Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 10-16, 2018

I guess we’ve been lucky with dramas lately because ratings are looking better with each passing week. (For some, at least.) We had one premiere this week, that being the Monday-Tuesday revenge comedy My Strange Hero. While the drama features an underdog, the drama itself isn’t an underdog; it managed to bring in 6.1 percent. The real underdog here is Dance Sports Girls, who’s falling way behind all the other competition.

For Wednesday and Thursday, Happy to Die trudged on with low numbers as An Empress’s Dignity marched on with high ones. This tale of modern-day royalty jumped all the way to 14 percent this Thursday. Meanwhile, Boyfriend seems to have gotten comfortable around 8 to 9 percent, and weekend drama SKY Castle actually went even higher than that. Well, dang. I’m curious to see just how high this show’s ratings will go.

Go love yourself, AT&T and Warner Bros. Dramafever would have licensed SKY Castle. I could have been watching that right now. But noooooo. Sigh!!!😢😢 My only hope is Netflix will release in in a few months.

Usually a show not on Kocowa would be on Dramafever. Ever since Dramafever shut down I've been limited with what I can watch. Not happy. 😥😒 Thankfully the shows Netflix decides to pick up will air simultaneously with their airtime in Korea (or at least the same day). At least that's what they are doing with MoA and I hope it's a trend they continue.

I know! I'm so curious about Sky Castle, but there is nowhere to watch legally. I really hope Netflix gets it eventually.

How is this possible that there is no legal place to watch subs when there are subbed episodes on illegal websites. As far as I know, the illegal sides don't sub dramas, they rip it off the legal ones. So there must be fansubs or a legal site where they air perhaps.

Just wondering. When is VIU or Korea on Demand going to step up to the plate and fill the vacuum left by the demise of DramaFever. Perhaps they could put together a joint venture and grab subscribers willing to pay to view episodes with English subs.
My opinion only but I am sure whoever owns the DramaFever extensive library of subbed dramas will make them available if an alternative to Netflix is started by that owner.

Time Warner/WarnerMedia, which owned DramaFever, probably still have the broadcast licenses to the shows. It's likely that they'll include the subbed shows on their own streaming service if one is ever launched. Otherwise, they'll let the broadcast licenses expire, and then it'll depend on who buys the license to each show at that time.

VIU is actually subbing most of the shows that would have been on DF (*cough*Jtbc dramas*cough*), but the platform is limited to SE Asia/parts of East Asia only. Illegal streaming sites such as kissasian get their subs from there.

Hi @noelle Elle. Thinking out loud here.
1. Kocowa is a joint venture between KBS, MBC, ans SBS. I felt from the beginning that its target was WB's DramaFever. Here is an old article that suggests that:
https://variety.com/2017/digital/news/korean-streaming-service-kocowa-us-1202502916/
2. What is stopping the other networks, cable or otherwise from forming a central streaming service (a la Kocowa) to offer their products with
centralized licensing and shared profits?

As to your second question, probably money. It’s a costly endeavor to successfully launch a streaming service, including costs to organize, build, manage, and market the service. Will the public pay to subscribe to the cable shows? How much to charge? What portion of the revenue should tvN get vs Tv chosun (popular channel vs non-popular channel). Should the seldomly watched cable channels even be included? Will people subscribe even when cable channel have limited content (eg, fewer, lower budget variety shows, etc.). These are just some of the considerations that investors would consider when deciding whether to invest in a venture to launch a streaming service of the cable channels. Cost, revenue, competition, and the likelihood of success.

1

On Demand Korea seems to carry most shows, but I don't see any that are subbed and many are PPV. A while back I signed up for a free trial because they said most would be subbed, but so far nothing, and my free sub is about to run out. Not going to renew until I see some subs. https://www.ondemandkorea.com/

My favourite characters are twins' mother, admission trainer and Kim Hye Na. I'm rooting for mom and Hye Na, and am super curious what's the deal with trainer, she seems to be incredibly insightful, but uses her "powers" not too help students but manipulate them to reach the goal but on the other hand it's seems like she look down on this education obsessed parents. I really want to know more about her!

My favorite characters are the twins and the 14-year-olds. Seo Joon will make a great school vice president. My favorite mom is Soo Han's mom who is hilarious. As for the coordi, I am dying of curiosity over the mysterious Kay. I honestly don't care about Hye Na and hope the show doesn't focus on her birth secret because I would rather focus on the core SKY Castle kids.

