Lee Hee-joon up to play Jang Hyuk’s rival in Beautiful Mind

Well, he may be playing someone else’s rival if Jang Hyuk (Master of Trade—Inn 2015) passes on this drama too, but let’s be optimistic that Beautiful Mind will land itself a leading man this time around. Maybe it’ll have a lucky day and land a second lead as well, because an offer is currently out to Lee Hee-joon (Yoo-na’s Street) to co-star.

The new KBS Monday-Tuesday drama comes from the writer of Sungkyunkwan Scandal and the PD of Dream High 2, and tells the story of a genius psychopath neurosurgeon with a frontal lobe injury that prevents him from feeling emotions. He gets caught up in a mysterious case when his patients start dying off, and as he gets embroiled in the mystery, he’ll also find love and regain his humanity.

Jang Hyuk is considering the lead character, a beautiful but cold surgeon who’s never felt love, compassion, or happiness before. Lee Hee-joon is up for the part of his rival surgeon at the hospital, a kind, good-hearted doctor with a strong sense of justice. Lol, why does it sound like the hero and rival have swapped places in this drama? I guess when you’re the rival to an unfeeling genius, you come off as the better man.

I really like Lee Hee-joon playing the sweet boy-next-door type (so, more Yoo-na’s Street or You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, less Jeon Woo-chi), but he’s capable of playing a sharper antagonist if the role should call for it. He may just be the nice guy foil to Jang Hyuk’s cold hero, but if this show is really going to be a mystery more than a medical drama (I really hope so), I officially suspect everyone.

Beautiful Mind follows Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho in May.

So far this drama's not sounding very PC as far as mental illness goes...

How so? Joo Won's character in Good Doctor was childish, not devoid of emotions, and Lee Jong-Suk's character in Doctor Strange didn't have any glaring mental health issues.

I liked him in Yoona's Street (he's the main lead there, right?) I watched Signal thinking the main lead was him, thought so for like 5 episodes until I realized it was another guy looool.

Would it be too much if I hoped that Jang Nara signed on this one?

I mean, even if this drama becomes a hot mess, I could force myself to watch it just to see Jang-Jang couple in action again.

Man can dream...
