Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 5-11, 2016

There weren’t any surprises for our Big 3 broadcasting networks this week, as the shows that have proved to be dominant in their respective time slots, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and Legend of the Blue Sea, continued to dominate. With Romantic Doctor, though, it not only managed to hang on to its 20%, but actually improved it, netting 22.8% this week. That’s a series high for a show that’s about doctors being doctors, and I have to admit to not quite understanding what about the show makes it a must-see each week, despite the fact that I’m one of the people tuning in.

Over in the middle of the week, Legend of the Blue Sea still continues to perform at peak ratings efficiency, even though it seems like it may not reach 20% anytime soon. At least it’s not dropping any viewers, even though it didn’t seem to add any this week, either. It’s heartening to see Oh My Geum-bi and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju still performing admirably despite the stiff competition, since both are equally deserving of viewers’ attention.

The big jump this week happened with The Lonely Shining Goblin, which rose from an already-impressive 7.9% last week to a really impressive 12.5%. It dropped a point for its even episode, but 11.4% for a cable network is still considered an unqualified success. I love the show myself, but good grief, those are some long episodes. But I guess you can’t fix what isn’t broken, even though I kind of wish they would.

It’s KES, it’s not worth it to expect Too much from her. Predictably, there’ll be male lead angst (albeit swoon-worthy ’cause Gong Yoo), cheesy lines and mooore man pain. Oh and of course a badly written female character, who the fandom will tear apart b/c she’s supposedly too whiny/annoying/cries too much *sigh*... Hope that Goblin won’t go there, DotS was a bit more promising on the female character part.
I’m still trying to forget the injustices done to the female lead of Heirs, and the awful bandwagon hate towards the female character...

Dude Heirs was a mess and the characters in my opinion eraned every bit of the harsh criticism it got expect for the overzealous fans being nasty about the leading lady or male lead for personal reasons. I sure do hope Goblin doesn't go that route. The problem with longer episodes is that you get fillers that you'll eventually grow very tired of and that you'll run out possible plot. Also the writers Achilles heel is not being able to deliver conflict and/or a well written villain. So I am optimistic yet scared for the show still after 4 episodes.

Yeah but both Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook are both really good, savvy actors. And frankly they could trash the scripts and improv their way through the next 12 episodes if they had to.

Nigeru wa haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu - We Married as a job hit 16.9% Continuous rise.

Sweet Stranger and Me is done for. I don't think there was enough material for even 12 episodes.
Night Light is hanging around 5% - slow progress and too much non-committed faceoff of characters
I watch Doctor Kim every week and find it good entertainment but nothing more. 10episodes gone and story is still stuck in in its 1st week of affairs.
Fair Lady Geum-Bi is strong force than Bok-ju. Week after week this is confirmed by ratings.
I am watching Blue Sea and its same 1 hour futile watch without much substance.

Grim and Goblin are fun as a pair but 1 hour 15min+ episodes are just too much.

Father i'll take care of you = Makjang already in motion. Though, I prefer it over others.

Kdramas likes to waste audiences time - Sweet Stranger,Goblin,Entourage add Night Light too.

I personally don't mind long episodes so long as the drama is good. Now trying to sit through a long episode while disliking a drama? That's torture.

I'd rather that they keep the length of the episodes if they need to rather than try and follow Legend of the Blue Sea's footsteps (get rid of too much for the sake of meeting the 1 h mark only to have viewers complain about the missing chunks of information and choppy editing).

Less is not always more.

So happy that Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Goblin are doing better! I love them both dearly. Romantic Doctor still continues to be a dropped drama for me. I agree with you that I don't understand the high ratings, though it's starting to make me question if I should get back into it after all (I stopped watching somewhere around episode 5/6).

I'm glad to see Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo's ratings going up. I saw some comments saying that it's nothing new, but somehow I feel it's very fresh. I also think the drama has been doing a good job on tackling the weight and mental illness issues, which is wonderful considering how uplifting and lighthearted the drama is; it presents you topics and makes you think.