I noticed that female characters in this drama are richer, and male one are more like comic relief, wither their temper tantrums and insecurities overdrawn. Basically twins are on screen only with their mother or other children, I'm sure we see them more in future episodes tahnks to Hye Na subplot, and when Ye Sua will make not so great school president, the girl is so narrow-minded, and self-centred that I can't imagine her going along with anyone.

1

I can see that. She is too self righteous and the family is turning their nose at the very lifestyle they enjoy.

She has already interloped on those kids after being told not to directly. She is a pot stirrer under the guise of being naive to that lifestyle and environment. I am glad that she is being called on it and things are going to come to roost for them. She is already stewing because Woo joo did not crack top 20. Oh yeah, it is coming.

When did she stew? Woo Joo's parents literally don't care what Woo Joo ranks. They only want their son to be happy. Their family only moved into SKY Castle because of her husband's job.

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I wouldn't call that stewing, she was worried because it was unusual for him that's all.

1

She was complaining to her husband that Ye Seo's mom threw her a party with the intention to gloat over her daughter ranking first. The twins' mom even told her husband, "Woo Joo didn't even make the top 20 on his exams, but his parents didn't say anything, and he managed to come in third on his mock test."

2

He went into the school in 2nd place. Woo joo Mother legit bragged about ignoring other parents who were trying to contact her.

Yeah, she was on a high horse about that, until the rankings came out. She might not have been bothered about his falling, but she sure as hell is bothered by having egg on her face.

1

She wasn't bragging about ignoring other moms' calls. She just doesn't like to associate with moms who are obsessed with their kids' education. Woo Joo's parents don't even put him in tutor classes. They don't pressure Woo Joo to become a doctor or a lawyer. They're hippies. He actually went into the school in joint first place.

1

Which I finally realize with this week episodes that SKY Castle is basically serviced apartments for hospital professor, I wonder why twins family live there, they don't have any ties to hospital, which must be filthy rich to provide such an accommodation.

1

Same. I don't really like her that much. She seems quite smart but at the same time very naive and off. Ahh I don't know she's one of the character that just pisses you off. The same goes for her husband who just squeezes himself like a mouse argh. I like jiwon and donghee atm!

MoA : i think the writer start messing up the drama by mixing reality and virtual world.

Last empress : koreans love this no logic soap opera 😂 but the twist in the story pretty good.

Just dance : this one more popular among international viewers i guess.

Red moon blue sun : another underdog, the rating did no justice to it story.

I'm noticing a trend. My favorite Monday shows don't get much love in Korea. It happened with Bad Papa and it's happening with Dance Sports Girls.

Red Moon, Blue Sun is such a great suspense story and I wish it had better ratings. But I guess it isn't doing too bad? It is a show that I have to leave for the weekend to watch so that I can dedicate the time it deserves.

Alhambra: I just want to point out that last Saturday the rating was 7%. That's not really far from this Saturday's 6.8%... no reason to panick 😉🙂 ... yet...
We need to wait for today's (Sunday's) ratings (or better till next weekend) to see of there is a trend.

Ratings aside, I so far like Alhambra, especially for its unpredictability (...and dimples 😉). Though I'm following slowly... as being a scaredy cat... and not good with too thrilling scenes (...and blood)...

Dance Sports Girls and Red Moon Blue Sun honestly deserve better but I'll just be grateful if they don't go lower than this. I don't know if A Pledge To God increased in rating due to the pre-emption of Fates and Furies or not but it deserved thIs higher rating. Sky Castle is a rare case when everyone seem to be in consensus the high rating is very well deserved.

The Last Empress might even reach 20% or more, now only at epi 16 / 8 and this drama has 32 / 16 epi more.

Tbh .. Memories of the Alhambra is becoming too scary and too dark for my taste. I feel somewhat suffocated every time Dr.Cha appears on screen. This is becoming too scary and I kinda think I might drop it if the story doesn't unfold soon.. hrrr.

Even HB's dimples cannot save it .. because he doesn't really smile lately ofc...

I can't understand why the last empress rating is quite high. the title, the cast & the story line is quite misleading. The title should be "the daily life of the royal dysfunctional family". Every one in the drama is manipulative & has their own agenda for their own personal gain.

These are only the traditional ratings for TV watching. They don't include online streams or on-demand. Anymore decisions about how well a TV show does include that. Gossip Girl in the US for instance only got pretty small direct ratings but it had an absolutely insane online following. IIRC the online views didn't boost the tv ratings a little they were a multiple of it, and it was in great part college students watching it within 3 days of it airing. So sometimes shows have a strong following that is just not obvious from TV ratings and I can see something like Alhambra being more of an online show. I would bet that SKY castle is killing it online too, though.
