. They're at my house."

During the last 15 minutes of HIDE I saw the makings of a spin-off (shall we tentatively call it HIDE AND SEEK?).
Now retired Baek (Kim sang-ho) and young Jin-woo (Lee Min-hae) were terrific together doing legwork for Attorney Shin-hwa and Office Manager (probably disbarred lol) Moon-young.
One thing though (and I am surprised to say this) Jin-woo will have to work on his boxing and other defensive skills. Maybe cameos of Jin-woo training with the BLOODHOUNDS boys Woo Do-hwan Lee Sang-mi. Jin-woo got taken down too often in HIDE.

In Jin-woo's defense, he did get shot with a rifle and clubbed over the head with a baseball bat and a crowbar, but still jumped into the ocean to save Moon-young.

Detective Baek was so funny. He was funny with Shin-hwa too, who was funny herself (there was a lot of comic relief in this drama). I'm so glad that Jin-woo made a friend. I was really hoping that Detective Baek and Moon-young would become as close to make amends for their past misunderstanding.

Even more busy week – dramas? What dramas? I barely slept!

“Drama news” segment – air dates, announcements etc:

- ADWAD started filming (and on iQiyi now? huh)! We got character teaser, many posters and shorts both for announcement and booting ceremony - that's how you do it! *side-eyes certain stingy shows* Big news is that it's indeed largely a comedy AND LYN's character has another identity. Which fandom already collectively dubbed as Mortal Kombat boss and I cannot unsee it now, look:
https://mydramalist.com/70247-jiang-dui-dui-chong-sheng-ji/photos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd8pXb2pgPo

- promo campaign is FLUFFY – first PD made this gem:
https://i.mydramalist.com/kAWmzd_3f.jpg

Which escalated into this (puppies wear drama logo shirts too!):
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GMpHpQqaQAA2y0X?format=jpg&name=large

- other details collected from press-releases – his role is a scheming Prince with royal ambitions (but caring for his vassals – does that mean current ruler/heir suck and he wants to take over for censorship-friendly valid reasons?), who fights his written fate and is greedy enough to want BOTH power and love. Good luck with that, sweety! Oh, and leads will have – or were supposed to until transmigrated scriptwriter FL took over and opposed the idea – tragic (for FL) forced (for both or just her?) marriage. Which prompted dude to open the chasing season. Oh my, so juicy already! Will we see LYN in nefarious seducer mode?^^

- speaking of costumes – there's certain resemblance between his styling here and in TPOB, particularly the wig. Less so in newest leaks, thankfully – as much as that style was great, I prefer distinctive looks in different roles. Rich bitch royal wardrobe already earned mass praise from folks. Black-red-gold combo seems to be main theme, but love that there's already 3 (!) blue outfits as well.

- no further details yet on The Other Persona Li Shiliu (aka Li16 – what's with numbers-based names in cdramas lately?) and Thanos' glove is a bit extra (is it a weapon? looks like there's some mechanism in it), but overall rizz is fire – reflection here makes it look like his pupils are cat-like, rawr! I was ready to throw a fit seeing his mole edited out in teaser, but it's still there on raw photos, phew
https://twitter.com/Y446834Yoshi/status/1785182707095638252

- aside of drowning us in content, production also released a warning that they hired a legal team to deal with cyber attacks against cast – the character development! Sue them all into the ground!

- fiiinally in other news (sorry, got carried away) HEROES (2024) is confirmed to air somewhere this month! For real – it's in Tencent's official May schedule. Based on LYN's “just recorded its OST recently” it probably means late May, but whatever!

- JOL2 is all but confirmed for May 16.

- LYF2 and the long-suffering THE GOLDEN HAIRPIN both are rumored for summer.

That outfit is sooo video-game that it wouldn't work in a serious show, but for a meta-heavy comedy it's perfect! I have fingers crossed that JOY OF LIFE 2 will be available for me on a legal US stream. I watched the original JOL on Viki. Will Viki do the right thing and license JOL 2?

