News bites: March 12, 2016

  • In response to press inquiries about a Signal 2, PD Kim Won-seok said, “All of us, from writer to cast, feel enormous pride and attachment to this show so we’ve opened up the possibility of making a second season.” He continued, “I know there are concerns that we could take away the lingering effects of the first season by making a second, so the writer-nim and I will take some time to carefully consider it.” [Osen]
  • He’s so good at these kinds of roles: Choi Won-young (Come Back Ajusshi) joins Hwarang: The Beginning as a Shilla aristocrat with a gentle smile, but underneath his peaceful exterior he’s gripping a metaphorical knife. He’s a legendary doctor who chose a path of ruin versus wealth, and despite a lack of riches, he’ll care for all who are injured. He’s suffered heartbreak, and his past love will become a source of pain for him in the present. The drama airs in the latter half of the year on KBS. [Xports News]

  • Choi Won-young, Ha Yeon-joo, Lee Jae-yoon

  • Ha Yeon-joo (My Secret Hotel) will play a top manager at a hedge fund in Goodbye Mr. Black. Her father (Lee Won-jong) is a reformed man who considers Black (Lee Jin-wook) his savior. Having studied business and IT in the States, she’ll return to Korea and end up participating in Black’s revenge plans. Ha will pursue Black, even though she knows he’s in love with Yoo In-young and that Moon Chae-won also has her sights set on him. The manhwa-based melodrama is being adapted by the writer of Can You Hear My Heart and I Miss You and will be directed by Han Hee (Empress Ki). Goodbye Mr. Black kicks off on Wednesday, March 16. [Sports Chosun]
  • Lee Jae-yoon (Dazzling Temptation) will bring the drama in tvN’s Mon-Tues show Oh Hae-young Again. He’s a self-made businessman, but more importantly, he’s Oh Hae-young’s ex, and he’s in possession of a big secret between Oh and Eric’s character. Oh Hae-young Again premieres in May. [Sports Chosun]

  • Lee Sung-jae, Choi Sung-won, Jo Dal-hwan

  • JTBC’s fusion fantasy romance sageuk Mirror of the Witch will include bromantic elements, too: Choi Sung-won (Answer Me 1988) will play the extremely loyal bestie of Heo Jun (Yoon Shi-yoon). The lead will need the moral support; Jo Dal-hwan (Sweet Savage Family) has been cast as Heo Jun’s half-brother, and he’ll hold a grudge against his smarter, handsomer and more skilled brother. Lee Sung-jae (Warm and Cozy) will also assist Yoon and Kim Sae-ron in standing against evil shaman Yeom Jung-ah, while falling for her in a “bloody romance” at the same time. The show with a little bit of everything will air on Fridays and Saturdays beginning in May.
    [Herald, Osen, Joongang]
  • Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, the Joseon-era youth romance to be headlined by Park Bo-gum, has a timeslot. It will be a Monday-Tuesday drama airing in August on KBS. [Joy News 24]

  • Kang Ho-dong, Ahn Jae-hyun, Lee Su-geun, Eun Ji-won

  • The cast of New Journey to the West will have to stay on their toes — it’s quite possible that the program will continue beyond two seasons and become a recurring variety show. Actors Kang Ho-dong, Lee Su-geun, Eun Ji-won and Ahn Jae-hyun returned from filming the second season in Chengdu last month, and while the footage hasn’t aired yet, Na PD and his willing victims will embark on another trip to an undisclosed location in mid-April. While the second season will be released on NaverCast (as the first was), viewers have been clamoring for the show to air on tvN, and the cable channel is still contemplating giving it a Friday night timeslot. [MBN Star]
  • The production delays for Only One Love Like You proved to be too much for Namgoong Min and Lee Yeol-eum — both bowed out of the project they had committed to last December. TV Chosun released a report shortly thereafter that they were scrapping development on the show and would be moving on to other projects; I just hope they reached out to early cast members Kangnam, Hong-bin (of VIXX) and Kevin and Eli (both of UKISS) before the announcement in the press. [E Daily, Joongang, TV Report]

Almost any other PD and his crew, this announcement would fill me with apprehension... But "Signal"? Yes. Absolutely, do it.

The level of attention to script, casting, music, direction, etc is so phenomenal that I would sign on for pretty much anything this team does, and if Signal 2 is the way to do it, do it.

Really wish they would consider a second season of Signal ony but only if the same cast, director and writer all come back and let's say the writer has the time to elaborate and fully develop again an amazing script rather than rush it,like next year maybe,if not better leave it like that and not ruin it...Signal is such a masterpiece can't be ruined for the greed of ratings..Once again kudos to Signal, one of the best dramas in the last years

Judging from the way PD Kim Wok-Seok handled both Misaeng and now Signal (both dramas were rejected by public broadcast and I assume it has something to do with PD's refusal to sell-out) I think the potential Season 2 is in very good hands. Hopefully TvN people are not dumb and won't mess with a winning formula.