Required fields are marked *

It's weird that people don't find WF new and fresh. It's realistic and shows campus life appropriately. It is my number one drama for the week. Even goblin comes second and these two are the only ones I think are worth watching right now. I hope if not ratings they at least get the critical acclaim so that writers don't stop making such stories.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Second this.

I found this drama fresh and realistic. Also easy to understand without crazy antagonist who wants to kill somebody. Our 2nd female lead, the ex-gf is just a human being.
This drama also does not have what kdrama usually have. Chaebol. So this one looks nice. Not everyone in this world should have a loveline with chaebol hahaha

My other fave is goblin. The characters are also fresh. KGE's character is not a mellow female lead. Fresh and fun to watch.

I watch romantic doctor and as someone who works at hospital, i think the reason people keep watching it bcuz it's beautiful to see doctors trying to help others. Looking at how they try their best for others, that's so nice and warm.

Literally watching blue sea for minho. He looks freaking good. Jjh reminds ne of her previous character. Nothing new. The story, meh. Makjang.

But yeah, WF and goblin are my numero uno!

I actually don't mind the longer episodes in Goblin. It's only about 20-30 minutes longer than an average episode and still keeps its own flow the whole time. Not to mention, I'm really enjoying the show, so I always enjoy seeing more of the characters.

Required fields are marked *

I completely agree. For me, the time flies right by, so I've struggled to understand what everyone's complaining about. I mean, for supposed addicts, what's a half hour more when you're already watching 6+ hours a day? In fact, I didn't even realize it was running longer until everyone started pointing it out!

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I also only noticed the episodes were longer because of the complaining on here. I'm one of those people that keeps looking at the time hoping it doesn't end soon because it's so good lol. If the drama is good on all aspects then I don't mind how long it is. If it sucks, 40 min to an hour seems like an eternity.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I certainly don't mind longer-than-usual Goblin episodes. Time flies and I don't even want the episode to stop. This drama is my new crack! And I rarely sing praises for KES drama.
Anyway if I compare Goblin with other longer tvn shows like Reply 1994/Reply 1998, I definitely didn't think Goblin is too long for a drama, but I did think Reply 1994/1998 seemed so long. So in the end it's a matter of perspective. Even 30 minutes/episode could be a torture if we dislike the drama.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I feel that extra 15-20mins. It get's into movie length territory. For me it's somewhat similar to the difference between a 35 min show and an hour long show. I have yet to watch out an episode of Goblin in one sitting. I don't even think I could binge on this show in any capacity for that matter. Having said all of this, maybe it will take some getting used to. We'll see. The show is awesome btw. Happy to see Gong Yoo back to form on the small screen.

I agree, but it gets more complicated if we think about "Doctors" in the same timeslot before, because the plot plus acting was a little crappy in that one.

I love RDTK but I think the situtation would be different if it was on air at the same time of "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds" for example.

Well, people said that Jang Hyuk + Park So Dam are better actors than Kim Rae Won + Park Shin Hye (which I respectfully disagree, because it all boils down to preference), but Doctors and that other drama (Monster?) were both getting better ratings since episode 1. Sometimes you just can’t explain certain things or there are no rational explanations, they just happen to happen.

0

Required fields are marked *

I also don't know why RDTK is doing so well, but I watch and like the show and the actors in it so I'm not complaining. I mean, it's better than LoTBS in my opinion, but at least for that show I understand that it's got super popular actors in it.

Good and on point acting aside from a humanistic theme I guess? Some people dislike medical dramas, especially the humanistic ones, but one can’t deny that people like humanistic themes so that’ll probably explain the ratings

0

Medical drama -humanistic theme.,maybe? and the other two drama also don't have any popular hallyu stars / the theme is not everyone's taste (Night Light) so it helps with the high rating as well.

