Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Radio Romance: I was patient through last week, but this week I yelled at my TV when Su-ho finally prevailed over all the machinations to come back to radio… and then was all, “I don’t like that time slot. I quit.” Until then I was sympathetic, but after that it just felt like he was kind of his own problem. I’m still in it for the romance angle, though, and hope we can make it to the end with the plot frustrations minimized.

That Man Oh-soo: I will keep trying these OCN Romances, so help me, even if most of the time I’m left underwhelmed. I just like cheesy modern romances (and have a high tolerance for corny, which is essential), even if half of the hijinks make me cringe, so I’m hoping the chemistry between Kim So-eun and Jonghyun will be enough to carry me through.

Mystery Queen 2: I was disappointed when Wan-seung moved away at the start of the new season, but when his apartment went up in flames and he had to shack up with Ajumma, all was right again. Their romantic status or lack thereof confuses me (honestly it was the buying of the ring that threw me off), but at least now we’re seeing the relationship unfold rather than guessing what happened offscreen. I wish more of the side characters had carried over into the second season though, because the new supporting characters aren’t gelling for me in the same way, and I miss the Scooby gang. But the detective duo is still aces.

Radio Romance: I feel like it took a really long time to get the heroine aboard her own OTP ship, but I like things much better now that she’s actively reciprocating. And initiating! That was a nice change of pace.

Woohoo Waikiki: Dong-gu’s stupidity at discovering his feelings was entirely expected, but it still made me laugh. It was worth all of the denial to see his big AHA moment though. Finally! Of course you love her, you dumb moose!

Misty: I’m caught up through Episode 10 and so far, Episode 9 is my favorite. Ji Jin-hee blew me away with his anguished performance as he grappled with the black box chip evidence from Hye-ran’s car. Actually, every performance in Misty has been strong but I’m also impressed with every aspect of this production. Misty has become my new standard for dramas, it’s that good. What started out as a murder mystery has grown into a discussion of the media—does it serve the political and legal elite or the people? To be honest, I just want Hye-ran and Tae-wook to find their way back to each other and continue to look spectacular in the process. There’s no doubt that Kim Nam-joo has an impressive wardrobe of pantsuits, but her coats are just as amazing.

That Man Oh-soo: I didn’t care for Kim So-eun’s character in Our Gab-soon and decided to see how she fared in That Man Oh-soo. It turned out to be the perfect antidote to the intensity of Misty and I enjoyed Kim So-eun and the drama very much. I liked the hint of magic introduced by the special tree that is connected to Oh-soo and I anticipate hijinks as the story unfolds. It looks like a light romance and that’s exactly what I want.

I’m Not a Robot: I binged the first half of this show this week and loved every minute of it. Yoo Seung-ho’s puppy-ness, cute dating lessons, an amazing second lead lady who isn’t horrible—all so good. I thought there was no way that I would hit a slump, but now here I am stuck on Episode 22 without the desire to keep going. I want the heartbreak that I know is lurking in the next set of episodes, but then once that’s over with, I don’t want to deal with the company bureaucracy machinations that the recaps have promised I have to endure. Just give me the cute and heartbreaking moments supercut please!

That Man Oh Soo - The first instant with the the music already sets the fluffy mood right from the start. I don't care how ridiculous the premise or how corny the setup, I am in. Plus, so many eye candy in the first 2 episodes alone.

Radio Romance - I have never liked petty men in Kdramas and find them an instant turn off (Reaper and Goblin) but this is the first time I find pettiness so sexy and manly. Suho's pettiness is use to such good effects here, I can't help but find it adorable.

Hwayugi - I don't get why many were unsatisfied with the ending because I totally loved the ending! I mean, it could have gone the Black route. But it was resolved in a realistic way, how no one was fighting tooth and nail to make sure anyone stayed alive til the end (zombie, Sam Jang) just so we can have the OTP be together. They accepted that people (spirits?) die and I loved how both Ma Wang and Oh Gong moved on with future plans. One of the better drama endings I have seen in a while, because I was totally fearing how they were going to pull a Black.

Mystery Queen 2 - This week was admittedly better than the rocky start last week. I think this was due to the shift to focus more on the two leads and their interactions which are always a joy to watch. I hope they continue to focus on the crimes and the duo's dynamics while trying to solve each case.

Golden Life - At this point, I just want more Jiho and Seoyeon. I don't know if there are any episodes left to resolve their budding romance. Just how many episodes are there left anyway? So I don't get the point of introducing this plot line so late in the game.

Misty - Dropped this for a while because watching live really makes me lose momentum. Might still pick this up after all the episodes finish airing.

Mysterious Personal Shopper - I can't really keep up with daily dramas butI've caught the first 4 episodes so far and it's kept me intrigued. Mostly because the casts are mesmerizing and the set up is intriguing, also because it has not reached makjang territory yet. I remember Park Hana was the antagonist in another daily drama last year which was one of the better ones I've seen too.

Grand Prince - I was kind of anticipating this. Kind of, because I needed a new saguek on my plate at the moment but then I am not a fan of Yoon Shi Yoon. Ok, I know I'm in the minority who thinks YSY can't act and have only one expression (which looks like a cross between sad and constipated). But the first half an hour of this show felt dated, like an old Chinese drama. The casts are all rather dull and I fell asleep halfway. It got more interesting with the flash back to their childhood. So I am not giving this up just yet. I will slave through at least episode 2.

No one's watching MY GOLDEN LIFE ...:(
I love that Drama despite the heartache and confusing moments..
You should try to watch it too even if it's 52 episode long.
While watching it, you would wish for even more episode especially at the end. Shin hye sun and Park shi hoo is really amazing in it.

It sprinted out of the gate with the first episode and was good right up until the middle (ep. 28?) when everyone switched off their emotions and that dragged on for wayyy too long when they could have explored and expanded other side stories. The actors were all good and likeable but the way they were written just makes you unable to root for them. It's just the bad writing that has ruined it.

Mother and Misty --- so so good! I think I won't be able to watch other mediocre dramas now after these two because they just set my personal drama bar higher.

I'm also reminded of just how different the experience is watching veteran actors compared to newbies. It's much more satisfying and convincing watching these experienced actors because of their nuanced portrayals. I like how we're seeing more and more of these older names come back to dramaland.

Radio Romance: sweet fluffiness with puppy eyes.

You are all surrounded: already in Hwayugi withdrawal that I needed a new dose of LSG and CSW. Hope go ara is not going to cry in this one as well.

In the US, your choices are Kocowa or VikiPassPlus (ie, Kocowa content on Viki). Other than that, it should be on all the third party sites.

I don't know who has the rights outside the US. Sorry.