Over the last month or so I have had a bumpy ride in cdramaland. I had started two 2020 historical mysteries. I finished one: THE SILENT CRIMINAL (Viki US) because it was only 13 episodes and the two male leads were engaging. The second DETECTIVE (iQIYI) (set in very late Qing dynasty 1911) became a soft drop because I got sucked into the contemporary CITY OF THE CITY (iQIYI). I really liked the two male leads there but that became a hard drop after episode 11. It is set in the world of banking/finance but the constant harping about acquiring wealth by one of the young characters did me in. I couldn’t see lasting another 30 episodes.
The good news is that I am totally available for JOY OF LIFE 2.
It may get a bit hairy if Tencent’s THE GOLDEN HAIRPIN is released soon and legally available because I definitely will watch that also.

With JOL1 insane popularity I have very little doubts the sequel will ever suffer from availability issues, it's only the matter of who pays more. Tho Tencent may want to gatekeep it while drama still airs.

THE GOLDEN HAIRPIN is rumored for July-August. I suppose it's gonna be JOL2>LYF2>TGH, with perhaps some smaller drama(s) in between. I'm only mildly interested in the latter.

This was a week of finishing dramas....

QUEEN OF TEARS: What a chore this drama was for me to finish. Overlong and formulaic, it didn’t work for me despite a stunning and talented cast.

SHOGUN: What a beautiful and impressive show. Not perfect, but nearly perfect.

THREE BODY PROBLEM: This show was at its best in the historical moments. I wish it had spent more time there, because at those moments, I was riveted. Having said that, I’ll be happy to follow that brain to another season should it happen.

Finally making progress and now nearly done with episode 8/16 of Flex X Cop. I am really enjoying the mysterious murders with some kind of rich chaebol angle to let JiSoo shine. I like how quickly each case is solved but there is an overarching mystery which they delve out nuggets for. Somehow I don’t have a temptation to find out what happens at the end and in some ways it’s pointless because I know they plan a season 2.

Call it Love. I am using the FF often and am still only on episode 5. This feels like molasses but it’s the only show I have available on my own device when everyone is using theirs 😢.

Kiss Goblin. A beanie recommended this as a quick simple palate cleaner and I agree. Each episode is only 15 minutes or so which is just the right amount of time for the kiddo and I to watch on her device after she finished all her homework and before bed. Only on episode 4 but it is light and breezy.

Call It Love is one of my top 10 favorite k-dramas, even with the pacing and pink filter. At the time it was running, I read an interview with Lee Sung Kyung who described it as “a drama with blank spaces. Those blank spaces could be the distance between Dong Jin and Woo Joo, the pause between conversations, or the emptiness in the air surrounding the characters. I think the drama well reflected the director’s intention to let the viewers feel all the emotions properly through those pauses and spaces.”

I loved this description (which is why I saved it) and I'm wondering it helps to hang in there with the molasses-like pace?!

Call it Love is a very contemplative drama. It's not a fast plot. The quote Zindigo describes it well. The space in the drama lets you think about your own emotions, as well as the ones in the story. It sounds like it's not the best match for you at the moment. You probably have enough filling your life with a kiddo! Is there anyway to get another show onto your device?

Lovely Runner is occupying majority of my 24 hours! I've been rewatching episodes, interview videos, and old videos of BWS, lol. I love both leads and their chemistry is on fire. I've read S1 of the webtoon and spoilers of the web novel so I'm 90% with its HEA. I am wary though of how they will tie everything up since there was no murder on the source material. I guess its not a KDrama without a plot like this.

I try to see source material and the drama as two very separate experiences this means any changes between them has minimal impact. The drama often adds elements that are not in the source material or mixes it up so readers wanting a true to the source material version can be disappointed. There is also the stress of wondering how it will tie up lose ends which the drama has no intention of tying up in the same way as the source material.

“The problem is, we look for someone to grow old together, while the secret is to find someone to stay a child with.” —Charles Bukowski.

This qoute perfectly states what I wanted to say about DoctorSlump and LovelyRunner. Being childish with someone isn't being emotional stunned, it's rather that you're most comfortable with that person that you can playful and you don't care about the imagery that your inner child comes out. We do have our inner child inside us. They're perfectly mature to others when needed. Being in your 30s or 40s also doesn't mean you have to be "mature " all the time.. to me that's a good mature relationship. Just wanted to say that..