There's a strange, unexplainable charm to RDTK that gets me tuning in each week. It doesn't particularly stand out in any aspect but does many things decently in that it has a good ensemble of interesting and entertaining characters, compelling storyline and the draw for me is also its exploration of very real and relevant ethical issues. The issues it raises about putting lives about ahead of doing a good job or the best job is very personally relevant to my work in education as well so I am liking that. There hasn't been a really good show exploring teachers ' lives in a school and the complex issues they face, so I guess a medical show is the next best thing for that.

He may be famous in Korea but I don't know him. Because my country has a cable channel showing this show, he was being asked for an interview in the newspapers. But he was so full of himself. Reporter said people are calling him the Korean Chow Yun Fatt. But he said he did not watch Chow's movies but just know from his friends that Chow Yun Fatt is a famous actor. Even Hollywood knows who is Chow Yun Fatt. How can he not know since he is not so young himself and a "well known actor". Even if this doctor show is so nice(which i don't think so), I will still not watch it because this actor is too proud. I prefer to watch shows with humble actors even if the acting is lousy.

Dang, I should go to jail then because I've never watched a single Chow Yun Fatt movie/drama evet before too. I also don't know the guy except that he's famous from what I hear from friends.

No matter how famous a person is, there will always be someone in the world who won't recognise him/her. Yes, even a famous actor who's not even from the same country may not recognise him. Doesn't mean that he's proud.

0

Thanks for this, so true although I do watch the old guy's movies and adore him it doesn't make someone else proud for not knowing him or watching his movies. this whole thing remindes me of the attacks on Shaeline Woodley when she was asked her favourite Kylie Jenner face and had no idea who that was people called her proud and arrogant like knowing a celebrity albeit a talented one in this case is the yardstick for humility.

I thought chow Yun Fatt was very popular in Korea last time? They even filmed a movie "A Better Tomorrow" based on the HK movie. It just shows that celebrities must be very careful about what they say.

I so get you on this--well, I hope I do. There have been a good few dramas where I'm like, why do you like each other again? When did this happen? Then I have to go back and investigate.

Straightforward does not always equal less gratifying. That's one reason why I liked dramas like 1%, SKL, and Love O2O.

The only reason Our Gab Soon gets 16 is when it's in the later time slot when it has nothing to compete with otherwise it would be wasting away at a 10 rating. Main reason the unlikeable characters. They managed to create some of the most horrible characters I have seen for a weekend drama.

I don't think RDTK receiving high rating is something unacceptable, and I never enjoy medical drama before except Beautiful Mind. plus the competition are not strong enough. Night Light is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think is not that bad. It gives kinda similar vibes with Empire Of Gold although different setting and the casts in EOG are stronger.

Our Gabsoon will be extended to 60 episodes, honestly I hoped it will be shorter than 50 epi. i want Kim So Eun done with this drama soonest and get a short break before do next project who will give justice to her talent. Looks like she is facing the same thing like Baek Jin Hee in Geum Sa Wol. - poorly written character. What a waste of talents.

It was because of the impeachment that Goblin doubled its ratings. The competing daily dramas (including top-rating Shining Eun-soo on KBS1, and Jin Yi-han's low-rated drama Golden Pouch on MBC) were pre-empted by news and Solomon's Perjury's premiere was postponed by a week, which meant Goblin faced no competition on Friday.

I guess the drop is because regular programming returned on Saturday. It airs around the same time as Laurel Tree Tailors (24.1%, which is lower than the previous Saturdays without Goblin), Blow, Breeze (12.5%), and the earlier episode of Our Gap-soon (10.1%, lower than Goblin's rating).

There is magic in her writing, but her plots are very very thin and weak and I really think that multiple drawn out episodes are only going to emphasize that. I mean, even in episode 1 and 2, we already have people feeling the unneceasary stretch of basically drawn out scenes of the same thing.

Yeah, I agree that Goblin is great, the best I've seen from her (so far).

