[Best Friends Forever] We don’t talk anymore

Dream High

By @yjgclone

Dramaland can tell stories about the most beautiful friendships whether they are men, women, or a bunch of students trying to reach out in the world together. When I read about this month’s theme, I knew a lot of people would express their feelings about the most solid friendships, the ones who never left their BFFs when things got really really rough and stood by their side.

For me, lost relationships that were rekindled give me a different kind of heartwarming feeling—the stories about friends we lost along the way, and the second chance we might give someone who wants to be with us again.

Dream High

Dream High had many different kinds of friendships. From the underwear-sharing bromance of Jin-gook and Sam-dong, the underrated friendship of Hye-mi and Pil-sook, to the whole group of six students doing a flash mob with the whole school. But for me, the like-hate-love relationship of Hye-mi, the popular girl, and Baek-hee, the hardworking one, shined the most.

Their relationship development is one of the focal points of the show. In fact, it started the drama’s tension when Hye-mi totally left Baek-hee hanging during their audition for the art school. I’ve always thought that Hye-mi 1.0 was not totally emotionless. Though she was really personality-wise hard to deal with, she still actually had very limited ways to show that she cared for her friend. When Baek-hee was being called Hye-mi’s slippers, Hye-mi threw a sample of her attitude to the bullies. Her approach was not really endearing, but she somehow returned the favor of appreciation that Baek-hee gave to her.

Dream High

However, due to insecurities and prejudice, their relationship went flat as they created their greatest nemesis in each other during their ill-fated audition, where Hye-mi was insulted by her friend’s success. Their friendship became like a kettle boiling up. The heat between them was fiery and conflict and rivalry between them was constant.

But just like any real relationship, sometimes it just takes time to realize the bigger picture that both of them were wrong along the way. By being a more mature person in the later episodes, they learned to see each other again without hatred. The ultimate reconciliation came during Baek-hee’s darkest time. Hye-mi sang and dedicated their audition piece to her. The song that drifted them apart was also the same one that gave them the will to carry on.

Dream High

A roller coaster ride for friendships is hard to find in dramaland and this one is so satisfying. I’ve seen dramas that tried to use this trope (You From Another Star, Oh My Venus, I’m Not a Robot) but Hye-mi and Baek-hee are my favorite. They pulled each other down but also encouraged each other. I also like the fact that their conflict did not originate from a guy, but rather the pressure that forced them to show the nastiest side of their personalities.

Their school war was also not caused by some misunderstanding that could have been fixed (though Baek-hee wasn’t informed of Hye-mi’s financial situation). It is their nature and realizations that led them to that. I think that their initial friendship was a ticking bomb waiting to explode. The audition just pushed them to their limits and revealed their worst judgments. And without this fight between them, neither of them would have realized the things that would make them better.

49 Days

How could you fix a really broken friendship? Well, 49 Days says it really can’t be fixed anymore, especially when ticking time is against you. This healing drama narrates the story of Shin Ji-hyun’s soul trying to find three tears of pure love in order to wake up from her comatose state. With this chance given to her, she discovered that her fiancé and her best friend were actually plotting something against her and her family. When Ji-hyun finally wakes up, she insisted on seeing her ex-friend In-jung. While pretending not to know of her betrayal, she told her a dream she had which references a scene from the first episode.

Ji-hyun: “On my engagement day, my shoe broke. I kept seeing you taking your shoes off for me. You took your shoes off unconsciously and ran barefoot. In that moment, you’d taken them off for me.”
In-jung: “What are you saying?”
Ji-hyun: “They say shoes are a woman’s pride, but in that moment, you threw your pride aside for me. Forgetting the engagement ceremony, you thought of me first. Because I was your friend.”

49 Days

That pinched my heart a few thousand times. Despite all of the betrayal, Ji-hyun still saw the good in her friend. It also tugged at the heart to know that In-jung was the last pure love tear that Ji-hyun needed to wake up. Their friendship, stained by deceit, might be unsalvageable, but their mutual feeling of connection would still linger. I think one would still celebrate the other’s victory and feel empathy for the other’s hardship.

I guess there are really many kinds of friendships. There are really some friends who are bound to walk a different path from the one you are taking. These friends should not be blamed, as they also need to realize some things without us. However, that does not make them any lesser, as they are the people we created our stories with.

Great write-up, @yjgclone. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for reminding us that those friends that might have drifted away from our life is still one of the many important people who shape who we are now. Our experience with them might be bitter, painful, or regrettable, but it also gave us an important lesson we take for the rest of our life. At the very least, not to make the same mistake twice.

Exactly! And if we do almost make it twice, we know what to do to prevent as much damage, or how to behave in certain situations. Previous mistakes even help in whether one should act faster to fix it, if the friendship is worth it, before it's too late.