I'm currently watching lovely runner..thoroughly enjoying it. Everything about sunjea makes me love him more. Sol changed his depression and he's living okish now..plot is engaging..romance is fantastic.

Lovely Runner has all my heart. Right now I am just scared the second half won’t be as good, which in dramaland is a pretty realistic fear. But the beauty of the live watch is you have to live with not knowing what might happen completely.

Frankly Speaking- I am still not sure how to feel about this show. The humor wasn’t quite landing for me. I could see once we got the humor channeled into a reality TV show that it could be hilarious, so I’ll give it another couple episodes. I do like the fact that the honesty is more about calling out people getting away with being awful instead of hurtful comments about people.

C-drama Will Love in Spring- well acted and beautiful but more melodrama than I was expecting. I find the ups and down of the relationship very unsettling. I’m never completely sure if they are actually healthy for each other.

Frankly Speaking (1-2): Absolutely hilarious, and I need more, so bring on the next episodes!

Flex x Cop (13-14): Did I expect to love this show when I started it a few weeks ago? No. Did I fall in love with it? Yes. Am I deliberately putting off watching the last 2 episodes so it won't be over? Also yes.

Midnight Studio (4-5): Catching up. I enjoy it, but I don't love it. This will probably be a slow watch for me.

Doctor Slump (6-10): Also catching up. While I loved the beginning, I'm starting to love it less and less. I don't know why, but I know it's certainly not because of the lead actors, that's for sure.

Hope or Dope (S1): A dark show that's also not really that dark in my opinion. Like, all these kids are miserable one way or the other, and the drugs offer them a potential way out, but the bonds they make with one another also makes it quite hopeful. One thing's for sure: these kids deserve happiness. Will probably watch S2 in a few days.

Alienoid: Action, spectacle, aliens, idiots, and Kim Tae-ri with guns. I think that about sums it up. Need to watch the sequel!

Queen of Tears ep 15-16 As much as I like Baek Hong, the villains are very tiring. I feel bad for Park Sung Hoon for getting hate for his role here. While I hope Kwak Dong Yeon get a great lead role after this, he deserve it. Meanwhile for the drama itself, its a mixed bag for me. There are part I love and there are parts that couldve been written better. I will remember the good parts fondly.

Lovely Runner ep7-8 Sun Jae has not changed since high school how is that possible? He still has the same giddy reactions to Sol and care for her the same way. While Sol still has a one track mind to save Sun Jae from harm. Let us not forget their hot makeout sesh. ☺️ I'd rather not mention that creepy killer stalking Sol. Now I do wonder about the appearance of Tae Sung. Why was he where we found him? What is he up to now? Did Sol's peptalk change his life's course for the better? Also why is Sun Jae so fond of hiding things under blankets this week? 🤭

Blood Free ep 7-8 things got more interesting this week. That makes the potential attraction between the leads seem possible. But their enemies.put a damper on things temporarily, I hope. Jayun and BF need to squash the hyenas so they publicly announced their biotech advances and asked for volunteers. Such a boss move. Chae Woon has his own personal vendetta that is not against the interests of BF. As noble as Ja Yoo's intentions are for develiping these biotech advancements, I still worry about how they got to this point and what else they are capable of doing in the future.

Europe Outside Our Tent: Southern France ep9 paragliding! I didnt expect them to go through with it but they did. Mi Ran got to experience the twirling which is amazing since its akin to a rollercoaster ride. Kudos to her!
Also I can't believe that McDonalds is twice as expensive in Switzerland than in Korea. Very excited about their wine tour next episode.

I Am Nobody ep21- 23 Chulan has his redeeming qualities. I especially love the bromance earned the hard way between previous competitors Chulan, Wang Ye and Zhuge Qing. They were the highlight of these 3 episodes for me.

Goodbye Earth ep1 -2 for a dystopian drama I felt very little emotional hook. Its obvious we were left with the B-story. Althroughout the two episodes I've seen I was waiting for something to happen but never did. I was left feeling empty with this various storylines that does not make sense. Its nice to see the little of Yoo Ah In scenes they left but its too little. I gave up midway ep2.

