Jung Chae-yeon, Kim Sung-chul meet in first love music drama To Jenny

Kim Sung-chul, Jung Chae-yeon

I just love it when dramas incorporate music into its narrative in a significant way, so I’m looking forward to how this upcoming show pans out. KBS is a few weeks away from premiering To Jenny (also stylized to.Jenny), which promises a new form of musical drama. I’m not entirely sure what this new format entails exactly, but the show purports to infuse its story of first love with indie music, which sound rather complementary, with nostalgic, bittersweet elements common to both concepts.

Jung Chae-yeon (Reunited Worlds) will play the female lead in To Jenny, who sounds like the plucky type: Even in the face of adversity, nothing can stop her from pursuing her dream. I don’t think you can ever really go wrong with a Candy as your heroine, but I do hope there’s some more layers to her character, because her one-line description in the casting reports make her sound like every drama heroine who ever lived.

I’m much more excited to hear that our hero will be played by Kim Sung-chul, who played Law Man in tvN’s Smart Prison Living. I absolutely loved his character, and was surprised to learn he wasn’t a newbie but a musical actor. I’m hoping he gets to show off some of his singing abilities in To Jenny, where he’ll play a complete innocent who is as lovable as he is hopeless at romance, and uses music to express his one-sided love for Jung Chae-yeon’s character. Too cute.

The show sounds like a low-key, experimental drama for KBS, with a rookie writer (Lee Jung-hwa) and rookie director at the helm (Park Jin-woo). I do hope the experiment pays off, though, since I always appreciate new formats being tried out, and projects that give relatively inexperienced talent a chance to shine.

Music drama To Jenny will air on Tuesday nights on KBS, premiering on July 10.

He was an AWESOME scene-stealer in Smart Prison Living. I usually love music dramas, and I love k-indie music, so this is exciting news for me. Yippee! Thanks, @tipsymocha.

I dropped Reunited Worlds after a few episodes, but Chaeyeon's performance made an impression although her training is more in singing/dancing. Glad to see her take on a role that can showcase both skill sets.

We have a joke in my household:
Hubby: What was her name again?
Me: It's probably Jennifer/Jenifer.
(My best friend is named Jennifer and so is half of my neighbors.)

Prison playbook is one of the best dramas this year... or was it aired last year??? Never mind. It is awesome. Long, very long episodes, I must tell you, but I think they are all worth....

@javinne I looooved Prison Playbook!

5

You should definitely watch PRISON PLAYBOOK even though it's long. everyone has acted so well.

You're gonna be hard pressed picking a favorite character once you start it! You have to let us know if he's still your favorite in the end. :P

Same here! That drama was so bland and I ended up dropping it but I actually liked the scenes set in the past. I actually want her and Yeo Jin-goo to do a (better) drama again.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of her acting!

I will present to Dramabeans court in support of a counter argument the evidence of my most recent drama trauma:
Kim Bo-ra of Rich Man, Poor Woman

Rich Man has reached the stage where it's so bad it's funny, and I need kimbapnoona there suffering/laughing with me.
If I'm going down I'm not going down alone

Still, I somehow hope that ep. 13 may see an increase in neuron activity on the part of the Candy lead (notice the "wishful" part of my name). Delusions.

1

The Rich Man will not lead you to enlightenment, and the Poor Woman is nothing more than a candy that will leave you feeling sick to your stomach. Step away from the bad drama. Cleanse your palate with a quality rom-com free of abuse and masochism.

And most importantly don't drink the water @kimbapnoona. It will not lead to enlightenment, and if @wishfultoki is being inspired by the Guseonwon you will especially regret it.

Agreed. It was so bad, I didn't bother watching ep 2.

ok... if it is Kim Sung-chul, I think I will at least watch the first episodes and see if they pay off.
I also really loved his character in prison playbook, and the fact that he was resilient, smart and good tempered.
I hope his first role as main lead is at least a normal first lead that we can be proud of 😂😂😂

Kim Sung-chul!!!! I loved him in Prison Playbook and he acts soooo good. I remember not believing PP was his first role then I discovered he's a musical theater actor and I became more in awe. I'm so excited for this! I'm so glad KBS took a chance and gave him his first leading role so soon! Even if it's an experimental drama~

Jailbird! I luffed him in Prison Living. More than Haerongi and Devil Captain, even. I'm glad we can hear him sing in a drama soon.

Kim Sung-chul was so funny in Smart Prison Living when he tried to catch the ball of the hero :D

I love the musical dramas like Dream High, Monstar or Persevere Goo Hae Ra but it depends a lot of the songs.
