Ghost vs. exorcist in Bring It On, Ghost

Well, the more I see Kim So-hyun kicking Taecyeon’s ass, the more Bring It On, Ghost appeals to me. I mean, I’m not going into this expecting My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho levels of cuteness, but it does remind me of that kind of relationship, where the girl’s got all the power and she’s not afraid to instill a little fear to keep it that way.

The tvN horror comedy stars Taecyeon as a college student who works a part-time job as an exorcist, expelling other people’s ghosts for a fee since he can see and touch them. His goal is to earn enough money to get rid of his ghost-seeing abilities (by removing his eyeballs, gack), because despite not being afraid of ghosts by now, he still hates that he can see them.

Kim So-hyun plays a high school senior who turned into a ghost because she died the day before her college entrance exam, after doing nothing else her whole life but prepare for that one test. Well, that would piss me off too. She’s the one ghost that out-fights Taecyeon and won’t be chased away, and she takes up residence in his house and becomes his ghost-expelling partner, despite being a ghost herself.

The newest teaser is a parody of Ju-on: The Grudge, with Taecyeon waking up to a ghost crawling under his sheets (shudder). After being startled awake, he actually yawns and looks bored by the haunting, giving the ghost a good wallop, with Kim So-hyun joining in to help. The webtoon is more violent but similarly irreverent and comical about its horror elements, so I’m taking it as a good sign that the drama will follow suit. I don’t get the part where he fails to high-five her and mutters, “Oh, you’re a ghost,” since he can touch ghosts, but maybe she’s just vaporizing to mess with him.

Bring It On, Ghost premieres July 11, following Oh Hae-young Again.

I feel bad for both of them. There's no way they can follow up OHYA's stupendous ratings without constantly being referred to as doing "just ok" or "normal" even if they have above typical TvN ratings. I just don't think it's possible this show will crack 5% at best.

They don't need to, different show, different actors, different setup. I'd be worried about being compared to Oh My Ghost if I really had to compare. As for Oh Hae Young, that show has lost steam even with the stellar cast and pretty much near flawless writing, they really didn't need to take that extension.

City Hall didn't get dragged for me at all. The only drama that I finished and I wasn't left wondering what happened after it ended (this didn't have an extension). Yep, they're dramas out there that is solid to the end. Just gotta search. It can be done.

I'm sure they exist, but I'm a pretty impatient person ?
If I'm gonna finish a rom com, I have to watch it as it airing. Cause if I try to marathon it I'll inevitably get frustrated with the obligatory angst/separation in the later half of the season and just read recaps so I can skip to the end. I don't have this problem with other genres.

0

I love City Hall! Any other good rom com recommendations? I've come to terms that I won't venture into BoF given the reviews (of it being a hot mess) I've seen over the years. :)

0

@ peach.Lol, "obligatory angst/separation in the later half of the season" I can understand that. I just skip those scenes. It's honestly tiring. Weirdly enough I do better marathoning because it helps me to just skip episodes as I go along.

0

@sheesh, try Dalja's Spring. Smartly written, and the leads had great chemistry. I also like Love & Marriage (the scandal involving Kim Min-hee notwithstanding, since this happened way after). I assume you've seen My Name is Kim Sam Soon?

0

@Sheesh
1.My lovely kim sam sun (LAUGHTER, just LAUGHTER!!!)
2. Lovers (Dimples, just DIMPLES.)
3. Jdrama. My boss my hero (I cried. Too funny)
4. Beautiful Gong Shim (Remind me of my early drama days. Funny stuff right here)
5. Fated to love you K version
6. Master's sun
7. Scent of a Woman (not completely a rom- com)

0

@sheesh

A smattering of my favorite rom-coms:

- Marriage Not Dating
- You From Another Star
- Oh My Ghostess
- Many of the Hong Sisters rom-coms in their heyday: My Girl, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, You're Beautiful, The Greatest Love
- Answer Me 1997
- Coffee Prince Store #1
- The King 2 Hearts
- Queen In-Hyun's Man
- Ho-gu's Love
- Twenty Again
- Can I count Healer?

... Dang, I've watched more rom-coms than I thought.

0

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
Did Tru2u mention Fated to love you as a drama that did NOT slow down in its second half? ROOOTTTTFFFFFLLLLLLLL! Now, I cannot trust her judgement anymore... because to me, that drama SUNK SO LOW INTO ANGSTVILLE, it suffocated and choked. I never even finished it. Lol, if you are looking for a drama that avoid angst, avoid fated to love you!