0

Actually I am really enjoying Kim Eun Sook's character as there's a real mix of pathos, pain, strength and resilience in her. I enjoy her journey in exploring and finding out her identity and truth and how she interacts with the supernatural world and finds more comfort in it than the real world. She may not have the star power of the other actors in the cast but she's doing a good job as her character is also being given a lot of meaty developments.

I actually like this style. I notice that a lot of viewers want the plot to be complex, move fast and have a lot of twist. I like KES dramas especially Goblin because it allows me to leave everything behind and enjoy the drama. Those "lingering" moments are a masterpiece on their own. They are so well made and directed that i want to stay in those moment forever. There is something about her dramas that is making me relax and happy.

There is no need to hate on her and call out for bot being creative. The backstory in most of dramas is the same. What is more important is to create characters You cheer for, moments You want to comeback to and present it in a way You can't take Your eyes from. It's only a TV show, it's not an indie movie, it's made for us to enjoy it and make us happy. KES is doing all those things for me in Goblin :)

And to be honest those 1,5 hour never felt shorter while watching drama :)

I am not saying that the technique is bad but they make every moment longer than what it should have been,
It's like seeing the rain in the umbrella fall 3 times and it looks identical,

it waste of time and clearly as a technique to make the drama longer than the material they have,
they can cut all those lingering looks every 5 minutes and all those unnecessary slow motion,
it's like dish that is overcooked and make you regret that you pay so much for its

I think it bothers people more if they

1) have other stuff to do, and are putting it off to watch the drama, or
2) have to recap it!

I don't have time to watch it so I'm only reading recaps, but I swear it's taking me forever to read the recaps, lol.

I'm watching Goblin and the Weightlifting fairy.

I've pretty much dropped the Man living in my house. I'm debating if I should continue the Legend of the Sea (LOBS). LOBS has the ingredients to be a great drama but...I feel it lacks "something". Surprisingly the I felt it in The Weightlifting Fairy.

I'm also watching the Romantic Doctor.

Could the something be chemistry between the leads? Cos that's what I'm asking myself. I like the saguek portion but not so much the contemporary. Though it got better from epi 6 onwards, I still find myself fast forwarding a lot of scenes and just relying on recaps to get the story.

I think it might be the modern day chemistry too. I can't seem to buy into the relationship at all. Many times I feel like I'm seeing Jun Ji Hyun and she seems a bit too old for LMH. I wanna like the story, but i don't feel intrigued by the lore or myth like Goblin has so far.

Same. The only dramas I really care about right now is WFKBJ and Goblin. I'm also watching Oh My Geum Bi but it's not the type of drama that one can get obsessed with. I can't seem to get myself to watch LOTBS despite being a fan of JJH. I guess I am just not that too enthusiastic seeing LMH playing LMH. What I mean by that is that I always see LMH in all of his characters. He doesn't immerse himself enough into the role for me to forget that he is LMH.

Yes, LOBS does have that feel of lacking something. I think the two leads are not hitting it off quite right. I don't feel the chemistry.

I think it's a great move that Goblin stole a momentum this week. Viewers got to catch a glimpse of the drama and prolly decided to stick around for more. I hope the ratings will stay above 10% which is remarkable for a cable tv standard. Fingers crossed it will break R88's ratings record too.
Glad to find my rebound drama after 1% of something ended.

Goblin is my new crack. I get goblined easily.

I am gonna start Weighlifting Fairy as most people give positive comments on it.

Solomon's Perjury sounds intriguing too. It is been a while since I saw Kim Hyun Soo in YWCFTS.

MBC this year has been more about making good content than ratings. Some of my favorite dramas this year are from MBC but they haven't even tried to compete for ratings like the other two channels so their shows were a little overlooked.

Even though I'm a fervent fan of RDTK and I'm super happy at the >20% ratings, I do understand why many people feel that it may not deserve such high ratings. Hence, I went to naver and checked the comments about RDTK after it was aired. The comments were generally positive and commentators were drawn by the touching plot lines e.g. the rape victims' husband/father, the grandmother with a DNR order, as well as rooting for the Doldam doctors and nurses to 'win'. I guess its a good drama to watch together as a family weekly instead of catching them online after it's aired, which explains the high viewership ratings.