This is such a lovely post. It views K-drama friendships from quite a realistic lens. Yes, we really do fight and sometimes those fights will tear us apart. In doing so, they will also leave a lasting influence on us. I haven't watched either of the dramas referred to, but I'm glad they showcased friendship as they did. :)

When I initially read this month's theme, the friendship (and the eventual falling out) of Hye-mi and Baek-hee was the first thing that came to my mind. But then I got discouraged when I re-read the theme several times after. It said Best Friends Forever so I thought writing about the frenemies in Dream High might not be acceptable. This post made me realize I was wrong. (Thanks @yjgclone, by the way! I love your write-up :) )

I should have known better. Being BFFs doesn't mean there will be no fights. I've personally experienced it myself. Most of my closest friends started out as some of the people I thought to be irritating. lol (They also had a terrible impression of me. Fair enough.) Even after we became friends, we still had little conflicts every now and then. However, we learned to forgive and just let things go as time went on.

And then there were a handful of "great" fights--the ones that caused me and some of my friends to be sort of rivals. We knew each other so well, but as we became rivals, we used our knowledge to hurt each other. Since I was aware that they knew my weaknesses, I tried my hardest to overcome them. Thanks to our friendship, rivalry and rekindled friendship, I can sincerely say that I became a better person and a better friend.

Just like what Mr. Schuester once said in Glee, "A good nemesis only makes you better."

I hope I'm making sense here. It's my first time to comment on a submission (overall my second time to comment here on DB hahaha!) I want to join you guys, you're some of the most awesome people I know. (I've been lurking for a couple of years lol )

PS. Am I the only one who remembered DH right away when the first #metoo related allegation came out? And then I found out the father of Taecyeon's character was also involved. Anyway, I was really glad when Jin Guk was there for Baek-hee when a similar incident happened to her.

PPS. Shems. An idea just struck me. Should I write about their friendship? Aaaaah T_T

Aww, this post was so sweet! Great job @yjgclone for writing this up. The reconciliation in Dream High was so sweet, but yes all the friendships with Pil-Sook was the best. So cute.
And I haven't seen 49 Days, but that quote just might push me to watch it, just to see the friendship between the two female leads. :)
This makes me want to go find my BFF and just squish and hug her. :)

A bit of warning for 49 Days: the ending was sort of controversial (even though I liked it and thought it was consistent with the drama's themes). The friendship between the Ji Hyun and Injung wasn't focused on very much. It was mostly Injung feeling cornered by her guilt over betraying Ji Hyun. There was nothing really sympathetic about her character for like 80% of the drama. But in that scene between Ji Hyun and Injung, I was convinced to forgive her as Ji Hyun did and to see how despite her resentment and betrayal, unbeknownst to herself, she really did truly care for Ji Hyun.

Uh oh, and I thought it would super sweet, centering on the friendship of the two.
This is some good post, about their friendship. If I didn't know better, I would believe this is about their sweet friendship such as The woman who still want to marry...
Thanks for the warning, I might be more wary in watching this then... O.O

Definitely not what you were expecting, but in my opinion, despite there being obvious baddies causing trouble, I thought it was a poignant, almost spiritual drama with a life-affirming message, and it ranks among my favorites.

The drama isn't about the frought friendship between Injung and Jihyun, but the friendship between spirit Ji Hyun and her host body (the lonely, suicidal Yi-Kyung) was really touching.

@yjgclone
This is such a lovely write up ~ thank you for sharing it with us. 😊
Friendship is both simple and complex, even when it ends it stays with you, what you learned, what you felt, your memories. The trick is to learn from it and move on, without forgetting the sweetness and not allowing the bad parts or ending to ruin the full picture of the relationship.

When dramas can show that realistically, it tugs at my heart in a way nothing else can. ❤️

YESSS! «their conflict was not caused by a guy» I admit I have not watched the dramas you've talked about, but I full heartedly agree. Girl friends in kdramas who can only talk about how pretty they are, what guy they're dating or fight over a guy annoy me to no end.

I love these two shows and I love this post's highlight :) Thanks for writing about friends turned enemies turned frenemies again!

I don't know if it's regret or the chance of correcting one's mistakes or just the reluctance to let go of good memories, but I like when they leave room for enemies to have organic reconciliation. I especially love that phase when they're *trying* to fight the pull of friendship again and pretend to not care but we knooooooooow they still care and just want them to laugh and join forces again.

(And to those who got curious about 49 Days and Dream High after reading @yjgclone 's post, WATCH EEET. They're both good shows with unforgettable characters!)

Thank you for writing about these two friendships and for this different take on friendships I'm surprised more dramas don't cover this topic of broken friendships where there is either forgiveness or reconciliation in the end.