0

@Eerinmide Go Go. LOL???!!! True, I must admit that did slow down when the half was finished (the first arc). I was focusing on the Rom-Comedy of the drama (the first half). But to be fair it was following a planned out script since it was a remake. And to change it would have caused problems. I watch the original way back when I started watching dramas and dropped it because it got mighty slow and repetitive (which ALWAYS seems to happen in Taiwanese Drama, well maybe to me). I knew what was coming and how the writers wanted to allow character development for the lead female. I wanted them to change the script, but like I said that would have changed the original. Also I never once ask anyone to trust my drama of choice. It was only recommendation I threw out because of brevity of time when I responded. Mongoose named some I would NEVER recommend since I didn't like them. But I left it at that. To permit Sheesh to try them since each individual have different taste in dramas. Anyways, thanks for reading my comment and responding. I actually like conversing with people who gave different opinions. Take care!!☺☺????????

"Near flawless writing"?

The writing is average, if that.

OHYA is worth a watch solely due to Seo Hyun-jin's performance.

Too bad the writing (esp. for the other characters) is not up to snuff.

Really wanted to like the character of Ye Ji-won since it started off being really quirky (as the boss).

But the last thing OHYA needed was another character in a depression/state of anguish over a lost love and YJW getting totally drunk off her gourd every night was stupid and annoying (the writer tried to make it humorous and failed) and doesn't mesh w/ YJW seemingly being a very competent director at the company (a person who gets that s**t-faced every night wouldn't be able to do her job right).

And then her character gets tied up w/ the "playboy" lawyer (like we couldn't see that coming a mile away) - who is another badly written, one-note character - and their story-line (despite the drama of the pregnancy) holds little interest.

Same goes for the brother and his GF and even OHY#1's best bud, goes bizzarro - making the move on the struggling screenwriter brother.

Only 2 supporting characters who aren't stupid or annoying are OHY#1's parents - but they really don't have anything else going on besides worrying about their daughter.

0

Are we watching the same drama? Imo Ohy is one of the best written drama this year. One of the most surprising drama in the half of this year. The only drama that is not webtoon based and tvn francised, got in the top five most watched drama on tvn channel.

OHYA is filled w/ tropes (done non-imaginatively) w/ the supporting characters badly written and just plain annoying and stupid.

W/o Seo Hyun-jin's winning performance, OHYA would be a complete mess.

Can you think of a great (original) scene or memorable dialogue?

Heck, romcoms like "My Princess" which had its flaws w/ the underlying story - had much better dialogue and scenes btwn the lead couple.

0

Just b/c it's popular doesn't mean that the writing is any good.

See "Secret Garden," DotS, BoF, "The Heirs", etc.

Even the writing for MLftS was only decent (when it comes to soap oriented K-dramas).

Agreed about OHYA

We won'the know until we see it, it's not like anyone was expecting great ratings for OHYA. And anyway, that show has lost its steam and is losing ratings each week. It's better to leave people hubgry, desperate, and wishing for more than to drag things until they're bored. This is especially true for romcoms.

Ohy is one of top five most watched drama on tvn channel.to think that their actual target was to surpass 3% in tv view rates, the drama is surprisingly a hit in the tv view rates. Besides the current rating is Still higher than others on that time slot. Not to mention that Ohy is the 1st drama to broke 8% and 9% on view rates for 11pm slot kdrama on cable channel. Just look at other drama that currently airing on cable channels these days, to surpass 6% is hard even the timeslot didn't help much.

They haven't actually talked about the romance a lot in any of the press releases, would it be too optimistic for me to hope that the extent of it is just a one-sided crush on KSH's part? Or maybe none at all? This looks like it could serve as just a straight comedy.

I wanna watch KSH kick ass without having to feel icky about the rest of it.

I think it's a good thing that people question large age gaps in dramas, but I'm still surprised by how intense people are about it. Unfortunately, I think I've grown to used to it to really care much anymore. I don't know of a popular entertainment industry that doesn't use them, currently or in the past.

Large age gaps where one party is underage and the other isn't is a whole different story than age gap between adults. Also just because it's prevalent doesn't make it right, it just means you are desensitized. I won't go into it here but there's ALOT of really messed up things that happen in entertainment industries that are swept under the rug or just tolerated by public because they don't understand how bad things can be behind the scenes.

I think people are extra angry because along with the age gap and Kim SoHyun being underage, his acting is terrible.

I can't name a single male actor of his seniority whose acting is this bad and still getting leading roles. You can dislike the comments section, but why should we keep giving him chances when every time his acting is so poor? Even his minor costar was better than him.

He really did sign up to the role. I am sick of seeing a baby minor like So Hyun get constantly cast to play love interests with actors who are so, so much older. It's disgusting. Honestly lost respect for Taecyeon, too. He could have refused the part on the basis that acting as lovers with a young girl like her is just plain wrong, given the fact that he's 27 and she's fricking 17. Ugh.

Yeah I really judge him for taking this role when he has no acting skills and is 11 years older compared to the minor who confirmed her lead role first.

Why can't more idols be like Hyuna, she turned down Chun Woo Hee role in The Wailing because she knew she lacked acting experience and skill. At least Hyuna is humble and knows her limits, such a change from these greedy unskilled acting idols who can't act but take lead roles anyway.