Actually, a lot of Swiss people shop in the other countries France, Italy or Germany. But we are limited if we don't want to pay taxes, for example :
- 6 bottles of wine or 1 strong alcohool
- 1kg of meat,

I don't do it because 1) I want to support people in Switzerland 2) I don't have a car and it's not practical from where I live.

But the salaries are higher, so it's why we can live here. But there are lot of "Frontaliers", people who lives in France, Germany and Italy but works in Switzerland :
- Allemagne : 64 934
- Autriche : 8 807
- France : 223 775
- Italie : 91 307
- Liechtenstein : 687
There are more than 300'000 persons who across the border everyday. It's funny for example people living in Evian in France come by boat in Lausanne to work 😊

It must be lovely to live there whichever part you are. From what I see in media, there are a lot of great places to see there. There must be a lot of tourists all season long. Especially now with the popularity of Kdramas which has featured Switzerland like CLOY and other travel variety shows.

Absolutely good reasons why one should just buy the necessities in Switzerland.

A friend of mine went to college in Lausanne. She loved it there and has lots of stories to tell.
The Frontaliers got the best of both worlds I suppose.

My happy watch of the week wasn't a watch. It was a call-out to Dramabeans contributor Minnie🫘👩🏻‍🚀Pioneer and Teacher 👩🏻‍🏫🌱🏹 for her review of QOT; this quote exactly "For more information on QoT script please refer to episode 7 of Lovely runner, time stamp 28:30." Since I was about to check in on LOVELY RUNNER, episode 7, I was delighted to find that the screenwriters from PERFECT MARRIAGE REVENGE had coffee or something with LOVELY RUNNER's screenwriters and they happily skewered the nonsensical, overblown and disastrously convoluted style of story telling. That's just me. But when Byeon Woo-seok describes (with a straight face) the story behind the screenplay he's rejecting, I became a fan for life. Thank you Minnie, and thank you LOVELY RUNNER, your job is done.

Also very much enjoying MISSING CROWN PRINCE, and jumped over to RICH MAN on Viki to get a better sense of Suho. This young man is intense!

BLOOD FREE has me until the end. It's a great thriller.

This week also enjoying two C-drama comedies, THE DAY OF BECOMING YOU (excellent) and LEGALLY ROMANCE with Huang Zitao and Song Zuer, are just such fun. Highly recommended!

I was watching and lovin the cdrama Will love in spring. I was truly appreciating it for portraying an adult love relationship, which we hardly see in kdramas...
But when the ML decided to shove the FL against a wall and forsed a kiss, I had to stop and scream at my screen furiously. She seriosuly fought him for a few seconds and he did nothing. I don't care if at a certain point she decided to reciprocate the kiss. That was not okay and it had happened before.
I don't want to see this kind of crap on my screen anymore. So I decided to drop the show...

Yes! And to top it all, the ML then explains himself by saying something like "that's gender equality, you kissed me, I can force a kiss too".
Technically that was the 2nd time he assaulted her, not the 1st time...
How infuriating to make him drop some feminist comment there to justify his action!

Wave Makers: While this bills itself as a behind-the-scenes view of a Taiwanese presidential campaign, it's really a brutal indictment of how sexual harassment, extortion, homophobia and gender discrimination get covered up, ignored or sensationalized by both liberal and conservative parties in the name of "winning elections." The fact that it sparked a real "Me Too" wave in Taiwan after it aired is a testament to how dramatically effective it is in addressing these issues. It doesn't pull any punches at it looks at the uneven playing field that women face in politics regardless of their age or role.

LOVELY RUNNER: This show so, so sweet. Sun Jae is so cute pretending to be cool in front of Sol but positively sparkling with giddiness when she isn't watching. But the killer is starting to annoy me, has he really kept a grudge for 14 years just to get out of prison and repeat? I really wonder if his motives are so strong or if he just wants to go back to jail and couldn't think of an easier way.

UNDER THE POWER: I love the villain so much, he is so deliciously evil and very well acted. I probably love the actor's portrayal more than I love the written character and am sure to look up more of Han Dong's projects. The show itself gets a bit draggy around ep 38 and I'm not quite through yet. I was quite disappointed the nasty cousin died, she had potential.