Personally, I'm drawn to RDTK because I love the excellent acting, the rooting for the underdogs and the ethical issues that RDTK brought out. The characters are great and managed to get me emotionally invested in them for me to tune in weekly to watch them grow.

RDTK is a drama that is suitable to watch 2 episodes a week instead of binge watching it at one go. I guess if I'm going to binge watch it, I will definitely have lesser interest in the characters.

Maybe it's about time to realize even without popular stars in drama, rating will do well. The productions / tv stations need to realize this instead of putting actors with crappy acting as the main leads. of course the plot and the theme of the drama need to be well received if want to achieve high rating.

i am quite perplexed because this drama is not really popular internationally, honestly. Well maybe no popular stars -less hyped.

Noticed that RDTK doesn't get too much attention from DB readers based on the number of comments it gets for its recaps here. This is surprising in view of its high ratings in SK.

It's easy to sweep the show's achievements under the rug by saying its competitors are weak. But 22.8% is an achievement regardless. And if you noticed, they have maintained their 20% viewership for 3 episodes in a row now. There must be reasons for this.

In my view, the cast and directing for the show are pretty superb. The story is well paced to keep you gripped. So little hype but such great ratings. I think this goes to show that the majority is always silent. They just let the numbers do the talking.

Also, be happy that RDTK is not constantly being put down and at the same time, other shows of either from the same time slot or even from different days aren’t constantly being compared with RDTK by zealots/other fandoms. It’s relieving that ifans mostly have only wondered why RDTK is getting the high ratings.

hmmm RDTK got fewer comments on DB because DB readers possibly prefer to comment on shows with lower ratings yet great quality, imo.

Moreover, medical drama isn't everyone's cup of tea, I guess. I personally don't watch medical dramas if the casts aren't my biases.

I thought this show is internationally hyped, no?? Since some said that RDTK is like Korean's Grey Anatomy. However, I do agree that RDTK has been doing a great job!! They have less stars but the ratings are skyrocketing, even defeat LOBS.

Lower ratings and great quality? I think I know a drama or two that contradicts that statement. For example Signal final got 200+ comments while Moon Lovers got 1,200+.

I feel like shows that provoke comments usually contains

1) fanwar/shipping war
2) bad acting + a horde of comments that condemn/defend his/her
3)frustratingly or painfully to watch leads that make nonsensical decisions + another batch of comments that are puzzled with/justify it
4)puzzle or riddle that will be answered on the last episode of the show or two if you lucky (ex reply series)

Quality be damned, lol.

I had a very bad week that even the escapism offered by k-drama couldn't improve: i couldn't finish any episode that i started (including Tree with deep roots)

RDTK is the only exception: episode 10 kept me glued to my screen and i think the show deserves entirely its ratings if only for this episode.

I don't think RDTK's ratings success should simply be downplayed like that.

The show wasn't that hyped and it premiered with just a single digit rating : 9.5%. But its ratings manage to climb steadily over the episodes mostly because of words of mouths.

Osen via Naver : ‘Romantic Doctor’ fierce popularity, why do you go wild for doctor’s story

1. [+4080,-53] In addition to its story which is excellent, the acting ability of all actors of leading roles and supporting roles is just stunning… Han Suk Kyu really is Myeongbulheojeon* (*which mean that the fame / nickname /reputation one has is well deserved)

Yeah, I think maybe people aren't aware of how popular and well respected Han Suk Kyu is. Yoo Yeo Seok is reasonably popular, and Seo Hyun Jin just came off a big hit. Just because they aren't hallyu stars doesn't mean they aren't a big draw for the Korean audience. Although I personally didn't like the show, I can see its appeal. It's well paced and addictive.

Also 9.5% is pretty good for a premiere rating. For a show that wasn't that hyped, it started off well.

