News bites: December 20, 2015

Kim Nam-joo, Lee Min-ho

  • War of Roses has lured Kim Nam-joo (You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly) back to dramaland after a four-year hiatus. Her character was born into a wealthy family and previously never wanted for anything, but she’ll struggle after marrying a doctor who doesn’t earn much income. For her family, she’ll deny her inbred taste for the finer things in life. A remake of the Chinese novel Chinese-Style Divorce, Joo Chan-ok (Fated to Love You) will pen the adaptation, while Yoo Hyun-ki (Unkind Women) will direct. KBS has yet to determine the timeslot/format for the show. [Joongang]
  • At a recent promotional event for Ferrero Rocher in Taipei, Taiwan, Lee Min-ho (he was commissioned as the chocolate brand’s first Asian model beginning in October) greeted his fans and talked about his upcoming work, saying, “Bounty Hunters was my first [global] project so the experience itself was new to me.” The movie, which also stars Wallace Chung and Tiffany Tang, hits theaters in 2016. [Dong A]

  • Namgoong Min, Lee Yeol-eum

  • Yay for Namgoong Min (Remember–Son’s War) — he’s been cast as the lead in Only One Love Like You, the 16-episode drama special from TV Chosun that’s also cast Kevin and Eli (of U-KISS) and singer Kangnam. Namgoong is a malicious and self-centered top star (and chaebol heir, of course), who has a tender and affectionate side. Lee Yeol-eum (Village: Secret of Achiara) has been cast as the lead opposite him (good for her, it’s barely been two years since the 19-year-old’s debut) and will play a modern-day Candy, doggedly pursuing her dreams. Her character’s nicknamed the “queen of part-time jobs,” and her bright smile will hide the pain caused by her first love. Only One Love Like You will air in the first half of 2016. [Sports Chosun 1, 2]
  • If this were a real pairing, dem babies would have some serious cheekbones: Kim Jae-wook (Age of Feeling) will play a Japanese nobleman and Sohn Ye-jin’s husband in Princess Deokhye. Theirs is a marriage of convenience while Park Hae-il is the real hero, but that doesn’t stop me from fantasizing about Kim-Sohn offspring. [Osen]

  • Kim Jae-wook, Sandara Park, Jeon No-min

  • Cutie Sandara Park — girl’s been busy; she’s been in one, twothree web dramas this year — will make a guest appearance on One More Happy Ending. I guess the more the merrier when it comes to Jang Nara and Yoo Inna’s former girl group: Park joins them as a popular ex-bandmate and currently successful actress. One More Happy Ending premieres January 20 on MBC. [Xports News]
  • Jeon No-min (Six Flying Dragons) has been cast in tvN’s Memory as a brilliant lawyer. He’s the son of the law firm’s founding partner and the man who initially recruited Lee Sung-min into the practice, but they’ll be pitted against each other during Lee’s final days. The Friday-Saturday drama will begin airing in March. [Maeil Economy]

  • Wang Bit-na, Im Soo-hyang, Shin Hye-sun

  • Casting news abounds for upcoming weekend drama Five Kids, which has secured a lead in Ahn Jae-wook (Light and Shadow). An offer is out to Wang Bit-na to play a frenemy who steals the lead’s husband. If she takes the job, this will be her first project since giving birth to her second child in March. Im Soo-hyang (Age of Feeling) and Shin Hye-sun (She Was Pretty, Oh My Ghostess) are confirmed and will play Ahn’s sister-in-law and younger sister, respectively. About single moms and single dads finding love again, the warm and cheerful family comedy will follow Please Mom on KBS in February 2016. [TV Report 1, 2]
  • Yoo Joon-sang (Heard It Through The Grapevine) is confirmed for tvN’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama Pied Piper. He’s a persuasive and confident newsman, beloved as the nation’s anchor, but when the cameras stop rolling he’ll obsess over viewership ratings. He’ll play opposite Shin Ha-kyun’s genius negotiatior in the drama by the writing/directing duo behind Liar Game, and Pied Piper will premiere in 2016. [Xports News]

the age gap between both is 18 years actually. Namgoong Min born in 1978, while the girl is 1996. it really is kinda weird with the big age gap, but the 18 years age different doesn't look that obvious when I saw their picture together (I mean, cmon, I bet most people who don't know him would believe it if I told them that NGM is 28yo)

and I think they will make NGM play as someone in his late 20s, while the girl will be in his early 20s

NAMGOONG MIN IS 37 YEARS OLD?? I've seen him in both Girl Who Sees Smells and Can You Hear My Heart and had NO idea. I totally thought he was in his late 20s. Woahhhh.

