More potential roommates for JTBC’s Age of Youth

Han Ye-ri, Sunny
Han Seung-yeon, Ryu Hwa-young

JTBC’s new campus sharehouse drama Age of Youth has three more potential roommates alongside Han Ye-ri (Six Flying Dragons), who is still considering the offer to headline. Girls’ Generation’s Sunny, Kara’s Han Seung-yeon (The Racer, Jang Bori Is Here), and Ryu Hwa-young (Come Back, Ajusshi; Ex-Girlfriend Club) are all in contention to join the drama, described as an upbeat story about five very different women living together in one house.

The new Friday-Saturday drama comes from thoughtful writer Park Yeon-sun of Wild Romance, White Christmas, and Alone in Love, and the scripts are said to already be complete for the 12-episode series. Directing is PD Lee Tae-gon of Beloved Eun-dong, Your Neighbor’s Wife, and Dowager Queen Insoo.

It’s a light, cheerful drama about five women who differ in appearance, personality, major, taste in men, and relationship style. They’re all college students living under one roof, and through them, the show will explore a wide range of relatable issues that concern contemporary women, like dating, sex, dieting, living with roommates, and other interpersonal relationships. It sounds promising, especially with the focus on women.

Nobody’s been confirmed for the drama, but all four actresses are considering favorably, and hopefully Han Ye-ri will sign on and anchor the cast. I don’t really know what to expect from Sunny, since I’ve only ever seen her do variety shows. She’s bubbly and adorable, but that doesn’t always translate into good acting. Han Seung-yeon has at least had a decent amount of experience doing small roles or web dramas and drama specials; and Ryu Hwa-young is a relative newcomer, but she’s been good in all the supporting roles she’s had so far, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of her. I could really use a lighthearted I Need Romance-type of drama, especially if there’s some good chemistry among the girlfriends.

Age of Youth will follow Mirror of the Witch on Fridays and Saturdays beginning in July.

I remember Ryu Hwa-young from Come Back, Ajusshi and everyone in the Viki timed comments said she looks like Park Shin-Hye and she does lol

I prefer Ryu HwaYoung.

Why do people need to compare them like that?

That's how people get the Oh-HaeYoung-syndrome.

I'm sorry for starting this. I didn't mean to compare them. I was just stating the first time I saw her in a drama.

I don't find anything wrong with "X looks like Y". Sometimes, there's something about X that reminds you of Y that others don't notice.

I'm just wary when it leads to "but X is prettier" "no, Y has fairer skin" because then the beanies start sounding like those 90s ads about laundry detergent with Brand X vs Z and that's weird, beanies. Pls don't do that.

Kehinde, you are not wrong here because you just stated that they are look alike. Things got heat up when someone started the "who is prettier" things.

@mary, could not agree more.

Me, I'm just totally pleased at the premise of the drama. Reminds me of Uni and just how filled with humor, tension, romantic advice and butting of heads it all was. Plus, all those friendships that lasted, even though most of them were the roommates I loved to hate. JTBC has been pulling off really interesting dramas of late.

The drama is about 5 college students living under one roof. Being girl group members who had significant experience training with and living with fellow females, I can see why the writer is going along with this cast.

jTBC need to reopen other timeslot to against tvN. tvN rude cable drama too much.
Their acting is good? This is 19+ drama? Recently I watch The Lover, it's really good and funny too. But just one month to air first ep, maybe this is a drama-created-for-fill-the-timeslot.
This drama will against The Good Wife. I don't know which is better. Maybe I need to watch first ep of 2 dramas.

The Good Wife has the best cast. It has Chungmuro's best- Jeon Do-Yeon. Add Kim Seo-Hyung and Yoo Ji-Tae and that's a solid cast right there. Even with a mediocre script, you can count on these actors to do more than they are given.

Come on jTBC, you can do better than the big 3. The next line up is 3 idol actresses? *sigh* Not even the best of them or close.

I'm glad Han Ye-ri hasn't confirmed yet.

Ryu Hwa-young is actually quite a good actress, but the other two.... let's just say this is literally a glass half full situation if Han Ye-ri signs up, because we'll be getting two decent cast members.

I don't have much patient for terrible idol actors with the likes of Han Seung-yeon. It's such a turn off.

There are plenty of talented actresses in their 20s who can do this but they are shut out because these idols are much more popular.

Praying that it is either HYR accepts but the two idols not accepting OR the other way around.

Agree with pogo, Ryu Hwa Young is quite good in playing supporting roles before but the other two idols better do more supporting roles.

Indeed. I wonder if Han Ye-ri is receiving flashing neon lights - blaring "abandon ship" actually more like, "do not board this ship. Abort, ABORT, ABOORTTTTTT NOW!!!!

Maybe Mirror of the Witch sucked all the budget for this year dramas in JTPC that they have to choose unexperianced actress, i like the plot it's fresh but I wished they would've cast more known and talented actress

Oh, this will be against The Good Wife? Ok, then no need to waste money on a better (read more experienced) cast since we all know what everyone's watching in SK Fr-Sa. ;-)

White Christmas had all super green, mostly model actors, and the writing and directing was able to elevate their performances.

Park Yeon-sun had her reasons for picking the actors she did for White Christmas, so I have trust that she has her reasons for scouting these actresses. As long as the directing is good as well, I have faith in this drama.

So they're considering different roles each, right? I'd rather have Ryu Hyeyoung because imo she has stronger acting skills than the two. It's just that their image kinda overlaps. I don't see the three of them being very different from each other. We'll see how it turns out.

urghhh.. Can they leave out all those idol gals? One of them is more than enough,
Why do they constantly feel the need to destroy potentially good drama with idols who cannot act?

That's your premise right there. A drama fan who tricks people into giving up their kidneys for better dramas.

Why so negative? Well, I don't know about Han Seung Yeon but we've never even seen Sunny act. Give her a chance, who knows she might be decent at it? Besides with an ensemble cast I doubt she'd have to do any heavy lifting.

I just did a re-watch of Ex-Girlfriend Club and have been wanting to see Ryu Hwayoung in something again. She has great chemistry with other actresses so I'd love to see her in that type of situation again. If her and Han Ye Ri sign on, I'm in.