For newbie /younger generation (I mean probably people below 25 y o)/ not watching movies, they won't know who is Han Suk Kyu and how he was well respected in Korea.

But somehow I'm glad that when I saw comments esp international fans who don't know any of leading casts but love the show.

RDTK, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

I initially tuned in to RDTK because of Seo Hyun-Jin. Her acting grabbed me in my second Kdrama, THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG, and I've been a fan ever since. I hadn't seen any of the other cast members before, but have been impressed by the quality of the ensemble acting.

I used to watch a lot of American forensic medical shows like CSI, but never soap operas like GENERAL HOSPITAL. I tuned in to BEAUTIFUL MIND for another of my favorite actors, Jang Hyuk, because I knew that if anyone could succeed at conveying the emotions of a person who cannot read others' emotional cues, it would be him... and ended up loving another great ensemble cast of characters and the actors portraying them. Along with thought-provoking medical episodes.

In the case of RDTK, I appreciate a cast that's not full of a lot of pretty young idols without acting chops. Being a person of a certain age myself, I want to see folks onscreen who are on the far side of 40-50, just like in (my) real life. For a change, I enjoy being able to drool over handsome near-contemporaries instead of hotties young enough to be my (oh, horrors!) offspring or grandkids. The fact that most of these mature males look pretty natural is even better. As hard as it may be for young 'uns to grok, wrinkles laugh lines can be incredibly sexy... and 50 isn't old if you're a tree. Heck, some oak species don't hit their stride in acorn production until they reach the half-century mark, if you catch my drift...

RDTK gives my brain a workout. It also gives my heart a workout, especially with regard to ethical questions and matters of humanity. Some of the recent topics have prompted thoughtful discussions in the recap threads. I like that. Give me a story with substance that resonates with real life issues.

I'm not a big fan of corporate politics and evil chaebols, per se, but I'll put up with them if they serve as plot points in support of a bunch of underdogs trying to make the world a better place, while attempting to grow as human beings themselves.

First episode in and I ready love the feel of the Shining Goblin. It didn't feel too long at all.

Great acting and OK plot in Romantic teacher Kim, but for the love of dramas, will they ever learn to keep their fights and dramatic shouts outside the hospital ward and the ORs? Calm dooooown.

RDTK is boring. I dropped when I saw the medical scenes are repeating and silly. Despite too many shouting and argue, the chemistry of two leads are lack. I think this show's getting love from older viewers because even though they have high ratings, the talks and buzz in korean and international websites are less.

I love Goblin and I'm happy they're getting more and more popular with sky rocket ratings. I hope the show stay good. And please give me more bromance than romance. I just don't get the pure innocent kinda female lead in every KES dramas.

Legend of The Blue Sea is just a so-so but I still keep watching it lol.

I hate KES for making KGE acts as Euntak and make people dislike her cos of her character. Like, the girl is a great actress, but people think she is not just because the writer didn't write her character well enough. KES's male characters are always ten times more interesting than her female characters and maybe she could just stop writing female characters cos certainly she doesn't really care about them as much as she is to her male characters. Sorry for the rant. I'm just annoyed.
Also, it's pretty sad to see the rating difference between Entourage and Goblin. So extreme.

Weightlifting Fairy deserves so much more! Of the seven dramas I watch a week, it's the one I look forward to the most and rewatch the most.

I'm not that surprised at RDTK's bump in ratings. These last two weeks have been adrenaline-packed, with accident after accident, and keep you watching with solid cliffhangers. They featured more arcing accidents (like the highway pile-up and the OR hostage crisis) than individual incidents limited to just one episode. I, for one, was hooked after the main couple had a very hot kiss in the first episode. Like steamy, backlit, and infinitely replayable. Here I am, nine episodes later, still waiting for more of that but enjoying the rest while I wait.

Dramas I'm watching in order of how excited I am for new episodes (most to least):

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo
Goblin
V-Focus
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim / Legend of the Blue Sea
Behind Your Smile
The Man Living in Our House (please end it already)