WHY I DRESS UP FOR LOVE: Another beanie recommendation and it's really different for a Jdrama. I don't feel anybody doing some heavy manipulation and there 's no-one really over the top like Japanese drama characters tend to be. The ML also bears a striking resemblance to Gong Yoo. Really looking forward to this watch.

Completed Goodbye Earth yesterday. While many complained the drama is boring, personally I like the drama because it has many strong female characters protecting the children and the pure love Yoon sang Eun hold out for his fiancee Se-kyung

Watching:
---------------

1) Kesenai "Watashi": Fukushu no Rensa - this Jdrama is about a victim of rape and her way of getting justice. Up till episode 8 she gets her satisfying revenge over three former classmates who ruined her life.

2) The Midnight Photo - one more episode left. In the beginning I enjoyed this drama very much but after the ML and FL being a couple, it's getting quite stuffy, cliche and I need it to end quickly. The story got refreshing when the uncle reappear but then he had to go too. I like the Grimm Reaper though 🤭 and we only saw it in the 1st and the last two episodes.

3) Let's Kidnap Sunjae and Run! - I love ep. 8 very much and Sol's antics to stay with him longer are funny! I really hope Sunjae who is so cute with the blue egg's time capsule survive the attack by that darned crazy cab driver.. jaebal 🙏

4) Blood Free - now Chae Woon got super enhanced hearing and super strength and Ja Yoo wants to do the same for herself? With too many things on board and two episodes left, I wonder how the drama will handlebthis including the sexual tension between the ML and FL while we are told that there is no romance between them 😂

5) Missing Crown Prince - The best part so far is how the Queen standing up for her family while the King is still unconscious. I haven't seen a Queen with a backbone before except Under the Queen's Umbrella. Suho is not very appealing as the CP and story seems drag a lot and the political plot is boring but I will stay for now because I like the female lead.

Going to start watching soon:
------------------------------------------------
-The House of Owl
-Yakusoku 16-nenme no Shinjitsu
-Frankly Speaking
-The A Typical Family

6) Chief Inspector 1958 - how could I forget that I also watching this? Coz everytime I see Lee Je-hoon he reminds me every bit of Taxi Driver. His teammates and his boss are fun and love their brotherhood and humour, hopefully they survive the show till the end. Didn't expect Younghan will get married so soon. With his growing enemies, she's going to be his weak point.

Because of Passover, I managed to get behind on TV watching. Which is great! I watch too much tv! This week I caught up on and finished:

Hide--I felt like the main character's tears at the end were totally sad. She was betrayed by so many people, so thoroughly! I totally understood her compassion for the villain, even though she'd become a completely awful person. Through the whole thing, she had to be brave and not give in to her feelings. (Maybe driving her car through the window doesn't count as not giving in though.) Great show.

Queen of Tears I keep seeing all your mixed reviews of this show. Hello, this show was just one long treat. It's like, "I'm sick of this garlic bread." (I was just thinking about what is delicious, and I thought, bread. For some reason.)

I'm nearly caught up on Lovely Runner. I almost dropped it because I forgot how good it was to watch. I was just like, "Oh yeah, it's the one with the time skip, sometimes there's schadenfreude, do I really want to keep watching it?" But then I saw I'd left myself a note about where I'd left off so I picked it up. I just love their faces, especially Kim Hye-yoon. As much as I don't like seeing people being embarrassed, I love seeing them have all the other feelings. Yeah. I'm about an episode and a half behind.
I probably won't bother to finish Midnight Studio.

I started a Korean BL on Viki Rakuten called Boys Be Brave!. It's very cute. The secret to chemistry is acting, always.

Most of us who are 'disappointed with' QoT definitely are not. For me it was my favorite currently broadcasting show. Our sense of loss lies in the fact that a really good show could have been a truly great show- particularly in the hands of as great a writer as Park Ji-eun who is absolutely one of the very best.

I have a similar feeling about the comedy BUSINESS PROPOSAL. It is a really good comedy that I recommend to anyone. Yet, having read the webtoon, I also know that some very critical and in fact illogical departures were made from the original story that made the show much less than it could have been and, if those mistakes had not been made then BP would have stood as the greatest K-drama comedy ever.