Namgoong Min looks really young for his age IMO... but I was super skeeved out by Uhm Jung Hwa - Park Seo Joon so maybe I'll feel the same about this pairing as well.

Regardless of the age gap, they're both adults so I have no issue and do not care.

Yoo Joon-sang was beyond flawless in Heard It Through the Grapevine, he and Yoo Ho-jung both deserve all the awards for their portrayal of two terrible people in a marriage of convenience that still somehow works on mutual loyalty. The drama did a pretty gutsy thing by making them the central couple, even though their characters were awful and absurd people they were interesting.

And I will never get over Yoo Joon-sang's line deliveries, they sounded straight out of a sageuk and perfect for Grapevine, which I've seen commenters on OT describing as a neo-sageuk.

Neo-sageuk, that will be a new thing, right?
Meanwhile sageuk these days keeps having modern delivery that was unheard of few years ago.

I love Yoo Joon Sang and Yoo Ho Jung together in HITTG!! They're such a perfect pair of snobbish rich parents. I miss their characters' antics...

I thought Lee Min Ho will comeback to dramaland.. Hmm.. he does take his time while this year probably his last before MS.
Love the idea of Kim Jae Wook-Son Ye Jin couple, even if Park Hae Il is the hero. Just please let Jae Wook has enough screentime! I miss watching him in something good! :D

A bit sad that they didn't with a Japanese actor in the role of a Japanese prince but at least Kim Jae Wook speaks fluent Japanese (basically as good as a native speaker which is a rarity with all the Korean actors who say they "speak Japanese".)
I wonder are they going even to try and film in Japan and use Japanese extras.

He's one of my sweethearts due to his part in Dirty Carnival and the courage to be in Ki Duk Kim's Bad Guy (one of my favourites), and that's not exactly true. He was the lead in Unemployed and Wild Chives with the known results. He seems to be cursed with seemingly promising projects that end up horribly. Even his second lead in Secret Hotel turned up sour and in I Need Romance 3 I never understood how he became from the confidant and friend to the guy who doesn't know you and you need to dress up for him while the young dude who hasn't seen you in years has the advantage. Inexplcable stuff. In a word, he must be (along with few others I dare not mention) one of the unluckiest actors I've ever seen and I truly hope his luck'd change.

+1, @korini! Well said!
Kdramaland owes the man a decent role and a good leading lady (someone who can act and, at the same time, be around his age. How difficult must THAT be?). In TGWSS had a couple of amazing scenes with Yoon Seo-jin which displayed his (and her, tbh) acting skills. He desperately needs a good project right now.

Yes, but who the heck is the lead for Five Kids? I don't think the writeups here on DB have mentioned Shim Yi-young already, haha.

Meanwhile, Wang Bit-na is relegated to her usual antagonist role, sigh. Maybe, there's some hope she can be utilized better by the writer (the one who did the I Need Romance series).

I am so excited for the new drama with Namgoong Min and Lee Yeul-Eum. There is already a potential page on Viki under the name "One and Only You."

Please follow the Viki Channel and also submit their title request form:

I am also super excited for Kim Jae-Wook being cast in Princess Deokhye. Will be looking forward to it.

Jeon No-min cast in Memory. Wonderful news!

Will certainly be looking forward to Five Kids because of Anh Jae-Wook , although it does not sound like my cuppa. I hope scriptwriter is good.

Pied Piper is from the writing/directing team behind Liar Game? I think I just discovered my drama crack for 2016! I loved LG so much, and the the synopsis for Piper sounds so interesting. Also Namgoong Min as a lead in a Rom-com is just the best. I love him in those kinds of dramas more than anything. Also, as a U-Kiss fan, I'm looking forward to seeing Kevin and Eli in a drama. And Five Kids sounds interesting too.To bad Lee Min-ho is doing another movie. I miss him on my computer screen. ?