Thanks for telling me the name of the PD for Signal and Misaeng. I've never really played attention to the PD and crew etc in Korean TV drama, he is certainly noteworthy having delivered two outstanding works.

And not a stupidly set up love triangle with idiot/wicked second lead in sight. (Do I still sound bitter from Cheese?)

Aww, I just saw online that Lee Je Hoon said that he'll be preparing for the the second season. I have high hopes for this, especially coming from this writer-PD team. Even if takes them awhile to conceptualize things, I'm all for it. One of the best kdramas for me! :)

Insane cheering! Whooo! Do it! They can take their time, get it right. I hope they get everyone on board again. Especially since a time lag can only help the plot - take a year to make the new series and you'll have a past/future ratio to work with.

I wonder if this time, everyone will be on the past-side of the radio? I've always been suspicious that that young cop in Hae Young's station is going to play a bigger role in all of this.

Signal may not really be at peak in the current ratings term but people will definitely recognize the 'masterpiece' in it in due time.

it may have not created enough buzz before and during the showing but people who have seen it will tend to recommend the show as a good entry into the Korean drama world of mystery-thriller genre.

WHUUUUT??
Signal is totally a buzz, has good rating for cable drama (remember it's not on public broadcast, so its resting is soooo good for cable tv)
and people in Korea talk about Signal a looooooot, it's a buzz. Totally. Period. Mind you.

Can they work together to create a different drama and not a season 2 for Signal? I'm scared...

My thoughts too. I want more (always), but I've never liked sequels as well as the fist. I want a strong story, and a strong ending. The only way I'd maybe consider it is if they did a total spin-off: same world same tone, but none of the same people as main characters--maybe a prequel or something like that.

Those are my thoughts as well.

Strangely enough, I do not want a sequel for Signal, the mere thought fills me with apprehension. I am afraid that they will ruin the ending for a sequel that may not be as good as the original. Unless they plan on changing the original cast completely, then they may have a shot...

Well because of how it ended there might be a possibility for season 2. Maybe explain more about the radio, how did ljh get it and maybe make a story of how it used to have a different owner before ljh got it. Maybe they could communicate with that former owner and solve older cases and explain how everything connects. Or maybe a spin-off, but if they decide to leave it like that I will not hold it against them.

I haven't watched the final episodes yet, but I'M SO DOWN FOR A SECOND SEASON OF SIGNAL any day, any time! My big concern is that it'll take a lot of effort to get the same team back together, which seems like a mission impossible considering the high demand of the main actors. It can't ever be the same without this incredible group consisting of cast/writer/pd/staf.

Ok Signal is best drama according to everywhere so I really want to watch it.

Last week I tried watching first episode. But just only after 20 mins I realised I wasnt even focusing on it. So I stopped and couldnt gather enough excitment to tune back in.

What is wrong with me?! How can I enjoy this drama guys. I was thinking maybe the colour/tone of drama is bland?? I watched on myasiantv and quality of picture seemed really old fashioned.

Anyway.. .how can I enjoy this drama? I already know the ending now. So is it still worth watching?

Maybe Signal's genre is not your kind of liking. The part of the old-fashioned scene emphasize the past, where tv screen is not widescreen like today (4:3) and the color is vintage.

Anyway, YES!!! I am ready for Season 2, with newcast is okay but best with same cast.

It took me a while to get into it, but I generally do not get excited much about police/procedural shows. But this had great character development and looked into what made each character be who they were, and make the choices they made. So it totally paid off.
One little note about image quality: I thought the first couple times I tried watching it that it was a bad video, then I realized that this show is shot in a weird, elongated, lower-quality format for the scenes that take place in the past, with HD and normal proportions in scenes that take place in the present. Maybe that was part of the problem with the quality you're mentioning?

Watch it late at night with most of the lights off. Put away any and all distractions. I get so immersed that I end up hissing instructions to the characters, which makes me look like a crazy person and I NEVER do.

You do need to fully commit to get the full whammy, though.

I think there are some shows that pull out all the stops to wow you from the start - whether it's an epic moment, a "high" adrenaline moment etc etc. So when you watch it, you become addicted to those moments.

This is not one of those shows. Like Misaeng - which took me ages to get into the right frame of mind to watch - they're slow burners. Shows like this demand the audience do some work too - not just sit back and be given the hooks. With these shows, you have to be willing to pay attention, to really give it a chance for the characters to grow and slowly, the world becomes alive.

But the payoff is incredible - once that world becomes real, it doesn't ever really leave you. With Misaeng - which sounded so dry and at first I was like, oh man - they're talking about photocopying and what not. But then the characters become like real people - their little hopes, their frustrations. With Signal - yes, there is the set up of it being both time-travel and a crime drama - but it's also super well-constructed, so the time-travel becomes part of the detective work too.

But you need to give yourself the chance - ie. the right frame of mind, the time, the setting so you're not interrupted. It's okay if you're not in the mood for it now, just come back to it when you have that window in your life.

I tried it too but not working,
maybe I am not in the right mood, I might watch later

it sometimes happen after I watched something like Hannibal and recently Mr.robot and Jessica jones,
when I've had enough of gritty bloody thing from netflix and sometimes it's hard to adjust to korean crime thriller,
it feels really slow or I expect different thing,

I'd ABSOLUTELY LOVE anything they'd make with the same cast, writer,pd etc. however I'm not exactly sure how they'd do a Signal 2?

Like I can see a season 2 with the same concept and tone, but with a completely different main cast.

However the actors were great in this and I'd love to see them back together again for another drama with similar themes/concepts.

I can absolutely see how they'd do Signal 2, in a bunch of different ways. And in true Season 2 fashion rather than some sort of parallel reboot.

While I really loved the ending, they left plenty of strings that could be taken up again for a new phase in the mystery.

SPOILER

Yes, I loved how the show ended. It set itself up for all the components that was to have been similar to the start of things in the first season. So cleverly done, and truly, it showed the idea of time loops, things shift, but the loops remain the same too.

Oh my gosh Signal 2 YES!
The story must continue, it is so damn good I find myself fast forwarding to know what happens.

However, during one of the scene, where PHY and CSY talked in the cafe seems to highlight what we view as viewer, what if there is radio transmission that told LJH his new death timing? Wouldn't it be a never-ending loop?

MAN THE STORY IS DAEBAK. DRAMA OF THE YEAR.

Yes, I agree with you,
It's enough for her to act as naive girl in Liar Game 1,
But, if the writer change and grow her character,
I still love Kim So Eun to take the role.

It took 2 years (if TvN air it this year) to make Liar Game Season 2,.. and i don't know how long they will make Signal Season 2.

Been waiting for Liar Game 2 also!
However, even though the drama was really good, the ratings were considered average/ not necessarily stellar (around 1%)
So I feel like the likelyhood of it happening is kinda low :/ (even though it ended open-ended!)

But on the bright side, at least Signal's ratings were really high--so there might be a better chance...

I don't really care for Liar Game (the show never interested or impressed me) but.... Liar Game was directed by Kim HingSun and directed by Ryu YongJae whilst Signal was directed by Kim WonSeok and written by Kim EunHee, so I don't don't see why one has to be prepared and made before the other when nothing overlaps and both can be made at the same time.

i think signal season 2 is gonna happen, whether or not they get all 3 cast onboard. its a good investment than producing a new drama all together. it already has a solid fanbase so they wouldn't have any problem promoting it. it'll bring in money even if the story gets lost in the mountains halfway. i hope they feature more low-profile cases that needs public attention.

choi won-young is such a good actor. but i still get reminded of his bed scenes in sex is zero. hilarious o.o

i came in late so i don't know what the fuss was about ha yeon joo and ha yeon soo. i'm pretty sure it can't be ha yeon soo cause she looks like a kid, moreso next to lee jin-wook.

when ahn jae-hyun's dating news broke, i thought it was for promotion. but they look happy anyway so ...

Signal, Season 2? All I can say after watching the finale is hell yeah, we better get more!!! It needs one. It deserves one. And, luckily, when dramas are as well-received as Signal, Tvn actually has a way of making second seasons happen. And while usually a season 2 of a good show would make me nervous, the writer and PD both managed to simultaneously satisfy me with the ending and leave me wanting more so a second season actually seems necessary rather than forced. Here's to hoping they pull it off!

Signal is easily the best show of 2016. And it will be very difficult to kick it off the throne.

I actually thought, after hearing rumblings of a season 2 for Signal, that it would be hard to do so or maybe with a whole different set up but same concept. However after watching the finale, I can totally understand why and there are sooo much that they can do with it. Some of the knetz suggestions in Naver were awesome as well. I am just so happy for the entire team behind this amazing drama and can't wait for their future projects. And to think I almost skipped this because I wasn't really in the mood for some supernatural procedural lol!

As for Signal, it defenetly is laying up for a second season, as it had an open ending and not everything had been resolved.
